It will be good for both. For street, the step pins are terrible. Use some pro-line onroad tires (basically any kind is good), or use the HPI onroad truck wheels. Step Pins are great for basically all offroad tracks surfaces.

Guys...
I just bought a NIB (New In Box) RC10 #6011 kit for my classic collection for less than $80. I've got some old Tamiyas but I'm not too familiar with Associated history and I thought this was the place to ask.
Does anyone know when this kit was first introduced and how much they sell for currently? I've asked SteveP but he said he wasn't aware of a kit #6011. I'll post a pic later on tonight.

Jace, they usually sell for $85. I'll raise you the $5 over what you paid for it, I'll email you where to ship it :D
That is a heck of a deal though. Last time I saw a NIB 6011 it went for over $300, and that was quite a while ago. You scored big on that. As for introduction date... perhaps circa 1984? I'm not too sure.
"Video Truck" Mark? Come on, don't get all soft on me! My truck makes a great video truck! :D Although, a truck I could REALLY thrash would be nice. I do have limits to what I will do with mine :p
As for a good FM radio that won't break the bank: I suggest the JR XR3. A good friend of mine has one and swears by it. It's a very good deal. It has all the most commonly used features without any "fluff" like the 3PJS/3PDF and the M8 have.

I have pics of my video truck. Im gonna start making full lenght vhs and DVD's. The truck is an old tub chassis GT. Im welding a roll cage on it that prolly wieghts more than the truck, im not looking for speed here.
My grand finally jump for the first video will be off the helipad at the hospital by my school. I doubt the truck will really survive, but **** it will be cool, maybe a small explosion??? At night the entire hospital is lit up orange, and maybe ill put a small neon light on the truck so it can be seen, but i got a nice ramp I can put up on the helipad. The pad is ontop of a parking garage, u can drive right up to it.
When I mean video truck, it will only last 1 video, then ill be hunting for another rolling chassis. Ill post a before pic, and an pics as I progress on the roll cage and genral truck construction.

Jace, are you going to build it or keep it NIB?
Rc1oGtMaN
06-27-2001, 01:57 AM
Mark, maybe you should fill the shocks with the highest weight differential fluid you can find, and use some type of industrial strength springs too. That might save everything for another video, if you try your best to keep the truck flying flat. For a nice blueprint of a rollcage, you could copy the one that New Era makes. You could probably just use two stiffening rods that run the length of the chassis instead of making a full cage. How much is this vid going to cost? -Mark O.

Mark, I am gonna put some slick 50 in the shocks and use big bores. Gonna stack up some touring car springs for stiffness ontop of a red or blue associated spring.
The rollcage will be full.. I dont wanna risk braking more than I have to. Im also making it so if i touch the brake the motor will stall, I dont want the motor running at such an impact, ill break the connecting rod. Im gonna jump it, then once I get it close to the ground and flat, im shuting off my radio, then my friend will turn on his (same frequency) and stall the truck. I have plans to jump an unbuilt bridge (like in speed 2) and im gonna jump off of my middle school gym into a huge grass down hill slope, should be fun =).
Im actually thinking of making a series of full length vids and putting up a website and copyrighting them. If I keep doing the insane stuff the other people dont do, im sure they will sell. Ill prolly sell them from 10 - 20 bucks depending on what actual cost to make them comes to.

Mark,
cool idea. I am making a play around truck to. And i lost all of my ft turnbuckles(cuz my mom bought me lunsfords) and wi wanted to know where i can get the cheapest set of turn buckles. Oh yeah where can i get a fuel tank to i need that. I also lost 1 of my rear spare shocks so i'm going to put custom touring car shocks on the front and the normal front shocks on the back since I don't wanna wait for money to buy shocks.... Well mark lets have a race who ever finishes their basher first wins. mine is 80 percent done i just have to wait for my fuel tank and turnbuckles. Oh yeah i am going to use universals that are like 7 years old think they will hold up??? i don't :(
Rc1oGtMaN
06-27-2001, 02:37 PM
Todd, sure they'll hold up - if you just idle. Actually, they will probabably be up to the task.
Mark, Industrial strength springs will probably be better, and cheaper than the TC springs, and regular truck ones. Slick fifty is a good idea. Maybe you could find some shock pistons that have no holes for some super slow movement. -Mark
RC10GTMark
06-27-2001, 05:59 PM
I think slick 50 with a #1 piston autta do it, lol. You can buy turnbuckles from associated, cheap ones for like 10 bucks I think, but not positive.
No way I could race you though dude, I have alot of building and welding ahead of me, im gonna put this throuhg some INSANE jumps.
The three big jumps I have scheduled now are off the helipad, from bridge to bridge and off of the gym in the middle school.
I also plan to video tape the truck driving around in an office building or something, to take up time on the tape and because no body would think of doing it but stupid me =). This tape is gonna have some stuff you would never expect to see on it. We thought about putting a cat on the GT and jumping across this pound, but im not inhumane so I dont have the heart to do it. If the truck lands all those jumps with minimal damnage, like I can fix it with 20 bucks or a welder, then the truck is gonna make a big jump and explode or something in mid air =).

