Finally found a TA02 that I really want at a reasonable price. :D
The box is not in a good shape, but who's going to complain about that in a US$125 kit.

Hey guys,
my friend bought a TA02. What we find is that it makes a lot of noise and the driveshaft tends to wobble a lot.
My friend's running the TA02 without the driveshaft because he enjoys drifting, but also because the driveshaft seems to cause a lot of drag.
Suggestions?

You find 02 parts on ebay...
as for the shaft... you need the short hardened propshaft... that stock shaft is no good and will wobble as you say... again you can find it on ebay;)

My TA02 still runs fine, never had any problems with the prop shaft.
I think my lhs has better parts support for 02s than most modern day touring cars. I've never seen a losi, AE(except B4), xray, yokomo.

You can add spacers inside the shocks... you must take apart the shocks to add them in... if you still have the trees for the shocks there should be a 5mm(approx.) spacer on each... you must have 4 altogether...;)

Anyone race the trophy trucks? We have a class of them that race here and I was looking to see who else ran them, to share some set up tips.
I am running Associated buggy front brown springs all around, 50wt oil, and #2 pistons for a clay track.
Our class is a spec class, any gearing and the sport tuned motor is allowed though. Along with ball bearings and reverse since we don't alllow marshalls and run 8 minute races.

Yep. The only time you are dead in the water is if it lands on its roof, which is very rare. Most of the time they find their wheels, or lay on their sides, which turning the wheel and hitting reverse flips them back over quickly. Its the most fun I have ever had racing.

I just recently joined a race in my area 4 times already using a P2K2 pro motor. I would like to ask anywone here if there is a way to use 26T pinion or higher? I'm using 25T pinion and 66T spur but i still can't catch up with other racers using mostly TC3 cars.

That's as low as you can gear a TA02 I think, unless you had a 48 pitch conversion.
TRF Drive Hard
09-25-2003, 04:37 PM
Not sure if you have tried... place the motor mount screw in the hole marked "18" i think you should be able to use the 26t pinion... i have not tried it yet but it might work... im looking at the speed tuned gear chart... if my calculations are correct...;)

Kenny T: why do i need a 48 pitch conversion? Is'nt it that TA02 cars use 48 pitch gears already? can u explain more about this?
TA03 Drive Hard: Thanks for your help. Actually i just bought a 26T pinion(by GPM) last night off ebay but the seller is not sure if it is metric or standard. Here's the link and see if you know anything about this:
http://www.stores.ebay.com/lowpricercstore/plistings/list/all/dept10/index.html?col=2&dir=-1
Also i have a new modified aluminum motor mount by GPM which has only 5 holes but it doesnt have gearing chart. According to the seller the holes are 18T to 22T. TA03 do you know about this motor mount by GPM? Hope you or someone here can help me.
Kenny T
09-26-2003, 07:54 AM
Tamiya cars use 42 pitch gears, not 48. SOme company (might be robinson racing) made a 48 pitch conversion, as long as the gears meshed properly you could put any gear ration on it.
That's a good idea TA03 DH, never thought of that, it should work.
About the pinion, it will be useless unless you bought 42 pitch pinion, I think only tamiya makes 42 pitch.

Hey guys, i've had my TA02 since it first came out basicly. It was a Loctite Skyline, my first real RC. I now have a TC3, micro RS4, emaxx, tamiya F1 and a mini Z. Still got the 02 though. Anyway, iam now working on getting it running again but this time as a baja truck. Iam using TC3 rally shocks, HPI super nitro mesh wheels and some proline dirt hog buggy tires. Tower doesnt sell the FRP stuff anymore, so i got out the o'l dremel and cut away some plastic, mostly under the batt. I just cant seem to get rid of that TA02, so i figure i'd have some fun with it. Anyone know of a good place to get parts?

First off it has been quite a while since I've built a car kit. I am building a TA02 and looking at the shock diagram there appears to be 2 black plastic spacers (OF DIFFERENT LENGTHS) that go over the shock shaft inside of the shock body. Am I supposed to put BOTH spacers on the shaft before I insert in into the shock body or do I have a choice of using the shorter spacer for more shock travel and the longer spacer for shorter travel or are BOTH spacers supposed to go together inside the shock during assembly????

