Let me know and you can come by and pick up after work....I live 1 minute from Al's hobby shop....
Now....I need to clean my NTC3 to beat that evil R40
I got my pack today at about 4pm.....but I would still would not mind picking up the NiMh cells from you to make an extra pack, so bring them to HTOP next saturday. I have lots of extra plugs, and since the Co I work for uses a lot of pretinned copper and brass I can make solder lugs. So I don't need those, but could you sell me a piece of shrink wrap with the cells??? If you nee I can remind you during the week.
You mentioned a set-up that would probably work well with the R40. is there anyway you can tell me what they are. I should get my Integy set-up gages next week (actually on 8/18/03 per UPS tracking). This way I can be closer or actually Dialed in for Saturday. And any other pointer you might care to share.
Hey what happened to the devil??? Did he quit talking to you????
Also anybody else need pretinned copper or brass for electrical hook-up let me know. I can get it, They work real well for making bat. packs.

Is this the one u guys ask for??
Results are up on our web site from yesterday's race (www.chicagolandrc.com). It turned out to be a pretty darn nice day for racing. The 15 minute A-main yesterday was about the most fun I've had racing in quite a while. You could pretty much throw a blanket over 1-3 for almost the entire race (until Bobbo crashed near the end), and then Joe ended up beating me by 2/10ths of a second after a 15 minute long race with 2 pit stops. I drove right on his tail for about the last 5 minutes and he never missed a beat to give me a chance to pass cleanly... some really nice driving under pressure.
It looks like the electric guys are figuring out what motor they all want to use, and we'll be able to start enforcing it in a week or two. Serpent_Impact, aka: Albert's Hobby Shop, said he'd stock one or two for electric guys that show up and didn't know that was the motor they needed. The electric class actually looks like a lot of fun. Not that nitro isn't also fun, but the 6-12 guys that have been racing in electric lately all seem to get along very well, without a single 'hot head' among them (you all know what I mean). They just seem like they are having a really good time up there, which is the way it's supposed to be.

yes, the non-pro version. Tower hobbies is listing it for $32.99 which is higher than what I got it for. I bought mine at Al's for $28.99 and I found it at another online store for under $30 as well.

yeah, yesterday turned out to be a great day for racing.
The funniest part of my day was in the 2nd electric qualifier and accidentilly bumped into Kitt, and we both spun out.
We each thought it was our fault.
"sorry, you go ahead."
"no, you go."
"no, you go."
We both decide to go first and hit each other again. heheheheh

how the heck does marshalling work? do you jump in and swim after the boat, or do you have to swim out to a corner and tread water for 15 minutes?

Ah that's simple. All the marshalls wear orange life vests, and double as boueys. Not only efficient but cost effective. Only problem is that when they have to retrieve a boat the course changes.

both of you can sell your 'real' cars and pick up used, 1992 sky-blue Chevy Cavaliers. Take the left over money and you'll have enough to suport your RC habit for the rest of your lives.

it should be even more fun when everyone is on somewhat the same level, as far as motor power goes.
You can keep the timing stock, but after playing around with it this weekend, I think as long as you're around 20 degrees of timing, you'll get decent power out of that motor.

Just wait till that nitro motor flames out in the middle of the pond on a day with no wind.....I hope your pitch arm is good and ready....... or if you did not put enough floation to keep from going down.....yuk....that nasty water with leaches and big snapping turtles.....bring your swim trunks (and maybe a cup along with some antibotics).......speaking of turtles if you go to Wheeling there is a big turtle that will launch your boat out of the water if you hit him and from what i remember turtles do not assend like subs more like gators so you will never know he's there .........then you will know why I gave up Boats......!!! tell me when you are going and I will come watch....I agree they can be fun but the aggravation is worse than cars.....Too bad I don't my HOTSHOT 3.5 O.B. Good question.....when I was building the boat, I realized...
(1) I have to use AM 27 mhz (take about GLITCH)
(2) Fail safe won't do jack.......when you are in the middle of the LAKE....
(3) Balance..........and I cannot use my TC tweak station.
(4) Forget about HUDY setup board.....or foams or Turbo plug.
According from Albert.........RC boat is a much better hobby then cars..........because that required standard RC knowledge, and it is much cooler......you don't need to spray the track, you don't need to worry about the SHORE of the foams, no need to worry about camber, caster, down up stop or ridge height.......no need to use starter box, no need to worry about engine overheat...and on top of that...........LOTS of exercise.......cause when you ran out of fuel, you will find out your boat is in the middle of the lake and ALBERT and I will start swimming accross the lake and drag the boat back....
Thanks Albert..........thanks, what a stupid a$$ hobby.

Maybe, we are all just NUTS......The kit comes with standard thread, if the car has metric thread, that is additional and is bought separate from the system itself. You still use the same gages just diff. nuts......I just got mine yesterday and its great!!! It's fun passing nitros. :D
Two sundays ago I was at AJ's in DeKalb (sweet track) and ran my electric in the nitro class since they only had 2 electrics that day. I finished fourth in a field of 8 or 9 nitros.
I liked it when the announcer said, "Euge is looking to get around that pesky gas car......."

Rookie,
I think you've been sniffing fuems too much man. The metrics don't fit the standard, and the standards don't fit the metrics. Maybe you just forced them the first time and screwed the threads up. Integy hasn't worked any kind of voodoo magic on them to make them universal though.
God only knows when I'll make it back out to race. I'm working 6 days a week, then stuff around the house on sundays. I did find my Impact though, so I am 1 step closer.

No...that is not true, you can try mine..........Integy DOES made a universal that will work on both......it is no magic, just the DEPTH of the thread it goes....
I believed they THREAD those nuts in standard on the outer rims area....then the inner thread are metric.......thats why I cannot screw the nut too deep on my NTC3 and I have to screw all the way in on my Serpent PRO.
But again, they were like 3 years old....so I think they figure it is better to create 2 set to make more money then 1....

I just broke the motor in like I do with most my motors, I just run it at 3 volts for 500 seconds so the brushes seat.
I haven't experimented with the brushes springs yet, so let me know if you figure out a good combo. Rutt and Ron were talking about possibly using Reedy 767's or 760's.

Hann...
i would run the 19T with Trinity 4503 or 4499 brushes and 2 green springs. if you feel you need a bit more torque run a red spring on the positive.
you can also put bends on the springs to increase or decrease tension.
i set-up a Monster Stock Pro with 4499s and double greens and it was my best stock motor....ask euge :P heleol
those brushes are laydown
the 19T arcornite uses standup brushes......

dats for a 19T Chameleon :P
19T Arcornites - use the 4383 - if you can keep it cool enough some people have been keeping the timing relatively conservative and gearing it high.
you should skip work this sunday and come out to tinley
This is what Kevin K, one of the fast guys from Venture, told me about setting up the Arcornite:
"run the Trinity 4383 brush with purple springs and about 20 deg of timing to start.....if the brushes are not holding up too well switch to the Trinity 4380 or Reedy Qusar brush but you need to cut the com more often with the Reedy brush. "
looks like they're getting ready at Venture for indoor carpet in the next month or so.

Tell me one thing guys...........does electric required LESS knowledge compare to Nitro.....? It doesn't look like it is any easier then nitro.........I really want to get back to electric (for the pan car season).........but man, all those BRUSH, COMM, Lathe, SPrings, Timing (what the world is that...?) Batteries charge and break in period........this an that...?
Do I need a EE degree or at least 10 years working experience at ComEd in order to run electric.........?
I really need help on electric and I hope you guys can help in the future.....
Walt: I will have Albert to drop off the SW that I am selling, take a look and see you want it or not....if not, it is on EBAY (we can talk about the $$$ in the future)...also, Albert got me involved with the BOAT, and I've got him involved in Pan-car/Micro with us this winter....
I'm sure any of the electric guys would be happy to help, Rookie.
It's probably just as easy to get into nitro as it is to get into electric, especially with the RTR kits available. Electric is probably a little less indimidating for beginners. But yeah, I guess you're right, electric and nitro are similar in that in order to get the most out of your car, there's quite a bit involved. With electric, to get the most out of your motors, there's a bit of work involved. But if you didn't want to do that, you could buy a motor, install it, and just run it till it drops.
For me, I could never figure out how to keep my NTC3 from flaming out. Or I'd start it up and try and blip the throttle as I run up the stairs to the top of the driver's stand only to see it flame out and I'd have to run back down. I've never flamed out in electric. Plug in your batts and your car is almost guaranteed to run (assuming you wired everything else okay).

