why use bellcranks? wouldn't direct steering (like on a stampede) offer (very) slightly quicker responces, weight savings and less friction? then why are bell cranks better?

The bellcranks are the servo savers. They're much better than the other style on smaller cars.

Well there are servo-savers on some bellcranks, but some don't have them. What bellcranks can do is give better geometry for the steering linkage. The longer rods used on vehicles like the Stampede or HPI Rush are not ideal setups because they transmit too much stress to the servo, and can lead to problems like excessive bump-steer, or the alignment of the wheel changing during suspension travel. Bellcranks can also enhance a servo's power or speed.
Except for on-road pan-cars or short-travel touring cars, bellcranks are preferable to direct-steer cars.
