We don't have any details about this new Montero Mini-Z other than what you see here. This is clearly a Mini-Z designed with greater suspension travel and larger wheels and tires to accommodate the popular Montero that competes in the demanding Paris-Dakkar rally. There is no information as to if or when this will be available in the States or elsewhere, but as soon as well have more information, we'll post it here.

It is a step in the right direction, I agree. Now maybe they'll get some aftermarket parts for longer suspension, tires, etc.etc. Then I'll really be happy

thats awesome , about tiem is right , but the only problem with mini z's are that they are 2 wheel drive and that it wont have that much off road compatibility

anyways , wonder how much the street price is gonna be?

Here's what little more I've learned about this new Mini-Z:

It's called the Mini-Z Overland, and the Kyosho part number is 30261HM. Apparently, a Tom's Toyoya Racing Supra and both versions of the Goodwrench Corvette C5-R will be available on the conventional on-road Mini-Z platform as new models as well.

ABOUT TIME, I say :)

Finally, a reason to buy the Mini Z. :)
The question is: will it be able to handle some light dirt? the chassis doesn't look all that well protected.

By looking at it, I thought it was 4 wheel drive.

I contacted this guy at kyosho & heres what he said..

Hello,

Thank you for your recent e-mail. I have looked at the link, and we are not
familiar with the car. We are the Kyosho guys, but only the US Kyosho guys, and
we are simply their US distributor/service center. We don't always get the info
first, nor do we even get all of the Kyosho products produced.

I did some further asking and found that hong kong will have them mid october:D

I don't think rally racing or moster trucking Mini-Zs are all they're cracked up to be.

Here's what I think:
Mini-Zs were ment to give action like a video game with completely outragious, out of proportune accelleration and turning speed.

Putting a little tiny car in real-world off-road terrain is just not fun. I converted my Z to a rally car and tore the grass off a section of my backyard and "steam-rolled" the dirt with a shovel.
While my Z may not have all those nifty suspension components, the first thing that came into my mind was: (pleading voice) "I want my old Mini-Z back!!!".

It would give traction, but purposeful drifting was just out of the question. And don't even bother making a jump. Mine was 6" high and air time was maybe a millisecond and a thud at the end with the nose barried in the ground.

What we really like about watching rally racing is the finesse of the driving. It's the coolest type of racing ever!

The whole idea seems proposterous!
DUR!

killer_d76
10-03-2002, 12:11 AM
:ö: think about this, try running a 1/10 scale on the rough road real rally cars run onto, and you'll end up the same result as what had happened to you mini-z right?!, that's the reason why there is a 1/10 off-road track, to accomodate 1/10 scales, i suggest you get a big sand box, fill it up with mud or clay, wait 'till it hardens, i mean really hard, hard enough that a 1/24 size wheel don't sink into it, now you have a 1/24 off-road track! :D, i've also converted my mini-z to go off-road (i'm a big WRC fan too!) but lots of problem arises when running it off-road.. ground clearance, wheel spin, not enough traction, servo gears breakage, being 2WD is one of the problem too!, that's the reason why i've come to this mini-monster truck project convertion, and i am very much satisfied with it's performance specially after i've installed that modified gears, this thing fly!! and i find no problem even running on the softest track i've encountered, like fine sand, this things really rocks!!! -æ

SteveK

Sorry guys, that does not look like it is 4WD. The front steering knuckles and front end assembly are just too small for there to be some dogbones and drive axles up there.

Basically, that is a regular Mini-Z with a limited 4-link rear end and a seemingly similar mod to the front end. The steering servo assembly has been moved to the front axle, in between the wheels, and the rear direct-drive unit has been replaced with an internal gear reduction setup.

It will be good for slow-speed, scale off-roading, but it won't be good over bumps at speed, or for large jumps (Idiots will want to do stuff a 1/10th scale car can't do with them, when a jump less than an inch high would be more appropriate).

SteveH
10-04-2002, 06:47 AM

i don't mean to be rude, but i am not happy with this, i made the world's first rally z about a year ago. i would have been happy to sell my idea, but the fact this this is a rippoff of my idea is what makes me angry.

minion, i think im failing to see how anybody doing a project is a "rip off", lots of people make mods or alterations to there cars, and calling them a rip off because somebody may have had the same idea is insane.

Stelli
10-13-2002, 02:44 AM
That off road mini Z totally looks 4wd. You can see the small center drive shft going into the front gearbox. I think its 4wd.

JB_The_Evader
10-13-2002, 10:49 PM
Minion, did you talk to kyosho regarding your desing? If they never new about your home-brewed car, how can it be a rip off? They were basing the desing on their own work, not somebody else's

minion
10-14-2002, 11:25 AM
one of the things about when a company makes a new car, is checking to see if its already been done before so they can call it "original"
they obviosly didn;t check.

GTX
10-14-2002, 02:42 PM
Dude, that's pretty awesome...