We're pretty smart... I'm sure we'll have this 1/12th electric stuff figured out soon.
And I thought you were kidding about the boat. What kind of boat did you get? Where to they race them these days? I haven't seen a club racing boats in over 10 years (not that they don't race anymore, just maybe not at the one pond near a relative of mine where they used to race). And just when you thought that 25% nitro was expensive, now you've got to buy 60% for your boat.
Nexus

i don't think electric requires more knowledge then nitro's....it's just different.
i like the ease of tuning with electrics as far as gear ratios go. changing your spur/pinion on a nitro is a handfull. changing gears on my electric TC3 is simple and can easily be done between heats.
my NTC3 ran great and i never really had any problems with it...but electrics are calling my name. can't wait... TC3 and B4! :P

Yeah....I don't think we are going to RACE the boat, cause I don't think the boat I've got from Albert is able to FLOAT at the beginning....so just playing around.
Beside, baby gal doesn't like car, but she might like boat....thats why I asked Albert he should let me have the Miss Budweiser instead of the Laser Jet.....
60% fuel? I was planning to use 89 octane.....(I didn't know Boat use 60%....the engine on the boat is some 12 small block engine, I think 60% will convert the boat to submarine for sure....LOL)

I was watching the faster guys at TP yesturday and noticed how much more speed they were pulling out of the corners than me. Was wondering how to step up to this level. Next to more practice, is it a softer front end? a one-way front diff? tighter clutch?
I'm not sure if I'm one of the 'fast' guys or not that you are refering but I can share with you my setup. My best lap yesterday was about a second off of Espo's best lap, but I was as quick as Bobbo and Nick. You probably know who I am, as my name here, 'Walt' is the same that I go by at the track and in real life, and it's written on my bright orange and yellow car, and I was running the races.
Anyway, I'm running an NTC3. I've softened up the springs quite a bit on my car, logic being that our track has some pretty nasty bumps in some sections. Not sure if this really makes a big difference or not. If I had more time to experiment I'd go back to the stock springs just to see how that works again.
I've been running 37 shore foams in front and 35's in back. I've been pretty happy with the tire wear and traction with that combination. Also, my front and rear tires wear at pretty much the same rate with my setup and driving style (which seems to be more of a 'smooth and flowing' driving style than the 'point and shoot' style of guys like Espo).
I am running the stock Associated ball diffs front and rear, no 'one-ways' for me. I don't like the feel of the car with a one-way at all. I like to use a lot of brakes coming into turns, and with a one-way, the car would be getting very loose with all the brake I like to use. I have a feeling that some of those other guys are running one-ways, based on the fact that they were coming out of the corners better than me but that I was just killing them getting into tight corners, especially the one at the end of the straight yesterday. I felt like I was making up a lot of time on them getting into that turn hard on the brakes.
That's pretty much my setup. Hope that helps.

But there is one good thing.........brand new paved parking lot.
I am not sure I will see you again this season, I won't be able to to to HTOP for the entire September because I am heading to the Mid-west series on 09-06-2003 and going to Inidanna to see some NASCAR race on 20th.....and I think HTOP is done after September.

To be as fast as WALT............the answer is.....IMPOSSIBLE, cause he is actually a ROBOT, he programed himself every sunday morning by not to make any mistake on track, only thing can slow him down is the CAR itself, that's why he ran out of gas several times yesterday and cause him the 1st place finish.
But to be as good as others....there are 6 things to do.
(1) Car.......if you are running HPI RS4, you will never be able to hang with the top guy....(proof me that I am wrong)
(2) Engine......get something around $150 and up, OS- CVR won't help you to catch them on the straight, unless you have 3 speed and they are overheated their engine.
(3) Setup, that is too much to talk about, you need to go to Tinley Park every SUNDAY and ask Walt or Espo and others like Tony G or Nick or ALbert, I know they are more then happy to help you UNTILL you are getting TOO FAST for them.
(4) Tires........know what you need it when you need it.
(5) Money (aka Job or second job or third...etc), you are going to blow some major $$$ to go fast.
(6) Practice...........a lot of practice.
Final word, I don't see there is any other way to go fast.......when was the last time you see some low-budget RTR car get to the top of A-main. The equation like that does not work in any kind of RACING.

Walt............are you going to the MID WEST series.....it is on my B-day, 09-06 and 07............and the best part is. no more 2 hours of driving to middle of no where....it is in Des Plaines some kind of Industrial Park.
I knew Eri, Babbo and Espo was there 2 months ago.........those guy are FAST, but you do have a very good chance to see some REAL TC racing beside the National.

Now, I need to know should I just concentrate on 235 4WD or do both...(since I really want to race Walt one more time for good 30 minutes main)

Sorry to bust in...
Any of you guys want some tires, exergen temp gun or a few of my engines? I've lost interest in R/C for now, with work, motorcycle riding season, other hobbies.. for whatever reason, the desire to race R/C is not really there anymore. I don't need money from the stuff, but there are some things I didn't use when I did race that I could see giving up for some fair prices.
I'm not dumping all my stuff (I have done that before and regreted it) just some of the spares... keeping all the radio gear, cars tools ect. incase I get the urge again to race.
Stuff I will dump if there is a market..
MT-12, slide, motorsaver filter, SG crank, green anodized heatsink in OE box.
RB X12, slide, no air filter, std crank, green anodized heatsink, in OE box.
RB X12 one piece rear exhaust manifold/muffler polished (yeah, it is that 80 dollar one :) 3-4 runs on the super nitro. Looks new besides a few scratches on the bottom. No dents or big imperfections.
CV-R .12, rotary, no air filter, std crank, OE box.
Exergen DX501 temp gun with manual.
Brand new in box Ellegi foams:
30.40 (1)
30.37 (2)
30.35 (1)
26.37 (2)
26.35 (3)
26.40 (2)
26.42 (1)
Be reasonable, and I will probably give you the stuff for your price.. unless I really don't like you. :P Seriously, I am looking for around 75 for each of the nova engines and 40 or so for the OS. 10 bucks a pair on the tires, take them all please.. that is less then what I paid for them. I would like to keep it to tinley guys so I can come drop the stuff off on Sunday and not worry about shipping or anything else. If my prices are too high I am open to reasonable offers.. No Alberts offering $5 for the exergen please. ;) If you guys want any of the stuff, PM me and I'll bring it out this Sunday.

Mike: I'm not sure I want any of your stuff, but I do want you back at the track racing! Plus, your brother still needs a little bit more of your help out there. There is always time to do a little RC racing. You don't have a wife and kids to tie you down yet, so take advantage of it and do all the things you mentioned plus race the RC cars.
Howard:
Are you still planning on racing in Tinley this Sunday? If so, and if you are going to bring along your Super, let me know and I will get mine back together (still no engine in there) and race with you, plus, give Albert and Mike Chiappetti some cars to chase in that class.

I don't know... I really do enjoy running the races in Tinley, and I'm already thinking about missing a Tinley race in October when that HPI Challenge is.
It would be a waste of money, but maybe I'll race the qualifiers on Saturday at the Midwest Series and then show up at Tinley on Sunday to run the races there like normal, so I'd miss the mains. I'll have to think about it some more, but I guess I don't have much time to decide.
If Tony is racing in the Midwest series, then I'd pretty much have to stay in Tinley to run the race. I need to get a couple more guys 'trained' to run the races in Tinley for next year to take the burden off of myself and Tony.

yeah, I had an 02 red R6. Unfortuately, I had to sell it. I recently bought a house and remodelling expenses turned out to be a lot higher than I thought it would be, so I sold the R6 after only having it for a year. I miss that bike a lot. Actually, I miss having a bike in general.
when I bought my bike (http://www.iit.edu/~siaeuge/new_R6.JPG)
I miss doing track days with it. When the house stuff settles down, I'll probably buy a new R6 next year (or the year after). At least that's what I tell myself so I don't miss my bike that much.
Have you done any track days with the F3?

