02-01-2003, 02:45 AM
Welcome everyone to the first Best Paint Competition!!
The best paint competition will be open for entrees for two weeks and will close at 12:00 AM February 14th.
In the following two weeks (Feb. 14- Feb. 28) we will hold the first Street/Race Competition.
Each month we will hold a Best Paint and Street/Race competition. If you cant get your bodies done this month, dont worry there will be plenty more to come!!
The winning bodies may appear in Radio Control Car Action or R/C Nitro!!
RULES for Best Paint:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters are welcome!)
5) Please refrain from insulting bodies in anyway.
6) Must fall within this month's restrictions (Feb restrictions: NONE, anything goes!).
7) Only 2 entrees per person (change made on 2/7)
8) Bodies should be painted within the last 2 months (changed 2/7)
Each submission must include the following:
Body manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Inspiration (could be another paint job).
And of course, a body.
This month Hauntedmyst will be judging the Best paint competition.
Each body will be judged by the following criteria (1-bad, 10-excellent):
Difficulty (score 1-10)
Over all design (score 1-10)
Execution (score 1-10)
The photo and background will not be judged. All that is needed is a clean photo that clearly shows the body.
Each month we will place some restriction on all entrees.
March restrictions:
Best Paint- Must use only commercially available masks.
Street/Race- Muscle/classic cars only.
GOOD LUCK

Here is my entree/example.
Body: The body is a Proline Accord, 190mm.
Paint: I used Parma fasescent purple, faswhite, fasblack, fasflourescent green (just a little, hehe), Spaz-stix liquid metal, and radio active Green.
Mask: I used XXX-Main's "Wicked Flames" and bob dively's liquid mask.
Inspiration: I had the "wicked flames" and glow in the dark paint just sitting around. The combo was just to good to resist.

I don't really expect this to win, but I still wanna show it off. :D I might be able to find some better pics later also.
Body-Pro-line GMC sierra low-profile
Paint-Mix of kaskolors metallic green and blue, 50/50 mix for the main body colour. Faskolor red, yellow, and black.
Mask-Hank cut tape
Inspiration-Haunted Myst's Skyline
*I painted the black trim around the windows in for more realism, and painted the black outline of the "rip", and the mask took about 45minutes to cut! And I made the wing clear for a little bit more realism.

Body: Proline Crowd Pleazer for the XXX-NT
Paint: Faspearl white, Faspearl Blue, Faspearl Charcoal, Faspearl Black, Fascent Blue, Faswhite.
Masks used: Hand Cut
This is my first attemt at painting a body. Its hard to make out in the picture, but there are Faspearl Charcoal ghost flames shadowing the Faspearl to Faswhite flames on the black. They really give it a cool and not so blah look in preson, but no matter how much i tried i couldnt get them to show in the picture. And also, i had to reduce the quality of the Digital pics in order to post, sorry about that. Thanks.

jm93: In real life it glows very brightly! I have a black light, but it is much to large to get the effect that bob got with the bug. I will have to get one of the spaz-stix kits. Look at my website for pics of another body that i was able to get better pics of.
PureTMaxx: Great body, but it lends itself more towards the Street/Race competition that will start on February 14. The way the judging works you will have a bigger advantage in that competition. Obviousy you are welcome to keep it in this competition, but I dont want to have everyone post their Street/Race masterpeices here and then lose to an elaborate paint job. If you wish to enter the Street/Race competition instead of this one, you can "withdraw" your entree from this competition and simply enter it in the Street/Race.
Spoolin: Please read above ^^^^.
The judging criteria for the Street/Race will be:
Execution
Design
Detail work (this is where spoolin and PureTmaxx will pick up the extra points later this month.)
GREAT BODIES EVERYONE!! Keep em coming!

