View Full Version : Best Paint Competition #2 (March)
mab_man20
03-01-2003, 01:27 AM
Welcome everyone to the Second Best Paint Competition!!
The best paint competition will be open for entrees for two weeks and will close at 12:00 AM March 14.
Restrictions: Must use a commercially available mask. (You may use other forms of masking in ADDITION to the commercial mask. Please don’t use a microscopic section of a commercial mask and then hand cut everything else, you are defeating the purpose.)
In the following two weeks (March 14- March 28) we will hold the Second Street/Race Competition.
Each month we will hold a Best Paint and Street/Race competition. If you can’t get your bodies done this month, don’t worry there will be plenty more to come!!
The winning bodies may appear in Radio Control Car Action or R/C Nitro!!
RULES for Best Paint:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters are welcome!)
5) Please refrain from insulting bodies in anyway.
6) Must fall within this month's restrictions (March restrictions: Must use a commercially available mask).
7) Only 2 entrees per person. 8) Bodies should be painted within the last 4 months.
Each submission must include the following:
Body manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Where did you get the mask (online, LHS, etc.)
Inspiration (could be another paint job).
And of course, a body.
This month Yendor will be judging the Best paint competition.
Each body will be judged by the following criteria (1-bad, 10-excellent):
Difficulty (score 1-10)
Over all design (score 1-10)
Execution (score 1-10)
The photo and background will not be judged. All that is needed is a clean photo that clearly shows the body.
Each month we will place some restriction on all entrees.
April restrictions:
Best Paint- Cans only.
Street/Race- Must be a copy of a movie car.
GOOD LUCK

Here is my example:
(It was painted more than 4 months ago, so it is not an official entree.)
Body: HPI Monte Carlo 190mm
Paint: Fascolor pearl red, red, white, blue, pearl charcoal.
Mask: XXX-main flag mask. Hand cut chevy logos on side flags. Liquid Mask used for the scallops.
I got the masks via www.xxxmain.com
Inspiration: I needed to use this mask. (along with a few votes from others, it inspired this months restrictions)

Does using a printed out mask from ******* or somehwere similar count?

I think the origin of the mask (where they got it either online or LHS) should also be made available to the judge.....
Just triing to help :)

Stalker911: very good point. Lets keep it limited to stuff you dont have to trace and cut out yourself.
BIGDADDYV: Another good point. Yes lets have people post where they got the actual mask.

I plan on being a fair but activist judge. If I don't have all of the information I need to make an assesment, I may have some questions.
If anyone has a problem with an entry, make it known early so a determination can be made before the judging has been completed.
And Please, try your best to grow another layer of skin. This is just for fun. Oh, and a digital trophy. I'm still trying to line up another trophy girl that I like as much as Anna. :)
My take on "commmercially available mask" is something you buy in a plastic bag from your local hobby shop. Parma, xxx main, etc.

Here's my entry. I race at Speedworld Raceway with Yendor coincidentally enought (hint-hint Yendor, can you say "winner"). This is a 12th scale parma body, with pactra white rattlecan (yes that's right you CAN do a great paint job rattelcanning!), and a hand painted expo-dry erase marker red body stripe.. I used Revlon #4 eye mask for the headlights (it came in a plastic bag so I believe it qualifies) purchased at the Longs accross the street from Speedworld Raceway. My inspiration was all the other white cars running at our track. Oh and incidentally this is my flagship body launching me into the "paint for hire" arena, I will be painting under the pen name "Bendor".

harshguy: Nice body (to beat yendor with), but im confused. Did you use some form of eye makeup for the headlights??
 :)
Stalker911
03-02-2003, 11:14 PM
Dang.... well looks like I am out of this contest... I'm doing my Veteq body with a mask I d/led. Well, it should fit into some contest with in a few months :D
Hey, I have an idea for a contest... how about 1 for guys who are not pros and have done 10 or less bodys?! Sorry if this isn't the right spot for that comment, but I just thought of it :D
harshguy
03-02-2003, 11:39 PM
Yea. I 'm thinking that it's totally on par with Yendor bodies ;) (I should know I've owned about a dozen on them). Yea the rules said it had to be commercially available mask, so I used revlon eye mask(ara) for the headlights. I guess if that was a misinterpretaion of the rules I can enter it in next months rattle-can class.