Sure, you can borrow two Hitec radios if you want. I'd see if they complain about your radio first, and just use the Hitec radio as a back up if they complain (unlikely, they are pretty far from the airport).

I live in orland park and have a stadium truck. Couple of weekends ago I went to tinley to check out whats going on. I saw the on roads runing strong and i looked at the off road track and it was overgrown with weeds and etc. My question is will it be ever open just for practice of anything. Is there any other off road tracks in that area. I am new just got my truck about month ago.
the closest offroad I think to tinley is leisure hours

This year is a lost cause for the off road track in Tinley (obviously). I ended up having a baby and therefore not enough time to run both the on road racing and the off road racing.
We are seeking a qualified individual or group of guys to run the off road track for next year. Most of what's needed is already there (nice driver's stand, outer perimeter boards, lighting, etc.). It just needs someone to take it the rest of the way and maintain it for the season and then run the computer on race days. Assuming there is a decent turn out for off road (and there is no reason to believe there wouldn't be as we get lots of guys for on road and in general off road is more popular than on road), it will be a profitable endevor for whoever decides to do it... not 'quit your day job' profitable, but a nice weekend income.
We have a couple of guys who say they are interested but it's still up in the air, so if any of you think you might be interested let me know.

You say 'like usual', but wasn't last year the first year that they did Sunday only open to the public? I thought that's why HPI said they were not going to attend.
Actually, I think I'm going to pass on this one this year because I just found out that during the HPI World Finals in Vegas, in the hotel right next door, the Hobby Visions show will be going on... looks like a huge RC (and other hobby) show. Since I'll be out there anyways, I'll just check out that one.
Also, I just talked to Joker (remember him from around here last year and years prior?). He said that the HPI race will be at a permanent RC facility about the size of the Hamilton track... he said at least 250 foot straightaway... 2-speed is probably actually necessary out there... should be fun. I'm trying to find pictures on the internet, but no luck yet. It's a new track.

But will they allow the WP conversion for the WORLD....? Again, this is the world challenge and I think they will actually INSPECT the car more the the regular challenge.........

No WP conversion 2-speed, I already asked. I'll have to run the crapy HPI one, if I use one at all.
As for engines, not sure yet. I'm going to figure that out in the next couple of Sundays at Tinley. 1st choice is my Picco engine, probably with a Novarossi carb. It's my newest engine.

No one wants to talk about the Midwest Series? Oh well...
Just wanted to let everyone know that the Chicagoland RC Raceway will continue to hold Sunday on-road races through the end of this month, with our last scheduled race on Sunday, September 28th (just three more races :( ).
I hope that a lot of you can make it out to our last races of the season. I really want to show the owner of the bowling alley and race track that we can get a good turnout for RC racing to help make absolutely sure that we'll get our new pavement for next year. The more guys we can get out there these last weekends the better chance we'll have of getting a new surface.
Plus, it's going to be another long, Chicagoland outdoor off season (aka: winter), so you might as well minimize it as much as possible by coming out to the last races of this season.
See you at the races!

We do not make people purchase an AMBrc personal transponder. We have 'handout' rechargable transponders available at the track that can be rented for $5 for the day for your race. In other words, it's $10 to race if you have your own personal transponder, and $15 if you don't.
The personal transponders are really nice though. If you are going to be racing often at a track like ours that supports them, they are well worth the cost. They are currently $73 plus tax at Al's in Elmhurst, but you might be able to purchase them directly from AMB for less (www.amb-us.com).
I hope you can make it out to one of our last races this year.

My intensions are to go on saturday afternoon, with Danny and a friend. If the weather is nice we may ride the bicycles there and save the parking fee. By car we live less than 5 minutes, it take longer to park than the actual drive to get there. If weather is bad the wife will probably drop us off at the front door. It will be after 1PM, the wife and I have an appointment to look at a house. We will keep an eye out for you.

Rex [/B][/QUOTE] I'm thinking aobut getting a Serpent 950 next year .
8th scale is a lot of fun. In the series, there were more 8th scale class than any other class. The only problem is there is no track to practice this scale. I practice in a lot that is decent in size and asphalt. Tinley, is good in practice its just little bit bumpy and I cannot tell if my set up is off or not (NO offense Walt). 8th scale is easier to drive than TC or 235 class. If you were only there you can see the power and handling of this racing cars!!!
Do not doubt of getting one its the real F1 in the RC business and lots of fun!!! :)

No one wants to talk about the Midwest Series? Oh well...
Sorry! Walt,
After the great weekend, I just want to relax and get back to my priorities. It was a stressful weekend, then have to go to class @ 8 a.m. Monday morning. My G.F. and I had a great time and I think this was the best time we had in my Rc racing experience. My G.F. was my pit girl the whole time Saturday and Sunday. I did poor on the 8th scale class in Racine and I decided to bring my 235 class in case I have a bad race in the 8th scale class in Chicago.
Again, bad turn out in 8th scale but it was a great practice for me. Small things kille me like broken servo horn, parts of my broken body hitting the tires, and blow out servo. For short, I loss the race and got small points. On the other class (235), I had a great race in most of the heats. I cannot believe I made it in the A and got to chance to race with the fast guys in the 4th heat with a dying motor. That is the time a got booted down to the B main (I started late and forgot to put transponder. Stupid mistake!!). My G.F. had so much fun in the B main. It was a very close and clean race. I heard my name in first place few times, but after 18 min. in the race my motor died because I have to wait for Albert to get done refueling. I know Bobbo is not in this forum, but I give him a big thanks. I could not finish the whole 30 min main w/out BOBBO. I ended up 2nd place B main. The rest of the report is on the serpent site.
One thing I would like to share is. In all the thousands of cash we spent for this hobby and we get a trophy and a plaque if we win the race (You already know this a long time ago, you achieved so much in this hobby). It was not the cash, but the plaque was so fullfilling and rewarding. In my 2 years of racing it was so exciting to receive something that I never had since the day I got into this hobby. Even my G.F. was so involved that whole weekend. She was telling me to calm down and finish my race and not to crash when I in the pit. I would like to thank her also because when I went down the driver stand she was there smiling, jumpimg, and very excited for me.
Sorry for the novel folks it was just great experience to share!!
thanks!!!!

Thats great!!! It's the experience and the excitement that counts, and when your GF 110% behind you that makes loosing a heat that much easier to take. That is totaly cool that your GF is there with you. Hey gotta thank the wives and GF that smile as you leave for the track, Don't question the need to buy a hop-up for the car, or complain about spending more money because of broken parts........that is how my wife is.....OK enough mushy stuff..............See ya at the track.........
It's supposed to rain all morning, so we are calling off the racing for today, Sunday September 14th at Chicagoland R/C Raceway. Even if it did clear up later, it is bowling season so we can not stay late (they need the parking lot back by 5pm so that the 6pm leagues have someplace to park).
We'll try again next week.