Hey guys Ive got a problem. I tried my new gt for the first time today and it did not go to well. I have a os hyper cvx .15 and it started well enough but the problem was that as soon as it started the truck would take off(into my hedges ;)). I though that the idle was too high causing the clutch to engage so I lowered the idle but at idle the wheels continued to spin.
So now Im not sure what to do, I think that its the clutch but I dont know how to fix the problem. Could somebody please help.
Thanks :)

Mark, actually the stock clutch is adjustable. The holes that are in it are a reference as to where to cut the shoes. One of the most valuable things you could ever get, the GT tuning guide will tell you all about cutting the clutch, and how to install it.
Sk8boarder, as for the truck creeping at idle, it's all up to you. I like to have no brake or throttle on at idle (do this by putting gaps in the linkages), but it's all how you like to have your truck setup. There are no right ways to do things sometimes on the truck, as it ia all how you like to drive. And close the rotor up all the way, then turn the idle screw until you have it at a nice idle.
Todd, how did you stop? When I used to have an AM radio I would get lots of interference from a grocery store by my house. The truck would just go full speed, and I'd lose control. One day it happened when it was coming back towards me and I had to stop it with my bare foot. It hurt a lot since the truck had beaucoup room to speed up. -Mark

I just ran 3 tanks through my truck and Im amazed with it. In grass the truck does wheelys and its so darn fast Im not used to the speed and power(I though my T-maxx was really fast) I was going wot and when I went over a crack in the road, the front came up and carried them for like ten feet. The CX2P is nice. It comes with the Z connectors and the same 3ch receiver as the M8. It comes with some rubber grip extenders that are okay, but you have to hot glue them in.
Sk8boarder, did you break in the engine? just checking...

HEHE ohh yeaaa you can cut the clutch. Oh well I just bought the MIP 4-in-1. You can make adjustments that much easier. You cant glue back clutch shoe you cut off.
Doing a full speed run how long does it take you to stop? Mine coasts for a while but I usually just turn sharply left and right to slow it down enough to were I can run after it.

Welcome back Nick. When you left we talking about the Traxxas battery box you use as a receiver cover for your truck. What truck is the battery box for? My lhs stock TRX parts, so I think I'll buy one of those.
Mark, I try to hit something head on so it's garuanteed to stop or flip when my truck goes out of control. About the stock clutch shoes, you can't glue the teflon back together, but that's why there is a tuning guide. The guide has a length shown for all types of surfaces.
RCGuy, the RTR GT comes with a disc brake. You need to buy an aluminum brake nut (the thing the disc is mounted on) or else you'll get the same thing as Todd. The brake is mounted behind the spur gear. It has two peices of metal right next to it which are what grab the disc to slow it down (I think the manual calls them calipers). The servo is connected to one of these, and when you tap the brakes, it squeezes on the disc. The disc is mounted on the topshaft, which is the top gear in the tranny. You can set the brake so that it either comes on when you let off the gas, or you can make it only come on when you push the trigger forward on the transmitter. -Mark

Cool hhhhmmm...
As for the hyper, lower the idle were it sound good. The truck should creap foward a little bit at idle. Adjust the nut on the brake to make it stay kinda still, but not where it stops. With the motor off, electronics on your truck should have a little bit of risistance trying to roll foward, but when you hit the gas, it should have none. (with the motor off). If you hit the gas and the brake does not disingage it is to tight, loosen the brake.
If the brake drags it will heat up and you'll have a new set of problems. The stock clutch isn't adjustable so you dont have to worry about it working or not, it either will or wont.

The trigger on your radio can be pushed two ways. Back like a gun (throttle) and up for the brake. You can adjust the trim on the radio (fine adjustment knob) and make the brake drage a little bit when your at idle. You can also adjust the trim to make it so the only time the brake is applied is when you press the brake.
Also, it isn't a hydrolic caliper like on a real car. It is mechanical. I is a bend rod that applies pressure to the pad.

I got my new RC10Gt team and they include the new silver pipe, I cut my shoes in between the 2nd and 3rd hole but it engages a little bit too late for me so I will stick in an 4 in 1 tonight, its 8:36 and I finally got my mod Ezstarter (made an adaptor for a yank eliminator to connnect to it) to start the engine and it ran great, the idle was too low that was my problem, but when I give it gas it has a high pitched sound not like my Npede's pipe, is it supposed to be like this with the new pipe? I know im running very rich so thats not the problem, but it has to rev very high to engage the clutch, I will try my traxxas 2 shoe clutch with the spring today. I get my paycheck so I will buy a nice glow starter and some AA batteries for the remote and the Rx.

