Hey! A forum for us! Okay, I'll start: First there's a mad sale on these at Ultimate Hobbies for about $99.00. There's also a front wheel drive 2wd model for $79.00. The parts support is also pretty decent from them. I haven't built mine yet, but is anyone out there willing to offer any advice on these vehicles.
Let's make this the thread burnin forum!!

I have an origional YR4 w/ full graphite upgrade.
I got it several years ago and soon after I got it, I blew a rear diff gear. I was able to find replacements, but only recently after looking at it, did i find that they might be too wide.
Anyone know whre you get old Yoke parts? I think it could still be a fun car. I have belts and CVDs. It also came w/ aluminum arms, but im going back to stock so i don't bend the metal ones.

Hey.. let's keep this forum going strong. One thing that bugs me about this YR-4M is the assembly of the diffs. The thrust bearing that is retained by a diff screw is crazy! I am specifically referring to the screw which has a small bend in it. Apparently, it keeps that diff from loosening. Well.. i busted this piece and had to go to Ultimate Hobbies to get a replacement outdrive ($13.00) and diff maintenance set ($1.40). My advice, be very very careful assembling the diffs.

Hi all, due to the winter, its very difficult for me to play my nitro thus I have decided to get a electric TC. I had been shopping around for the past week looking for a decent car. I had look at TA03/04, TRF414, TC3, both new and used but without much success. When I was at ebay earlier on, bought some parts for YR4 out of impulse,
hmmm...guessed I will be a YR4 owner by these fews days if I can find a good used roller, if not will have to go to ultimate hobbies as they have great price.

I recently bought a used Novak Mercury 27 MHz. Along with it, I have a Novak Cyclone, Trinity D3 motor, Sanyo Matched cells, Airtronics Caliber 3ps, and a futaba servo on a stock Yokomo YR4-M2. I wish I had a picture, but I don't. My set up is exactly that of the picture on the YR4 box, but with the Mercury flat on it's back mounted with shoe goo, same as the servo and esc. The car would run very smooth, but I would get some glitches like spuratic acceleration (once or twice for a couple of seconds each run). I've been told to check many things, such as the Mercury antenna wire, motor capacitors(what I've been told the most), and mounting the Mercury standing up with servo tape (I used 3M two way tape, is there a difference?). It has become much worse ever since I re-mounted the Mercury. I switched out the Mercury with the stock Caliber receiver and the car works perfect. Is my Mercury tempermental? What gives? This is my first time posting, I am new to this, so thank you for your time and bearing with me! Have a good day!
damn! i had one of these about a year ago, then i sold it.. :( it was the Yokomo YR4-M2, type J-Pro so it was pretty cool :) heres a pic of it http://www.saunalahti.fi/~tat2supp/DCP02660.JPG loads of anodised alumium on this one, not happy at all that i sold it

hi all, just got myself a YRM2pro. Anyway nice pics you got, too bad you had sold your car. Sometimes I don't know why, maybe I had a thing for the graphite chassis and deck. It looks more appealing to me than those tub chassis. I bought it because its cheaper than other cars but I still can see the potential of the chassis though it is an older car. Any views?

A whoile back, Yokomo produced bodies for the YR4. I was able to find an R33 skyline NIB. I bought it and Im considering apinting it. I want to find another one, but i can't find the tag that it came with. All the characters on the package are in kanji and I can only make out YR4 from the sticker guide.
The car as i said, is an R33 Skyline w/ 2 sets of decals.
1) KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE
2) CLARION
If anyone has a part # i would appreciate it. i looked on YOKE usa and al they have are current bodies.
I think I might fix it and leave it as a mantle piece. Not sure though. Its got complete graphite kit, CVDs, the works. How do you attach the batteries on the old YR4? tape? straps? If straps, I don't have any.

I recently bought a second hand Yokomo YR-4 K2 that I am cleaning up. Does anyone know where I can get hold of a manual for it? I've found a lot of old spares on ebay, but quite often they are a part number only, so I need to know which bits are suitable for the car.