Man, one less weekend of racing....................and it ended up only raining for like 30 minutes around 10:00, and the rest of the day is cool and cloudy only..........what a waste.
I will be at TP next weekend for the fairwell race, hope it will be dry and cool................
Yeah, it's too bad the weather didn't cooperate, but you've got to figure that's going to happen a few times a year. Hopefully it will be better the next two weekends to end up our season. At least I was able to spend the day improving the track. I finally built a mobile cart to hold all the hardware needed to run the race (P.A. system, computer, UPS, AMB stuff, printer, monitor). Not that it will make anyone else's day at the track any better, but now I won't have to spend nearly as much time setting up and taking down the race running stuff.
Did any of you end up going to the Hobby Show over the weekend? I decided to go on Saturday and brought along my wife and baby, both of whom really enjoyed the show, to my surprise.
I didn't spend quite as much time on the RC stuff as I would have liked, and spent a little more time than ideal looking at train stuff (which wife and baby prefer), but it was still nice.
Did you guys see Serpent's 'micro' car? Looked like a 'micro TC3'. I also thought that Losi's micro off road car looked pretty cool... I could see us running a class for them on Wednesday nights and just putting some jumps and other obstacles down when they race.
I didn't see Trinity there... maybe I just missed them, but they were not in the program either. I wanted to check out their new 1/12th scale car. Did anyone see them?
Rookie Solara

Yeah, Albert and I went around 3:00 on SAT........met Tony G, Espo, Tommy, Ruu, Aaron and Babbo there..........and Tony G said you were around, but I was too busy taking pictures.
That X-ray is so cool..................however, tell me that is not me, a very good concept that is WITHOUT all the elect equipment ON THE CAR...........picture the micro with (1) Big block motor (2) 6 cells 2/3A, (3) Hitec the smallest servo, (4) SPY esc (5) the smallest receiver that you can afford...........picture them all togehter on that car, what will that look like...?
My idea is........that car is WAY too small, no way in hell you can put thse thing together unless you put a 2nd deck on top of the battery, and thats why they have the CENTER MOUNTED motor, but still, it was not designed for big blcok and still are very limited for the rest of the elect equipment........I will definitely hold on for that car.
Lois micro buggy looks cool.................but their shock are basicly just springs......where were the dampers and oil?
Overall, the show is dieing..........I have a feeling they will all move to Vegas RCX within 2-3 years.......
Trinity said they will not be there............but I bet you can see them at RCX when you are at the WORLD challenge.
HPI has more information on their site now about the World Final race. The track is a permanent 1/8th scale track, Silverstate track I guess it's called. It has a 280 ft long straightaway, but they say 'most' classes will run on a shorter version of the track... it's a little unclear. One spot they say only the 2.4 hour enduro will be on the full size track, but then later they say 'most' classes will be on the smaller track. I hope they run the Supers on the full size track... that would be cool.

I'm assuming that Howard meant that will be HIS fairwell race of the season because he can't make it on the 28th, as we WILL be racing (well, if it's not raining).
Two more weekends of racing left at Tinley, then it's back to micros on Wednesday nights, and maybe 1/12th scale on some Sundays.... where? Not sure yet...
Hey guys... turns out that I won the 'drawing' for the free trip out to Vegas for the HPI World Finals... that means free entry into as many classes as I want, but I don't have an R40 yet.
This might sound like I'm asking a lot, but is there anyone out there with an R40 willing to loan or rent it to me for the weekend of October 10th through 12th? The terms are negotiable of course, and I can provide all the support equipment (engine, radio equipment, tires, body, etc.). I just don't have it in my budget right now to purchase one myself.
I figured it's worth asking...

We can talk........Just to give you an idea, The car is set-up with a Futaba 3PDF, OS max 12tr, Futaba Digital steering servo, stock servo on the throtle I'm not sure what your perferences are .....I'm trying to get out to TP on the 21st and 28th......but for sure on the 28th (pending weather). Ask Rookie he has seen it, you can also check out the R40 forum, I have been posting to there regarding my car. I will probably let you take is based on Break or loss/Replace agreement, I do have some of the more common parts that will break.

I made it to the show on Sunday. It was not crowded at all which was nice for seeing everything but I agree that this show will go away if the pace continues to slow.
Those mini buggies from Losi were so cool, I heard them say all the upgrades will be out there so real shocks should be available along with every other upgrade possible. $150 RTR, $1000 after Howard gets done "modifying" one.
How about that twin engine/supercharged T-maxx. Talk about a tuning nightmare, but very cool for show.
A lot of people I talked to from the west coast were surprised to hear Walt's mini-racing was going so well. They said they sell so many of those but can't get a big following out there?
Du-Bro had some new body clips on a rubber pull line that was a simple idea but a must have. And their nitro engine killer, a piece of plastic shaped like a cone that you just stick in the pipe to kill the motor, makes you say, "Why didn't I think of that?" I will have some of those to give away on October 5th in Tinley Park at MJ4 among other things.

Allow me to make an offer. I'll, of course, agree to repair any part that breaks while I have the car. I'll also supply a personal transponder for the HPI race and leave it in the car for you when it's over (a $78 value).... but wait, there's more: I'll put in my own electronics and engine, so there will only be minimal 'wear' on the car itself. What do you think?

I think everyone that races at Tinley should chip in and "Sponsor" Walt for this big race. For all of his time and effort to provide us with such a great on-road venue it's the least we can do.
He can still borrow the R40 or if we collect enough money he can buy his own. Either way, I am in for $20. How big of a decal with my name on it will that get me?

That's nice Brian, but I don't need a sponsor... I'm not looking for charity here either. I am willing to rent the car at the market rate, I'm just not sure I want to own one (I might want to own one after the HPI race though). I've been pretty happy with my NTC3 this summer, and if I'm going to purchase another on-road car, it's going to be 1/8th scale or maybe an Impact.
However, for $200 I might be willing to wear a 'Brian rules' T-shirt for the weekend, or put a 'Chicago RC' sticker on my forehead.
If you want to 'repay' me for putting on the racing at Tinley, just show up to our last two races to help me 'cement' the deal with the bowling alley owner to get us new asphalt for next year. The better turnout we get, the more apt he is to invest a little more money into this sport.

Rex: It was very nice of you to let Walt bring the Chicago RC spirite to the WORLD CHALLENGE..........I wish I can just fly over there and watch the race.
Beside, you will not regret that............I think the only thing Walt might break are the FOAMS. I still remember his come from behind finished on the Michigan challenge (you were there too) and trust me, you won't regret that.
Now..........Walt need a BODY, the ONE without the name 'WALT" on it...........this time, should be "REX - Rkmori Racing Performance" or something else.........
This Sunday looking good, and I think we can all doing some fine tuning of the car, and I think this is a hugh advantage of Rex, cause now his R40 will be tunned and set properly by Walt....when he return the car to REX, I dont want to see you crying about the car not setting right or car is not doing good.........cause you will have NO EXCUSE to complaint anymore. (LOL)
Brian, good to hear you are still in Chicago.......someone told me they spot you in China racing RC boat and kite............
Walt, you don't have to pay BRIAN to wear his T-shirt, he will photoshop it anyway (I still remembered that stupid ass MUGEN POWER picture).
Walt one thing for sure..............the centax, you MUST make the clutch modification first, I am not sure Rkmori got the parts yet, but honestly, you will hate the reaction time of the stock Centax, it is kinda horrible. (compare to standard 2 shores clutch)
Walt, r you racing MICRO this time...? Don't forget to get that HPI upgrade motor.....
Speaking of bodies, I guess I could use a new body to put on the R40 at the HPI race. If someone wants to paint me up a nice (and easy to see) body for the World Final race, let me know. I should probably get one of those Suzuki Pikes Peak bodies... isn't that what all the fast Japanese guys were using last year for the World Final?
My plan now is to try to race with you guys at HTOP on October 4th, and after the race I'll take Rex's R40. You can show me then what I need to do to the clutch if he has not done that already.
By the way, Rex, what type of engine will I need for it to drop right into the R40 (do you have a threaded crank in there or SG style)? I need to figure out what engine to run in that car.
And I am not planning on running my Micro at the world final. At the World Final it is HPI parts only, and I don't want to convert my car back to HPI parts... too much of a hassle at this point. At the Michigan race I just needed to put on HPI tires and HPI motor... pan chassis was alright to run.

Ok, the kit came with both adapters Long and std shaft, I have the car set up with a std shaft, I still have the adapter for the long shaft. Try it with the 12 tr If you feel that it is still under powered then swap it out. Really don't mind if you run my motor....but all in all you have to be comfortable Racing it...
Rookie, I will get with Albert, tonight and see if he has the main clutch shoe.
Since the engine is the most expensive 'wear item' on the car, I'd rather just run one of my own. The A-main at the HPI race will be 30 minutes long, so that's quite a bit of run time I'll be putting on the engine.
Geez... just realized that if I make the A-main in Nitro Modified and Super Nitro, I'd be running two 30-minute mains. I'm all for long races, but this is going to be tough out in the desert. I might have to rig up one of those hats with the beer cans on it (except put water in them).