I think it should be unlimited:) Just so the painters out there can show there range. I would like to see what the artistic skill are from one painter. Anybody should be able to come up with at least one cool design but let see some of those that have many cool designs. Yender has the advantage on us because he gets his body for FREE the power to him. Keep them coming everyone. ;) That was my .02 cents

Mine very stinky- well its okay- my 3rd basic paintjob- obviously i don't enter in concours, but i did ... i mean, about 3 months ago i did the paintjob(with cans) adn then for a big race i added the homade decals.
Body-Pro-Line RC10GT on an elec. rusty.
Paint- Faskolor pearl white and metallic blue, and the red is a piant pen.
Mask- The front flames were done with hot glue mask- all others were Hand-cut out of a sheet of carbon-fiber decals.
Inspiration- U see the 2 color can paintjob everywhere, but later i was going for the big race, saw the cabon fiber decals, got out the paint pen, and did it in about 2 hours.
Hope this works

here ya are. Entry 1.
This body is a proline ford f150 body (for a 10GT). The masking is fun part. I draw what I want, scan it and trace in the computer then have a summa cutter do all the fine work. It is painted using some custom mix pactra paints (green and lt blue ) and well inspiration comes for motorcycle tanks I like the long skinny flames they do.

Yendor is officially disqualified because the body is a bad influence to young kids. :p j/k Incredable job!!!
Integra d12: Can i have you edit your post to include the info which is specified in the original post (body, paint, mask, inspiration)? Thanks.
Funkmaster: Of course the body is allowed. I would say you should enter it in the best street for its scale look, but the paint job on it is fantastic!! The choice is yours and yours alone.
Cosmo: Great body as usual!
andy51289: I love the fade and great use of a single color (blue)!

When the actual judging commences, will each body be ranked? ie 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc. i know my body isnt podium material, but it would be cool to know how we ranked in a Best Paint Competition? thanks.

I didn't really want to post on this thread again (let my painting speek for itself) but, I think it would be rude not to answer so many questions.
Timberwolf - I'm not sure how long it took to paint because I paint a little and let it dry. I have been working on it for quite a while. There were 13 different colors and a ton of changes. I would guess upwards of 30 hours.
Luigis - The Bacardi side body color is white mixed with gold.
Mab-Man - I thought about the "Adult Theme" but wanted to paint it anyway. Heck, I put in a disclamer!
King - There are plenty of great bodies comming. Just Wait!
Audi - Yes, I pumped you guys for info on the Cuban flag and How to paint bubbles. Thanks for the info.
Kden - Thanks, That's all the same car. :D

Frank, I want to see the marbling. Try taking a pic outside in indirect light. Enough light not to use the flash, not soo much that it washes it out.

I could see it now in Body Shop: "we had a painting competition on our website and this month's winner is Bob Hastings of New Milford, CT. When Bob isn't painting bodies or running RC cars he's one of the editors of RC Car Action where he paints bodies and runs RC cars. His monthly column is called "Body Shop" and in it you'll see things like this:

Well, I looked at the one on *******, ant the one duze says is "MY" drawing. While I'm sure you both spent some time doing them, they are both obviously inspired by the HPI challenge logo.
Now before someone flips out. Yes Duze, yours was from your drawing, but your drawing was a copy of HPI's logo.
http://www.dropkicked.net/images/rcbods/hpiduze.jpg
All I did was isolate a section of hpi's logo, copy it, and flip it. When overlaid on the hand drawing it's a close enough match to say that the hand drawing was done freehand from the HPI logo.
I'm all for getting inspiration from where ever you can, BUT I am also all for giving credit where credit is do.