I have several TA02's and a FWD my son drves. I enjoy showing up at my brothers house with one 02 in particular to beat up his TC3. I am a better driver than him.
I am always on the look out for rare parts for my car. It started life as the specal racing chassis kit. I have a GPM carbon chassis that runs saddle pack batteries, FRP front and rear stays, aluminum: lower front gear box, front and rear arms, steering knuckles, motor mount, propellor shaft, low friction dampeners etc etc. I just bought about $130.00 of mostly KOSE stuff at a hobb shop in Canada while on a business trip.
Any way I found a very rare front stabilizer kit made by P&C racing. I believe GPM made one that is similar to what I bought. Anyway I have no instructions and can't figure out how to install it.
Can anyne help me?

What is missing is the sway bar... there was nothing else in the packet? what is that long flat piece?
bribar2
09-27-2004, 04:10 AM
There was nothing else in the package. The flat piece is some ort of FRP material, but kind of heavy stuff.
I was trying to make the flat piece mount on the damper stay somehow, but the more I look at it it think it goes like this.....2 hours of staring at this later...
The only holes that line up with anything on the flat piece is the screws that hold the front gear box to the chassis.
I think the two aluminum spacers go under the flat piece and the long screws to screw the flat piece to the chassis just behind the front gear box. (The spacers give clearance for the drive shaft.)
The purple anodized camp things must mount to the top of the steering knuckles. Looks like with a plastic nuckle and stock upper arms, this is the right width to clamp over that assembly. Since I have tamiya aluminum knuckles and adjustable arms, some kit bashing is needed to make this work. Screws hold "balls" to the flat thing and the threaded holes in the top of the purple clamps allow a screw to go up and hold two more "balls".
The turn buckles would tie the flat piece to the purple clamps on the knckles via four "ball stud things".
If so this is truly more of a stabilizer than a "sway bar".
Does this make sense or am I off my rocker? Do you think it is worth mounting if it is designed to eliminate the forward and backward movement of the whole arm/knuckle wheel assembly and not really act as a away bar?

Did the width stay the same? How about the rear? If the 04 arms fit, and they are also the arms for the TL01LA, then TL01 arms should fit the 02 without needing different uprights I would think.. What do you say TRF?
TRF Drive Hard
09-28-2004, 06:35 PM

Hi, i've just joined up as i need some help with my 02.
Heres a picture:
http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~mjwrig/car/RIMG1169.jpg
Originally i had the michelin pilot escort cosworth, which i think is a ta01.
I broke the chassis on that and managed to get this 02 chassis second hand from my local model shop, its got all the bearing upgrades and a lot of other hop-ups.
My problem is it used to have blue front hubs but only one universal shaft, on the other side there was no connection and the wheel just spun.
I have tried finding the correct length dogbones but they are never long enough, so i put my old ta01 fronts on, which worked. until one of the hubs snapped :(
Any ideas on how to solve this, i still have all the parts to fit the blue carriers but not a set of two shafts. Also finding it really difficult to find spares :(

bribar2,
the part you have pictured is not a front end stabilizer. it's a front end brace. GPM got the kit for the front and rear end of the TA01/02 and FF01. Supposedly, if you still run the stock flexy lower arms, you can use that to adjust caster, but probably at the cost of suspension binding. I have a picture of how it's supposed to be installed if you like, just let me know and I'll scan it in.
Matt306,
for the front steering knuckle (the red ones) you can use the same part from the Hummer kit and Manta Ray based cars/buggy. They're now molded in black. Ask for TA01/DF01 front steering knuckles.
If fitting Universal shafts onto the TA01 steering knuckles with the TA02 front lower arms, you'll need TA02W universal joints since the 01 front knuckles are wider than the 02.
As for replacing the blue steering knuckles, look for TA03 front steering knuckles. same part in black, same bearings etc... I still have some TA02/FF01 stock front end parts with me (dogbone, hubs, etc...) PM me if you need any.

thanks for the reply.
i managed to stick the blue knuckles back on and bodged the wheel axle with an o-ring.
it now drives fine and the wheels spin freely.
Just another question, i've got the one way diff in the front. What would you recommend for the back, the ball diff or gear diff?
i run a 23x1 motor if that alters the decision depending on what power each diff can take.

ah, good news indeed.
about which differential you're using... as always, it has more to do with where you're running the car.
a 1 way front differential is mainly used on well prepped surfaces that tend to have highspeed characteristic.
The TA01/02 series came with rear ball diff and front gear diff stock. If you want to experiment with altering grip level, move the front gear diff to the back and stuff is with slow curing thick CA glue, coupled with CA glue acclerator. Otherwise you can try use the "G" part from the pajero chassis to lock the diff.
23x1 is not all that powerful, either diff will take it good as long as you build and set them right.