VLBR, did you buy the new Team Built GT? I think AE made that to RTR specs, so you probably got the RTR pipe. Does the pipe have a long flat belly or one that gets bigger gradually? If it's the one with that gets bigger gradually, you have the RTR pipe, but I don't think that's what is making that noise. It might be your pilot shaft or diff. Put some thread lock on the shaft, and tighten the diff down all the way. Back out the thust bolt 1/8th of a turn and you'll have a goo setting.
Todd, the RPM arms are very flexible. Gokou uses them to bash, so you might want to ask him for the full low down. No, running your engine rich will not mess it up. -Mark

vlbr, I have to semi-disagree. I use the rpm arms in front and I didn't notice a difference between them and stock. You can take both arms and twist them, you'll flex the rpm and crack the stock, so yes they flex, but not to a point were it messes up handling. I like them alot, take some punishment.

Gokou
06-29-2001, 10:32 PM
Nick: the flywheel will get hot-- it's connected right to the crank, which is probably close to the temp of the head. Plus it has to deal with the heat the clutch generates, so yes, the flywheel is usually hot. :)
As for Sponsored by Tyco (love the name!): yes, the RPM arms are more flexible than the stock ones. However, they aren't crap, not by any means. Besides looking awesome, they are ultra durable-- they will flex before they snap. However, because they do flex more than the stock arms, they don't handle as well as the stock FT arms, because the FT arms are much stiffer. They certainly don't handle bad though, the difference is very subtle-- you REALLY have to have a good feel for your truck to notice a difference, and even then you won't be able to tell a difference over smooth to semi-rough situations. Only when it gets really rough is when the RPM arms start to flex and then the truck sometimes darts this way and that. I run the RPM arms for bashing only, because I have yet to destroy one, while I've destroyed about 8 AE arms bashing with my truck. I do switch and run the AE arms when I go racing though, because the stiffer arms make the handling a bit more predictable in the rough, which can mean the difference between 1st and second place. Then again, crashing and breaking an arm can lead to a DNF, and the RPMs will certainly stand up to a lot more abuse than the stock A-Arms. It's really a trade off, and you have to make the call yourself, but personally, I feel the RPM arms work great for 99% of the time, and that most people won't tell a difference between them and the stockers.
In other news, and a bit off topic... I decided it was time for a new motor. I mentioned this about, oh, 20 pages back. It's about done now. And no, it's not a .12, but it is side exhaust :D

Woohoo! This is my 500th post! I decided I couldn't waste it anywhere but my favorite place online, so here I am.
My brother brought home one those big orange and white road barrels last night. Don't ask me where he got it from, but I've been building a ramp out of it all day. It's pretty cool. I would say that it is just under four feet tall at the lip. I just stuffed some sandbags inside of it, and then piled dirt onto it. I was jumping a '94 Honda FourTrax off of it earlier. Surprisingly, the barrel stood up to abuse the fourwheeler inflicted onto it. When he leaves for college I have to give it back to him, because he's using it as a trash can. :D Oh yeah, I forgot to add that there was a smaller metal barrel that I put on top of the orange one. -Mark

Nice 929 Mark. I love the polished frame. I never replaced my 600F3 that got stolen, instead I used the insurance check to help pay for my last quarter of tuition. I'll have to hold off on buying that F4i for a while... And you're right, my car can't keep up with your bike... yet. :D I have two brand new Garrett T3/T4 Hybrid turbos sitting in my garage which I'll toss on my new motor probably this winter, which should get me around the 800-850hp mark with rather low boost (<10psi). However I'll have to switch over to injection first, as I don't even want to try running twin turbos with a carb.
And no, the Vette never sold. Some Japanese businessman was going to buy it and put in in a bar with a 1960's theme and have people dress up in the period correct attire and sing around it. No, I am not kidding. Weirdo. :p The deal fell through, so we still have it. My dad is getting all antsy to build his blown 540ci '70 Chevelle, but the Vette has to go before that happens.
As for the shop: That's my buddy's shop, where I do a lot of my work and keep a lot of my toys. Yes, it is spotless. All the floors are epoxy coated and get mopped once a day. The Kart has a Honda 125cc that I still haven't installed. I used to race 80cc's when I was around 13-14, and those were fast. I had a ride on a 125cc last year, and that was REALLY fast. The 250cc should be absolutely insane, I'd be careful ;) I am serious though. Make sure that sucker has AWESOME brakes before you even think about opening it up.
Yeah, the DE is a fun toy. It's my "oversize novelty noisemaker." I'd be kidding myself if I said it was anything else. I had a .50 DE also, but I sold it off because the .44 is quite a bit more accurate, plus ammo is about 70% as much as a box of 50AE. The 50AE however just had that "holy crap!" value everytime you pulled the trigger-- talk about muzzle blast! Not that the .44 is shabby... I'll be getting a Remington 700 .338 in stainless/black with a muzzle break soon, as well as a Springfield M-21, and perhaps a compensated 6" 1911 for competition shooting later this summer after I pay the engine bills. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if it's loud, fast, looks cool, or goes bang, I love them :D
My GT has been sitting neglected on the shelf for the last 2 weeks. I'll have to pull it out tomorrow and maybe shoot some more silly videos involving fire. I rather liked doing that last time around :p
RC10GTMark