Im going to tackle a tough subject here and i sincerely hope that i do not anger anyone as it is not my intentions. I only wish to convey the intentions of this contest.
Teamduze painted a beautiful body which took a lot of hard work and cutting. With the info that dropkicked posted and with my own "research," it is clear that the masks were not original. However, from experience i know how hard it is to cut out such an intricate design even when a template is being used. Teamduze deserves recognition for the clean cutting, usage of the masks and quality painting.
The purpose of posting the required information (body, mask, paint, inspiration) is so other people can easily attempt to recreate the masterpieces that are submitted for judging. I agree with dropkicked that credit must be given where it is due. Judging does not take into account the originality of the design so I see no reason to not be forthright when entering this required information.
Thank you, and again i do not mean to anger anyone.
jkerr0043: Good job. The graphite looks great and i love the shadow on the sides!
excitable: Cool SS.
rcwoodtek: Great colors! (nice chunk of aluminum you have under the body too :D )
Team luigis:
1) Writting on the body is done using some form of masking (masking tape, liquid mask, vinyl sheet). Hauntedmyst's artical goes into more detail on each form of masking. Yendor used a vinyl cutter to cut all the masks and i used part of a XXX-Main mask (www.xxxmain.com)
2) Look on the xxx-main site, they have a flag mask that you can order. If you want to create it on your own, try to copy what they have done on a piece of paper and keep drawing it. After a few attempts you will get the hang of it. You can then mask off an area on the inside of the body, draw the flag on the outside of it and carefully cut it out in the masking.
3) We use masks to seperate colors, see hauntedmysts artical.
I hope the artical answered your 4th question.

TEAMDUZE: I'm saying exactly what dropkick says....give credit where credit is due. The mask on your hood is yours...the masks on the sides are unchanged. I also kinda gave credit where credit was due...I NEVER claimed that I made the mask. Like it says on ******* "came from a scaned flyer advertisement." (yeah they spelled scanned wrong)
Dropkicked: The tribal flame piece was used by HPI. As you can see the logo was for the 2002 challenge. ******* has the date of Oct. 31 2001 on the printable mask.
For anyone else who would like the mask here ya go.

I think (for fair judgement sake) .. Yendor should be reduced to the old rattle can method to possiby even the playing field for the other painter...

What do the rest of you think??
I have a tendancy to lean towards one body per contest, 2 at the most unless they do something like Yendor has done with a "team of cars". For one, I think the idea is to put your best work forward for that particular weeks contest.
I'd personally like to see only recent work, something done in the past 2 months. Otherwise, some of the great painters here could just pull out something from the past when the idea of the contest (for me anyways) is to push even the most experianced painter to produce something new and cool. For example, I haven't painted anything really cool or new in 6 months, but when the next contest rolls around, I hope to have something new to enter, something inspired to beat the greatness I've seen posted here. I don't know if I can achieve that but if nothing else, the contest will challenge me to think out of the box. One of the things that Bob does that consistantly amazes me from month to month (on top of his first rate work) is his unparalleled ability to always create something new and fresh and I think we should all take a que from that and try do the same.
To answer the question, "will all the cars be rated?", while I can't speak for the other judges, the answer for this contest is no. I simply don't have the time (unless I find myself with the time and have one of my long winded moments. which we all know can happen at any time :) ) If your car didn't make it into the top 5, just email me and I'll give you my assessment.

In regards to hauntedmysts comments;
My original thinking was to get a solid spectrum of work from a variety of painters. As more and more people are posting multiple bodies and bodies that have been posted several months ago, we are not pushing the envelope and trying to better ourselves. I absolutely hate going back on something I have said (again), but in this case it is necessary.
Entrees will be limited to two (2).
This creates a new problem. Many people have entered more than 2 bodies, which 2 of their entrees are to be judged? The first two?
I feel the best solution is as follows: each person who has entered more than one body edits their posts leaving only the two they want for judging. I will email or PM everyone who has entered more than one body. If more than 2 bodies remain at the end of the competition then only the first 2 will be judged.
I also agree with haunted that entrees should be painted within the last 2 months. For this competition we will not be to strict with this, but future competitions will be.
I sincerely appologize for the running changes, future competitions will benefit from the challenges we face in this first competition.
Yendor: no comment needs to be made, its speakes for itself.
jkerr0043: No problem :) Very nice!
StAgEmAsTeR: Great colors and patterns.
djm914-6: Beautiful airbrush work and lights.
extremetmaxxer: If you read the opening post you will notice that the March restrictions for best paint is Commercially available masks only!! . I hope to see a great entry from you.