Harshguy; I'm surprised how well you do passing those 20's you print on your inkjet. Any ATF guy worth his salt could fiqure this body aint legit. :D Please substitute the word "Winner" with "DSQ" :p

http://www.arroyoc.net/whinners.gif --- why is it sounding like you guys are gonna tank my entry! I'm contacting my attorney today, so he's "waiting in the wings".
Yendor, actually I (unlike you mass productino guys) hand sign each one of my bodies, so although it isn't going to look "cookie cutter" it will add more value to anyone purchasing my bodies - LOL!!!
Oh hey, BTW I know it's off topic, but I'm posting links wvery chance I get to my "new and improved" gear ratio calculator:

Not many entrees so far. :( I know everyone is hard at work on one and will enter it in the last few days!! All you newer painters this is your chance to get a win! :)
harshguy: While you used a "mask," it is not the put it down, paint, peal it up, and paint again form of mask. It is also encouraged that people try to use the commercial mask as the focus, and not as a tiny little detail somewhere on the back fendor. Im afraid it doesnt quite make it as a "commercially available masked body." It would make a great entry for the "cans only" contest though. :)

I guess no one likes painting with commercial masks :( :(
Shawnhpi: What commercial mask did you use?
thanks
TonyBoyQ
03-04-2003, 08:53 PM
Body: Toyota IS200 Altezza 190mm
Paints: Pactra RC Finish Justice Black and Blue streak Aerosol Cans, Duplicolor Mirage Blue/Red Chameleon Aerosol can.
Masking: Parma "Splash" masking bought at Hobby Central in Poway California.
Inspiration: I saw a marble style paint job done at the recent Hot Import Nights car show in Del Mar, where they had a Lexus IS300, w/ the same paint scheme except it was in red, and had a wild looking carbon fibre wing/ carbon fibre hood.
I saw a comercial on RCCA a few issues back, where duplicolor had a chameleon T-Maxx. I tried it out, and it turned out great, although you can't see the blue/purple/red/orange color shifting on the picture. The paint scheme was done w/ a rolled up plastic bag being sprayed, and dabbed all over the body. Having to make the picture smaller made the detail really bad. The color in real life is much darker, and shows the color shifting in the glares. Not bad for just using air cans, and for it being my first multi-tone paint job. Go easy, and hope you likez

shawnhpi: It sounded like you had been selling them, just not that many. I hate to do this (THERE WONT BE ANY ENTREES!!!!! :( :( :( ) but Im going to have to say "commercially available means that i could go onto a website or into an LHS and buy one that has been packaged in plastic and has a part number.
Bodywerx: Great looking bodies, but unfortunately they also fall under the explanation that i gave to Shawn.
SegaBowMan: Each month we have two competitions, a best paint, and a Street/Race. Next month all the entrees to the best paint must be done with a can, all the entrees to the street/race must be muscle cars (whatever a muscle car is to you).
TonyBoyQ: The body is great, but it doesnt use a commercially available mask. sorry.

Hey mab_man
I DO use a commercially available masking! If you look closely, I used the PARMA "Splash Style" masking on the middle, and both sides. The only thing I did, was reverse the colors. Instead of a blue backing w/ black blotches, inside the mask was black backing w/ blue blotches. Please look at the body carefully, you'll notice the arrow running down the middle, and both sides has the splash mark on it too. It's parma's masking. I couldn't in my wildest imagination have done a mask like that by meself=P.. heheh.. sorry if it doesn't show that much, but it really is there=).. thanks!

Okay, First time entering a competition, so be nice.
Body is a Proline Dodge Ram
Pactra paints: candy red backed in Indy Silver, with Indy Silver flames.
I used the XXX-Main tribal flames mask on the front with a handcut tear on the back (so the wing would be silver).
Anyway, I had it on my T3 for about 10 minutes when my Father decided he had to have it. Got $$ for it, so not too sad.
What do you think?

moddedsnrally: Great integra!! but all entrees to this competition must use a commercially available mask. If you used cans you can enter it in the Street/Race competition that starts March 14th.
GR8Scott: Exellent use of the masks and the shadow really brings it out!! Can we get a pic of the hood? Great job!

Okay, the last post was painless (nobody laughed at me yet).
So, here is the body I painted to replace the Dodge.
Proline GMC Sierra
MASK: XXX-Main Skulls
Paint: Faskolor: stripe is fluorescent violet, skulls are fluorescent green trimmed in fasorange. Body is Pearl White backed with the violet(turned out like a purple chrome:D)
shadows and windows treated with fastint.
It rides on my T3. What do you think about this one?

