Hey pudder, just wanted to let u know that I changed my shock oil to 35 wt and put gladiator tires on for very loose track. They laughed at me till I whooped em. My truck held straight as an arrow while they did doughnuts. I got first in tne qualifiers but races were runnnin late and i had reservations so had to go before mains. Have to wait till next friday. My front end was plowing trough corners so it took a lot of braking to get around corners. Any suggestions on fixing this. Dropping the oit wt on front shocks comes to mind but not sure. tanx:D

So did my setup help a bit? That is good that you used gladiator tires, because that would have been my second choice.

If you need more steering and you cant move anything more up front, put a couple of lead weights in the bulkhead, people at my track do that with their trucks.

hey pudder a long time ago a guy named offroader talked about higher body mounting posts and that u could get them from tower hobbies. I looked at them and how do mount them on your car?just ordered team orion rush 19 turn double w/ bearings/adjustable timing motor and a 20 tooth pinion instead of the stock 18 toother. I think it will go faster but what does adjustable timing mean. THanks alot

pudder
07-29-2002, 02:00 PM
I have no clue about the body posts.

Adjustable timing is the ability to move the endbell to differen timing degrees for more torque/speed, ect.

hey jdm3849, were would you go to see the knew evader bx buggy?

I haven't put any Losi parts on my Evader, and won't since someone is going to be buying it in the near future.

Also, any Losi XXXT or XXT body will work for the Evader. :)

You can go to tower hobbies and do a search for it, it only shows the picture and has the price of 189.99 rtr, There is no specs for it there but they would be alike to the evaders.

If I install a Chameleon 2, what pinion should I get...or should I stay with the stock 20T? I was thinking of going to a 19T or a 21T, but what do you think?

Hi, guys!

For those who read the Rustler thread/forum, I apologise for the cross posting, but no one there has replied and this forum seems to have a lot of action.

I need some opinions, please. I'm getting ready to buy my first "real" RC car (started out with a Nikko) and I have a few on my "short list." The ones that I'm seriously considering are the Duratrax Evader and the Traxxas Rustler. I was considering another that has a Baja buggy body on it, but I figure I can find a similar body for one of the above. I probably will buy an RTR and start from there.

Which of the above two would you guys recommend, and why? Also, what type of motor would you suggest, as well as ESC to go with it if it won't work with the stock ESC for either model?

My best friend has an E-Maxx and I'd like something that will keep up with his, speed-wise. Though we'll be making a dirt track in my back yard, we sometimes will play around on the street. I understand that I can just swap tires/wheels for street play. I have no aspirations to race - this will be mostly for your average back yard bashing kinda stuff, so I'm also looking at durability.

I'd really like to hear from those with experience. Thanks a bunch for any help offered!

hey pudder

yea the gladiators were an excelent choice. The other guys at the track laughed but not after I lapped em during qualifiers cause they were spinning out and not hooking up.I originaly had step pins on order but it took 2 months and still not here so I had no choice but to buy what they had in stock. Sometimes u win some.
The 35 weight oil is a big improvement. The evader is much more stable, predictable, bottoms out less and jumps a hell of a lot better. I havent attempted to change spring rates yet cause im kind of lost when it comes to that. Idont even know which ones come on the evader. Can anyone help on this one. One thing at a time but its coming along.

cheers:cool:

Hi Edmonton,

Regarding spring rates, no one I know has been able to find out the actual spring rate number for the Evader springs (someone with a rate guage, please measure them!!). Duratrax makes three sets of Evader springs: soft (white), medium (yellow-stock), and stiff (green). I have had good luck with the white springs, 35wt in back and 30wt in front on our very bumpy/loose track.

benjermaine
07-30-2002, 10:53 AM
hey edmonton ive heard that 1 degree camber, zero toe-in, and the green spring with 35wt oil and normal shock position(midles) works well in the front. 2 degree camber, 2 toe-in, soft white spring and 40wt oil, normal middle shock position for the rear. Also battery spacer in the front with battery all the way back. Try that if u want to my friend has that and it handles like a dream. i just ordered all that stuff the other day from tower.