1 of many reasons why I would not want to try and race at the World Champ. at this time, I need more time to improve my skills.. I will probably run the electric TC3 during the winter up at Venture Raceway just to keep improving ........
Howard already said it, but Joker will be there. I called him a week or two ago, back when I was trying to decide if I really wanted to do this at all. He said he'll be helping out and will supply me a table, EZ-up tent and tools that I can't fit in my suitcase.
Howard and I are thinking of running some 1/12th scale electric this winter, either at Venture or AJ's. And there is always Wednesday night micro racing in Tinley to keep your RC skills improving.

Walt,
Re; your email, I have not added any thing to the kit that is not HPI, It's still stock out of the box. but as I mentioned to in a reply to you via email. The HPI web site World Challenge rules does not state you cannot use a non HPI pipe or header, as a matter of a fact in the regular challenge rules page states you CAN use other mfgs' pipe. So you might want to keep it withyou when you go. The only thing that is not "kit" OEM is the rear shock tower shock ball mounts they are from the RS4 Carbon Fiber Upgrade. This is because the the OEM ball cracked when installing them. I plan to order replacements soon.

if you plan to race 1/12th scale at venture...you may be the only 2 guys...last fall they didn't run that class at all. unless you can convince more people to run it.
TC is the most popular at Venture...with the occasional Mini Cooper race and this year they might run the mini XXXTs. but no plans right now for 1/12th scale.
Just get Pro4s :D and run TC...you can run novice, superstock, or expert there....and if you plan to run expert hold on to your controllers ehelololol. there are alot of weekends where brian jucha, timmy heiser, kevin kane, and other sponsered guys throw it down some serious speed.

For the World Finals rules, it says HPI or Hot Bodies parts only, except, blah, blah, blah, where they list specific things that can be from other companies. Pipes and manifolds are not listed, so I sent an e-mail to Frank at HPI for clarification and was told that the manifold and pipe MUST be HPI only. Luckily, HPI just came out with a rear exhaust manifold so I picked one up, and I already own an HPI tuned pipe. Like I said, I'll just have to swap the manifold and pipe between the two cars, unless I see other people using Non-HPI pipes and manifolds, then I'll put on something else.

I own both a Micro and a Mini-z... definitely go with the Micro. The mini-z is just too much of a 'toy'. The Micro, although small, is very much a racing RC car, especially if you spend $13 and put a pan-car chassis on it. You'll have to come on out to TP one Wednesday to see these little cars... they are amazing. They can really zip around a little track. And 15' by 20' is plenty big to set up a Micro track and teach your son to race... except now you need two Micros...

I don't want to say price online now....Car is 99% brand new, I buy parts individually and built it....and this is the same car that I have and WALT have and is racable, it has 1-way front diff and big block motor already, belt is brand new, 140mm long, and will fit the Civic body.
Just add the SPY, and small servo like HS-81MG ($24 at Al's) and receiver, and 2/3 batteries, then you are done.
Oh, I am not getting out of MICRO, I still have my other MICRO for TP race........this is my back up car, and I was planning to use CIVIC to race with my wife.........but of course, she think it is a waste of her time.

I talked to Darrin recently and posted of rctech Venture thread......there should be at least 1 class of 19T spec for 1/12th, definitely no match to AJ (3-classes plus every season)......and beside, Venture track is not that flat for 1/12 anyway.....so I think AJ is where we will go this winter
Thanks for the help............elect TC is not what I want to get back in, been there, done that...too much $$$, and no way I am going back to that scene again.

Yeah Howard, I was in China flying kites and racing boats. But now I am back in Chicago. I plan to be in Tinley this Sunday so I will see you all there. What clas can I run my E-Maxx in? As long as I get a chance to run Howard's car over I will be happy, that is like winning the A main to me.

Brian: I told you a long time ago, just give me some notice and you can run one of my cars. Actually, this Sunday works well... I need to get my Super running for the HPI World Finals, so you can run my NTC3 if you'd like. I probably won't be 'really' running it again until next season anyways, so I'll have plenty of time to fix it after you crash it. :D

All the talk about the end of the season got me thinking.....do you guys race indoors during the Fall and Winter at the bowling alley?
If so what cars is everyone using? Micro RS4's and other 1/18th scales or mini-z's and other 1/28th scales?
If you do race, where in the bowling alley do you setup? And what days?

As a matter of fact, we do race year round, indoors, at the bowling alley. Most of the guys are running 'souped up' Micro RS4's (pan chassis conversions, big block motor and 6 or 7 cells). We would run a class for mini-z's if guys showed up with them, but what happens is you'll get a guy with a mini-z, and he will ask to try out a micro RS4, and then the following week he's got his own Micro RS4.
There are some new 1/18th scale cars out now (well, I only know of the Serpent version I saw at the Hobby show), and that would be fine to run also.
And, it would be cool if guys showed up with the new Losi Micro XXX-NT (or whatever they call it). We could use the same basic track layout but with some added obstacles and jumps. I bet guys will be showing up with those before too long.
Races are held in the meeting room (banquet room) of the bowling alley. There are some pictures from Micro races on our web site (www.chicagolandrc.com) under the 'photo gallery'. We supply pit tables, chairs and electrical outlets. Food and drinks are available and can be enjoyed right at your pit table (including beer). Racing is only $5.
We race on Wednesday evenings (tonight). The track is ready around 6pm and racing starts at 7pm and usually goes until around 9pm (depending on the turnout, of course).
We hope to see you out there.

Thanks for the speedy reply Walt. Here's what's up with me and the kids. As you may know we race at Joliet on Friday's offroad electric night during the late Fall and winter. I'm shopping around for some fun cars that we could bash with inside the house and also go to races with when the weather gets bad out. So far what I can tell is that the 1/28th scale, the miniz is a great size for "front room racing". The micro RS4 just seems way to big for bashing or racing in a 8 foot x 12 foot area. The micros seem like they'd want a 20 foot or more straightaway to be really fun.
What do you think the minimum size track for a micro RS4 would be? Fun factor is what I'm going for.
If I'm sitting in front of my computer, I respond quickly. If I'm not, it can be a while before I respond...
I actually think that the Micro RS4 can be fun in just about as small an area as the Mini-z. Plus, with the all wheel drive, you don't need as good of a surface in terms of traction (a dusty concrete floor is impossible for the Mini-z with it's rear wheel drive), and if you're on household carpet, unless it is VERY low pile or a very tight weave berber, you need something the size of a Micro RS4 to be able to run at all.
In my basement, back when it was unfinished and concrete, I had to paint the concrete floor with a special paint with sand in it to get the Mini-z to be any fun to drive. Now that the basement is finished and there is berber carpet down there, the Mini-z is useless, but the Micro still goes well over it. I bet the Losi Micro off road car would be even better for running in and around the house/garage.
8 foot by 12 foot is pretty small for any of these cars, but I honestly think that until you get REALLY small, the Micro RS4 will still be able to out maneuver the Mini-z. It will depend on your surface.
I keep forgetting how big our track is at the bowling alley for the Micros, but I'd say it's about 30 - 35 feet long and 15 feet wide, and it's a pretty good size for Micros (yes, we'd always want bigger, but much bigger and then we'd start running 1/12th scale cars instead).
I'm leaving work now, so my next response will be much slower...

I'm gonna stop by Stanton HS tonight. I saw a mini z Overland that looks really kewl. It claims to be able to handle rugs much better. Our house is all hardwood flooring, and I'm thinking it would be fun to laydown an astroturf carpet with objects under it and then make some jumps and other obstacles on top.
Yeah that Losi looked like the cat's meow at the Expo. I was there on Sunday and watched Matt Francis racing it.
Whatever I end up doing, I need to get three of the same cars running because me and my two sons would want to travel around and race at various places later this year. Tinley included.
Thanks Walt.

19T with 12th scale....probably a very slim chance of that being a regular thing. ask euge...we raced there just about every weekend last fall/winter/spring and maybe saw 1 or 2 races with a 12th scale and there were only 2-3 guys in that race.
i did hear that it is more popular at AJs.
19T might happen but for TC.