1st time I used a commercial mask - about a year ago. It's more than the comps' "time frame" rule and probably be disqualified... anyway, just waned to show it off and inspire some peeps :D
Body: HPI Saleen Mustang
Paints: Pactra Grape Pearl backed with True Blu Pearl backed with Indy Silver then Fluorescent Yellow with hints of Fluorescent Green then sprayed the main body color with Indy Silver.
Masking: XXX Main Team Flames
Inspiration: Saw the flames on the front cover of a R/C mag (forgot w/c one)

Great job everyone!!
acidburn: Thanks for posting anyway. It is a perfect example of what is possible using a store bought mask.

I just got home after a double shift at the rice mill. It's 11:15 PM Pacific and I'm very tired. If you folks wouldn't mind, I would like to post the results of this competition by, say, 10:00 AM tomorrow. I have a great trophy, but the trophy girl seems to be a problem. I'll take a final look at all the entries and try to do a good job at the judging. I know how important a digital trophy can be. :D Good luck to all and wish me a good night's sleep. :o

Good Morning Everyone!
For a number of reasons not all the bodies posted qualify for this months competition. But, I think everyone would like to know I looked at their work. This is what I wrote down.
Mab-Man's example - Too old to qualify, but exactly what the competition was hoped to inspire. Beautilful work.
Shawnhpi's Mercedes- nice grill work, wing should be painted.
Shawnhpi's BMWW - Upside down sticker is novel.
Bodyworks's wife's Acura- These are a couple of great looking bodies. I like the pink one best.
Moddedsnrally's Acrua- A beautiful car, but stickers are not a mask. You might try painting the carbon fiber next time.
Trav.99's Stampede- The hand painted ram shows alot of effort and tribal stripes from the auto parts store is a great idea. I don't see any yellow highlights.
Acidburn's Mustang. The saleen is a great body. Front detail outstanding. I think this body would look even better if the colors were reversed.
Harshguy's 12 - I love white and that orange stripe on the side is to die for. The Bendor logo is a total ripoff. The use of commercial mask(era) is over the top. I haven't been returning any calls from your attorney.
Now to the actual judging:
The numbers are for difficulty, overall design, and execution.
vvvLoKiuv's 300 M - (5-5-8) Simple flame job. If you're going to put a big 300 sticker on the hood if would look much better if you worked the flames around the sticker.
GR8Scott's Ram Truck - (5-5-8) Simple but nice. Wash Me!
Stalker 911's Eclipse - (5-6-8) It's a little hard to see from the photo but the overall quality is quite good. I like the chrome.
Double A's CLK - (5-6-8) Easy flames but a great job for cans.
GR8Scott's GMC Sierra - (6-6-8) This thing is pretty hedious, but it actually works! Execution is good . The black fades could be darker and I'd like to see more detail on the rollbars.
TonyBoyQ's Toyota - (7-5-8) Great work on the texture gets points for difficulty. But, it's too much for the whole car. I don't see the parma splash masking as there is not enough contrast. Paint the wing and cut the stacks.
--AND The Winner is:
T3GT's Crowd Pelaser - (7-7-8) Overall I liked this car the best. The reverse flames were creative and came up with a drip look. It's a little disjointed where the masking meets the grill but still looks fine. I liked the nicely radiused wheelwells and the black window frames. Great Job! I hope you enjoy your trophy and of course, the trophy girl. :D
GR8Scott
03-15-2003, 01:55 PM
Yendor,
Thanks for putting the effort into the judging, I liked the negatives better than my own entry as well.
Anway, I really admire your work, and I am interested in more feedback. If you have the time and inclination, would you email me with some more detail on your advice? scott-n-shannon@comcast.net
i.e. why you thought darker shadows are better and what detail on the rollbars makes the difference?
I made conscious decisions on both points and you obviously have different views. Let me have them. Also, what are the little details that I am overlooking that might make my jobs appear more...professional or finished?
You only get better through practice and unbiased feedback.
As for the "hideous" comment, that was really my point. I wanted a shiny new body that my buddies would not want to buy. I went for the whole "Toxic Avenger" (grn/orange) thing.:)
THANKS!
Scott
Thanks Yendor, Mab_Man20, HauntedMyst, and the rest of the crew here.......as expected, You know I LOVE the Trophy and Trophy Girl:D ......lol.........That grill work was passed over only because I was in a HURRY painting this body so I could race the next day...I didn't even think it would win because they have some really nice bodies on this thread.....but since it qualified with your rules and guidelines, I went for it:p ......
I'll be checking out your future threads to see what other bodies I can enter........
Thanks again guys!!!!!!