I vote against Yendor. It only promotes alcoholism and does not capture the essence of what r/c racing is.

I disagree...to me the art is in the choice and placement of the graphics and also the color selection. Handcut or pre-cut masks factor little in them. I use a lot of precut flames masks myself. Not because I can't handcut flames, I can and pretty good ones too, but because it saves me a few hours of work.

Alcohol and tobacco companies are major sponsors of real racing. RC mimicks real racing in lots of ways. If I did a replica of the Budwieser sponsored NASCAR that was beautifully done to scale would you want to disqualify that because it promotes alcoholism? That's just ridiculous.

Well said, everybody here has the right to paint what they want. We are not judging what is painted but how well the painting is done. Keep up the great work Yendor:D

inspgadgt: Yendos body is truly amazing and i only relized a little while ago all the work that was put into the actual paint and the the little bubbles, but IMO theres a diffrence between handcut and precut masks. just like real machines, a dodge viper is hand assembled while a mustang is made by robots. do you see what im saying? but i dont want this thread to turn into anything bad i was just curious to see what other art work yendor has done.
edit: also what really impresses me about that libra body is the attention to detail and the meticulous placement of all the lettering. (mabey im just jelous that yendor has a vinyl cutter:D )

Fasescent-Yellow

rcaddikt:
I'm wondering about how you did your dryer sheet effect. Are you spraying the first color through a sheet of the stuff and backing it, or are you painting the major color first, sticking the sheet into the wet paint and pulling it up? It looks really good, I'd like to try it sometime.
rcaddikt
02-12-2003, 11:40 PM
Thanks WRX! The first one. I sprayed the blue first, through the dryer sheet and backed it with turquoise. I like the way it turned out as well, but next time I want to try to get the sheet closer to the body. The sheet has a really cool pattern to it that just didn't come through on the body because it wasn't close enough.
thanks again

To be honest, it doesn't matter to me. I don't paint to win contests. You can pick whatever you want, or not pick any at all. Basically I'm just hoping that someone will see my stuff here and send me some business. I never intended to win anything when I posted these. It's an honor just to be nominated....

I know it's not winner material, but for my second real custom job I don't think it's that bad. The Carbonfiber behind the tears don't show up well in the pictures but look decent in the direct sun.
Body : Proline 3104 Hum-V Urban (.060 Lexan is a bear to cut!)
Paints :Createx
Opaque White
Opaque Black
Transparent Red
Transparent Violet
Thansparent Pthalo Blue
C.F. Mix :Opaque Black/ Pearl Silver
Masks : Bob Dively LM and Stickerpotamus stars (don't reccomend)

I personally don't have a body that I painted to submit for the contest, however my wife (Julie) would like to enter a body, she painted.
This is her first ever RC car (Mirco RS4) and first RC car paint job. I thought she was crazy to tackle such a hard idea, but it turned out awesome!
Body- HPI Racing VW Beetle 140mm for Micro RS4
Paint- The body was hand painted with no less than 14 different colours! She used Createx and Pactra paints. Many of the colours are custom mixed.
3 greens
1 white
3 blues
1 yellow
1 red
1 orange
1 purple
1 grey
1 pink
1 black
Mask- Liquid mask was used, painted on then cut out for each colour. The design was drawn on the over spray film by hand, no transfers!
Inspiration- Austin Powers Timemachine Beetle.
Ready for the pics?

