I'm pretty sure the AE black grease is a lithium-based grease, that would probably work fine.

Yeah, so far I've seen nothing that works any better than AE's black grease for the thrust assembly, so I'd just keep using that(those guys at Associated are pretty smart, I'd listen to them)....

i would wait to build the diff than. dont sub in anything else or you might ruin the balls in the thrust assembly, as well as maybe the diff rings and diff balls if the thrust assembly slips or something and burns out the diff. although i doubt there will be any damage to the outdrives.

although i would wonder even if it didnt ruin anything how well the diff would work.

Bummer, I was hoping someone found a subsitute for the black grease.
I found a substitute for the white grease that allows me to run my diff around 1/2 turn from tight, without slippage. It's silky smooth and has less wear on the thrust and diff rings while giving me killer steering. I don't even clean my diff anymore, just the thrust bearing while it's still in the tranny/truck.

I'll try anything to make life a tad easier!!!

I have been using high performance bicycle bearing grease in my T3 for about 6 months. No problems yet, actually I think it is even a little smoother then with the black grease.

grewst,
Isn't that stuff a tad expensive too?

I think I paid like 8 bucks for a tube that I've been using on my bike for about 3 yrs,, and there is still enough to keep using it for like 2 more yrs :)

If your do use bicycle bearing grease,,, get it from a good bike shop,, pay the extra dough for the high quality stuff...
when you think about the abuse the bearings in a crankcase, headset, or even just the bearings in the wheels,,, have to go thru on a bicycle (btw I race partime downhills so they recieve regular punishment) I just seemed like an obvious choice, and I havn't had problems with using it yet, and I have torn it apart and regreased it (or rebuilt it as the case may be) like 10 times now, about once a month.
I'll post the brand I use later..
