OK, this probably wont catch on but here it goes anyway. First off I am a 31 year old nooby to RC cars and have just got into Legends class racing at the local track, so my reasons for starting this thread are a little selfish. But from other threads I have started it seems there is a real interest in this type of racing especially with noobys like me, people looking for a level playing field or people who dont have endless a endless supply of money [like me:D ]. Anyway I was thinking that people could post tips, tricks or just talk racing on this thread. Hope to here from all you Legends racers browsing the boards soon. Thanks for checking this out. Sean

ok, just to get this straight.. Legends class is the Bolink Legends racer.. it runs on oval? Is it full contact? what size oval?
is there like a standard legends series and an open/modified series?
Reason I ask is, I`m slowly getting back into the 12th scale mini stocks, rebel racing from Mardave. Very cheap and would probably compare with the bolink cars..

Hey goldle, I just got into racing legends so I only know the rules at my track. The cars are Bolink Legend cars, we run on a very short carpeted oval and theres a track about an hour away that runs them on a large paved banked oval. At my track we go by the rules provided in the car kit. We are only allowed to run the motor provided in the kit or a exact replacment. They are Trinity 27 turn 5 degree spec motors with the timing locked and bushings. We are allowed to turn the coms for maintenance only and no other modifications are allowed. We have to run spec battery packs they are 4 cell 1300 NiCd's and the tires that come with the kit or exact replacments and we are not allowed to shave them and are not allowed to play with the gearing or the car in any way. Also there is a price cap on the ESC nothing over $150.00 retail some tracks go as far as putting a price cap on radioes of $150.00 dollars but at are track we can use any radio we want. As far as full contact goes if you mean rubbing doors and bumping heck yeah as long as its not to rough. Its prity tight racing kind of like restrictor plate racing in NASCAR the cars run in a pack most of the race. Hope this answers your questions. Sean

Hey goldle, cool ride, looks prity much like a Legend chassie. From the looks of the body they play rough over in the UK. Do they run ovals or road tracks over there and what restrictions do they put on them? Sean

Heh, haven`t raced it in a long time.. some local kid decided to run it over on her bike while we were racing..
But the rules are pretty similar.. check www.brca.org for the list..
mainly out of the box, or very limited durability mods

I have a legend and lot of hop-ups:
1-futaba mrc230cr esc
2-lunsford turnbuckles with purple rpm ball cups
3-deans connectors
4-a few wins
5-everything else is stock (motor,gears,battery)
Ive raced Ledgends for bout a year. One little trick everyone seems to do is loosen up the little plastic crossmembers so u can spin them with your fingers. This kinda gives u rear suspension and keeps car from staying twisted after crash.

Is there any way to put on road tires on this type of vehicle? I have a digger 2 that will smoke a new t-maxx with the batteries half-charged!!!! Only problem is I mainly race on-road and can't get any traction when the batteries are fully charged.

Well, its all Mardave parts.. so ask at your local shop to see if they can get Mardave, if not, you`ll have to import them from Mardave back home in england..
dirt cheap though.. few pounds each part.. i think the chasis itself was only 2.50 UK pounds.. like 3 or 4 bucks

i went to the site .the parts are really really really cheap ..but i still gonna make the same chassis as yours in my design and technology class except a little different i will post a pic of my design soon. then i will post a pic of the actual thing!! i have made my own land rover shell for it it looks amazing...ill post a pic of that when i bring it home from school... did you buy that mini as a kit? if not then where could i get that big block of engine and gearing i see in your pic!!...also do i see your own homemade battery pack or is it just me?

Yea, I bought mine as a kit. It was about 40 UK Pounds back then.. and the black blocks are also available, but would be cool if you could get them machined at school out of Aluminum..
It is basically two plastic bulkhead type things, then a solid axle with a bearing on each bulkhead, and the spur gear is actually part of the wheel assembly.
the front is real simple too, no suspension other than the flex of the chasis..
I`d see if your local hobbystore has a mini stock you can look at to get a good idea. Mardave also do some other cheap cars, like the cobra.. very simple cars, but well made.. probably nothing compared to a new B3 or XXX buggy.. but still fun, and a 1/4 of the price.

oh, and yea, the battery pack was a butchered 1500 6 cell pack i had spare.. they ussually run 4 cells in the ministocks, as thats what fits under the shell..
you can get bigger shells to run 6 cells, but i just butchered the pack to make it fit.. :)
works for me

Does anyone know the scoop on Bolink? It seems you cant get any of their products anywhere! Too bad! Legends classes are getting ready to be formed and no one can get one.
Does anyone have any other tips and tricks to get it to hook up? It is pretty loose when the gas is applied.