You competition shoot? Sweet I do too but I shoot .177 caliber pellet rifles on a 30 foot range, weak gun but still very competitive. I shoot about a 280 in all three positions.
That kart I was talking about is almost done, cant wait. It has 4 piston disk brakes all the way around. Prolly has better brakes than my bike. BTW glad you like the bike, dont go f4i, get a 929rr =).
As far as pistols I am not quite old enough for them yet. My dad shoots alot though and my sister in law is a gun dealer. I shoot my fathers beretta 92fs all the time and love it. It has an enlarged port so it wont jam, it was accurized with a laser and has an enlarged bufferplate. That thing nearly puts the firing pin through the bullet. Not as much of a "oh **** " like the DE but I can empty the clip pretty **** fast and accurate.
Tell your friend his shop is awesome, I love it. In the one picture of the motor, there is a yellow and blue car behind, looks like a race car, what is it?
Im gonna start making a video with a couple friends soon. Have some sick jumps planned so im gonna give you some competition gokou.

Mark, I'm working on the digicam. I have about a 20% chance of getting a hold of it. I have some really nice pics with a regular camera. I'll try to find a ride to kinko's or something so I can scan the suckers. Man, being 15 isn't cool. I'll be driving next year so that'll be cool though. Back to the camera...I'm trying to buy a digital camera before I have to kill the ramp in August. My dad is trying to sell his clinic to his hospital, and then we'll have beaucoup money for either a digital movie camera, or a digicam. (He owns the clinic and is on the board of the hospital. They were both losing money so they are merging.) He thinks the clinic deal will go through in mid July, so there is chance I can give you pics or movies around the end of July.
Gokou, how many hobbies do you have? Guns, cars, rc cars, anything else? I can barely barely do two things. I play guitar and do the rc gig, and my buddies are about to kick me out of their band because I hardly play with them. Too bad about the Corvette. Speaking of Vettes, my uncle has a black (1972?) Corvette Stingray. It's sweet. The entire car is stock and mint. He bought it and put in his garage. Too bad that he doesn't drive it. The car has been a shelf for the past five or six years.

Mark-- it's a Pro-Stock Truck. My friend campaigns 2 trucks on the NHRA national event circuit, and the truck in the background of the pics is a spare truck that is currently getting rebuilt. (You can probably guess who he is by the paint scheme...) I'd take more pics of the shop and equipment, but a lot of it it pretty proprietary and his opponents would love to get a glimpse of it. He hasn't told me I can't take pictures of the stuff, but I know he would be pretty upset if I did and let some of his tricks slip out.
As far as hobbies go, I have way too many for the amount of time I have, especially since I've been so busy at work lately. I kind of rotate through them. Let's see... cars, motorcycles, r/c cars (duh), karts, firearms (both collecting and shooting), photography, computers, stereo gear (home theater mostly, used to be into car audio but the sound of the engine is much more captivating :D ), military aircraft, equipment, and arms, etc. I'm sure there's more I missed. When I have time free from all that I like to build random stuff. I picked up a Garrett GTP 30-67 turbine last year (originally used as APUs in helicopters) which I plan on stuffing in a kart if I ever get the chance, probably this winter. I'm also half-way through turning an old AiResearch diesel truck turbo into an afterburning turbine engine. A lot of my stuff sits for a while because I simply don't have the time for it, and when I do find time for it, I'm usually out of money, which is what my current financial situation is: flat broke. :D
Most people who know me say I need to narrow down my hobbies, but I have too much fun with all of them, even if I only get around to each of them every other month or so. Heck, I planned on taking my GT racing every other weekend this summer but so far I've had to work every Saturday. Doh! :(
Now, back to R/Cs... anyone heard about Mugen's new 2wd stadium truck? I've heard rumors which are very promising... should be interesting when we finally see pictures of it.

I use blue thunder 20% race formula for racing and fast bashing. When im just messing around I use traxxas 20%. CV-R has no problem adjusting to the different fuels and it seems to like that traxxas fuel, I might actually race it and see how I like it.

I feel dumb. I have been destroying clutch bearins like crazy. I called associated and he said you gotta shim the clutch. Well I couldn't see where it was rubbing so I didn't know how to shim it. Well it finally rubbed enough so I can see. The front of the MIP clutch is rubbing on the clutch bell creating excess heat, I shimmed the bell so it would stick out past the clutch and problem solved.
I keep killing wheel bearins in the rear to from the power of the CV-R but the only explanation I have with that is the power of the motor on the little bearings. Im upgrading to 1/4 cvd's, rpm hub carriers and bigger bearings as advised by the other mark.

ummm just wondering but i thought that the 1/4 bearings where the ones that blew, that why people use the 3/16 bearings.
Rc1oGtMaN
07-01-2001, 11:11 PM
Mark, I think you've got it a little backwards. The 1/4" CVD's have bigger axles, and smaller, more fragile bearings than the ones that the smaller, 3/16" axles. You need to keep the 3/16'inchers, because they are the more durable. You could put some bushings in and they will be basically indestructable.
The Mugen truck looks really cool, but I think I'll stick with my GT, and hopefully AE will make some running upgrades to keep it on par if the Mugen sets a new standard.
I'm kinda bummed today. My dad has been offered a job at Harvard to be the vice chairman of their medical school. I don't want to move to Boston. There's like a 30% chance we might do it. I just hope someone can talk him out of it.