HEY KITTY,
I ALSO HAD TO DECIDE WHICH RC TRUCK TO BUY AS A FIRST VEHICLE. I WANTED THE EVADER, BUT IT WAS BACK-ORDERED FROM TOWER, SO I BOUGHT THE STAMPEDE. NOW I HAVE AN EVADER TOO. I THINK THE EVADER IS THE BEST DEAL OUT THERE FOR AN ELECTRIC, BECAUSE IT COMES WITH SOME SEVERAL UPGRADES THAT YOU WOULD WANT EVENTUALLY. THE ESC & MOTOR,...THE ALUMINUM SHOCKS,...THE BEARINGS,... AND FUTABA TX ALL ADD UP TO A SWEET DEAL. THERE IS LOTS OF TALK ABOUT PARTS BREAKING, BUT I HAVEN'T HAD TOO MUCH OF THAT. JUST A HUB CARRIER WHEN I RAN FULL SPEED INTO A CEMENT BLOCK. I THINK MOST OF THE BREAKAGE OCCURS DURING HARD LANDINGS. I RARELY GET MINE MORE THAN 2-3 FT. ANY MORE AIR THAN THAT, I'LL GET A PLANE.
THE RUSTLER IS ALSO A GREAT TRUCK,...VERY TOUGH AND VERY UPGRADABLE. THE STAMPEDE IS LIKE A RUSTLER WITH A LIFT KIT...GREAT FOR ROUGH GROUND. GET THE MODEL WITH THE ESC INSTEAD OF THE MECHANICAL SPEED CONTROL.
TRAXXAS HAS BETTER SUPPORT AND PARTS AVAILABILITY THAN DURATRAX. ALL THESE TRUCKS ARE FINE AND YOU CAN MAKE ANY OF THEM GO PLENTY FAST WITH A LITTLE BIT OF $$$$.
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU DECIDE. HAVE TONS OF FUN.

EDMONTON
07-30-2002, 12:15 PM
thanks for the info guys. I might change my front oil to 30 weight but im leaving the rear alone.I returned all the shock positions to original and it seems to do great on my local track. Id like to change the springs to losi springs cause thats what my lhs has in abundance. bye the way, my lhs has boxes and boxes of xxt parts and everything ive tried so far fits. The parts are cheaper than duratrax parts and some of it I can get in graphite. The control arms are next. My truck hasnt been plagued with reliability problems since. Anyway can someone find out the spring rate please.

cheers:D

Time to change the front tires. I have a set of MT Mesh front rims already, but I don't know what tires to get. I drive on a mixture of asphalt, gravel road, dirt, cement, and grass.

Should I just buy another set of the stock ribbed tires or would I be better off to put something like Road Hawgs on the front?

So, I've decided to buy an Evader. I'll probably get it from Tower as it's the cheapest I've found.
Anyway what else exactly should I get? I'll probably get two batteries to start. I'am thinking good 3000 mah ones. Any thoughts? I am looking for a long run time. What about a charger? Thanks!

07-30-2002, 01:56 PM
Kitty, The evader is a better deal. It comes with bearings, aluminum shocks, esc, universals, etc. And the evader stock goes 22mph,I believe the e-maxx goes that same speed too. oh yea, a better looking body and a rebuildable motor.

datamike, All the 3000 batteries on tower are expensive, stormer hobbies sells smc 3000's for 45$ a piece, and a good charger to charge them is the dynamite vision peak plus, by getting this stuff you will be getting the most run time possible. BTW,those batteries and charger are not available at towerhobbies.

benjermaine
07-30-2002, 02:08 PM
hey datamike if you have the money get the MRC Superbrain 959. You can adjust voltage and you can charge all types of batterys. thats what i have and it charges my racers edge 3000 mah battery great. hope that helps.also deffinetely get the aluminum bulkhead for your first hop-up. you wont regret it.

well I blew my first idler gear. What a mess. I took it apart and to my surprise I dont think I have to replace anything else. The diff looks alright but Iguess thats cause I tighten my diff religiously.
Anyhow, does anyone know the spring rate of the stock springs. I need a starting point before I attempt to change em.

Has anyone put a xxxt body on a evader. I ordered one today but I cant remember if there were any other modifications to do other than post hole locations.

what type of grease should I put in the diff case and stuff after I clean it all?

What slipper was compatible with the evader? was it the t3? Are there any differences or modifications?

Cheers :D

HEY DATAMIKE,
TRY OUT THE MRC SUPER BRAIN 959. ABOUT $45.00 FROM TOWER. IT'S A GOOD CHARGER FOR THE MONEY. SPEND ANOTHER 10-20$ AND GET THE INTELLIPEAK. IT HAS A COOLING FAN BUILT IN. 2400 BATTS WILL GIVE YOU PLENTY OF RUN TIME FOR ALOT LESS$$.
I'D RATHER HAVE A REALLY GOOD CHARGER THAN A HIGH DOLLAR BATTERY. THE CHARGER CAN MAKE EVEN A SPORT BATTERY PERFORM WELL.

Well guys, it's down to three choices for me - Evader, Rustler or Stampede. I'll be checking out all the details and do a side-by-side comparison of the three, but I am leaning more towards the Evader.

brazilnut: Thank you for replying. I appreciate your advice, as well as your response to datamike regarding chargers and batteries.