At my local track (concrete oval) we used to run rubber capped tires that were off of one tenth scale pan cars......ask your track if it's allowed. At my track it was, and the soft compounds hook up really well. Other than that....set toe in, use softer springs on front (tenth scale pan car springs, Agin only if allowed) and be smooth on the trigger.

Maxx-tower hobbies is the only place that i could find The legends stuff, my hobby shop caries some stuff but not very much
Well guys i finally get to race my legends car again (first time in about 6 months) since the offroad track isn't racing
As any Legend racer knows the steering blocks are the weakest point. Associated makes a steering block for their pan cars that will help.

The extra plastic tab in front of the kingpin hole lends strength to the part.
We race our Legends on a 1/10th road course. We also run what we call Super Stock Legends. Any motor and any 4-cell sub-c pack. Its wild and fun.
Here is my son's Legend. He runs in the Spec Class using the kit motor and spec batteries.

I was looking at some 1/12 cars and the tires look identical. I couldnt see the rear axle much but from what I saw it looked the same too. I have a diff thats not like the new ones. It isn't square and is made of solid stock, I think aluminum.

1/12th scale use different wheels and differentials. Although very similar the Legend uses 1/10th scale wheels and diff.

that brings back memories of my legends racing days..
ill need to scout around and see if there are any onroad tracks in my area that are running legends...
id love to get back into racing them..:)
I just hope there is still a Bolink. All the hobby shops in our area have had trouble getting parts from them. The last I heard they were "reorganizing". That could be another word for "trying to borrow money" or worse "chapter 11".
They don't even handle AMB stuff anymore.

My friends motor will quit sometimes for no reason. We cant figure out whats causing it, were both new to electric. Does anyone know whats causing it?
Also my car is uncontrollable on concrete, it spins out constantly and will glitch at full speed sending it off the road. The spinning out is becoming a problem. Sometimes it will do this wierd thing where I cant even keep it coming in my general direction, although it has been occuring less frequently now.
Last question, does WD40 do any thing to electric motors or ESCs?

We, my wife, my son, and myself all race legends, along with lots of other rcs. It has to be the most fun class I have ever raced. There are times, at my local track, that we even run a fiqure 8, almost like a demo derby. I have lots of tips i pass along, but i just don't have the time right now, just as soon as I do i get a list together........

The Legends class used to be one of the biggest classes at my local track, We've seen less and less on race night until now unless myself and my two sons run there isn't enough for them to even run.... Some of the guys think it was a class for newbies but I've always enjoyed them. THey can be made to run fast and handle well with the few things we are allowed to do but can be a handfull out of the box somethimes.
Hope you're right about Bolink not fading away... now you just have to convice everyone that has quit running them since they can't get any parts for them at any of our LHS.

Please remind him that if hobbyshop orders are not filled quickly racers can't get parts.
If racers can't get parts they cannot race.
Racers will find something to race that parts are easily available for and no longer race the chassis they cannot get parts for.
I love Legends but we all break parts and must have a reliable source for them.

Please remind the Hobby shop owners to order. There are four dist. and I know that they have to order to Bolink, then ship to the dist. then to the hobby shop. Parts are there, just need to get them ordered. If they want to skip the dist. order from Bolink direct.
Here is what my LHS/Track owner sent me today.
"They were not at the hobby show in Chicago. They had a spot reserved but didn't show. HRP, Horizon and Great Planes are no longer handling Bolink. So even if they are in business you will have to order direct to receive it anyway.
We ordered kits last year at this time and STILL don't have them so thats where we stand. "
What four distributors is Steve using? I want our shop to keep selling Legends.
kevina250
10-10-2003, 06:48 PM
The cost is what keep them from going to Chicago. And I bet a lot of others didn't go either. He actully left for Vegas this year. But the 5 I have got from Steve is MSA out of Crossville ,Tenn. AAA Model Supply Blountville, Tenn. ERI, Murrdock Performance and HRP. Don't know why HRP told your LHO that they don't. But I would try the others first. Horrizon dropped Bolink, Not the other way around and Great Planes are rethinking like they do every year. But try the ones in Tenn. They can get them quicker.