I don't think anyone carrys parts for YR4 series anymore. Correct me if I am wrong. What I suggest is that maybe you can get parts for other YR4 car other than your model and there is a 80% chance that the parts are interchangable. DIY mod if needs to. you can check out ebay, there are parts for sale at times.

My understanding is the best place to find ANYTHING Yoke aftermarket, try Integy. I believe they still have parts for older yoke kits.
I don't race my Yoke, and what aftermarket stuff I do have, is arms etc. It all came w/ the car. Other Yoke experts might be able to tell you other places.
Anyone remember TOZAI? Are they still around? they made some sweet bodies and accessories.

Sorry dude. I misunderstood. To answer your question I personally like to use Tamiya bodies on Tamiya chassis. particularlly because they have pre drilled mounting holes (a least the older ones do). You could always drill the appropriate holes but then your hood looks like swiss cheese. As far as the width I think it should be OK but again depends on which body you choose.
Also the tamiya bods are a little thicker lexan so right away you have a heavier car. Not something I like for my racers:)

The body dimple marks for body post on my Yokomo RT-Head are not in the same place as Tamiya's. You will have to drill new holes to fit Yokomo's chassis.

Wow!!! I can't believe that there is finally a forum for us YR4 enthusiats!!
Obviously you can tell I am one from my name.
I have:
YR4M-Team
YR4M-SP
YR4-M2Pro
YR4-GP (thats Gas Power)
Alas, I did have a YR4M2-USA but I sold it for reasons I don't know why now. Anyways, I have enough parts to build another one. So when I find time one day I may put it together to complete the collection.
Anyways, I like seeing all the pics. Especially the one with the yellow wheels. How much does it weigh? Also, where can I get a front brace(the one holding the front diff and steering) like that?
As for parts on YR4, last time I spoke to a representative from Yokomo USA and they told me that they still have plenty of parts for YR4s. So send them an e-mail or give them a call. Also we should have a forum like this on Yokomo's site as well. I looked for one some time ago and was disappointed to see that Yokomo didn't have one.
Lastly, anyone know where I can get a two-speed kit for the YR4 electric?

Both YR4 sports and special are basic YR4s that are very old.
They both use a stick pack battery and require an ESC. I believe the sports is a fiberglass car and the special is graphite.
Hope that helps.

I have a yokomo yr4m2 I think. It is simmilat to the one in the picturs. I built it a few years back with all of the hop up parts and have never run the thing. I need to know if any one can give any tuning tips on them. After I purchased it I was told that car was not Yokomo's best. Is this true? I'm trying to get back into the hobby and I own about 10 types of cars. WHat are the numbers on the new batteries? I still have 1700 and 2000.

06-09-2003, 06:52 PM
You're living in a time warp dude!!
Batteries nowadays are 3000 nimh or better.
The YR4 was a good car until the TC3 came out. The MR4 that followed that car had a wider suspension and more roll center than any of the versions of the YR-4. However, before that the YR4-M2 USA was one of the top cars of its time.
How to tell if yours is a USA version? First of all you chassis needs to have sliding battery trays and chassis post holes down the middle to be a YR-4 M2. The regular M2 had the red mini shocks. The USA had the large volume silver shocks.
If yours is an M2Pro, then it does not have any sliding battery trays. That car was tough to handle because it was very stiff and the suspension was not updated to adjust for it so it was very twitch. (Smooth hands need only to apply)
Just have fun with your YR4 don't try to race it. If your going to look for a good racer to get back into the game without breaking the bank, get a used TC3. Got mine for $50 and it just as good as the rest of them provided you give it the right amount of TLC.

Anything that has a 4mm offset is good. Integy has some on blow out special thats made of an almost bulletproof nylon but a bit heavy. Otherwise you could use the Yokomo 10 spoke or or Inch-ups. They're both 4mm offset. However, if you're using belted tires, then you can't use the Inch-ups. Some of the HPI wheels are available in 3mm offset which whill work as well with a 1mm spacer.

Try looking for them from HPI or Traxxas. Both of them have cars that use the metric 5 X 11 bearing. Also try Kyosho they use a 5 X 10 bearing.