I anticipate seeing the Mugen truck with pivot ball suspension at all 4 corners... I really don't expect Mugen to go with a standard a-arm/turnbuckle/carrier setup. Pivot ball suspension on a 1/10 stadium truck would be very cool. I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

The whole reason I don't have a T-Maxx is because they are way too fragile. If I wanted an MT, it would definately be a Clodbuster, hands down.
Todd, they have some new software for the BB. I was on last night, and they kicked me off the site for like 10 minutes.
RCGuy, I assume that you are talking about using your hand or transmitter to open the carb? You can do either. It's not good to put MMO down the carb, but it seems okay with other after run oils. MMO will attack the o rings and make them swell up and tare or leak.

What O-Rings? The only o-ring I can think of is the one that seals the carb to the crank case, but that is on the outside of the barb throat were oil cant get to it.
Corredt me if im wrong, just wondering. I always open the carb WOT and drip it directly onto the crank and in the crank.

Today I had a blast with my gt. It was the first time that I actually took it off road and it was sooo fun. But I also had my first real crash today. I was warming up the engine by driving it with out the body on in the parking lot of the school that I was at. Well I sarted to do some speed runs and as I was going full speed I hit a speed bump. I thought that the truck would of just jumped but instead the truck fliped right over and landed upside down, then slide for like 15 to 20 feet. Man it was so painfull to watch :( After it stoped sliding I went to pick it up to see the damage, the only thing that got messed was the rear shock tower got scrapped pretty badly and the front shock tower bolts got eaten up as well. After that I decided to not drive my truck on the pavement anymore and I went to the baseball diamond. OMG driving in it is so fun, going full speed and sliding around kicking up tons of dirt and dust, I just had a blast.
After today im so glade that I got this truck and I cant wait to go offroading again.

Baseballs diamonds are fun, but my favorite place to bash/race my friends is at my highschool track. That loose clay/gravel stuff is awesome for powerslides. You have to try driving out there. You'll have an absolute blast!
It's 11:30, my time, and for some reason, I just sat through "The Never Ending Story." That used to be my favorite movie, and now I realize that the Luck Dragon isn't a dog - which is what I thought it was when I was like three.

a) run time competition
b) long jump
c) high jump
d) backwards driving (electric only, of course)
e) two man driving
f) Blindfolded driving with a guy telling the driver directions
g) Driving w/o tires, but with foam inserts
Again, any submissions would be greatly appreciated.

You could do a brick pull. Do a drag race pulling a brick.
Normal Drag Racing
Barrel Racing
See what truck is stronger/more traction, tie them up with a rope, rear shock tower to shock tower, and see which truck can drag the other past a certian line. Call that the diff eater.
A hill climb
only ideas i can think of off the top of my head. I like the differential eater =)

richie. Was your gas tank just about empty? What I think happened is your gas tank emptied out, and the motor started burning the fumes from the tank. That burns faster and hotter making it idle alot higher and rev up. The hissing sound is from the excessive heat.
Flame out is just when you burn up your glow plug coil.

Barrel racing is what they do with horses.
you have 4 barrels
1 2
3 4
you start at one, drive to 4, then go around it and up to 2, then go around it and down to 3, then around it and back to 1. you do lap times.

Mark, good ideas. I'll mention the two forms of drag racing and the diff eater, but I don't think the guys at the track will want to kill their trannies very readily. What's a barrel race? I should probaby know this, but I'm being retarded this morning.
Todd, nice suggestions, but there isn't too much to kick up for a rooster tail contest and we don't have a big rock hill very close to the track. At the track there's the clay track, then our parking lot is a big rock parking lot. It would be hard to kick up enough of the rocks to make a good rooster tail.
RitchiesGT, I'm not an expert on engines, but it sounds like you might have flamed out. Like I said, I'm not too good with engines, so I can't tell you why you still here the hissing sounds.

