Well, there are a couple of different ways the tire companies(that make foam tires) rate their compounds, by shore rating & by a color code. For shore ratings, it's pretty simple, the lower the number, the softer the tire, so the more grip it can produce. For color codes, it refers to the softness of it, but also can give you an idea of how fast that compound will wear down. for example, TRC's pink & greay compounds read out about the same in shore ratings(around 29-30, I believe), but because of how the tire compound is formulated, the pink doesn't wear as quickly or heat up as much, so it's better on abrasive surfaces like asphalt or concrete(as opposed to carpet, which is pretty easy on tires). For a more comprehensive explanation of the color codes, I'd suggest you check out Trinity's website(www.teamtrinity.com) & look up TRC's foam tires section, it explains things pretty well & also offers some basic suggestions of compounds for certain surfaces & conditions...:)

best bet is to just ask someone at your track who gets 1st in the a-main which tires they used ;). then you will most likely get the best tires for your track :D

Disregard the shore rating when buying foam tires, use the color code green, blue, purple white etc. Remember too, that one manufacturers blue will not be the same as anothers. Most guys are using JACO, BSR, TRC. The track you plan to race at is the best place to get an idea of what tire compound works. For stock racing I use Jaco Blue (4103) up front with compound applied to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch on right front, rear is usually green or white for modified the setup is blue or black front or blue lf, black rf rear is white or gray with traction compound applied to the whole tire. Other tracks may use a purple or blue from setup, with green, blue, white, gray and even black on the rear. Some may use two different compounds on the rear Green (Left rear), White or Gray on (right rear) to help car turn and exit corners.
Changes in tire compound may be needed as weather conditions inside changes car may seem to get loose in warmer weather, the traction compound that's been laid down may tend to evaporate.