It can be used for both... but the ta03 balldiff, imho, is better... narrower pulley gear...

So why is a narrower pulley gear better? Is it not weaker?

Thanks for the help. Purchased that, so lets add that to my on the way list:)
What other parts are compatable? At least the ones that would be considered an upgrade. I have read through all the pages in this fourm, some things read easy, some seemed to me missing an answer. Plus I am sure since this topic was last "hopping" some ( seemingly you ) have figured out new upgrades:)

Hmm, I just noticed there are specific front universals for the TA02W.
Part #53225
You told be to buy Part #53310.
I assume they will still work. Am I correct? Or should I find the 53225?
Also, I see that there is also part# 53098 "Stainless Steel Suspension Shaft Set".
Will these be a direct replacement?

I'm here but I just read what goes on. I just got another TA02. This one was for free ;) and it came with a FRP upper and lower deck. It takes saddle packs so I think it's either an Avante chassis or a Top Force. I'm not too sure but it came with a huge center drive shaft and that is another hop up on it hehe. Not too shabby for free if you ask me.

Ted, do you know where to find, or how to figure out all the sizes and amounts of screws for the TA02(W)? I want to change them all to titanium, but do not want too many, or be missing any. Also as far as glues, and lubes, what should I be looking for?

3x10mm about 30
3x12mm about 6

3x16mm? not really sure but hey, they come in handy

Ordered a few more parts. A cross rear dampner stay with sway bar to match the front cross dampner stay with sway bar.
Another TA03 ball diff.
A GPM modded motor mount, so I can run the 22t pinion gear for a little more top end.
A rare set of GPM aluminum steering arms.
Another set of 4 32MM wide tires, and tamiya two piece wide rims that I will be using on the front! They fit perfect. Looking forward to checking turn in response after that.
Its been slow building the car, since I am driving the stock chassis ( with the mods I already had ), and I am waiting for the metal coaters to anodize all my aluminum parts to match .... BLACK.

man..that's a sweet car.
Question for the group though. I'm a new member and someone gave me a Hummer and I'm wanting to get started on it. I think i stripped the rear diff, so an upgrade would be first.
So....
1. I need a diff upgrade kit...where is the best place now considering the limited availability of these parts now?
2. this is a TA02, right?
3. I've seen people on the furum talking about widening this chassis? How and with what parts? Can they still be obtained?
4. Does anybody have any hopup parts they are selling?
Please forgive the NOOB questions, but this is new to me. I'm about to go back to Iraq and I plan to get a big truck when i get back. Until then, I'd love to hook this one up a bit. (Or at least get it to pull with both axles, not just the front)
Thanks,

I suppose you've never heard of tamiyaclub.com, where they've got manuals for almost every RC product of Tamiya scanned and published on the web site. If you register for a free basic membership, you'll get access to the medium-size page, which is sufficient for general reading, and if you want even more details, you can buy a membership and access the large-size page.

I have a Hummer and I think it's a TA02 chassis. The rear wheels of it uses a ball diff. When I rotate one wheel, the other will rotate in opposite direction, which is how diffs are supposed to work. But when I hold one wheel and rotate the other, the motor is supposed to rotate with the wheel, which did not happen, and, when I hold both of the wheels when it's driven by the motor, this action is supposed to stall the motor, which does not happen, either. So I am feeling that the Hummer is not getting traction from the rear wheel (i.e. it's now FWD), I don't know whether this is wrong feeling or I did something wrong in assembling? Thanks

It sounds like your ball diff has become loose. You need to tighten it, I think it can be done while it's still in the car if you remove both outdrives but I remember taking mine out to adjust it.

You're right! Thanks! I did not fully tighten the ball diff when assembling... It also fixed the problem that the vehicle was shaking and jumping when running at high speed. I thought that was a wheel alignment problem before...