2x4 for the track set-up or are they going to use something a little more manageable? I plan to use 1/2" pvc pipe to layout a track in my livingroom. The stuff is cheap and light weight, I figure a couple of well placed phone books and the track should be pretty stable.

Yeah, 1/2" PVC pipe are great (please, 2x4...? You planning to buy a new micro after every race?), cheap, and easy to cut and organized, and I test hit my micro on PVC and it show no damage on the car or the pipe..........and I strongly recommand those race track plastic dish at the corners..........at Towers, I think they are like 5 for $15 or something.......and you don't need more then 10 (the most).....with the power of DUCK TAPE, your micro track can be done in less then 20 minutes.
Beside PVC pipe, try air compressor hose or any rubber water hose.............they are flexible and easy to roll, but I have no idea where to buy the hose only and how much......
Also, if you guys want...come to my own Micro track.........? Rex saw my track, and it should be able to have 3-4 micro to race there.....not hugh like TP, but it is 14' by 30' long..........
I am painting a new body for my micro now, I think I will be back to the Wednesday race in like 2-3 weeks later............

I use the site to find schedules for the various racetracks that are linked. I have raced at a few and find that folks use various forums to communicate. this one RCZ, the Trinity forum, and a few others. My suggestion would be to start a chicagorc.com web based forum at your site. A forum under one umbrella all chicagoland based could foster more commaraderie between the various track regulars and just bashers.
It took me months to find the various forums where specific track people communicated. Having it all under one roof would be convenient.
Minimally if you didn't want to maintain a forum, having links to the various forums the indivual track folk use would be extremely helpful.
If you didn't have your own forum here's some links I could see happening:
All Chicagoland Based Links, some of the links you could create and host the web page at your site:
1. Off road racing forums: Trinity, and RCZ, Leisure's site.
2. On Road forums: Here at RCZ
3. Micros and mini's: ?
4. Public Locations in the chicago land area to bash, on road and off road.
5. What LHS have the best selection of parts and support for the various manufacturers
6. For Sale and Trade for Chicagoland
I'm sure others could have more input too.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for asking!

Hey, it is all good, I am puting her on ebay anyhow............
Cheap lap count system...........easy, HIRE me. (or ask Diane to do the work....)
Oh, about the $300 lap counter, what if your micro does not have any antanna......? (most micro we race in TP are not running antanna for best performance....)
But compare to the $5000 AMB system, this one is definitely the best option.

I'm not sure what you are saying here....are you implying that an antenna tube sticking up in the air out of your car somehow perceivably slows the car down in some way?
The link I mentioned does say their counter system needs flags (piece of tape on antenna) to count a car's laps and speed.

You might find that you want several short pieces of air hose instead of one long piece, so just buy a cheap 3/8" hose (50 feet for $9.99 at Harbor Freight, for example) and then feel free to cut it up. We use air hose at TP for our Micro races, so be warned that these cars can put a hole in air hose, so don't use any air hose that you really care about.
As far as inexpensive lap counting, do you need it to be fully automatic, or are you OK with having someone hit a key on the keyboard each time a car goes by? Fully automatic is going to cost you (the above links are about it, plus perhaps Simpson: http://www.mgsweb.com/rc/lapcounter/index.html ), but if the keyboard only is OK, then you can just download the free version of Alycat (the race software we use) and use the keyboard to register laps.

Once you've got your micro really hauling around the track, having a regular antenna sticking up makes a huge and very noticable difference in the handling of the car (causes traction rolling). I didn't believe it until I experienced it. These cars are super sensitive to CG height, and having the stock antenna tube on probably increased the CG height by 1/2" on such a light and low car.
For running around in your living room or with rubber tires it won't make any difference. If you want to win the A-main at Tinley, you probably can't do it with a regular antenna on the car. You also can't do it with the stock, two deck chassis.

Using Walt's suggestion AND having a wireless keyboard or an audio visual presentation kinda mouse would allow a marshall anywhere on the track or trackside to tap the button, and not have to be tethered within 5 feet of the CPU.

Hey Guys.
I just got a RS4 Nitro RTR. I'm having a little problem with keeping it at idle. I can start it, but if I don't push the throtle It doesn't keep idle, I can run it, but when I stop it dies again. I read the instructions on the Engine (.15) and I'm a little lost.. I did exactally what it said to do (3 turns counterclockwise.. ect..) This is my first nitro car, I have had many Electric cars in the past. I was wondering what I have to do for the "break-in" time, how long it takes to break in an engine, and why won't it keep at idle?

Rocket,
Bring the car by HTOP 10:30 on Saturday morning. We will be racing then and there are about 15 people who can help you get your car running smoothly. It is located at 1000 Lake St. in
Oak Park, IL. From any direction, take the Eisenhower express way to Harlem avenue north (the exist is on the LEFT, not right, and go north to Lake. Turn right and go down two stop lights, it's on the corner. We race behind the shop in the parking lot.

yeah, hopefully you are not living several hours from Chicago.....bring it over to HTOP and we will be more then happy to help you out.
Nitro engine is no ESC and brushless motor........it is a B__tch to tune sometimes, from your case, IDLE needle is the first thing to check, make sure it is like 1mm-4mm opening inside.......your stock needle setting SHOULD be able to start your engine, but it usually set RICH, so it might not last too long before the engine die....but before that, LOW END needle should be the first one to set..........only if you have LOW-END needle.......I heard HPI RTR engine is 1 needle sets all......so the best thing to do is bring it over and let us take a look.
The only rule is.......if we fixed your car, you have to RACE with us.......in Super Nitro/Serpent IMPACT classs............(just kidding)

just in case you live in no mans land:
1) turn on your radio and Rec. keep the throttle in neutral position and check to make sure your carb is open a little (a few mm)
2) make sure that you have the stop set to keep the throat open.
3) check the low idle needle located below the carb opening on the side, back that out a few turns.
now see if it will idle, if you still have probs. we will all be there at Hobbytown Oak Park, this saturday.

Everything will be in my 'checked' lugage. I have a couple of really nice, big rolling suitcases that will have my RC stuff in them wrapped in all sorts of bubble wrap and stuff. Actually, it's kind of funny... I pack everything up so well for traveling, and then when I get there I put it on a track and run it at 50mph past boards and curbs... that's when it really needs the bubble wrap.
I considered shipping everything out there to Joker, but there just isn't enough time. But, since Joker will be there helping me out, I don't need to bring with anything except the cars, one radio (I'll just put a synthesized receiver in each car) and my spare parts, so it won't really be that much stuff. One big suitcase for my RC stuff, and one small suitcase for my clothes.
When me, Howard and Mike went to Michigan, we had so much RC stuff that we almost couldn't fit it in the bed of a full size pickup truck. I'll have to be just slightly more picky about what I bring with to Las Vegas.

When you get to the airport tell the TSA screeners that you have radio gear and vehicles in your baggage
Hey Walt, be prepared to have all the RC stuff hand checked at the airport by the TSA. If the luggae/cases that hold the RC stuff go thru the CTX machine it's gonna setoff all kinds of bells and whistles. Even the swab test is gonna alarm. Do not bring fuel with you, and empty the gas tanks too. Give yourself an extra 1/2 hour worth of time. The wife works for the TSA. Make sure the fuel tanks are bone dry. Any fuel whatsoever is considered an incindiary device.
If you know any other racers who regularly travel with nitro vehicles maybe give them a call and ask for tips just in case.
If you want to talk to the wife email me and I'll give you her phone number.

Thanks for the advice. Here's what I was planning on doing. First of all, I'm going to do my best to remove all traces of fuel by cleaning everything really well with brake cleaner and letting it all dry. Then I'll probably double wrap everything in Hefty bags and tie it up all really tight, wrap it in bubble wrap and hope for the best. I won't attempt to transport fuel or anything else like that.
We'll see how it goes... I hope it won't be a nightmare.
Rookie Solara

I don't think double wrap everything in Hefty bags and tie it up all really tight are the best solution, you knew they will LOOK them up and open them up, the tighter you try to protect, the more fun for them to OPEN them up.........
You knew what they will do after they found out it is just a simple RC car with engine...? DUCK TAP (or whatever that yellow tape is..) the thing several time and throw it back to your luggage.
I would say, just cover it with cloth or terry tower with rubber band.....done. They can open it up very easily and even a 3 years old can put them back together.
Beside, I don't think they can break anything for the R40 and SNRS4, it is from HPI, I never heard "BROKEN PARTS" from HPI before...........:D

Rookie S is correct. Double wrapping them serves no purpose. If there's a booger worth of fuel in the car, the detectors will alarm even through bags. My guess is that just the dried nitro dust on any parts even on the tools are gonna alarm.

