I own a SVM Columbia 1/5 Scale car and enjoy it alot!

Specs:

Zenoah G2D "99 Engine (91' Octane Fuel) 25:1 Mixture
2 Chamber Pipe
4 Disk Brakes
Hitech Servos 2x
Tires: Chronos 30 Hard (Front) 27 Soft (Rear)
Multiplex Radio and IPD Receiver
Body Honda Accord

Top Speed 65mph

The SVM MK5 car is a very competitive car it doens't weigh as much as harm's and fg's which gives it an advantage on the track they are also much cheaper and great for thoes wanting to learn about 1/5 Scale cars.
They used to be sold at SVM Speedway (KOMATSU ZENOAH SPEEDWAY) but are no longer sold there they do have a nice race track though.

They no longer sell them in the United States but can be purchased from Canada (GG.Royal) or Australia (Alro Racing).

My Car cost $650 with out radio. What a deal !:)

As you can see the engines stand straight up.... Kinda diffrent form the FG, and Harms.....

Toyotatogo

With correct gearing these cars can hit 65mph.......

Svm cars win by less weight distribution on the car.....Said to be 10 to 15 pounds lighter than FG and Harms.....

Toyotatogo

The cheapest I have seen for a decent 5th is about $1,200.00 easy....

I lucked out on the SVM Columbia for $650 because I brought two of them total of about $1,300.00......

But now the Svm Columbia Mk.5 have jumped back up to 1,200 each.......  on the east coast.....

Is that the engine that is on the Super goped?

matkg
07-17-2003, 01:21 PM
Pretty much, 1/5 scales normally use goped engines.

matkg
07-17-2003, 01:29 PM
rcracer, actually when you buy a new car (atleast fg's), engine is included. only money you have to shell out for the engine is if you want it modified.

best thing about 1/5 scale engines? it can last for years. just go to your local goped shop and pick up a new piston ring for $8, put it in and engine's like new. the zenoah on my 1/5 scale is already 2 years old. Just spend $30 for a new piston and piston ring and it's speeding like a new engine.

Just got word that their is a new bigger and better spark plug for all Zenoah 230RC Engine owners called NGK Iridium ........:D
I just ordered some the other day and have yet to use them I hope they are as good as they say that are.....If you do plan to run these new plugs I reccomend that you run a resistor cap to cancel the noise from the spark plug to your radio you will thank me later for doing so and lower cab bodies will not work with this taller plug sorry .......

Here are some cool links below of were I was able to get some good infomation on them before purchase......:)

Now that I have changed my spark plugs to something more efficent I am looking into really getting some major horsepower out of my stock Zenoah 230RC motor so I plan to purchase this Firstone pipe which has been dynoed to boost me from a stock 2.5hp to a killer 4.7hp.   ...... But I am having so much trouble in finding this pipe So if anyone knows who sells it or has one here in the Americas who wants to sell let me know....:D

Forget those crappy NGK iridium spark plugs!

Most of the guys using them have had serious problems because of the amont of oil we need to drive.
The NGK iridium are made for a very lean mixture like 1:50-1:100.

With 1:25-1:33 they last not as long as expected.
Sometimes they even last for 2 minutes!!

They're not broken but require massive cleaning to get them OK.

@Toyotago:
You won't get 4,7 HP just because of another pipe:rolleyes:
Check out www. firstonetuning.com to find a dealer near you or get one at www. ABC-modellsport.com.

Toyotatogo
07-23-2003, 11:39 AM
So your calling Ian Oddie of Oddified Motors a liar??? So this information here is truly false is that what your saying? Sure says 4.7hp @14,000rpms from the dyno sheet...

Here Take a look yourself (SVM02 Tuned Pipe)......
http://www.alroracing.com/firstone_SVM_02.htm

For that matter check out all the other pipes he dynoed too from Sambas to FG Tuning Pipes...
http://www.firstonetuning.com/versione_2/English/frameprod.htm

Ian Oddie has an huge reputation in 5th scale models cars/engine modifications dating back farther than I can imagine just ask Steve Pond he knows....

As for the spark plug # CR8HIX I have heard nothing but good reviews from it and cannot wait to try it.

Toyotatogo
07-23-2003, 11:49 AM
FYI.....

Ask Rob Lochier of Alro Racing UK The guy behind the modified "Blue Fire Engines" He agrees also with the current specs. of 4.7hp with the change of the pipe to a SVM02....:D

Read the whole thread from below I am named (76impala) asking Rob Lochier a question about the SVM02 Pipe he later breaks it down in the thread of the current spec of just changing the pipe itself....

OkOK....

if you really believe that you gain nearly twice the power only from a different pipe, stick to it. Hope you are not that dissappointed if that won't come true...

What I know is that my new Seuffert Tuning Engine has about 4.9 DIN-PS (not BHP) using the FG Big Power pipe with single muffler.
Maybe I should have spent the bucks for the Firstone pipe and saved the 650€ for the engine.:D

but it seems that you have a lot experience with the G230 since last week
Besides that you should remove burrs inside the cylinder to avoid serious damage! it seems that Zenoah is a bit sloppy regarding that.

As to the Spark plugs...
I didn't say the CR8/7HIX are not good, I just said they tend to "brake" quite easily. trust me because I cleaned a lot of CR8HIX the last months. If you're really serious racing go for the Iridium, but if you're not going for World championship, save your money. 15 bucks for a spark plug is not that cheap...

Toyotatogo
07-23-2003, 03:12 PM

Here is me installing the last touches ........ I am installing a servos I just had rebuilt from Hi-tech for burnt amps and motor problems this is the fourth time i have sent this servo to be repaired for this...... And about to install header and tuned pipe later on that day..... I also installed new pinion gear, clutch bell, shoes, shafts etc....

