i think there is 3 or 4 different gear pitch's got spur/pinion gears. what are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

Basically 32p, 48p, 64p, and the odd balls 24p & 72p.
Generally lower the gear pitch, the stronger the gears are (less likely to strip) but does not give as smooth a transition from tooth to tooth.
Higher the gear pitch, the more likey it will strip but gives smoother gear transfer.

Also, going to a higher pitch gives you more fine-tuning options. The more teeth you have on a spur, the smaller the gearing change you'll make when changing pinion size, so it's easier to get EXACTLY the ratio you want without making a compromise(but with higher pitch, durability can become more of an issue as AudiTT said)....:)

don't forget the metric sizes .4 and .6 module I believe Tamiya calls them...most people think of them as metric 32 and metric 64 pitch.

im not sure if they're stilll around but the BK pitch 56 pitch.
HPI uses something called a 1M pitch - I think... it's bigger than 32. Very strong.