What;s the difference between the YR4M and the YR4 sports. The guys at ultimate hobbies are confusing me
The YR4-M is the Masami edition. Thats what the "M" is for. It is similar to the one pictured in the posts before. It uses the mini-red shocks and has battery slots for side saddle battery packs. The chassis and shock towers are all woven graphite.
The YR4 sports is an earlier watered version of the YR4. It has a black chassis (not sure if graphite or black fiberglass) and uses a battery tray, similar to the ones used on the early RC10s, to hold a stick pack. Also the top deck does not have the spring mechanism like on the YR4-M.
Most of the guys at Ultimate are young so they don't know much about the YR4 because it is somewhat old. Also, Ultimate gets in so many new stuff that to know it all, it would make your head spin. However, if you have to talk to someone there that knows it all, ask for Moto. He's not very personable to deal with at all but if you need knowledgeable information, you'll have to bite the bullet to talk to him.

Believe it or not they still sell the little red shocks. They sell the mini shocks in blue. The USA version came with big bore aluminum shocks.
To make your car handle better, it must roll more into the turns. I found that increasing the ride height to about 6 -7mm. Put the rear camber link on the inner most hole on the shock tower. In the front put the camber link on the outer most hole. This way the front rolls less than the rear. Try that set-up and let me know how it worked. :)

By controlling the amount of roll between front and back, you also control traction from front to back. The YR4 likes to roll into the turns. However, if the front rolls too hard into a turn, the result would be having the inside rear tire to lift. Obviously you will lose rear traction because the burden of all traction would be on the one tire that remains on contact. When the forces on that one rear tire beome too great for the tire to hold, you break traction and your rear end will spin out. So what is key is to make sure the rear end remains in contact as you turn. Thats why you limit the front end roll to prevent tire lift in the rear. At the same time you also want the rear end to roll as much as possible to make sure the two rear tires remain on contact. If the rear doesn't roll enough after limiting the front end roll, you could experience traction rolling as the suspension is unable to suck-up the lateral forces (from rolling)and result in providing fulcrum to the lateral forces such that it will tip over. (I hope that explains it) Anyways that is why.

Wow, I didn't have a chance to see you pics before I posted my reply. Looking at your car is like looking into yesterday. I haven't seen my car like that for years. I also see that you are using the original super narrow tires. When using those tires, you really have to depend on adjusting roll because thats the only way those tires are going to work for you. Anyways, a nice car. However, I would move the speed control to the chassis in front of the battery instead of having them velcroed to the battery strap. You don't want to chance having the speed control fly off on you after getting side swiped.

Thanks alot yr4dude, you are the best !!! I added two O rings to limit upward travel to front suspension. So the front suspension now have less upward movement during cornering at the expense of possible understeering. I haven't try this new setup yet...... but the car is currently oversteering. So your idea could be the solution of my oversteering problem !!

Everyone!!
The YR4 cars is based on an old design for the Yokomo offroad buggy. Of course, since it is old, you should take it for what it is, an old car. The most reliable parts source for these cars is Ultimate Hobbies ast www.ultimatehobbies.com As far as parts goes you can treat it like Legos by mixing and matching from other cars of previous or later versions. Its up to you and your own expertise.
I hope that answers some questions about these cars. Have fun guys.

Hi there I just found this thread and am glad to see the YR4's are still going strong. I have been thinking of retiring my second Yoke from racing (before I crash it and can't find parts!). At first I have been considering the Tamiya EVO3. Tonight I have found my new car when it's available.
If you have not seen the new Shaft Drive MR4-TC

Here is a pic of my current Yokes:)
Where did you get the belt tensioner for the yr4 on the right?

I just used servo tape back in the day. You can also use Shoe Goo. Just go to Walmart and head to the shoe section for it. Works great. But make sure you let it dry.
Anyways, I still have my M2 Pro (japanese version). Been sitting on the shelf for years. The newer cells don't fit. I thought about making a custom battery tray for it. But been too busy. I wouldn't mind bringing it out again just for the fun of it. :D

i've noticed that when i tap something with the wheels, that the axels bend real easily ever since i started using super narrows, but i don't know if that could be the cause of it. suspension still feels very soft. but most importantly, towerhobbies sells the drive belts. also, the graphite parts still have a lot of shock value lol
