View Full Version : Radio question for Piccolo

Do you have to have a heli specific radio for the Piccolo? Can I use my regular 4 channel (Hitec Flash 4) for this heli? The GWS radio that comes with the Smartech is just a regular 4 channel, not one designed for heli's.

Get the best radio when it comes to fly a heli. I am using Hetic eclipse for my Humming Bird, and Pico (inbox still) as well, as my Corona (inbox). Programmable radio gives you the best control and authority in controling your heli.

But that doesn't really answer my question. My Flash 4 is a computer radio, but it is not a specific heli radio. My question is can I use this radio with the fixed pitch of the Piccolo? From what I can tell, the picoboard seem to do the mixing (if any are required with the fixed pitch) for me. It seems that the GWS radio's that I see for sale with the Piccolo's is just a regular radio, not even a computer radio...

Your not getting my point. "Get the best radio when it come to flying a Heli" Better safe than sorry;) You can make it fly with your radio.
***but it is not a specific heli radio***
Do you use your shaver to brush your teeth?
--Safety first. The heli will fly fine with your tx, but.. There is a but............. So once again. Safety first;)

Hello Antonio,
Somehow I believe you are missing the gent's point. The Flash 4 is a quality radio, made to the same standards as your Eclipse or my Prizm. From what I have read, the Piccolo does not need a more advanced radio, the difference would be moving to a more advanced heli, where the extra functions are required. As I understand it, the GWS transmitter does not have the same fine resolution as we are getting from the Hitech line. The GWS tranny is probably fine for the slow foam park fliers, but the Heli does require a very smooth signal with fine resolution.
Mr. Lin, you can correct me if I am mistaken.

So from what I have read and what everyone has kindly supplied above, if I am only going to do a fixed collective heli (for now) the radio that I have, the FLash 4, will work. It's not until I get into the collective pitch that I will need the heli radio with its internal mixing options...? Am I right?

Trikster: I'm not sure why some of these folks don't want to give you a straight answer to your straight question. Maybe they just don't know for sure, but to answer your orginal question. Yes you can use a common 4 channel airplane radio with the Pic. With the Picoboard mixer it will work for you. No it's not the ultimate radio for heli's but that's not what you asked. I originally started out flying my ECO8 with mechanical mixer using a Hitec Focus4 Tx and it worked fine for simple hovering and basic manuvering. I'm using a Futaba Conquest 6 with it now and it still flys just fine. When the time comes that I move into 3D flight I will need and get a CCPM radio but for now I don't really need it. You won't either for a while.

Hi Pinky,
I don't know you from Adam, but you have a bit of a sharp edge to some of the answers. As far as answering the question, check back where I responded to the suitability of a Flash 4 for the Pic.
Best regards, Dave

Thanks for all of your replies. I don't plan on doing any 3D stuff for a long time yet and I do not know if the Piccolo is really suited for that type of flight. I know it can do it, I have seen footage of it landing on ceilings and such, but I do not think I will ever get that much into it. I want something to buzz around my house when its raining and to fly in my parking lot when its nice and I don't feel like driving for 30 minutes to fly.

Hi Trick,
The Pico is a good trainer, I haven't really put mine together yet, I also have the Corona, and I am converting a Century Hawk to E. Soon, I will put mine together and share my opinion on Heli's. ..
Something about Heli guys, that I don't understand. It seems as though once they tasted the thrill of heli and witness the awesome display of an airplane. They change flavor. Funny because, I traded my Coca Cola Python for his Pico.
Hey! Pinky, Let me know if your really deep into Heli's. for soon, I have some tricks in my sleeves, that can make a Joker Heli, look like a pinky, compared to my soon to be helicopter conversion;)

Sorry you feel that way. As far as I recall I didn't mention you. If you check my "registered" date you may note I've been here a very long time. I just don't post unless I have something to say. I do, just find it odd how some will dance around a question without really answering it. I see remarks often like,
"which is better, a Lynx 3D or an XR3i?" answer "buy an M8 they're the bomb!"
"what hopups should I buy for my XXXnt?" answer "buy a FTGT, they're the bomb!"
Trikster asked a specific question. I assumed he had some electronics from airplane stuff and was hoping to use it with his heli and save some cash starting out.
Well you get the idea. If this forum is thin skinned I apologize and will go back to the ECO forums. Just trying to help.
genovia, I've been into fuel and electric airplanes for quite a while and continue to fly them whenever I can. I also race offroad gas/electric trucks and buggys 10th and 8th scale. As well as some onroad parking lot racing on occassion. All of them are my favorites, I just wish I had more time. I recently got into electric heli's and am enjoying it as well. I don't see myself getting out of airplanes anytime soon.

