I have heard of modifying motors but I really dont know much about it. I want to modify my trinity speed gem 9t double. But I dont know what to do. Someone said that I should get cobalt magnets and p-94 brushes... Is this race legal? Are they gonna check<LoL? How much of a difference is this gonna make? What other stuff can I do? Can any one post a link to where I can get these things? Thanx.

Cobalt magnets would be illegal for racing, only an experienced person should attempt trying to switch the magnets.
Changing the brush hoods will only change the power curve of the motor. Changing from a standup brush hood to a laydown or large brush setup will have the opposite effect. Usually there is a drop in RPM, but an increase in the Power (torque) while HP(watts) remain the same, efficiency may increase.

Things you can do to increase the power output is changing the timing adding 5-15 degrees will increase RPM but use more battery. Changing brushes from a low silver to high silver will increase comm wear but increase the power levels. Tweaking or adding more spring tension will prevent excessively brush bounce. High rpm motors need additional spring tensions usually a purple on the positive and red on the negative. The springs that come with the motor aren't always adaquate.

Some of these tweaks along regular maintenance should increase the power output.

what about people getting bearings and stuff? and how much do the cobalt magnets help? because I would be willing to do that on my bashing motor.

It would probably be cheaper in the long run to just buy a motor.
Removing the magnets can be a porblem (heat the can with a torch to loosen the glue, tap them out with a screwdriver and hammer) then replacing them with other magnets (Cobalt or Rare Earth) properly aligning and gluing (2 part epoxy) the magnets. Some glues fail when subjected to motor cleaners.

Because Cobalts magnets are stronger than the regular Wet Magnets you'll end up with a different power band from the motor. Instead of increasing HP you may retard it and the RPM and Torque output will be different. The thing with motors is that you need to find what effect the change is on the HP (watts) ouput will be. An increase in RPM and decrease in Torque and vice versa may not have a change on HP. HP is the true indicator of how fast one motor is over another. Changing from bushings to bearings will have the same effect increase in RPM, decrease in Torque but HP still remains the same. Bearing would have less friction than an unprepped bushing, but spend time polishing a bushing and it can be just as good.

Tweaking the armature (shimming it) so that is properly aligned within the the center of the magnetic field, aligning the brush hoods, making sure the comm is true, changing the brush content and spring spring tension will yeild about 3-10% increase. A hand wound motor of the same turn and wind will develop 10-30% more HP and be more efficient than a machine wound motor.

So really I should just get p-94 brushes, and get my comm cut. Then just leave it alone. Save my money for a hand wound. RIght?