Oh buy the way. What is the name of your hobby shop? I can see if they have orders from them.
Billy W
10-10-2003, 08:23 PM
First off, we never reserved a spot in Chicago. Never had any intentions to go to Chicago. SO i'm not sure why they showed a booth for us there. The reason we didn't and weren't going is the cost. Same reason several other companies didn't go or did go (to be seen) but didn't get a booth.
Hozion was droped by us, for reasons i can't go into. Great PLains is currently reevaluating what they want to carry and according to a couple people i talked with at a couple other companies we are notthe only ones. Steve is at the Vegas show right now meeting with them. HRP? not sure why they said that because we just sent them a ton of stuff.
As far as the legends kits we just shipped several to MSA and several to many individual Hobby shops. The reason for the short supply of kits right now was a case of not paying attention to inventory. When we ran out of one part we couldn't ship complete kits. So while we waited for that part to restock we would pack some of the other parts out for indiviual sale. and when the previous part would restock we would be out of another, and so on and so forth. Right now we have around 100 kits getting ready to leave the shop. They should be out soon, as well as a large supply of parts and bodies. THis will in no way catch us up. But we are working very hard at it. SO bear with us.
We are shipping directly to hobby shops but we always have. With so much work to do wehave limited our Phone time some (it is on the answering machine). We put everyavailable hand in the shop when we can. Steve has been personaly taking orders and helping out on the phone as well as answering e-mails (around 100 a day). SO have your local shop call us or e-mail us and we will take care of them the best we can.
OH yeah best rumor to date....... Bolinks shop burnt to the ground......lol. Pretty good one but didn't happen.

Kevin,
The quote in my post about the Chicago show was directly from Bob Marler of B&L Hobbies. He is the one telling me that orders have not been filled and none of his normal distributors carry Bolink anymore.
Shop owners don't need the hassle of jumping through hoops to get two are three hundred dollars worth of parts from a manufacturer changing the order method everytime.
Let us know when Bolink gets back with Horrizon or Great Planes and I will inform B&L.
Billy W
10-13-2003, 07:36 PM
Actualy all of our other current distributors are easier to deal with than Horizon and great plains.... no huge min order. as with contacting us directly you don't have a huge order to place an order.
Billy @ BOlink/RacetechDragmaster
Billy W.,
Could you please contact Bob Marler at bob@bandlhobbies.com and give him a list of your distributors? Bob is a racer as well as a shop owner and wants to carry Bolink. But I'm not sure which distributors he deals with and who he should get Bolink stuff from.
I know the shop I work at (HobbyTownUSA) only deals with HobbyTown, Horizon and Great Planes. The owner runs a business rather than a hobbyshop if you know what I mean. ;) He will not work with any more distributors than he has too. That's why I deal with two other hobby shops on a regular basis.

Glad to see you guys are still around, I'm bringing my Legend out of retirement. Had mine built as a 10-cell drag car and had a small wreck that mothballed it, now I'm going to bring it back as a high powered carpet car (hopefully 7-cell/13t). Any recommendations for this goal? I do have some parts that have developed surface rust and was wondering what may be a viable replacement. It need diff rings, almost all the screws, the rear wheel bearings (yea, I know, but it was bought as a basher not as a racer), and have gouged the rear axle too making it harder to remove the rear axle from the bearings. I'm planning on getting Du-Bro 4-40x1/2 stainless boat screws to replace the originals, but don't know if I can use Associated parts for the rear axle assembly and front suspension. In drag form it was scary fast and would like it to be a little more controlable (but then again, when running 10-cells and a 19t motor......)

Sorry but i never gave my e-mail address. Only address i have is a personal one and do not give it out for business, but i can be gotten in touch through Bolink. Sorry i didn't come back right away but i don't spend alot of time on the net was out of town and i have lots of other things to do also.
On the net you can get parts thru AAA Model Supply/Dillion Racing, Murdock R/C, Msa Dist , HRP, Compitition Products and those are the ones off the top of my head.
There were bigger problems than we thought concerning the web site and like my self the people who run and set our up site work for other people as well and we have to wait our turn but i was asured that it would be fixed soon.
AND "YES" we are still in business. And once again sorry i didn't get back sooner to this form but with several thousand sites out there that we are asked to check and answer questions for racers/hobbiest it takes a while to make rounds. But we are also going to soon after the site comes back up have a forum on the site to ask questions and recieve info.
Hope this helps.

Can you get tower back as a distributer? They are one of the biggest in the business and would make getting parts much easyer. I love BoLink cars, they are the simplist, cheapest, and toughest cars around. The only problem is the front carriers. They break all the time coming off jumps and in collisions. (yes I do ramp my legends, and I havnt broken anything else yet.)

You are lucky. I can't even get Bolink to tell me who I can get them from.
Who is your "they" that carries all the Bolink parts?
Do they do mail-order?
There is no more Bolink around here.