If it is running fine, just turn the high end like 1/8 turn out to make it A LITTLE BIT richer, and you should be safe. I suggest investing in a temp gun. The only hissing I ever get is from over heating.
illbreakit
07-04-2001, 05:53 AM
If you plugged your pipe to kill your engine then the hissing was extra tank pressure bleeding off, it is normal.
Just a little question about throttle return springs; How many of your GT's, if you open the throttle servo by hand(radio off) will the return spring close your throttle all the way? The reason I am asking is at the CDN Roar nats this weekend, My gt got teched on this 2 minutes before the B main. I had Just one the C main, with absolutly no compression in my cv, had to run it so rich 175-185 deg. any hotter and it would flame out on decelleration. It was so bad that I only made 3 complete laps on Sat in qualifying. But I managed to win the C :D Faster is not allways better.
But anyways, 2 minuts before the B, I get told, for the first time all wkend, that my spring isn't strong enuff. It will close my throttle with the vibrations of the engine running, but not with every thing off, Does anyony have a solution. I was running stock linkage and a stock Futaba servo.
Ps Got some good picks of the race will hopefully post nxt wk

Hi all!
My GT is finally up and running and this thing rocks!
Mine has a Dynamite .12SPD and it screams! Needless to say, I think my T-Maxx will spend some time on the shelf to think about what it's done ;)
I am running the truck stock except for a RR metal spur gear and clutch bell. I wasn't able to use the spacer that came with the spur gear because it made the gear rub the suspension arm. I know this is a common problem with stock spurs, I had to put my stock spur in a lathe and take some material off to make it work. Is anyone using the Robinson gear? How is the fit?
Also, I'm using Pro-Line Gladiator 2 tires in the rear and these things hook up great on my track.
I have one other question: My engine runs great. It idles nicely, has very good bottom end power and runs nice on top too. There is no "gurgling" from rich running and the temp after some hard running is around 245 F. I was pleased with my tuning but when I pinch the fuel line the engine dies very quickly,... almost immediately. If I richen the low end needle even a little bit, it runs horrible right away,... it's like I've found the "sweet spot". Is this OK? Should I richen up the low end and try to re-tune the high end? The reason I haven't tried this so far is because I thought if the low end was too lean the engine would stall easily,... especially if the truck flipped. This isn't the case.
I would appreciate some advice. I've gotten much better at engine tuning but I need to be an expert LOL. My last couple of posts here have sort of been ignored,... did I do something wrong? I assume I just posted on a page where there was some cool tech talk going on and my post didn't fit,... I hope it doesn't happen thins time ;)
I just don't understand why we don't have our own forum. Then instead of searching through 60 or so pages to find info, we could use the actual search feature to find threads with pertinent info,... oh well. Thanks for reading

Big Wig, sorry that we ignored your post. There probably was something that all of us got wrapped up in, and when we would reply, your Q's didn't stick out in our minds. Sorry. Sounds like you're running lean. When you pinch the fuel line it should die in about 3-5 seconds. Don't tune by looking at how much smoke is coming out of your engine, because there are lots of things that affect how much smoke is visible.
I don't think that this thread will be turned into a forum. If we got it, then all the other car owners would want their own forums. It just won't work. You don't want to sift through a billion car types for your forum. It just gets to be too much. IMO, the search feature should direct you to the exact page where the info you are looking for is located.

ok thanx guys/girls(trying to be politicly correct).if thats all it is then i wont worry about it.i just wanted to make sure i wasnt going to wreck the engine cuz at a hundred bucks an engine it starts to get expensive after the first 2 or 3.so far i like the truck its only my second nitro R/C but these little trucks are more fum than a real truck.and i really like the dynamite 12SPD.its been very stong running and dependable.i finally got to kill a gallon of fuel by driving it instead of adjusting and breaking stuff. :D

Rc1oGtMaN,
Thanks for the reply! I'm not tuning by the amount of smoke, if I richen the low end the engine just runs terrible. It loads up badly when idling and take off isn't crisp at all. At the setting I'm running it's awesome!
I guess my next question is: Should I set the low end needle until the engine takes 3 - 5 seconds to die after pinching the fuel line and then use the high end needle to get it running right? Is this common?
When I started tuning the engine I left the settings where they were from the factory and tuned the high speed mixture first. I tuned it for maximum RPM then backed it off (richened) 1/4 turn. I then used the low speed mixture to get it to idle nicely and consistently and also for crisp throttle respose. Any feedback on my problem ;) is very appreciated
thanks

Well, my fourth of July was pretty awesome. During the day I went to parties and whatnot, but the last party was kinda different. The guy throwing the party was a super high profile lawyer, and his family. He invited my family, the director of the port of New Orleans, and his family. The thing about it was that the director of the port had the Mississippi River Fireboat guys pick us up and take us right up close to the fireworks being fired from some barges. What's so special about that? We were the only people on the river, since the port is closed to all traffic. Then, I came home and burned the poo out of my thumb on a sparkler bomb that my brother and I made.
Big Wig, now that I go back and think about it all, you might not want to touch your settings. The temp is pretty darn good for running hard, and you say you love the way the engine is running. You might be super close to maximum efficiency and power. A sign of this is having the plug go grey quickly. Don't worry if it's grey at this point, because it will run just fine. I heard that you can see if you're running lean by checking for small indentations under the head where the sleeve or picton come in contact with the head.