WhoKnowsWho: Thanks for the tip on that one! I wouldn't mind a scratch n' dent purchase, as I'll be spending a bit more on a few upgrade parts either right off or not long afterwards. The upgrades I have in mind are a little bit faster motor and a decent ESC (no MSCs for me) followed by, of course, other upgrades to help keep it all in one piece.

jdm3849: Much appreciation to you for the recommendation and the quick specs. A better looking body is definitely on my list. I'll keep the stock body on until I learn how to handle the truck better (I got used to non-propo playing with Bit Char-Gs heh). For sure, I'd like to find a baja beetle type body. I've owned two real bajas and miss them both terribly (last one got totalled from behind and left me with some permanent injuries). Thanks also for your advice to datamike on batteries and charger, as it is helping me as well.

Lastly, thanks to some of you for good advice on other parts and tweaking advice you've posted in here. I should have my "wild money" cheque within the week so I have a little work to do in making a final decision.

You guys are great! :)

I would go for the Evader, it sounds like most of its flaws are being fixed now. I have seen how a new traxxas is on a track, not to impressive at all. THey blow out yoke's all the time, and need a fe wupgrades to keep competetive.

Novak has some great ESC's, they are the company to go with for them. If yo uare looking for a radio, the JR XR3 is also a great radio, which I use, lots of features such as senseability adjustment, trims, SED's, dual rates, third channel, lots more.

That seems to be the consensus around here regarding the frame breakage. Thanks for the reminder on that one.

I'll have to look up info on the JR XR3. I could use a third channel for an idea that's been bouncing around inside my head for a while. On your features list, do you mean sensitivity adjustment? I definitely would go with one that has a sensibility adjustment, though hehehe I like the idea of dual rate, as that would help me considering that I don't have the greatest coordination around. I forgot what SEDs are, but that's what search engines are for, no? Novak is one of the companies on my short list for ESCs, so that's pretty cool.

Thanks, pudder!

KITTY,
I'M GLAD TO HELP IF I CAN. I'M FAIRLY NEW AT THIS TOO, SO I KNOW ABOUT THE GUESSING GAME THAT GOES WITH A FIRST CHOICE. THE EVADER HAS MY VOTE, THOUGH. MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE EXTRAS THAT YOU GET.
TRY A CHAMELEON 2 PRO MOTOR. IT WILL GET YOU AHEAD OF THAT E-MAX, AND WILL WORK WELL WITH YOUR FACTORY ESC. (AND THE FACTORY GEARS AS WELL). AND IT'S REBUILDABLE.

WhoKnowsWho
07-30-2002, 09:11 PM
If Tekin was still around, they could be another ESC option. :(If you don't have the money for the XR3, an XR2 loses the 3rd channel but has plenty of features. I have enjoyed mine.

07-31-2002, 11:35 AM
Edmonton, yes it was the T3 slipper, they are identical, besides the T3's being better of course. :p

For the diff on my T3 manual, it says to use Stealth Diff Lube, so order a little thing of that, and for the thrust bearing it says to use black grease, though the diff lube can be substituted on the thrust.

Benjermaine-Soldering those connectors on is pretty basic. I have never soldered them on, I took one off though.

I think you just have to tin your wire and connector where you are soldering to, then apply some more solder, heat up up and solder the wire on, but dont hold the wire there too long because it could melt the plastic on the connector. I think there may be shrinkwrap to put over the wires on the connectors too, be sure to slip a little piece over the wire before you solder.

Another thing you will want to be sure to do is to solder the male connectors onto your ESC, and the female ones onto the batts, this way the batts won't have any exposed metal to short out if it had the male connectors on it and hit a metal surface.

And then there is the obvious, figure out which one you will do + and which one - so when you connect them, you won't be sparking.

I have an Evader for sale or trade. If you know anyone who wants one let me know. It is in the B/S/T Forum under "sell/trade for nitro." I want to get into nitro so I'm getting rid of some electric stuff. LMK.

Dan, your gonna be sorry you sold it, why not just keep it? i'm 14 and I still had enought money to buy a X-NT while still keeping my evader.

Prinler, Get the duratrax esc. I have had the futaba controller and it started on fire 3 times, it also was getting hot with a 17 turn, enough to shut it down. I had it geared 13/84 in my pede.

Datamike, defeinately go for 3000's. you do not have to discharge them and you can safely run them more times a day then 2400's.
it costs 40$ for a un-matched pack at tower of 2400's and it costs 45$ for a matched pack of 3000's at stormer.

that will cost about 90$

If you are not on a budget and still want reverse, LRP super reverse, trinity p-94 14turn double.
That will cost you about 160$

If your on a budget and want forward only, duratrax streak esc, trinity speed gems pro 17 turn double amber.
that will cost about 70$

If you are not on a budget and want forward only, novak dually, trinity p-94 14turn double.
that will cost about 150$