The plastic bags are mostly to keep my clothes and RC stuff separated, but I could put the clothes in the plastic instead of the car. Honestly, I don't see this being any problem... all this stuff is safe, so even if it does get inspected, they'd just conclude that it's all good. The only fragile item is the radio, so I might just carry that on-board with me.

Just a friendly reminder........your radio, do you think because it is a PISTON type radio, they will think it is a real PISTON?
No wonder Yokomo team driver and Michael Salven still using STICK radio.
I am definitely joking around right now, but do you think THEY will joke around your JR piston type radio..?
P.S Yes, sorry Walt, I forgot how "CLEAN" is your SNRS4, wrapping that with CLOTH is not a very bright idea.....

Walt,
Ok, here is a very good option reduce headaches.....We can ship the cars, radio, and parts..2nd day with $2000.00 insurance via UPS from my Wifes Co. $41.00....No TSA , Nitro fuel residue, or bag searching to worry about, and it can be shipped to the hotel delivered the day of your arrival. The return trip can be PREARRANGED to come back standard ground. all you have to do is pack it up put a UPS shipping sticker sticker on the outside. Take it to the front desk and have them call UPS for a Pickup. All this will go between the Hotel and My Wifes Co. which is Travel Co. they ship packages to hotels and resorts every day. So Round trip would be $63.00. On top of that if it is lost, it's worth $2000.00. I'll pitch in if you'd like.... since it is my car that is going as well.....as a matter of a fact if you want I can handle the shipping details if necessary. This way you just get on the plane and GO....all I need is the addresses..

Nah jump right in.....what better way to learn a car but purification by fire, the car doesn't flip as easily as you might think. Straight out of the box with the setting per the inst. the car handles very nicely.

Well the Tuneing that you all told me worked. all I had to do is turn the idle up a little. But.... As I was ripping around on my street, I lost 3 of the 4 screws that holds the engine in place :(
So I guess it's off the the hobby shop again. I thought they would have tightened them down enough from factory, I was wrong.. so I'm going to take it apart, and rebuild the whole car, making sure that all the screws are tight.
Thanks again.. If I get it up and running, I'll possibly see you all in TP Sunday.

Screws that hold the engine.....You absolutley posotively must must!!!! use locktite, Blue .....NOT RED.....BLUE........all the other screws are fine because they into plastic ...... but.....any screw that is into metal you MUST use thread lock......!!!.........Don't need to take it apart...........also taking screws in and out of plastic is not always good either just get the screws and Lock tight them into place....

Don't forget the threadlock..... your kit should have a small tube of it, black tube.....wait yours was a RTR....Check all the screws that go into metal pull out and put thread lock it.

We have the track set up and ready for practice at 9am. Registration ends at 10:45, and we try to start racing promptly at 11am. 3 rounds of 5 minute qualifying plus a main. If you run electric (which I know you don't) you get two 5 minute mains, if you run nitro, A-mains are 15 minutes long, B main and lower, 10 minutes long.
The cost to race is $10 for your first class, $5 for additional classes, and $5 if you need to rent a transponder (which you will, unless you have a personal transponder). So, mostly likely, $15 to race (one class plus a rental transponder).
I hope we'll see you on Sunday... I'll be the guy sitting under the driver's stand entering everyone into the computer system... if you go to Tinley and race, you have to talk to me at some point.
And we get lots of beginners, so don't worry about that. We get a really good turnout for Nitro touring, so we're able to spread out the really fast guys from the new guys.

I have a few announcements concerning HTOP.
1: We are working out the details to hold the second Nitro/Electric challange. Im talking to Brian and Fred about getting some prizes to Raffle off and maybe something for the members of the winning team. The top 5 finishers from the Nitro TC and the Electric TC classes will participate in the race. A date will be announced soon.
2: We are also working out the details to run a Micro race day for people who dont/cant make it all the way down to Tinley in rush hour traffic. We will run them in the basement of HTOP in a large room. We will set up as large a track as possible using PVC pipe. We will run Micro (stock and modified if we have enough of each) and Kyosho Mini-Z's.
Thuesdays or thursday seem to be the best days, please let me know which would work best for you.
On a side note: are you guys running the ARM pan chassis and the third batteries down from this (http://www.blindbatts.com/cells.html) site?

Rookie, what engine did Mack buy for his new R40.....??? Albert you better start stocking parts for the R40.
We had a great day of racing yesterday, I think most will agree. Actually, most of you probably already know that because you were there... yesterday was one of our best turn-outs yet... 37 entries in Nitro Touring, and several of our 'regulars' were not running (including me, since Brian was giving my car a try). Only 4 in electric, but that's understandable as the indoor electric season is starting.
It's too bad that the outdoor season is almost over for us (only one more race left, next Sunday, September 28th). I know that a lot of people want us to run a few more races into October, but it really is just too cold and dark in the morning to get the track set up in time, and we can't start later because the Sunday night leagues start showing up around 6pm, and they need the parking spaces. Also, this gives me a couple of weekends to repaint the track boards and the driver's stand so it will all be ready for us next spring.
To answer some of Mab's questions, many of the guys running Micro at Tinley are using the ARM chassis (including me), but several are using other chassis as well. There really is quite a variety out there. You should fight the traffic some Wednesday and come on down to check it out. It might give you some ideas of how to run your micro track as well. And those 2/3's A batteries you linked to are basically what everyone runs. Some, of course, experiment with other things, but a 6 cell pack of 2/3's A's is a pretty good setup with the 'big block' motor. While you are on the ARM website, make sure you pick up a racing body too.
I hope to see all of you next Sunday for our last outdoor onroad race at Tinley for this year (the Monster Jam the following Sunday will be our last outdoor event for the season).

Sunday was awesome! Racing TC's for the 1st time this year (so sad) and easily qualified for the B main, I am ready to take on Howard in 04'. If I get another TC you all have to buy Monster trucks though, fair is fair.
In case you all missed it, Howard was on his way to A main victory when he ran out of gas due to a cracked fuel tank from an earlier bang up with another car, just 15 seconds to go. Great job though! I love to give Rookie a hard time but after Sunday he deserves praise, even from me!

I have a feeling that TP will be around for a while. mab_man / Chris and Walt / Tony you guys are doing a Great job. Keep up the good work.
Walt I will be there again next Sunday, maybe then you can take the R40 out for a spin. Hope fully I can make the A or B main rather than the C.

I hope we'll be around for a long time... at least long enough for my son to be racing with me there, and he's only 8 months old now.
I'd love to take your car for a spin next Sunday. I hope I'll get a chance. Maybe we can just switch cars for one qualifier or something, or better yet, I can just try it out during the 45 minute break. I would have done that last Sunday, but I spent the break tuning up my Super Nitro. I now have that car tuned up, cleaned up (yes, it is actually CLEAN Howard) and all back to stock HPI specs for the HPI race.
Running the races at Tinley this year has been a challenge, but overall, I have been having a great time. It will be much better next year when we can leave the track set up all summer long... not nearly as much 'back breaking' work setting up and taking down the track... just blow it off, spray the sugar water, plug in the scoring system and race... that will be nice.
And I'm still hoping to make it to at least one HTOP race.. on Saturday October 4th, and I'd like to see Mab and the other guys make it out to Tinley at least once. I think we can learn from each other and with us running on Sunday and them on Saturdays, it has worked our really nicely I think.

Oh no...........from BRIAN..? What were you smoking this morning...?
Anyhow, I am happy about the result........A-main 3rd place is considered acceptable for me.......and I knew Brian does not leave my gas tank half empty just to see me die out with only 30 second left for the race...........and I usually DON'T do triple donuts at the straight JUST to give the 3rd place or 4th place guy to catch up.........I knew there are fuels on tires and thats why my car die out........

