use some cheesecloth to get the grain

try using a fine tipped brush and hand paint thin wavey lines with a medium brown, then airbrush tan or light brown over that.

or you can just get that simulated wood sticker from the hardware store. Painting wood grain that small is a real pain.

Better hardware stores will have a wood graining tool. It normally is used to put a wood grain look on steel doors. Ask in the paint sections.

I'd also recommend the faux wood-grain shelf paper: It's cheap and easy to apply.

Hey, that sounds really cool! I just wonder how it will turn out on THIS truck...as it has the "wood grain" drawn into the lexan. I think I may try to color in the grain lines, as they are a little deeper than the rest of the "wood", and then try cheese cloth over that...This body is a '34 Ford, and I'd really like to see it out bashing in the strip mines someday, but it's really getting to be a pain! LOL The front end is so narrow, I'm going to have to fab some kind of mounts.

I used to do this on custom paint for boats. You should expirament to get the right consistency for your first coat, that's what does the grain.

You'll have to tape or clamp the body in position because you need both hands. You need to take some black and thin it WAY down so that is sprays on wet. Wrap a piece of saranwrap around one finger just before spraying. Make sure the saran wrap has wrinkles, so it's not smooth.

When ready, spray the surface and before it can dry drag your covered finger through the laquer in the direction of the grain. You only get one chance, don't go back and forth or it will screw it up. The wrinkles in the saran wrap will cause just the right smear in the black to emulate wood grain. It should be very transparent and you should barely see the "grain."

Back it up with the wood color of your choice, then back that with silver.

A buddy of mine did this by accident. But it came out really cool and was the easiest wood looking effect...though he didn't mean it to be...LOL

Sprayed black spray webbing acrylic paint and backed it with brown.

yeah it didn't look exactly like wood but the effect was good enough that everyone who saw it immediately thought it looked like wood.

I know its cheating but you can use picture glue and contact paper in the wood grain color from your local Home Depot.

yeh or just use plain old "faux wood", buy some for cheap and paste the stuff on, you can't get more realistic unless you use real wood!

well, maybe i shouldn't tell y'all my secret but what the hay.... ;)

paint it pactra white. now go buy red, orange and brown sharpies. make orange streaks on some of the strips. now make red streaks where you didn't put the orange. finally finish by making wood grain with knots with the brown marker. Voila! It looks pretty good IMO and everyone who has seen it. They thought it was airbrushed. LOL!!!
