View Full Version : H.O.B P-51D 1/2A Mustang E-Conversion
Hello All,
I'm back again w/ my E-conversion airplanes. This time, I wan't to convert this STANG into a hot parkflying machine.
Wing span: 36 in.
Wing area: 216 sq. in.
Wt. with radio: 22-28 oz.
Wing loading: 14.6-18.6 oz./sq. ft.
Length: 28.5 in.
2-4 channel radio reqd.
Engine: TD.051 - .10 2-stroke
With this particular P-51D Mustang, everything goes together per plan. Easy plane to put together but the one thing, that I did not like in particular is the sanding and the motor configuration.
---I will just download all the pics, and if anyone is trying this conversion, post and I will give you tips and info.:)
Fuse
Motor:
I made a hole to the firewall to accomodate a 400 type motor.

That is an interesting conversion. I had thought about it as a platform for the AF 010. In the photos, it looks way over-built for an eletric. Is that what you meant by all the sanding?
Hi Mike,
The sanding is from the nose cone, scoops. From the balsa
block:)
**it looks way over-built for an eletric.**
It's perfect MT:)
Now for the interesting part. The motor mount. The H.O.B. Mustang is meant for glow engine that fit's exactly in the nose of the stang.
I tried different idea's, that I know, but none of them work. Jim Best sent me an email of his conversion. Pic below is how, I was meaning to do mine, but it was too late, for I already glued the firewall together, tuned the angle and thrust line. I'm set, but if I were to do it again, I would do it like this.
Jim Best conversion, P-51 motor mount.
My version is built with a nylon motor mount. Here's the pic. I finally got the thrust line and angle that I need. I couldn't get the other configuration, so I cheated:D and got out the eay way;)
Let's skip the wing. The easiet part of them all.:)
Here's the plane. Notice my lightining holes:D and I also have a lightning holes on the top and bottom. Just to save weight.
Let skip some parts, for the rest are guided by the plans and instructions.. I did make one mod, that would enable you for easy access w/ out removing the wings.
here's where I left off.:D
I finally did some work on my H.O.B P-51D Mustang. I'm really happy of the result.
Here's the main reason why, I am so happy w/ this conversion. My work was paid off, again here's why. 12.5oz:D  Wooooohoooo, this will keep me out of trouble ($$$) and can use either sp400 motors w/ GB or DD w/ BL motor. I am satisfied.:)

I was thinking of doing the same conversion. What motor, controller and cells are you using in yours? What's the cell count? Thanks
-Frank

WOW 129.3:cool:
My friend ran the numbers once again. The best possible motor that can take her in that mph is the mega 4T, 12 cells, but alos means cooking the batteries:( ... Worth a try:D

2NG,
That Mustang looks good!! I like the fact that the lines are still there. Some of the others out there really only favor a Mustang instead of look like one.
That weight will really make that thing go. Congrats on another great job!
Roger
RC,
Thank you for the kind words. I changed her maiden flight to this Saturday, I wasn't feeling it last Sunday.
I had to take out the magnets, I thought, It was going to help hold the canopy hatch down, but came to realize that it contributed to adding weight. I hot glue the servo's in place, just to save as much weight, as possible.
Here's my Numbers: Megax5T / master airscrew 7x5.
8 HeCells - 25.8 oz. ---- 16 amps
9 HeCells - 26.5 oz. ----- 17 amps..
10 " " - 27.4 oz. ----- 18.8*sigh barely hitting 20 amps.
I'm really satisfied with the weight (*Happy) I'm predicting, that this Stang, will not be as hot, as my other planes, but I ordered a Hacker motor, I think that should give it a good jump, plus shed off a fraction of oz. not a lot, but it will do the job.
I also ordered a Singaporian 3D airplane, w/c I saw being flown as a gasser. 22 oz.. I did a thread on it on Ezone.. Should be a killer plane. My answer to the E3D and Lazer 3D:D --- I'm hanging up my Pylon Racers for now, and concentrate on my warbirds, I have 8 of them, that I have to finish. AND yes!! The Cub, hehehehehehe. I'm still loyal RC.
This winter, I will be building Peanut kits:) and gym flying...

Hey 2NG,
That's neat to keep the weight down that much. It may not be the fastest bird, but I am sure it will scoot along!
Going to go the small route. They are fun. I am building a Lil Red for a Christmas present for a family friend in MT. They lived in Fresno and were close to the kids. Their son is about 3 by now, so it will be something to hang in his room.
Have you seen the Lil Red?
Where will you get to fly indoors? That is neat!
Take Care,
Roger
RC,
hehehehehehe... I would love to buy that bird of yours, but you know me, I rather build one... I like it..
YUP!!! P-nut and 3D flying, prepairing myself. Sprinkling here in the Bay. City of Newark might grant me (us) a gym to use for indoor flight. I just got off talking to one a neighboring school's principal, and it sounds like it's a go, but nothing is clear yet.
I love you little Red; you sent me a pic of it a while back. where can I get the plans if I where to make one?

Motor: Mx5T
Prop: 7X4 Master Airscrew
Battery: 10 HeCells From EdogFlight.com
Rx : Hs 555
Servo : Hs 55
--- First Attempt, aborted due to Rx battery problem (low batt) Planekrazy and I (mostly him) checked all the alignment and everything seemed to be A. Okay..
--- Second Attempt, range check, all controls, power, everything. A. Okay.
--- HandLaunch... WOOOOOOOOOHoooooooooooooohoooooo, she's a beautiful bird up in the sky, right away. I did not hesitate a minute to try out her aerobatic capabilities. He can Tango, dango, bamboo... I love it, I love it....

I will give this plane a keeper's vote of a 10, , A++ for a scale conversion.