My fourth of july was pretty cool too. I was one of the only ones in the lake cause they made everyone get out at night, but I slipped passed with 2 friends and swam out to this boey big enough for us to sit on. It rocked. We also met a ******* couple, and they were more than happy to demonstrate any questions we asked, now that is education.
I think the other Mark is right. If the motor isn't being damaged and is running good, I wouldn't mess with it. Glad you like the GT, much more durable than traxxas in my opinion.

Thanks guys! I will leave my settings where they are and keep my eye on the temp. I'll check the plug as well.
One more Q: I don't have my stack of RCCA mags handy (my nephew recently broke his arm and he's been flipping through them) and I've wanted to read the recent article on temp guns. I just picked up a Raytek mini temp and I want to make sure how far away to hold the gun from the engine and exactly where to point it? I've been holding it 4 - 6 inches away and aiming right next to the plug. Of course I've checked other areas as well to make sure this was the hottest spot. How do you guys do it?
thanks

guys? did anyone see my question on heat guns?
Gokou
07-06-2001, 01:14 PM
BigWig: I don't have a Raytek but when I see people at the track use Rayteks, they hold them as close as they can to the head and slowly pass the sensor window over the hole in the head for the glow plug, and they take the highest temp. Even though infrared temp guns are non-contact devices, the closer you can get it to the heat source the better, as it minimizes outside influcences.
Rc1oGtMaN: The paint on the Elky is a custom blend of PPG Tangerine Orange, I'd have to go find my spare quart to get the exact blend. As for the engine-- it's going in my 69 Chevelle. Pics of the cars are HERE (http://www.jimdyerchevyclassics.com/stuff/cars/). The pic of the Elky isn't the greatest, if I get around to washing it this weekend I'll take a new one.

The "L" portions are the gears. This way, if you need new gears, you don't have to buy them, you can just flip them around. I was just sitting in my workshop today watching the tube, and thinking about my truck when I thought about that. (about me sitting in my shop watching the TV, I'm not kidding. I put a TV, VCR, my original Nintendo, and a cooler in the room so I live in there all day. Yeah, it's pretty sick that I did that but Tim Taylor from Home Improvement would be so proud. :D )

Turbo, sweet. There's a little kid at my track who does the opposite of what you did sometimes. He has a XXX, and he's like 12. Well, during warm ups on race day, sometimes his buggy will be really hooked up, and he'll go so fast that he has to wait for the gas trucks to catch back up with him. He's only running a Green Machine 3 Pro as his motor! That kid is good. He drove my GT once, and he was flying. The boy is a natural.

Trucks,
My .12 SPD runs awesome at around 260 degrees. I hear a lot of folks talking about their engines running in the low 200's but mine just doesn't seem to like it.
I took Ron Paris' advice and tuned for performance since there's no perfect temp for ANY engine. I keep track of the temps just so I know what temp my engine runs good at on a given day.
If anyone else is running a .12 SPD, I'd like to hear what temp your runs best at.
BTW Trucks, how much fuel did your SPD drink before you had to rebuild it?

Wojo, Mark is right. I used to think tha there was a set temp, but Steve P and Ron Paris both say that you use a temp device as a reference for how the engine should run on a given day. Also, you should try to figure out how far away from the actual temp your MIP is, since they aren't very acurate. Just ask someone w/a temp gun to give you a read out to see how far off you are.

big wig, I had about half a gallon thru it before it had no compression, so I replaced the pistion and slevee.
the engine didn't seem to have that much compression when I got it new, but now it has so much you can hardly turn it over.
I have about 10 tanks of fuel thru this piston, and I'm tring to keep it under 200 to last longer, but it will hardly run.

Dont tune for temprature. If that piston and sleeve is new and your running it that rich (cold) it is gonna wear off more metal than nessecarry.
You need to tune it where it runs right, then worry about temp.

Morpheus, get the blue chassis conversion. It makes the truck totally different - but way better. You can't just buy the chassis, you have to buy the full conversion kit. The kit is like 40-45, and gives you some nose tubes w/braces and a new engine and tranny mount.
Todd, I haven't seen that on. It sounds sweet though. I really like Nick's body. Maybe I'll have to steal that paint scheme if he ever kills it.

ok just checking about the colors... well what ***** for me is that my lhs puts on races and stuff that that but there all on road! so when i race i have to lower the center of gravity so i can win... and that is a pain. And the only offroad coruse is 2 1/2 hours away and i can't go there every sun. oh well.

I have about 4 offroad tracks near me and about 5 onroad. I just cant seem to make it out to any of them. 2 of the 4 offroad are electric only though =(.
I think im gonna get a new chassis too. I already have the blue one but it is slightly bent, and it makes my body have a real tight fit and puts lots of pressure on my body posts.

Hey, I will be racing two T-maxx's in a baseball diamond. One of the maxxes has a .21 of some sort(I think its a ttr or os) and the other has a brand new os .12 hyper cv-x. Im running a .15 hyper cv-x in my ft gt with stock gearing, Im also running the stock pro loine tires that come with the truck. Im wondering if Ill be able to beat them, Im pretty sure that I wil be able but I would like to know before I get there.