We need to get Mack to sign up on this BBS.
It has been a good season for me, The R40, The HPI Challenge, TP, HTOP, and everybody involved. I will try and get out to some of the Micro races this winter, but I will be spending time with my little 1 and start honing his R/C racing skills, and getting the house ready for sale next spring.

I'm glad you made it out and had a good time. And your 'first time racing' experience is typical (broke early, no spare parts to keep the car running). I can probably tell you what your next experience will be like too: broke early, HAD the spare parts and kept on racing. And then, before too long, you'll realize that it has been WEEKS since you last broke something, and you can't remember the last time your engine stalled, and you'll be helping out the 'new guy' who looks at you like you've been doing this forever... it's the cycle of RC racing life. I hope you'll become one of our 'regulars' next season.

I too wish to thank all you guys at HTOP & TP. Everyone at both tracks helped be out... Howard, Albert, John, Chris, The Brothers, Scott, Walt, Tony, and a couple electric guys took the time to give advice, explain setups, donate parts, and even help repair damage.

I plan to be back next year in full force and look forward to breaking into Micros next month.

I think I can speak for the HTOP guys when I say that just a couple of guys actually coming out and saying 'thank you' makes it all worth while. I hope both TP and HTOP have great seasons next year, and every year after that for a long time.
Thank you for the thank yous.
xxxMike: I thought more about it and I would really like to buy that LMR body from you... main reason is that I don't think I can get all the built up nitro and crap off of my body to make it through airport security, plus the paint job on that body is about the best I've ever seen.

Walt,
Are you going to need a body for the R40??? Unless you are looking to Win the Concourse Challenge I have a few that have not seen any track time, I would just have to check to see if they are HPI, but for sure I have a TA body from the MI Challenge. I would just need to paint that up this weekend. Or maybe, (and I know that there is some real talent out there) there is somebody willing to paint the TA body for you to take.

All the fast guys in Japan last year for the HPI World Finals were running the Suzuki Pikes Peak rally body (I guess that of all the HPI bodies, it has the most downforce). I am going to go along with convention. I just purchased that body from Al's. I just need to slap some paint onto it (and when I paint a body, that's a pretty good description of my 'technique').
I also have a couple of HPI CLK-GTR bodies that I've run all year long on my NTC3 that I'll bring along, just in case I don't like the way the car handles with the rally body on it.
So, I should be pretty much set for bodies (especially if I can buy the one from Mike that he doesn't need anymore to use on my Super).
Oh, and Frank from HPI just sent me an e-mail saying they changed their mind about the exhaust rule... no longer needs to be HPI only (after I went out and purchased HPI manifolds and tuned pipes  ). Now they are saying that any manifold and pipe can be used, probably after a bunch of people said that they couldn't find the HPI versions in stock anywhere.

Thanks for the painting offer, but I'm running out of time here, so I think I'll just put the paint on myself and call it good. Although it would be nice to have a good looking body (on the car too), I don't really care that much.
As for the manifold and pipe, I'll just hang on to them. I can always use spares. It was more of the 'pain in the butt' factor trying to get them than the money. They are brand new and NO ONE had them in stock.

The best SNRS4 finishes from USA last year at Japan was 5th place finish (2 laps behind)............and I know TC are evey faster.
Please do your best and let us know how damn crazy are those Japanese racer (last year A main, USA and Hungary are dead last...).................I knew those racers will use HUDY setup system on a Tamiya Grasshopper to MAX its performance...
However, I just realized this......japan world final was only 15 minutes, this year, 30 minutes main........I knew that is a BIG ADVANTAGE of Walt..........(longer race time is better for him since he like to play catch up - like Michigan race)
Good luck......................(and good luck Sunday)

I'm not sure if I 'like' to play catch up, but it tends to work out that way a lot for me. I've always been a very conservitive driver, especially at the beginning of a race. I've lost too many races in the first turn pile up... my feeling is that you NEVER win a race in the first turn, but you sure can loose a race in that first turn.
At local races, I feel I can run a little conservative and stay on the lead lap and wait for a mistake to be made ahead of me, but at the HPI World Final (or any big race), that way won't work.
This will be my last nitro race of the season and my first 'big' race since Cleveland in 1987, so I'm going to push hard the whole race and see what happens. And I do like longer races, so that's to my advantage, plus I hope the Japanese guys will all have jet-lag and fall asleep during the 30 minute main. I'll do my best, but I don't realistically see the HPI World Cup sitting in my work shop a month from now.

Well, go look at the racer list.............only 6 Japanese racers will be there (so far), if I don't have a wife in the month of October, I will be there and take a spot for you at the A-main and be your blocker.........
Good thing is.....only 6, bad thing is, probably they are the BEST 6 from Japan HPI challenge.........
The more I look at the HPI R40, the more I like it.......I will have to decide to keep the SNRS4 or get the R40.
If anything, I think I'll keep the NTC3 to race at Tinley, keep the Super to race at HPI Challenge races, and get an R40 (if I really like Rex's) to also race at HPI Challenge races.
Or maybe I can just win one of the classes at Vegas and win an R40... probably not.

Nope... we raced. I post on our web site by 5am if we are going to cancel (www.chicagolandrc.com).
We ended up the season with a pretty good day yesterday. Not our best turnout ever, but not bad considering the threatening weather. I think we had 28 in nitro touring and another 6 or so in electric, so still better than a lot of tracks do on their best day.
I wanted to thank everyone that ran at our track this summer... I had a great time running the races. It was a lot of work, but in the end it worked out really well. I learned a lot and will have an even better program to offer everyone next year.
And now that our season is over, I just might make it out to HTOP next Saturday... havn't been there in over a year...
Results from yesterday's race are on our website.

Too bad I cannot make it out yesterday, I was on my way to the track around 3:00 and hoping I can catch the A and B main final.......but good thing I called Serpent_Impact and realized that you guys were already done for the day due to the weather (no lunch break is a good move)........I was planning to take some pictures and video the final main...........oh well....(actually, 15 mintues after the call, it started to rain at Oakbrook...)
Anyhow, it was a great season for me.........TP is definitely the track to have some serious racing, the track and the racers both.
So.....who took the 1st place yesterday? And Walt, have you start the R40 yet...? You don't have much time and it is no NTC3, you might need to get use to it this coming SAT at HTOP.
Nick won yesterday, followed by Bobbo and Espo. I was a couple of seconds behind Bobbo at the 12.5 minute mark (in third place after flaming out on the second refuel stop) and closing in on him when I lost a front wheel... I blame Associated... first they use machine screws to thread into plastic, then they put nylon inert lock nuts in to hold the wheels on but make the axles too short so that the nylon doesn't even touch anything. Stupid.
Anyway, that ended my race early, but no big deal. I had a good time.
I noticed that many of the 'fast' guys are not running a front differential... they are running 'spools' now in front. I'll have to try that some day to see if I like it... next year I guess.
I did take Rex's R40 around the track several times during the 10 minute break we did (instead of the normal 45 minute break). I liked it. I didn't see any problem with the clutch or anything. The car was very easy to drive the way it was set up yesterday (understeer), but because of that I couldn't get it around the track quite as fast as I could my NTC3, which was on the border of oversteering. A little bit of tweaking and I could have had that car right were I like it. I'm sure I'll get it figured out in Vegas without too much trouble.
I just hope I have the right tire combinations out there.. I bought a selection yesterday from Tony and Albert. I asked Espo for any advice for this race and he said bring lots of tires. The problem he pointed out is that you tend to find a combination you like, and then run those tires in the practice and qualifying, and then you don't have enough left for the 30 minute main, and you can't find the same tires out there. You pretty much need two sets of everything to make sure you have enough. Makes me wish that they just had a handout tire for the nitro modified class like they are doing with Super Nitro.

OK, my R40 is running out of fuel in less than 5 minutes, Walt you mentioned, reducing the Gear Ratio. Should I just change the Pinion, Spur or both? Also Walt, if you find you need to pick up any other gears for this this car while in Vegas, Don't worry about the $$ I will pay you when you get back.
