Raptor 30 V2- Great helicopter, capable of advanced aerobatics, easy to learn on, inexpensive. If you start from nothing you're going to need the helicopter (of course), which is about $390 with an engine and muffler. Then you need a radio, I recommend a Futaba 9CHF, around $450. Gyro, the Telebee is a good one and it's heading hold, $80- $100. Then you need starting equipment, like a power panel, 12V battery, 12V starter, glow starter, basic tools, etc. Budget in another $120 for that. So you're looking at around $1000. If you shop around (eBay, etc), you can get everything you need for around $700.

Lite Machines Model 110- Great for beginers, cheap, almost unbreakable. Only problem is that it's very small and fixed pitch, not capable of aerobatics. You can get everything you need for under $600, brand new. Check litemachines.com. BTW all these prices are in US dollars, I don't know how much it will be in pounds.
