Off-Road tire help

I understand the importance of marking tires for oval and on-road cars, but why are some off-road tires i see marked left & right or have the direction marked on them? Might be a stupid question but thanks anyways.

They're directional because the tread will get rid of dirt best when they go in a certain direction - also, running the tyres the wrong way may increase rolling resistance, slowing the car down

So how do you know what direction there is nothing to tell you?

If they're not marked, they're not directional - if the tread looks directional, go for an arrangement where the "pointed" bit of tread is facing the front of the car, and hitting the ground first.