I head out to the GFW and am denied entry on their grounds... So i head to a alternate area to finish breaking in my Zenoah Engine.... what a bummer..... If the day couldn't get any worse it did ..... The Hi-tech 5735MG servos I talked about eariler about once again kicked the bucket ...... I am fustrated in how a $85.00 Top of the Line Digital Servo breaks like this so easy.... I didn't even get to run it.....

I am new to 1/5 but recently came 3rd place and TQ for my class at the CANADIAN ROAR NATIONALS with SVM Columbia 2000 RTR. On that day, i suffered from low gearing ratios at the straight, but otherwise the whole car is stable.

I upgrade the servos from stock RTR to HITEC's, and use my own electronics, make some cable brake adjustments, fine tuned the suspension, droop and that's it. ENGINE IS STOCK. and I had the same lap time with one of the HARM drivers with mod engine.

I was impressed.

I am definetly thinking about stepping into the 1/5 scale realm. But I have a few questions:

1. I have had many nitro cars (1/10 and 1/8) and hate the whole tunning deal. Is it as hard and do you have to tune these engines as much.

2. After doing some research I like the SVM's but I cant seem to find a dealers website or any real info besides what I see in their ads in R/C Car Action and info on this thread. What do the SVM's cost compared to others and are the parts readily available.

3. When searching for bodies I noticed different width's...do most bodies come in different width's because of difference's in the car...and which width is the most popular?

any help would be great...Thanks:D

As for lengh 535mm wheelbase is the most popular to go with in car and body size .

Maybe youīll kick my as in a drag, but not for sure, after all both my engion and muffler are tuned. Iīv gott aproximately 5 hp at the moment and I am going to buy the new zenhoa engion before next summer. You know, zenhoa is introducing a new engion, it is as powerfull as a seufert-tuned zenhoa 230 rc, wich is the most powerfull engion att the moment.

Now I donīt shop there, weīv got some stores in sweden as well, they buy the H.A.R.M parts from ABC in germany, Lauterbacher comes from germany too and FG also, and those three brands are used on my car. Mostly harm of course...

We donīt have the mk in sweden and not i europe att all I think, do you mind telling me a litle about it and give me som pics. It locs agfully simple too me and not as well develloped as harm and lauterbacker and RS5 (the totaly carbon car) butt maybe the weight does it in the races. But the new mk is fully made in aluminum, isenīt it? and then it must be heavy as the rest of the brands cars. Anyway, why are the engion mounted facing the sky??, seams pretty dumm since it gets a higher centre of gravity and it roles over mouch easier, due to that and the low weight..

Of course I race it, but only in sweden soo far, I know where you can get those Pegaso rims wit almoust every kind of tier you wich. there is a man here in sweden who sells them, you can take a lock att his sight and then mail your order. I recomend ordinary rimms and tires but the pegaso system works ok and I think it works ass well on traks with high gripp.
The car is soo clean because I have poliched every litle screw and bought a lot of new parts for it this winter. It is standing in my room and I cant stand a dirty looking car the whole winter..

Here is the sight, you may chose englich lanuage too: http://www.uffesminiracing.com/

Hmm. now I see that even if you chose englich some text are in swedich. anyway, the rimms cost 120 kronor and the tires 330kronor for one pair, that is 450kronor. which is about 50 US dollar. mail him and ask fore prices and possibilety to send it to you

Rewinds back to 6-20-04

Every Sunday provided I am not busy and it is sunny outside I go to whatever parking lot I can find to run all of my remote control r/c cars. This seemed like an ordinary Sunday to me *sigh* what could possibly go wrong?

Well It first began when we tried to start the MK.5 for some reason this day it was harder then ever to get the darn thing to fire up? For one it kept flooding, the battery then died had to be recharged and the carb settings were all wacky! Anyhow after re-charging the batteries and re-setting the carb settings we were able to get a pulse from the giant, with another tug at the pullstart she grumbles to life raaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh .

So, I'm excited that we finally got the darn thing started so I began running the car up and down the parking lot. My dad then decides lets radar clock it to determine it's speed. I nod and begin driving down to the end of the parking lot some 200 yards east and turn around to do a pass coming west, he's standing right behind me where as the car will pass right by me and him some 10 feet. My dad somehow gets this idea he will stand in the path of the car coming at him to get a better reading from the radar gun  I look. He then tells me not to worry he will be able to get out the way in time and for me to just worry about driving the car, but I get this feeling he's not going to uh *sigh* you know what happens next. I come around for a pass I'm watching the car coming at me , it passes in front of me then I turn my head and WHAMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!! my right front tire slaps my dads foot as he tries to to a jump to miss getting ran over he goes up and then down flat on his backside I'm thinking I told you so in my mind ,but am more worried about my car I mean my father so I go and see if he's okay. He gets up and is somewhat dizzy and in some pain in his ankle but walks it off he will be okay after some rest. The damage to the car was minimal just one cracked lower suspension control arm which I will more then likely JB Weld then repair with a new one because parts take to long to order and I'm to impatient to wait for them anyhow.

Too bad about the car toyota. Maybe you could upgrade to aluminium arms as they are MUCH stronger. If you hit something the plastic ball joint breaks and not the arm. Much cheaper and easier to fix.
Oh yeah, hope your dad is ok.

SO,,, what was the speed? We're getting about 44Mph at the track. (which is 8000 feet above sea level)

They have been discontinued sadly for sometime now. I'm still holding on to mine to this day. It's very unique considering the chain driven setup.
