Your can also remember to replace the brushes when they become worn or are discolored/short, and also u can true the comm every few runs. Also, eliminate as much resistance (such as extra wire, low quality connections, and especially avoid msc's at all costs.) as possible from the electrical system in your car/truck.

For recreational use, try using low silver brushes Trinity 4380, Reedy 729 or Stock Japan Brush in Standup configuration. The springs that come with motors are adaquate. The present timing should be around 12 degrees for adjustable endbell motors which yield a good RPM/Torque output without causing excessive wear to comm & brushes. This setup requires cleaning with motor cleaner, comm stick and re-oiling bearings. I've run some motors with this setup using close to 12 sets of brushes before needing the comm cut.

For competitive racing, with the need for a lathe more constant maintenance brushes Tri 4383, Reedy 737 springs Purple or Red on Positive, Red on Negative. Timing set 22-36 degrees of advanced timing. More timing yields more RPM, less Torque but overal speed (HP) remains the same. Advancing the timing increase the revolutions of motor but increases heat, decreases runtime and puts more wear on motor parts. This setup requires a comm cut after each run, sometimes brushes changed, and springs replaced after 4-6 battery packs(heat buildup can cause motor spring to lose their tension).