No. I am keeping mine hoping that we can find a source for parts. Even though no one from Bolink is giving us/me any help as to were we can get them. They ignore my questions here and have not responded to any of my e-mails to them in the last 6 months.
Also I cannot in good conscience sell something you cannot get parts for. I just don't work that way.

The mushroom bowl is my hobby store. Here is there website: http://www.mushroombowl.com/
I dont think they will mail order parts. I have never asked. The legends is like the biggest class they race indoors.

I ordered an electric funny car from Bolink direct back at the end of November 2003. Bolink charged my debit card for the car on 12-20-03. I still have not received the car as of 12-26-03. I have emailed and called them numerous times with no response. What is up with these people? Anyway, if it takes them a month to fill an order, I would not recommend purchasing any Bolink products. Parts would be impossible to get from them. I will be returning the debit to Bolink's credit card processor today.

man this sucks. i have been a bolink fan since 90 or so, when i got my 91 sport. i have had a kegend car, two pro streets, and a musclecar with a camaro body. i was looking to try legends again, if only to teach myself how to drive (i have always been a terrible r/c driver; another reason to stick with monster trucks).
i sure hope bolink gets their stuff together soon. unlike pretty much every other form of r/c racing, they are the only people to go to for legends.
maybe bolink should look into letting someone else make them too.

in this thread, i read a post about leaving the plastic chassis supports/braces loose. this is supposed to give a small amount of rear suspension action. wouldn't letting the chassis plates flex cause the rear axle to bind? it seems almost too good to be true.
i have been thinking about getting another legends car (had one back in 95 or 96, and never really did anything with it), if only so i can finally learn how to drive. there's a "track" at a mall up the road an hour or so away, and they do touring car, monster truck, and drag racing in the summer. i'd like to get where i can actually get around a track before i try that stuff next year.
Leaving the cross-brace posts loose keeps the chassis from taking a tweek. It handles better with all 4 tires touching the track. It also allows a little suspension-like movement in the back as you point out.
Both are good things.:D

i'll be running on pavement... does the cross brace trick make the cars driveable on the street?
also, i have read a few posts from people that claim to have put a lot more power to their legends cars that bolink ever intended. how hot/fast can one be made without being foolish?

We race legends cars every weekend on a banked concrete track, leaving the chassis loose will bind the axle some but you will make it up in handling, if you can find some white steering blocks off of a older Bolink car(2000- elimanoir) they are the same ecpect for having 2 arms ( cut 1 off ) they will last forever. We get our parts direct from Bolink, they haven't gotten things up to speed yet, but you WILL get your parts ! We have about 20 regular legends racers. Ed
We race a Legends "Super Stock" on-road class that only limits us to a 4-cell pack.
I've run 14 quads and Spec-Mod 19 turn motors but I turn my best laptimes with the Trinity Monster Stock motor. :)

That doesnt mean the company was sold. When you buy a company you buy the plants, offices, and everything in em. Most of the time a bigger company with more assets that can handle bigger losses will buy a smaller company and leave everything as is, but changing the name and keeping the profits.
Bolink has in fact gone out of business! this comes straight from the owner Steve Rule.
It's a sad day. Steve helped a lot of people get started in the hobby. :(

Whats happening to the Legends class? It seems like that would be a good investment for a company like trinity who already makes the spec motors and batts.

Trinity has a "Spec" racing line including cars and batts already. Although it is popular in spot areas it's not as popular as the all-out racing product lines.
My Legend now hangs from a wall never to race again. :(
From what I understand legends will be back under another company that bought out Bolinks stuff! There's supposed to be an annoucment this April.
That will be great! I love my Legends. :)

I can get a 2nd hand Legend next week and I need to know a few things:
1. Is it a 4 cell or 6 cell chassis?
2. Is it only Bolink wheels which fit it?
3. Whats the dimensions (in metric if possible)?
4. Any other bodies fit it?
Cheers.
Here's the company that took over bolink, http://www.cdiracingproducts.com/
Its sad to hear that a company with such deep rooted history can just disapear.
Does anyone have a Nitro Legends for sale? I would like one.
Any pics of nitro legeneds? Any Race series that existed in the past for nitro Legends?
Well Bob rule is the one that started the company and made it what it was,it was when he turned it over to his son that things went downhill, kids nowadays!

I'm new to these cars. What would be a good tire that would be durable to run on pavement?
Can anyone tell me the wheelbase and width of the Legends body? It looks like it could work on the new Losi release of their mini late-model oval car. The Losi chassis has an 8 in. wheelbase and a 7 in width.
