Charlie,
I've been wondering this for a while. Did you chop up a skull master stencil or just duplicate the small skulls on stencil material? Or is it some other technique of making little skull master masks, and applying them. Anywhoo, you do it very well.

Charlie,
I don't even really have to say it, but here goes anyway. Wow, I really like the colors. They balance out each other very well. And the Diablo character is top notch as always. Great work!

Thanx Haunted and gang!
Dropkicked-i just use a plain skullmaster stencil and do a very light coat so i do not get hard definite lines on the eyes and the mouth. i then freehand the rest.

its too good for compliments!!!!
question, about how long does it take you to finish a body like that? im curious
charlieB
04-21-2003, 09:34 PM
i think it took me about 5-6 hours...since i rarely have time to paint rccars anymore, i don't get to finish bodies i start the same day. So, when i do get to paint bodies, it is a treat for me!!!

now is that actual painting time or does it include prep work masking cutting design?

WOW - So far beyond my ability. Imagine the type of paint job you could lay down on a 1:1 car. With the fine detail ability you have, I'm sure you could do some really killer full scale paint.

Very nice Work Charlie!!!!
For your shadows, you noted that you used a little black backer.
How do you get the shadow to be so transparent using black.
I have been testing by using a mix of blue and black, but seems to be too dark. I am looking for that dry "charcoal" look for shadowing. any hints/tips?
As Always.....Incredible work Charlie B!!!!...Love it!!!!!:D

DkAngel-I use an over reduced black depending on the paints i use. For Createx, i reduce it with denatured alchohol. for Spaz Stix, i use regular paint thinner.

thanx parrothead.
I have learned to streamline my painting to basically have one layer of masking. Then, from there, peel n paint, peel n paint.
As for other stuff..id love to paint a full size car...just do not have the time to do one while im still at school. Maybe when i graduate in December.
catch ya soon,

Yeah I pretty much paint the same way.
1. single layer of mask
2. draw / cut graphics
3. peel n paint, peel n paint
or in most cases paint n strip (bang head agaist wall) paint n strip.
Only thing I find difficult with this process is painting shadows across two to three defined lines or colors.
For example. In the pic I attached the shadow for the first purple/green spike goes from a blue section over a orange stripe then back across blue. For me I have to paint the shadow in two different steps.
once while I was painting the orange stripe and another while I was painting the blue section. This method is difficult to blen the shadow into itself. Do you have a easier, simpler method?
If so Id really appriciate your advise. I find shadowing the most difficult part of painting other than freehand work.
Oh and the face on the side is complements to you. I saw one on your site and I thought Id give it a whirl. Hope you dont mind. If you do I wont duplicate.
hope this isnt to confusing.
thanks in advance

Parothead-
"or in most cases paint n strip (bang head agaist wall) paint n strip." haha! that's classic!
for the shadow, unfortunately, the pain-staking job of doing it that way is the ONLY way. one trick i use is to keep the drop shadows as thins as possible. that way, if you mess up while in between graphics, you can always make the drop shadows thicker later on as you go. Doing over lapping graphics is hard enough. to make them believeable, the shadowing has to be done right. as long as you remember that shadows are not opaque and are very translucent, then the more beleiveable the illusion is.
As far as doing the faces, etc..go for it! you might even come up with an even better face! i am not worried about being copied...we all get inspiration from each other therefore share!!!

Hey Charlie. One more question
I've read on this post and others that you use denatured alcohol or rubbing alcohol to thin faskolor/createx paints. Ive tried using denatured and rubbing alcohol to thin faskolor and createx paints and all it does is clot up like I added actual thinner to it. Am I doing something wrong? or do you strain your paint to remove all the clots that are left? Im really curous cuz I just got my new Iwata HP-C and I need to thin the paint in order to use it properly
Thanks in advance for any advise

i am not sure why it is clotting up...i only thin down the opaque black and opaque white paint...i generally do not thin metallics or pearls because they are generally thicker paints. I only thin black and white for shadow/highlight purposes..as for pearls. i leave them alone.

Hmmmmm. I’ve only tried to thin down opaque black and charcoal with no success. One thing I do know tho is alcohol repels water and faskolor is water based. I haven’t tried thinning down createx paint, only faskolor, but there the same paint with just a different label (and cost) so there should be no difference as far as ingredients right?
Don’t mean to be a nuisance. I’m just trying to learn from someone who’s knowledgeable and has success thinning with alcohol.
Thanks again Charlie for you help and inspiration!

Charlie - Yesterday I tried thinning Fascoat clear with alcohol. I wanted to thin down the clear to mix with flake. I added the alcohol to the clear and it clotted big time. HELP!
charlieB

I am not sure why you guys are having clotting problems..i will have to try to mix my paint a different way to see if it clots..very strange!

yendor and parrot: i know exactly what your talking about, my paint does it as well. you pour the paint in then the alch then the paint like globs up right into some twisted mass of black
it happend to me then i was like ahh screw it and shook it up and it sprayed perfect!! perfect shadows every time and all the clots wear gone its was very odd but it works. just mix it and youll be fine.
by the way im using the createx auto-air black home depot denatured alch and an iwata hp-c
charlieB
04-28-2003, 10:48 PM
I tried to mix it and yes, they do glob up, but try shaking it up like Extreme said..i store the paints i have mixed in bottles and label them so i can use them again. When these waterbased paints are shaken or mixed together, they flow much smoother.

At what ratio do you mix the black faskolor/createx paints with denatured alcohol. 1:1 2:1 or is it just a good guess?
Yendor
04-29-2003, 01:21 PM
I'll try shaking it next time. It was a total glob that looked beyond help.
charlieB
04-29-2003, 03:39 PM
actually, i mix it per cup...on my HPC, i add half a color cup of black, i'll add three to four drops and see. I'll keep on adding drops untill i get the translucency i want.
RoachRacing

i think i understand, just add a little at a time until you get the right look.
Thanks

What PSI are you spraying at to get such a "fogging" on the shadowing?? High to get a fine mist, or at the recommended PSI for the paint? (25-45PSI) ?
charlieB
04-29-2003, 08:40 PM
between 25 and 30 psi.

Bringing this one back from the dead to ask again about the shadowing mixture of paint.
I tried the mixing of denatured alcohol and fascolor black and i got EXTREME clogging. I was just wondering if i am doing this right or what. anyone else's opinion on this would be great.

it will get clumpy..just have to shacke it and spray away..it foes settkle, but you get a great effect!
