Better in what specific way(s)? You've listed an entry level FM radio, a mid-level FM radio, and a high end FM radio from three completely different companies.. apples and oranges unless you're looking for something or can get a good deal on one...

What are you looking for? Begginer? Mid-range? Top end? The MX-3 is an awsome mid to top end radio. I have an M8, and that rocks. I think its better that the lynx 3d, especially now that the crystalles module came out. (mines in the mail :D )

i would recommend none of those, but the JR XS3, the synthesized system WILL save you money, crystals for FM radios run about $30 for a set, and its nice to have a few sets when you race and that money can quickly add up. for that reason, spend the extra money on the synthesized system, and it comes with better servos which you could sell on ebay if you dont need them.

Check out the new Hitec CRX that will be coming out soon. Its supposed to be better in every way from the old Lynx 3D.

MX-3
What about the Futaba PDF-X? I got one, I haven't used it yet but it does give a very high quality impression (besides, I love the looks of it - clean and simple, not toyish like the Lynx for example).
I've been wondering why I don't see it come up alot in discussions about preferd radio, is there a reason, or is it just a matter of brand/model awareness?
I think that for 120$, it's good value (previously it was 180$, with two useless wimpy servos, now it's 60$ less but without servos at all).

I personally think all radios should come sans servos, almost all the time, people dont use the included servos in a radio package.

I have the JR XS3 and it is a great radio for the money. :) Why radios used replaceable crystals in the first place is beyond me. Imagine driving along in your car with a hand full of crystals for all your favorite FM radio stations and taking one out and installing another everytime you want to change channels.

thats how it used to be for CB radio users before the FCC permitted synthesized frequency modulators.

Ok i've owned
Futaba 3pdf
Airtronics M8
Airtronics M8 Limited
Hitec Lynx 3d
Bang for the buck 3pdf around 100 used
Best radio money no object M8 limited only cause it's backlit.
Otherwise i recommend lynx 3d inexpensive loaded with features can be optioned with spectra module cheaper tha m8 with switch.
I've seen used lynx 3d go for 200 with xxtra and spectra. just the m8 switch and xxtra used go for 150 and the you still have to get an m8.

The range should be identical for both models since they're both the same FM transmitter, only difference is that one uses crystals to control frequencies and the other uses a sythesizer module to do the same.
As for your other questions, since these are of a subjective nature you should go down to a hobby shop that sells these radios and actually try holding one to see if you like it.

the xs3 has an output of 130 Mw and the xr3i has 190Mw output. and there is no shop in my are that has jr radios, only futaba magnum sports and jrs. so is the plastic simler to futaba, or say traxxas's.

I have an XR2 and I love it. It feels like very solid and is semi fuel resistent. I have held an XR3i and it feels even better (more contoured grip).

thanks for the info LosiGuy, but anybody know how that would effect the range in a semiurban enviroment?

I've had both the XR3 and now an XS3. I've driven both as far as I dare to and have never had any glitches or range problems with either of them.
I really like JR Radios, and I have no complaints about their construction of feel. I love the synthesized XS3. It's nice to go to the track, and when they ask what frequency you run, you can say "Whatever is open." :)

thank you, Vmax. i don't do a whole lot of racing, no track in my area. but how durable are the crystals, i bash preety hard so if they break fairly easyly i would like to know.

I've never had problems with JR crystals failing. I've run a variety of offroad and onroad. Just make sure that the receiver is well padded and secured.
One thing about the Synthesized reciever is that the frequency is changed by turning "pots" on the front. I was a bit concerned about getting dirt and grim in stuck in the pots. If the vehicle you run doesn't have a reciever box you'll want to use receiver cover of some type.
