Painting contest coming Feb. 1 2003 [Archive]

Calling all painters!

Beginning Saturday February 1, 2003 we will be holding a series of paint competitions.

First 2 weeks: Best paint (anything goes!!)
Second 2 weeks: Best street/race (anything that looks at home on the street or on the track. Race schemes can be real or made up)

Each contest will be judged on three criteria (1-10, 1- my cat can do better, 10- exceptional):

Best paint- Difficulty, execution, and over all design.

Street and Race: Execution, detail work, over all design.

All forms of photo editing are highly looked down on and may result in disqualification!! Photo quality is not being judged, the body only needs to be clearly visable.

The winning bodies may appear in Radio Control Car Action or R/C Nitro!

The finalized rules will be posted with each competition.

The first of each month will bring a new set of competitions and the restrictions for the following month's competitions.

Hey Mab... this contest is a great idea - reminds me of the old HPI forums ;)

It's about time I get "motivated" back into painting... my last paint job was in November (Nissan 350Z GT) and even that took me months to complete.

It is cool to see this type of "Fun" carried over from other defunct forums.....

I'll have an entry and I am sure this will inspire alot of "kewl" Paint jobs....

Update: The winning bodies from each month will be sent to RCCA and MAY grace the pages of Radio Control Car Action or R/C Nitro (the first post has been edited accordingly).

AcidBurn: Obviously you were a big influence in getting me motivated (the hpi one was great!!!). I hope some of the other big painters will follow your lead and get painting (and posting) again.

dkangel: We are still determining the judging, we will have it finalized before the first competition begins.

Dropkicked: we will have a new set of competitions each month. So keep practicing assbackward painting, you have some great potential! :)

Serpent, if the paint is great, show it off in the comp, the extra holes won't really count against you .

Serpent: by all means enter it!! The paint job is getting judged, not the mounting. As long as you have a picture that clearly shows the paint scheme you are fine!

If you want any help judging, I'll be glad to help. I don't have any intention of entering the contest, since the last time I did something like this, I caught a lot of flak since I'm a "professional painter".

Cosmo, there will be no such flak with this contest. The contest is open to all painters, professional or not.

To All, If people feel intimidated by having professionals in the contest, then they are looking at the contest from the wrong perspective. The objective of the contest is to show case the best work and inspire people to push themselves technically and creatively. For the non pro, its a chance to see how you measure up, which can be tremendously inspiring. For the pro, its not only a great chance to inspire others by showing them what you can do but to also teach others through example. Since so few of us actually get to see each others work in person, show off threads and contests like these are the only chance we have to see other peoples work and this is how we learn this part of the hobby. Every time I see some of Bob H's, Mike Ogles, JS Bodies or Charlie B's work, I learn a little something. Were it not for people posting on the old HPI board, I would have never learned to paint.

Updates:

We will combine the STREET and RACE into a single catagory because they aspects that make a great a winner in this catagory are some much alike. See below for the judging criteria, do not be worried that a race car will always win, the criteria has been carefully planned to prevent this.

Best paint criteria:

Difficulty (score 1-10)
Design (score 1-10)
Execution (score 1-10)

Best Street/Race criteria:

Design (score 1-10) (race schemes do not need to be real teams)
Detail work (score 1-10)
Execution (score 1-10)

Judging:
For the first few months the judges will be people who have distinguished themselves in the painting hobby by either their skill and/or generosity in helping others.

The first post has been edited accordingly.

HauntedMyst and mab_man20: you dont have any idea how fugging big the 5 extra holes are. I'm ashamed of even mentioning it...

Anyways, I hope that we get a nice clean shell for this. If not, then I might have to borrow one...(I'm OK with an airbrush, but im a better masker)

Mab,

I don't know how long you are planning to run each contest or if you have different themes planned, but I'd like to make some suggestions for your consideration.

1. Every now and again, hold themes to best paint, something along the lines of "Classic Flames" or "Wild Fantasy" or "Four colors or less" and "Precut Masks a Must" just to make it more interesting and to throw the gauntlet down as a challenge to established painters.

2. Since a lot of people don't have an airbrush, every now and again it would be nice to see a "Cans only" competition. I know skidmark can do amazing things with cans and it would be interesting to see people push the limitations of cans.

With each of these, it should be posted a month in advance so people can prepare a head of time.

What do you think?

Haunted: very very good ideas!

Because there will only be 2 competitions, each competition will be open for entrees for 2 weeks each.

The first competition will have no restrictions. I will post the restrictions for the MARCH competition at the begining of the FEBRUARY competitions. That way everyone will have a month to work on their entrees.

If anyone else has any suggestions feel free to post them. They will all be taken into concideration.

Here is a list of some future competitions (not in exact order, but close). We will still throw "anything goes" competitions in rather freqently or to meet popular demand.

Best paint:
Pre cut masks only
Cans only
4 colors or less
Drips/flames

Street/Race:
Muscle cars only
Japanese cars only (and/or european)
must have cockpit/interior
F1 and GT bodies only
Famous movie cars

Thats what we have come up with so far. Again if you have an idea please post it!

Theme suggestion- "Heavy Metal"

If that means rivets, sheet metal and tear-aways to you, cool-
Maybe it suggests a rolling reproduction of a Metallica CD jacket it doesn't matter....so long as it ties into the theme somehow.

based on the painting will there be a judging based on painting methods? such as airbrush or can. because not everyone has access to an airbrush, esp. me:D cause i want to enter but i know u i can't compete with someone who does lots of painting and has access to high quality equipment.

May be a dumb question. BUT. is this just for touring car bods? or is it open to monster truck and buggy bodies and would they be seperated in to a couple diffrent comps.

so what is the next competition goin to be? if its street racing, that i can do. but can't it be limited to a "street" car or "racing" car, not the ooh soo fancy paint job like hara's car. like simplicity or something. nothing fancy.

I think there should be one where the paintjob has to be modeled from a real car. You have to submit a pic of the actual car along with your R/C car. They don't have to match eactly, but should be really close.

BODZ: Head over to the other thread to enter. All the rules are posted in the first message of the other thread. You will only be able to enter two (2) bodies in the competition and you need to supply the required info as specified in the rules.
