Welcome everyone to the Third Street/Race Competition!!
The Street/Race paint competition will be open for entrees for two weeks and will close at Midnight April 30th.
Each month we will hold a Best Paint and Street/Race competition. If you cant get your bodies done this month, dont worry there will be plenty more to come!!
Restrictions: All entrees to this competition must be replicas of cars appearing in a movie. A few examples are, Bond cars, Fast and the Furious, anything with cars. One of the judging criteria will be how well the car mimics its movie counterpart!
The winning bodies may appear in Radio Control Car Action or R/C Nitro!!
RULES for Street/Race competition:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters are welcome!)
5) Please refrain from insulting bodies in anyway.
6) Must fall within this month's restrictions (April restrictions: Movie cars) 7) Only 2 entrees per person.
8) Bodies should be painted within the last 4 months.
9) Bodies must be of a "street" look or be painted in a race car style.
Each submission must include the following:
Body manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Movie the car appeared in.
And of course, a body.
This month DoubleA will be judging the Street/Race paint competition.
Each body will be judged by the following criteria (1-bad, 10-excellent):
Detail (score 1-10) (decals, grills, mirrors, roll cages, if its on a real car you score points here)
Likeness to car in movie (score 1-10)
Execution (score 1-10)
The photo and background will not be judged. All that is needed is a clean photo that clearly shows the body.
Each month we will place some restriction on all entrees.
April restrictions:
Best Paint: must use 3 colors.
Best street/race: Imports!! (European and Asian)
GOOD LUCK

Im a massive Fast and the Furious fan, heres my supra full with imitation Bomex body kit. you've no idea how many times i've watched the DVD in slo-mo and paused it to get the detail! Every decal was designed from scratch on the computer :D
Details:
Tamiya 190mm Toyota Supra bodyshell to fit my TL-01 chassis
Competition Orange RC256 Spray paint
Precut window masks, and hand made light masks used
Movie: Fast and the Furious
The car has fully functioning lights with its own home made circuit board to control the indicators, plus it has a set of orange neon bulbs underneath. I tried to capture every detail even down to the toyota badge upside down at the rear as on the real car!

I agree with spoolin, most tfatf replicas dont look too good, but urs is nice, with the nice wing, th elights and the fact that its a tamiya. :)

Phil, Great car, nicely detailed and way to go starting the comp out with a bang! I never saw the movie, what are the cut outs on the hood? Were those in the movie? For a grill?
race2c
04-17-2003, 05:45 PM
HM--the cut outs on the hood were sorda for air intake onto the engine in the movie.. THey were in the movie in basically the same way..
philkelly85--Did you even do the interior to the movie as well?
P.S. GREAT CAR!!!!

That is a great looking car!!!! You did a great job on it!! How did you make the stickers? And what type of sticker sheet did you use?

Nice job Phil! I have a feeling that there will be quite a few entries of cars from tfatf. If so they will have their work cut out for them. I think I'll rent the movie again just to reaquaint myself with the details.
Can we have a shot of the rear?

sweeet job man, i like the body kit alot!
Now if only u can find those Tamiya chrome headlight buckets from their blitz supra, it would be even more realistic..

Thanks for the compliments everyone :D :D i spent a lot of time on this car. I used spare mesh from one of my motorbike models for the hood, and for the other less dense mesh, i got some from my Dad's workplace :) The Bomex kit is designed as a one off from Polymorph. Polymorph consists of granules of plastic that melt together in boiling water so that you can mould them into anything you want and paint it! Its incredibly light but can take 815 Newtons worth of impact before breaking!! To make the neons i put 2 LEDs in each end of an ink cartridge and layered half of it with foil.
In answer to Race2c i havent done the interior because the circuit boards attached to the bodyshell would interfere.
Also every single sticker on the car was designed from scratch by me on Microsoft Paint! I went onto all the websites of Bomex, Vis Racing sports, Dazz, Modern Image etc to download their logo as a basis.
Baller Stratus is there anyway to see light buckets and interiors on the net then order them? coz my LHS is miles away already and dont stock these finer details but can put orders through.
Thanks again everyone for commenting on my pride and joy :D
Cheers, Phil
P.S. heres the shot of the rear as requested :)

WOW! It will take a lot to compete with that. Full lights and all. philkelly85, I think you scared away the competition with that materpiece.

Your Toyota Logo on the back of the car is upsidedown. Or do you want it like that?
Its VERY nice!!!
philkelly85
04-18-2003, 02:50 PM
Yep its supposed to be like that, when bomex take a car and adapt it with their own body kit, they turn the badge upside down as a sort of trademark as well as their logo on the car.
Thanks for the comments

It would be awesome to see a gone in 60 seconds replica. Too bad there aren't any real muscle r/c bodies. The el camino is cool, but the fake engine adds too much weight.

Has anyone seen the “Optimus Prime” Yokomo truck that is the May Reader’s Ride of the Month? That IMO is the coolest replica to date. Unfortunately the owner is probably not on this board to enter it into the comp. If you haven’t seen it check it out!! I agree with Steve that there is more to life than FATF. I hope there are people putting finishing touches on other entries otherwise at this rate everyone will finish in the top 3. I thought someone would have at least made the green Eclipse or white Jetta from FATF??
If anyone is up to a challenge, Mad Max’s “Interceptor” would be a possibility with a Parma body and maybe some other model parts. You could even get the Road Warrior action figure (rare find) to fit inside the cockpit! That would be cool! I think Kyosho actually produced this body in their mini-Z line.

Well, then I guess that I got 2nd and philkelly got 1st. That was easy! I really thought there would be more entries...kinda sucks. You should make the next comp. Stars and stripes that would be cool because I just painted a silvia with two striped down the middle.

Well this was a tough competition and it has come down to these 2 cars:
mpyacfo: Nice job with only your second body! One big thing to fix in the future, the rear wheel wells didn’t look quite right. Sometimes it’s better to not follow the “fender lines”. Instead, just cut wherever your wheels are. But overall a good replica car!! Paint on…
Detail..............5....The wing and window trim would have helped here.
Likeness..........8....The kyosho orange was a little off I thought.
Execution........6....The nicest paint job can be easily hacked by bad body trimming.
philkelly85: Awesome!!!! I can appreciate the time you must have spent on this car. Like you said, you must be a fan!! The only imperfection I was able to find was the headlights in PIC3 don’t seem to be even left to right. Other than that, congratulations on a job well done!! I especially like the night shots. Too bad we couldn’t see the orange neons better.
Detail..............10....The lights are awesome and the body work is WICKED!!!
Likeness...........9....The color is perfect and the rims are very close (Tamiya’s Enzo Ferrari rims would be just right judging by the picture)
Execution.........9....The head light placment and left side hood grill are the only imperfections
So congratulations to philkelly on a hard fought battle. Maybe your early showing scared away the competition?? In any case have fun judging the next Street/Race comp as I had fun judging this one!!
And to everybody else KEEP POSTING!!!!!!:D

Thanks to doubleA and everyone for their comments! :D
I did spend a long time and money on this body and im glad it paid off! I love painting bodies and enjoy the challenge of capturing every detail of the bodyshell. To top it off it looks soo sweet when racing it!
Being a massive fast and the furious fan ive ordered a dodge charger and a Mazda Rx7 and the Mazda has just arrived! :) I hope these bodies will come out just as well.
Really looking forward to judging the next street race competition, i hope there are a few more entries than this time!
Keep posting pics everyone