Cosmo: Any body that is posted is concidered an entree to the competition. So I can only allow any one person to post a maximum of two bodies. Thanks.
The purpose of this competition is to spread paint ideas, not to advertise. For that reason I do not want people to post numerous bodies (whatever the motivation) and force the judge to wade through them trying to figure out which ones to judge. That is unfair for the judge and unnecessarily clutters the thread.
Thanks. :)

you guys are awesome. I only hope to one day be able to paint such masterpieces as you all have. is there anywhere I can find literature on how to paint like this or is it all self taught over time?
If there are any books I can purchase on airburshing that you think would help a beginner I would appreciate it. I am in the
U.S NAVY and I am heading to the gulf in early march so I will have very limited access to these tools and am in need of getting them before I leave. Any advice would help.

Well, I've been through all the cars. All I can say is excellent work for everyone who entered and man oh man did you guys make this hard!!! I was surprized by the level of quality this soon after the announcement of the contest! Obvisously, with so many bodies being entered, I would be writing for hours if I posted every ones ratings so I went through each page and picked out what I thought was "best" and then analyzed them. Even though the points system is designed to help the contest be objective, given human nature, some subjective plays into it. I was actually surprized by my own ratings on the cars. I will limit my comments to what I really like about the entries.
The King
- Truck Body
Difficulty (score 1-10) 6
Over all design (score 1-10) 7
Execution (score 1-10) 7
Total Score 20
Comments: I really liked this body. Great use of colors and use of image.
Andy
-Stadium Truck
Difficulty (score 1-10) 7
Over all design (score 1-10) 7
Execution (score 1-10) 7
Total Score 21
Comments: Even though its not as complex as some of the others, I keep coming back to this body. I think the overall design and color choices flow really well together into a very nice body.
Yendor
- Coke & Bacardi
Difficulty (score 1-10) 9
Over all design (score 1-10) 7
Execution (score 1-10) 9
Total Score 25
Comments: Yendors technical work is just amazing. The car actually looks like it is sweating and the head & tail lights look like stickers.
DKAngel
- Killer sedan
Difficulty (score 1-10) 5
Over all design (score 1-10) 10
Execution (score 1-10) 9.5
Total Score 24.5
Comments: It's just stunning! While not as technically difficult as some of the other entries, the design just rocks me. Since I don't like giving out 10's I get looking for design faults. There just aren't any that I can see. I'll be copying this design! lol If I had to pick any one of these bodies to put on my own car, this would be it
rcaddikt
- Maxx Old Style Van
Difficulty (score 1-10) 8
Over all design (score 1-10) 8
Execution (score 1-10) 8
Total Score 24
Comments: Your a freak! Sometimes I think you were born with that airbrush in your hand and a catalog of unique designs in your head. This one is very very good. Just not as good as the next one you submitted.
Bodz
-Dragon Body
Difficulty (score 1-10) 8
Over all design (score 1-10) 8,5
Execution (score 1-10) 8
Total Score 24.5
Comments: Your the "come from out of no where" guy! I haven't seen much of your work, but this dragon blew me away. I agree with Bob, this body should inspire other people to do more creative things with buggies!
rcaddikt
-El Camino
Difficulty (score 1-10) 6
Over all design (score 1-10) 9.5
Execution (score 1-10) 9
Total Score 24.5
Comments: Just like all the rest of your work, this one is amazing, but like all your concourse winners, it just looks so complete and refined to me.
Chubby's Wife
- Austin Powers Bug
Difficulty (score 1-10) 8
Over all design (score 1-10) 7
Execution (score 1-10) 7
Total Score 22
Comments: All I can say is wow! Gentlemen, when this lady gets an airbrush and learns how to use it, we'll all be in a world of both hurt and awe. If she can do this with paint brushes on a micro her first time out, then we have much to look forward to. Hands down the best brushed body I've ever seen. She wins "The Most Impressive Debut" Award!

I hope you guys took the 'Trophy Post' in the humorous nature it was intended. I just think the idea of a 'Digital Trophy' is hysterical. -- It's like racing for 'Points.'