But someone should just take a cheaper Tamiya kit and make it a crawler, like I plan to do. I want to get a cheap hummer and do it. Make longer arms or something or take some B3 arms and do it...

RCBuddha
10-14-2002, 08:32 PM
Minion,

I agree with Possumbot, I fail to see how they ripped you off. Your chassis (from what little I can see) looks nothing like Kyosho's design. I mean, its not like you had a patent on your car design. You bascially used Kyosho's platform to build your rally. Shouldn't you be paying them for ripping on "their" Mini-Z design?

Buddha

All I want to know is where did the wheels come from and what kind of mods did u have to do to get them to fit i would like to do the same to my mini

SteveH
10-15-2002, 06:33 AM
If you didn't patent your car, then they didn't rip you off. Everybody has a good idea once in awhile. They just had the knowledge and resources to take it farther is all.
As they say "You snooze, you loose!" If you had any serious thought of marketing you're idea you sure as heck shouldn't have showed it off on another forum before you had some sort of exclusive rights to it.

minion
10-15-2002, 05:50 PM
accually i WAS going to sell 15 rally z conversion kits this christmas. everything was gonna come with it(exept for a miniz and body of course). all you would have to do is modify a body to fit the oversized rear wheels.

this conversation is going nowhere and will probably lead to more arguing(which i don't want) so, i'm gonna just stop posting about this now, cya

Guys, I know many of you think its 4wd, i thought it was too. But if you look at the two latest issues of RCWorld, they have advertisements and an article on the Overland. Its 2wd. Regardless of that fact, i'm still going to get one.....

Buddha

rocketguy
10-20-2002, 07:32 PM
come on guys, dont kid yourselves, or course it's 4wd, it is way obivous because of the large differential houseing in the front, it it was 2wd, it would be identical to the standard mini z except lower on the chassis

Hi,

First time on this thread. I wanted to see if anybody had more info than I did but I guess not since this product is not released yet. I live in tokyo and went to a huge model/radio control show in Chiba near Tokyo yesterday. I know about the mini z`s because almost everyone in the office has one. So Kyosho set up a track to demostrate the new cars, I think 3 in total. They had a ramp about 8 or 9 inches tall and that thing was flying. It landed perfectly each time clearing about 2 1/2 feet or so. They had these fake mountains standing about 1 foot high and these trucks were driving over them as if they weren`t even there. They also drove it on an oval course at high speeds, almost the same as the cars with some noticable body roll but not enough to tip it. They didn`t let anyone touch them so I couldn`t see what was under the body. I am pretty sure that there were some modified parts in there cause the stock version couldn`t be that good. Anyway they told me Dec. for the release and that might be just Japan. Late:)

xiddiox
10-21-2002, 08:51 AM

For the last time these are only 2WD!!!!!!! Trust me, they are only rear wheel drive.

They have been for sale in Hong Kong for weeks and hundreds have already been bought and shipped to the USA.

In fact people on this site are already hopping theirs up.

www.minizracer.com The leader in Mini Z information. Go to the forums section, and then look up the Overlander section.

No rumors or speculation like this thread, just facts from the people that have them already. You can also order them from this site.

no its not
i have talked to a few people that have tried them and they r not 4WD
as for the wheel looking hexed all the wheels r the same front and rear like the mini-z so u can rotate the tires just take out the bushings or bearing and they are all the same

I THINK Mason was joking.

At least I HOPE he was joking about thinking it is 4WD.

If he wasn't then he's retarded. How many times do you have to PROVE to people this is only 2WD?

Actually I hope the people that think it's 4WD and refuse to listen to people who know buy tons of them from Tower Hobbies when they sell them. Then when they find out it's only 2WD and send it back Tower will have dozens on sale in the Scratch and Dent section for me to scoop up dirt cheap.

Guys-

Will all Mini-Z hopups/batteries fit the Overland? I really don't want to go through a million AAA batteries. PLEASE HELP!

Ben

the overland runs on:

4x AAA for the car

8x AA for the controller;)

Yes, I know the Overlands run on AAA batteries. I was asking if there are any "battery packs" that can be used in the Overlands as opposed to loose AAA alkaline batteries. I also wanted to know if any Mini-Z hopups would fit the Overland. Thanks.

Ben

I dont think they have any other batteries for them besides the "loose" ones and about the hop ups...I would think that only some might work (if not than none) because of the change in the wheel base and the chassis design.

:(

ohh yah. the one thing that would definitly work would be the motor upgrades (for example, X-speed motor). there may be more but im not sure.

Rechargeable AAAs run 9.99 for four and the Overland will run for about 45 minutes on a set.

So unless you use alkalines (which give slower speeds and poor acceleration due to their low amp delivery) you won't use a lot of batteries.

this mini-z is gonna suck. the only place yopu will posibly be able to run is on carpet and maybe cement. which, if you want to do that just get a micro rs4 they can go on cement and carpet. and they are 100 dollars.

hpiguy
01-12-2003, 05:04 AM
Thank you for the completely useless post enemy-spike.

