Do you like simple, single/ double colored paint jobs, or complex paint schemes? I personally like simple ones, I like my cars having a realistic look to them. It just gets so annoying when at the track or LHS, showing up with my car with a blue body with a single silver stripe (RX7) and everyone thinking that I must not be able to paint. Just curious.

i like the simple ones too... the ones with crazy paint schemes, to me, most of the time come out crappy. I have 3 bodies, a skyline, a trans am and a saleen s7, and the s7 is the only one with 2 colors, black and silver.

Most of the time I like more complex paint jobs. But to me, simple or complex, the paint job has to flow with the car and look to me like it could go on a real car. I don't car for most single color paint jobs because I find them pedestrian. You can walk out on the street and all you will see is single color paint jobs. Most everyone has seen this, but it's still one of my favorites because I love the combination of colors and design and if I had a Skyline, I'd want this paint job on it.

Complex for buggies, monster trucks, and Stratus

Simple for everything else

I like complex stuff for running bodies for the simple fact that I can see it better on the track & differentiates it from everything else.

If the body's going straight to my shelf, then definitely a simple, street looking scheme.

I like a nice 2-3 color scheme. The flames and magma are ok. The schemes that look like one from a low riding truck magazine with 5 different neon colors I dislike. I agree one color is a little too plain. The only one colors I like are ones that look good with decals like the WRC Subaru.

Nice paint jobs guys. I do truly appreciate complex paintjobs, only God knows how many times I've screwed up on them  , but i still favor my simple one or two color schemes.

I prefer simple, realistic designs. The style of design used for concourse cars is where it's at. Check out CONTENDER's bodies in the Concourse forum. They put all the other cheezy paint jobs to shame. Complex tribal/flames/checkers look too Martha Stewart to me.

The day that flames go out of style, I will rejoice.

Simple all the way. Esp. on cars that I love. Take this SS for example. When I see it with complex Paint jobs for some reason I'm just not impressed. I know I could never paint that well but still.

calvin: You have to do a Camaro body!

I'm hoping on getting a Sport and getting Super rims, with a Black SS body. Since it wont be driveable I think I'll make light buckets.

I think much of it is in the design and execution. One color is usually dull and bland looking, so he ups it with a creative twist on a classic design. This guy is Kevin Maynes and he does a great job at both simple designs and complex.

Simple

This is a great complex scheme. Everything is paint but the headlights & window trim. It looks like a real size sponsored race car. Brilliant work.

calvin, lol no one's ever said I sound like a college professor before. post up your red stratus, I think that is a great example of a simple design (that's not simple to do). I still think that would look great on a real car.

Calvin3-What size is the f150 body? I go  every time I see it. You should have won the best paint comp#3! I was with you all the way on that one. Is there any chance you would want to sell it? I could give you $$.
Hauntedmyst-I havn't seen any of your absolute stunning bodies for awhile. What happened? Seriously though you must be the best body painter ever. Do you still run that custom paint website? If so, how much would it be to do flames like calvin's on a protoform (either that or proline) chevy silverado body?
Thanks a lot all! I will have a pic of my HPI nissan skyline by tomorrow-tell my if you like when its up! L8

As for me, I kinda like designs in between simple and complex. As hauntedmyst mentioned, I think it is all on the painting execution of the body. Sometimes I like to airbrush far out designs on my body, at others I like to just use spray cans and paint simple lines and curves.

Here is an example of a body I consider to be in between simple and complex, what do you guys think?

ToxicSoup
04-20-2003, 09:20 PM

Rahxephon: Nice Job!!! I love the fades in the design yet overall it looks relitively monotone making it complex yet simple. I have been thinking of doing something almost like that. That to me is nice, original looking, paint job. The best part is IT'S A MICRO:eek: What shades of paint did you use?

My opinion on the "simple or complex" thing is: Race cars are meant to attract attention especially when they zoom by you in a blur. Sponsors are a neccessary evil in real racing so sometimes the paint scheme is all about the product. But the best teams always have an identifiable "look" thats what makes racing exciting to watch....cool looking cars!!!

As for real life street cars. Anything more than 2 colors or with any type of "writing" other than the stock insignia badges is pretty lame IMHO. The exception to this rule would be "show cars" and , of course, the classic flamed muscle cars and hot rods!!!

Face it Flames will NEVER die...but that is just my opinion:)

DoubleA thank you for the compliment and insightful comment.

The paints that I used were all from faskolor:
1.faspearl blue
2.fasblack
3.fas-silver
4.faswhite
5.fasfluourescent gold.
6. faspearlblue mixed with faspearl violet.

mpyacfo,

Thanks for the kind words. One of the reasons I like this forum so much, there are tons of painters who do amazing work and I am always learning more. I have just painted a few bodies which have been posted through out the forum and I have 4 more masked up waiting for inspiration to hit me. lol. I still paint just not as often. If you want one like calvin's, he's the best person to do work like his, email him and I am sure he will be happy to give you an estimate! If you want something different, shoot me a pm!

well since i kno everyone has been waiting patiently for my answer, here it is.

i'd choose a contrasting design that matches with the wheels and decals i plan on putting onto the body. Much like my RSX down there. It's got to balance out. Ask any art teacher and they'll say u need more contrast in ur drawing and what nots (unless u nailed it on the spot). As u can tell i did the hood white to stand out of the crowd.