Trikster, if you would like some links to Ikarus, Piccolo and ECO specific forums and couple online stores where you can get stock parts and hopus for a very good price PM me or e-mail me.

I also hate the dance... wastes time for everyone. I appreciate your cander in your remarks. I would rather have it straight then sugar coated (90% of the time anyway). shoot me an email with what ya got... trikster_online@hotmail.com Perhaps one day genovia will make a donation to the Trikster in the Sky fund and add another plane to my fleet (I have one, he has like 600 or so, doesn't seem fair).

Trik,
I survive in this hobby by building, I made a good impression in the fields, that I fly and in Ezone. No, I don't have 600 airplanes, roughly, I built 40 planes for others, and I have 32 of my own, some are built and others are still in the box..

In the real world, I teach Martial arts. I am proud of this achievement. I teach kickboxing and I am a loyal disciple of the Filipino and Hawaiian martial arts.
There is one thing about Novice. One simple experience and they think they know it all.
Don't you hate that?

genova, I take it you also like both heli's an airplanes? Heli's are great and you can do some really interesting stuff with them but so too with airplanes. They each do things the other can't so I find much pleasure in both. I find it very relaxing when soaring a 2 meter glider yet there's a lot of rush when doing a low level wide open knife edge pass with a P-38. Of coarse you can't hover, side slip or fly backwards very far with airplanes like a heli can. I'm looking forward to early retirement so I can spend more time RCing.
Very impressive martial arts resume. Not sure what that has to do with RC? But still, very impressive. No, I don't think RC is "real world". It's just a hobby to take my mind off the real world at the end of the week.
No I don't hate novice's in any form. They are the new blood to the industry. I've been a novice many times at many things. There's always a leaning curve to each new endevor. I try not to force feed any information into a newbie. It usually only tends to frustrate them and make them resistive to input. I tend to answer their questions as directly as possable. Then if or when it goes badly and they ask why I offer suggestions. We all learn from trial and error.

Trick, Pinky...
I got a good trade from a local flyer. My Crazy planes, the 8 and Max, both traded for a Fun Piccolo.
But I have a problem assigning the proper channels. *Rudder, elev. etc.............. The Heli. did not come with a manual, so I am left in the dark. Right now, I'm experimenting with HS555, this will not be the rx. that I'm going to be using, but I just want to see if I can set it up.
So guys, how do I assign the channels? Need help.
Thanks,
genovia

Wont know for sure until Wednesday, but I think it is as follows:
Channel 1 - Aileron.
Channel 2 - Elevator.
Channel 3 - Throttle.
Channel 4 - Rudder.
That is for Futaba. What kind of radio do you have?
Also, the 555 receiver is too big for the Piccolo (heavy), either go with one of the GWS units or better yet the Berg 4/5/Stamp. I plan on going with the Stamp for my Pic.

Channel 1 is L/R cyclic
Channel 2 is B/F cyclic
Channel 3 is the "bottom" lead from the Piccoboard
Channel 4 is the "top" lead
I now got it.... I hope to learn flying this thing in a month, inside the house. I have the Corona coming in the mail Thursday:D
Trick,
My final setup with my Pic. will be:
Berg or FMA
Kokams, the HC 1400Lipo is kinda heavy.
I am using Eclipse 7 radio. I wanna get the Futuba 9C. Do you have a Futuba? If not, get the 9C:)
Thanks,
genovia

The Piccolo is my first heli. I have a good plane radio that I will be using for the general flight of the Pic. If I like flying the heli and want to go to the next level, then I will get myself a heli radio. I have a large room in my apartment to fly in, 14 ft by 26 ft, as well as a freshly paved and lighted tennis court that I can use. I am also thinking of going with the Kokams. I have some NiCd and NiHM's that I think will work, but be way to heavy in the long run. The specs on the Kokams are making me think that they will go well with my park flyers also.
