Hey all, Im new to these forms but not to airbrushing Lexan bodies. I've been using a Badger Cresendo airbrush for some time on my bodies and Im getting to the point where I want another airbrush for real fine work. Im looking at the Tamiya Spray Work HG SF Airbrush. It has a 2mm nozzle and is supposed to be used for fine detailing type work. Does anyone have any experience with these airbrushes? and if you do could you feel me in with your thoughts? Thanks in advance:)

You sure its a 2mm nozle? My big Gravity feed sata is only a 1.4

If you are looking for a good brush look at iwata.

http://www.coastairbrush.com

They sell those, other brands, as well as parts and about any type of paint you could want. ONly downside is must clean with laquer thinner. Also have some nice paint jobs maybe get inspired =)

Yeah my bad the nozzle is .2mm not 2mm.

Im also looking at a Iwata eclipse. The problem is I dont want another airbrush that is comparable to my cresendo. I really dont know which is better but I'm pretty sure most people prefer the Iwata eclipse over the cresendo from what ive read in forms and talking to other people who paint bodies.

Well if the eclipse is being compared to the one you have and you want something better look at the HP series. I have had Badgers, Paasches, and Thayer/Chandler, and just about everything else out there. I use my HP-C on a daily basis, and if I'm working on something with a lot of different colors I will hook up the manifold with an HP-C, and HP-A, and a paasche VL. In other words I live by the HP series. They are a little more money than the eclipses but they are definitely worth it. If you really want to spend the money and be able to airbrush the bible in 12 point brush script look at the microns, but they are really overkill.

Parr0thead,

I have used both the Crescendo as well as the Eclipse. The Crescendo gives you three needles which is fine, but i feel it is unneccessary. Its #2 needle is comparable to the Eclipse's needle as far as spray pattern.(about .5mm) How the two brushes feel when you use them is not comparable. As soon as i picked up an Eclipse, i was sold.

For Rc Painting especially with using Createx of Faskolor, Eclipse is the way to go. The Tamiya Series brushes do use a .2mm but you will have problems using Createx with this brush because the paint is just too thick. For dropshadows and actual very thin lines, a .2mm needle is ideal. You'd have to thin the paint down to use it, but it works well.

What it comes down to is unless you are doing murals on these bodies, an Eclipse of a Revolution would be fine.

Thanks Charlie_B and dropkick. Your input is well recieved and I thank you for taking the time to post.

Yes Charlie thats exactly why I'm looking into getting a new brush. I want to expand my mural work capabilities. As it stands now its very difficult for me to get a spray pattern from my cresendo that is fine enough and reliable enough to do any real detailed work. Im able to paint two tone faces and skulls on my bodies but Im to the point now where I want to start adding more depth and color to my faces and skulls.

Basically I want to have a good all round brush, which I already own (my cresendo possibly an eclipse in the future since I hear nothing but awsome things about them), and another brush for really fine detailing type work (Tamiya Spray Work HG SF or as dropkick suggests Iwatas HP series)

I generally only use Faskolor paint on my bodies. I know thinning these paints with water isnt a good Idea. I can buy reducer at my LHS but it comes in a small bottle. Is there anything else you guys use to thin faskolor with out deteriorating the sticking agent in the paint? If not is there a place where I can get a large bottle of reducer? If you had a choice which brush would you guys go with, the Tamiya Spray Work HG SF or the Iwata HP series

I want a brush that is reliable enough to spray consistent fine lines

Remember this is for fine detailing on primarly lexan car bodies.
I plan on spending $100-$150

Thanks again guys for your input. Parr0thead

The two options you have are either getting the Tamiya Superfine or the HPC with a .2mm needle. IMO, the Micron(.18mm) might be too expensive and overkill. Either brush will work very well for you.

You can buy a big bottle of reducer at coastairbrush or better yet, thin the paint down with denatured alchohol. Thats what i use to get the really subtle drop shadows. Good Luck man!

Awsome, Youve been extremely helpful. Looks like Ill be using denatured alcohol to thin my paint. Also just wanted to say I checked out your link you left on one of your posts and I admire your work. those are really some of the best works of art Ive seen ever blown on a body. I'll strive to be that good someday.
Keep up the inspiring work. :D

I use a iwata eclipse for the details and a badger anthem for larger areas. The iwata is one of the best all around airbrushes.

I hope your right airbrush1. I just ordered a Iwata HP-C with the .2 mm nozzle conversion. Cant wait to use it. My next step is to obtain a Iwata eclipse to replace my Badger Cresendo.
Never thought painting would be so addicting.

Thanks for your reply:)
