Around here dirt track is really popular, in every scale. We have several FULL SIZE tracks, and some RC tracks. A friend of mine built a dirt oval and they convert RC10s to late model style cars.
My lhs has built several sprint cars as well.
I have been impressed with the Duratrax Evader BX. I do not care for the poor traction that a 2wd has, but the car seems to be first rate!! I have a custom works Bloomquist wedge body for it. I am going to get a set of four front shocks and some stiff springs. Tires and wheels. Then give it a go.
I wanted a buggy so if the dirt track thing works out they are cheap enough I will just buy another one and have a few spare parts for it.
It will take me a while to get the body going, but I will let you know how it goes.

hey guys,
just the thread i was looking for. i'm racing an RC10T on a short dirt oval track with the factory works oval shock towers and short associated shocks. i was wondering if you have any general set up advice for me. i'm thinking of making a carbon fiber LTO chassis for it. when you set up one of these, do you try to get it to be able to oversteer or push a little? right now it pushes and i feel like i could square the turns a little more (with more steering and get a straighter run down the straights...any input would be great. thanks,
adam

I'm just starting to tinker with my buggy, but I would think you would want a lot of oversteer. After all we are dirt tracking these things right. Like you said Adam it should help square the corners and make the straights a little longer.

hi guys!
wow, nice place we got here.
I have never run the gas stuck, but stering is a big part of things. when I was running a B# converted to an outlaw sprint, I used limiters in all 4 shocks, but to gain lots of steering, I used #1 pistons up front with 25 wt. (after lots of experimenting for a whole day), and #2's in the back with 45 wt. oil..(all trinity)
I would then adjust spring preload for track conditions, or swap springs as necasarry. for starting point on spring I used.
LF; blue,or gold
RF:silver, or green
LR: blue, or gold
RR: red, or, (seldom) gold.
Also once you build all 4 shocks with the limiters, taking care to build the same length shocks, to the same ammount of limmit.
I then removed the stock A/E shock end, of the left rear shock and replaced it with a rockett city tie rod end, cut to be 1/4 " longer than the ae shock end. This keeps the left rear and right front wheels staticly. "loaded" and alows the weight to transfer to the right rear in the turns when you adjsut properly.
on a clay indoor track, running cooper foams, I would turn the wheel, lift for a split second, then full hammer down the straight, useing 8x2's to 11x3 P94's and finnished 2nd in thwe winter points to a custom works enforcer 10, by a 14 point spread.
and my car hand lots of custom buit alluminum parts for strength, and riggidity, and weighted over 6 pounds.
In dirt oval, weight can be your friend.

oHH, TO EXPLAIN HOW THE POINT SPREAD IS RELAVANT HERE, AT THIS PARTICULAR track, points were awarded by finnishing position in 2 point increments. IE. 50 points for winning A main, 48 for a main 2nd, 46 for A main 3rd...ETC.
We also did bump ups, win B main, and your car number 5 or 6 in the A main, but you sacrifice the B main points upon the start of the A main.
So thought kinda un fair, in my opinion, they guy whole pulls it outta the fire, to come back to the top, gets nothing more than braging rights, over the guy who TQd.
which got nothing extra either.
A bad day cost you dearly in points.

for your steering it would be more what you are comfortable with as a driver. i personally like a little push in mine as it causes me to let off some when entering a turn to make the transistion smoother through the turn for me.
as for dirt tracking around the corner and throwing it sideways .. if you take the car through the corner smoother you will increase your speed down the straight away as you have less will spin in the turn and coming out of it . i wouldnt suggest squaring off the corners as it would slow you down more than you think . if you could take the corner with a nice smooth curve with a little bit of throttle in it without spinning out you would see a quicker lap time than squaring off the track . might sound weird but i almost do a oblong oval when i race on the oval tracks. i have a tendency to let the car drift high down the straight and start to turn in as i enter the turn and let it roll through the turn more and then get back on the throttle with a drift to the high side again and repeat the same process in the next turn. by keeping it smooth for a turn you will see faster laps and you wont scrub off as much speed when going into and exiting the turns.
Oval used to be so popular, what happened? Gas oval was the most fun I ever raced, and made the most sense: big speed, easy to maintain track, its a shame.

I have been racing R/C for about 15 years. I started racing a Blackfoot on a carpeted offroad track. Then things got better when AE released the RC10T. I have raced dirt off-road, I raced at a very fast banked carpeted oval (with an Associated pan car), and I've even raced an oval that was set-up in a roller-skating rink.
About a year ago some friends and I built a new dirt oval here in Northeast Iowa. We found an old hog shed that we cleaned out and hauled in 6 loads of clay to build a banked dirt oval. We have plenty of pit space and have found many more people to join us and have fun together. We started racing in Feb. of this year and raced through April. In that time we went from 12 racers to roughly 35. We purchased a AMB system this summer and will be starting racing in November.
To make things easy for getting people into R/C we just raced 1/10 scale electric trucks when we started up. We have a beginner class along with stock and modified. This year we are going ot add another class using 2wd buggies set-up with off-road suspension and dirt late model or dirt modified bodies. We are hoping that this will generate some more interest from people that enjoy the full-scale oval racing that goes on around here in the summer.
I race a T3 with the Factory Works towers and oval body. I currently hold the track record in both stock and mod classes, 52 laps in stock and 54 laps in mod (4 minute races). I built a new truck for this year, it's a Kranzel's Terminator chassis with the Novak brushless motor system. I've had my new truck on the track once, but I have adjustments to make to it to get it dialed in right.

Hey Tim; I don't know what the competition is like at Wiley's, but if you are near York, then you are near Newville (exit 37 off 81) . They have unbeleivable racin from april till oct. Ive got a xxxnt and a nitro sprinter and I'm putting together a dirt modified too. I travel 3 1/2 hrs one way to race there because they are the best that I've seen.

Hey oval4ever; What can you tell me about Cooper foams? I'm puttin together a 2 wd nitro tc3 to run as a EDM against some tough guys in Pa. and if I got good enough, I was going to go to the Cooper's race next Nov. From what I have heard, it's better if you break the foams in before you really race'em. Have you ever heard that one? In Pa. most of the guys just run the custom works tires except for the dirtoval.com nitro tour. A couple of those tracks we could run foams on and I was thinkin the Cooper's might be good there too. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Jim