Ya I agree with GT man. The Maxxes may (depends on what they have) have a better power:weigh ratio but the GT will have handling. Just keep a cool head and drive smart. You should be A-okay. If worst comes to worst just try to take them out and flip them. :D

Ok i have both the GT and Maxx and i have raced both at teh same time, if the T acualy does manage to creep up on you...aim for the back left wheel9Or right, dpends on what side) when the truck starts to go side way the drive, out of reactions tries to counter steer it....chances are it will flip, he has to be in second tho, normaly when the T is turing sharp, and the front inside wheel lifs up, thats the sweet spot to aim for..you hit that...its going over.

I've got a few GPM parts but I haven't been able to convince myself to spend $50 on a pair of shocks yet. They're Gpm shock ends, silver springs painted yellow. I'm running an OS CV15 non p/s. looking real hard for a Novarossi, but not having any luck. How does the OS CVR compare to an MT12. should I wait for ever to get a mt12 or get the CVR??? the body is a proline gmc extended cab. and yes I painted it myself with cans. I'll post pics of the chassis as soon as I get it cleaned up, running through lots of rain and mud in VT.  :D

Hey Trucks [Doug],it's "Crash" from sparks. What's your email? I didnt make it today cause my mom was too tired to bring me over,i've got my AE shocks back on,finally, rebuilt them, have the truck sitting level now.I still cant find the leak in my engine,i think it's the one way bearing. I've got my truck running kick arse now,my problem on oval was my servo was stripped,i just got a hitec metal gear servo from R/C Hobbies, gonna see if it works better. I was beating the crap out of the other gas trucks untill my servo went, and then my day went down the drain. BTW guys, how many of you run your gt's on oval? I like to race oval more than offroad. I know i would be a good driver,if i got my truck the way i like it. I was beating that white gt,till the tmaxx run over us,then both our days was over.

Gt_bb, I'm running a 12 CV-R and I love it. Its a great engine; its powerful and just almost as easy to tune as the CV series. They just dynoed this engine in Nitro and it came out at .88 which is pretty good considering its an actual, real-life rating and not some manufacturer's specs.

Rc1oGtMaN
07-16-2001, 04:23 PM
Mark, I want the settings so that if someone fools with my needles or I have to rebuild the engine, I know where to start. The engine is tuned perfectly right now and I love it. First pull, and it's ready to eat up the track.
About the Picco vs. the CV-R, they are very different. The picco has a great power band and makes tons of RPM's, which is why it is such a screamer. This engine is great for the straights. An OS CV can beat it in the turns, but they have nothing on this engine when it comes to those looong straightaways. Piccos are a wee bit hard for newbies to tune, but they aren't bad when you get the hang of it. The CV-R has more torque, and does awesome out of the hole and explodes out of the turns. This thing isn't a slouch on for the straights though. They are both very good engines. I can't give you a full write up on the CV-R, since I don't have one. The Novas are awesome, and I think they are a lot like Piccos. I don't know much about Novarossis, so wait for somebody else to drop in about those.
PnP, I don;t believe there is a direct drive avalable for the GT. Why do you want one? That's a very weird thing to do to a GT. It would pretty tough on the car as well.

I was out jumping my gt for the first time yesterday and I was having a hard time keeping the nose down. Even if I would slam on the brakes in the air the truck woulds still piont the nose up. So after that day was over I had broken the wing off,it was only taped on so I was able to put it back with no problem and a rear body post got ripped right off of its screw so I was able to just screw it back in. The thing is I did not know why my truck was was always jumping and having the nose go up all the time. I thought that maybe it was cause the jump that I built had too much of an angle to hit so I change the pitch of it and tried it today. My truck still jumped the same and I ended ripping thw wing off again but I decided to leave it off and keep having fun. What I noticed is that with the wing off, the truck jumps a lot smoother and I was having a blast. :) :)
A lot of you probably already new this but Im happy that I found it out cause now I have a truck that is fast, jumps great and tjat is just awesome. ;)
rc10gt_bb
07-16-2001, 08:44 PM
Also, if you let off the throttle right befor you reach the jump, and then hammer it to get the rpm's up, it will be more responsive when you hit the brakes in the air.

420, you don't need a direct drive, just a little more time to learn how to work and drive your truck. It took me 3 or four months to win my first race and that was i the novice class. We don't have that class now so it's going to be even harder so take it easy and just have fun.

SPAM! Edit that out. It's against the rules.
Skateboarder, I think you have it bas-ackwards. When the nose points up, go give it gas. Applying the brakes makes the nose stick up. You can also fix your problem by putting stiffer springs in the back, and softer ones in the front. The wing is good for racing (screw it on if you race too), but you should keep it off for bashing.
Ran the Picco some more today. I have to say that I am very impressed with this engine. Sooo fast compared to my .15 FE and the old OS CV.
