View Full Version : Professional RC Photographer?

I am the marketing coordinator for AMB (the transponder and timing system company).
I can't seem to find a professional photographer who takes photos at major events of racing action. I have contacted every major RC publication to find out who does their mag photos with no luck. They will not allow us to purchase rights to any of their photos.
This is why I have come to the RC community hoping to find a professional photographer who would like to sell us an image or two for use in our website and brochures. Most photos I've seen from events are too far away and show more of the course than the cars. I am looking for high-resolution (min 300dpi) close-up images preferably of Serpent vehicles in action.
Please contact me with photographer information:

For closeups of serpents in action, please visit your local adult book store :D
Good luck to you, sir.
And a freebie BTT for ya :)

Ryan - I tried sending you an email, but it bounced back. I don't recall having ever head from you regarding this, but I'm pretty sure we can help you out. I will call you.

Steve,
I look forward to hearing from you on Monday. Not sure what mag you work for (I assume RCCA or RC Nitro), but I did talk with Walter (?) at RCCA and he was unable to get me anything. I had been wanting to use it for our new trade show booth graphics, which could have featured RCCA as you guys typically put stickers on your test cars.
We were doing some maintenance on our in-house server this weekend, and we did have some e-mails bounce. You can also try me at ryankramer30005@bellsouth.net
Jeepinator- Nice one! Very clever!
Keep racing hard! -oh wait I mean lots.

Ryan,
There are two excellent r/c photographers on this board. One of them has the nick BarryA, the other Hemi. I know Barry is an amatuer but his work is some of the best I have seen from the few pics he has posted and you can view some of it in the Bodies and Paint forum. Hemi has not been on for a while but if I am not mistaken, he is a professional photographer and his static work is simply stunning.

haha, its cool to see my name thrown around here...
I am an amateur photography, and mostly shoot full size 1:1 cars. Im just getting into shooting RC's and Im really enjoying it. I would be more than happy to help, but I do not know anyone who owns a Serpent. I live in Houston/Cypress Texas, and if anyone is willing to show up with a Serpent I could snap some action shots.
I currently shoot with a Canon EOS D60 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneosd60/) and for action shots I usually put on the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS (http://www.epinions.com/elec-review-7BC7-26C3952-3A214818-prod1) .
The Camera is 6.3MP and creates images at 3152 x 2068 which range from 1.8MB to 7.5MB depending on compression level settings.
On Edit:
BTW, I know its not an RC, but this is an example of something I shot last weekend. This will give you an idea of the quality.

I have some shots from the 2002 winter nationals, few serpent 235s and 1/8th scales in the photos if your interested i can get them scanned and can email them to you or can just post some here. Although the resolution on the ones here will not be the best.

Ryan@AMBitUS, I saw in your first thread that you deal in Timing equipment. Is this equipment just for RC's, or do you have stuff for full size cars as well. Im putting on 2 road race events (1:1 cars) this year and need to pick up some timing gear.

That's a cool picture. Nice work. Being in the RC magazine world I must let everybody know that shooting a full-sized car is much easier that a small RC car. Tracking a small car is much more difficult, nt only for the user, but for the camera. Anybody that's gone to an RC race and tried snapping off some race shots will know. Our photgrapher is used to shooting motocross (and adult stuff) and he always says it's difficult. I'm not debating anybody's ability to shoot, it's just I know from experience the difficulty.
Ryan, where are you located? If Steve can't help you we are in SoCal.

I'll vouch for that, shooting electric off road was cool when i did it at the winter champs out here. They had a nice 4x4 to rest my telephoto lens on, got some nice shots. I think shooting off-road is more fun then doing on road, get the dirt flying all over in the picture, better atmosphere.

I agree RC is more difficult than shooting 1:1 cars.
The weekend I shot that Mustang a friend had brought his T-Maxx out and was running it. He made a few quick passes in front of me and I was able to get this shot:
http://www.fordpower.net/hosted/hsps/tmaxxb1.jpg
I only took 5 shots as I had about 12 more Mustangs to shoot and only 1.5 hours of light left.. :D Its not the best picture in the world, but its not bad for a quick shot with no planning. I shot at 1/125th of a second and managed to keep the T-Maxx sharp even though it was going 30+MPH.
Ill be going out this weekend with some friends to shoot some Off-road RC's, Ill post the results sometime next week.

HauntedMyst: Thanks for the help. I see BarryA has chimed in.
BarryA: Nice quality shots. Good lighting on the Mustang shot. Stopping the action at such a close distance is pretty tough and you did a nice job with the T-Maxx. I would like to see if we can get a shot of a Serpent car. The founder of our company's brother started Serpent, so we have this mutual advertising thing. I will contact you about getting a shot off the board.
We do make automatic timing systems for all types of sports from RC to the X-Games, to motocross and beyond. I am proud to say we make stuff that SCCA, HSR, NASCAR, F1, AMA, IMSA, and many others use. Definitely let me know what you need and we can work something out on price reduction for images. We also rent systems out (except RC) for the weekend if that fits your needs too.
DerekB: Haven't heard from Steve, so e-mail me some samples I'd like to see what you have.
Distro: Can you send me a few small samples of what you have?
Thanks everyone for your help.
I will be honest that I don't frequent the board since I don't have an RC car (other than the two Mini-Z's we have here in the U.S. office on extended loan from Kyosho for "testing purposes"), but if anyone ever needs help with their AMB transponders or timing systems, please let me know.