BTW this truck can run anywhere with it's sealed drivetrain. Dirt, shallow mud, rough tracks, jumps, etc.

Your precious HPI Micro is only 100 bucks for the kit. THEN you need a radio, micro ESC, micro batteries, charger, servo, and paint for the body.

Please go to the Micro RS4 discussions if all you can post is poppycock drivel. We didn't ask for it here and it's not welcome.

Just ordered mine after weeks of on-off debating against myself. Took a spat with the fiance to push me over the edge. I guess women aren't the only ones that go shopping when they're mad. Can't wait for it to get here!

i dont think its a matter of shopping when your mad. i think it might be a get even with the wife theory. just remember it doesn't hurt to treat yourself to a treat every once in awhile.

Hey

Don't know if this has been posted already, but this auction has two pretty cool movies of these cars in action. Check it out!

Item # 3107570303

ebxbob - I don't mind treating myself every now and then. But since I already treated myself to some tools, a new car wasn't in the budget.

But that didn't stop me. I also got her a MiniZ Beetle. She's been wanting one for a little while. Thats a double whammy of RC spending.

I'm just waiting for somebody to buy one and actually prove once and for all that it's either 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive.
I thought a while ago that it was 4 wheel drive but alot of other people say otherwise. It does look like a transfer case in the front though, doesn't it?

SteveH
01-22-2003, 07:56 AM
Like it has been already said. I talked to somebody on the Mini Z forum and they ( The overlander) is rear wheel drive only with the ability to lock up the diff. for better traction.

I got one last week from my lhs. They are only 2wd with a diff lock plate to lock the rear diff. The thing in the front that confuses people into thinking it is a front diff is the integrated servo saver. Mine came with the Land Cruiser body. I changed it out and put the body from my mini Jugg II. Looks awesome. will post some pics later.

My fiances mini-z came in today! My overland is still on a plane or ship somewhere. I wonder if I can open hers up, play with it until mine gets here, then package it up again before I give it to her?

Also, I didn't realize the packaging comes in chinese. I knew the overland would because it comes direct from the far east, but a Tower bought one? Shouldn't the package be in english? Later dudes!

i was thinking that it would be really cool if hpi or losi put out a stadium mini, i think they would be so cute and you can set up a course in your living room using parts of cardboard and books and soda cans. those that agree say aye and bug them for those things. they do listen to the demands of the consumers.

Well, I was at the LHS on Friday, and guess what Buddha got?

A Brand new Kyosho MINI-Z Overland! It is such a riot to drive, it has quite an impressive articulation. Not only that, but you can lock the rear diff for more climbing ability. The only thing that needs improvement is the shocks, which i'm already looking at improving/replacing! I will have pics soon!

Buddha

For those who want to know: I got it at Ultimate Hobbies in Orange, CA; for 139.99......

hey jeep

No its not 4WD. I've had mine for two months now. Its pretty neat. Runs great in my apartment and I'm still trying to make a track for it. I'll post pictures as soon as its done.

I know I've seen it for sale from a few US stores in the past month. Mostly off miniz and micro websites. anywho, I think its great and I like it better than my miniz racer for tooling around the apartment. Laters.

It will be good for slow-speed, scale off-roading, but it won't be good over bumps at speed, or for large jumps (Idiots will want to do stuff a 1/10th scale car can't do with them, when a jump less than an inch high would be more appropriate).

i have 2 they jump like no today over 2ft up off a bmx ramp donuts burnuts and offroadind is possible it has a servo saver and can tow many times its own weight and run on real snow sure its not a e-maxx but i think they are the best offroad rc under 1/16 scale and can chase cats like no 1/10 can loads of grip with 40deg tires
and poort fuel mileage;) sand mud water all capable by the overland yes both of mine can swim and they like duct tape for temporary repairs the rims dont sink into soft sand till u punch it then it throws sand everywhere not 4wd but a great rendition of real suv's plus mine became a custom pickup truck duct tape held a metal dodge ram toy body on quite nicely it fit the long setting nicely and made a good hitch mount the pic is after i switched back to the original body and ducttaped he hitch to it

Hi guys, I own a HPI Micro RS4 and a couple of MiniZ cars by Kyosho. Looking to upgrade to a 27Mhz 3 channel MX-3 Radio for my Micro, but was wondering if the MX-3 will work properly with the MINI-Z's ?

I think Futaba produces the Perfex Radio for Kyosho so would there be a compatibility problem between Sanwa and Futaba crystals ?? Thanks

Hey guys, ive heard these overland series are very easy to flip over on corners, ive thought about getting a pair for myself and my wife but if ya have to fight to keep them upright all the time it takes alot of the fun out of it. Id be running them on carpet and would like to hear back from anyone with experience, Thanks!!!