Sup fellas! Now I'm in the TA02 and FF01 crew! I've been having serious problems getting into the rcca site, oh well. This is gonna be kinda long =P
I picked up a TA02 and an FF01 this Sunday. It came with 2 Airtronic 27 recievers, 2 Airtronic servos, one Futaba servo, Blitz Supra body, 350Z race car body, Frewer M3 body, Tamiya Sport tuned motor, and a trashed Orion stock motor.
Found it from a local ad. I actually bought from this kid before ($100 rtr Clod). If you guys ever ran into my "wiring for the Novak Explorer ESC" well yes, same guy. This is one of the few people that should be banned from the hobby!
I ask the kid like a thousand times about the condition of the cars. Well it had to be near 100% complete due to the parts support. The kid said they were complete except the body posts. He claimed the the condition was great but a little dusty. He also said the bodies were good too. So I said eff it and drove 30miles to check it out. I guess $45 isn't much of a loss if it turned into a disaster.
What I really wanted was a fwd chassis for my Beams Integra body and the Tamiya Blitz and the Tamiya 350z body. I've owned a TA01 AMG Mercedes and a TA02 Blitz Supra (still have the body) many many years back.
Then it hit me, I always love the twin motor mini, TA03, and TA02 setups and always wanted one. So luck happend to be on my side.
Anyways, so I got there and saw the cars sitting on the table. Cars were pretty trashed up. The TA02 had no shocks installed (in the bag) and the FF01 was also dirty with totally off camber/toe-in settings. Parts of the rear FF01 tower was cut off. The cars had no bearings except the FF01 had Tamiya sealed bearings out back (weird).
The bodies are terrible. I almost cried seeing how these Tamiya bodies were cut, painted, and stickered. If it was an HPI body then I would not care :D The windows are painted white on the Blitz body. No stickers at all except some Novak stickers across the left side. Some random ugly hole was drilled on the top right of the body. The back looked like it had been in a fender bender. Wheel wells were jagged too. It was the same thing for the 350Z body. The window decals were removed except the back which is about the fall off. Atleast it still has the headlights and grill. I think both can be saved, no cracks and the lousy cutting didn't go over the real cut lines. One day I'm gonna pick up some window film like what Tamiya uses and find a way to do the Supra and 350Z tail lights. The Frewer body is pink and windows white. The wheel wells are frigging ugly.
Took my time yesterday and today to finish what I can finish. Screws were on the wrong places here and there. The shocks were redone. The adjustable camber was removed and the fixed ones back on. That took a lot of flex out. Threw bearings on the rear hubs (thats all I have!). Replaced the old screws brand new screws. Luckily I kept some spare parts because the TA02 motor mount was missing and the rear tower had hairline cracks. Then cleaned it without removing parts. Installed the HPI 5 spoke wheels and that's it. Just ordered the body mounts today!
Sorry, I got lazy and didn't take the 'before' pics.

What motors are you planning to run? and ESC/s
Burnout
11-08-2005, 12:13 PM
Thanks!
I'm going for the drift setup. Believe it or not I never tried drifting yet! Since running two motors doesn't really equal to more speed but much more torque I figured that drifting it would be perfect. I also haven't seen much talk about twin motor drifting.
I'm looking at your typical popular stock motors. Something around the 23-27 turn range. The ESC will be a Durtrax 12t reversible. Its been working quite well on my crawler clod and basher clod.
Hopefully today I can find some brand new shiney brass balls or red balls, red wheel nuts, and new Tamiya rims. I gotta get the HPI wheels out!
Kenny T
11-09-2005, 06:23 AM
Nah man, build a top speeder. :D
You don't really need that much torque to drift on rubber. A good single stock motor will drift the TA02 on rubber, just load up the front with camber(about -4 deg), maybe some on the rear if you feel the need.
Tighten the rear diff and mess with the front.
PS, do a BURNOUT. :)
Burnout
11-09-2005, 12:01 PM
Thanks for the tips. Too bad yesterday the LHS didn't have what I wanted. Tower Hobbies does but oh well, so I settled for less. I guess supporting the LHS once in a while is a good thing.
Building a top speeder is going to require two hot motors, batteries, and esc. Which IMO isn't cheap! I can't imagine the runtime. We also gotta think about the parts support!
Yeah, I notice that the tires aren't that grippy. They feel a little plasticky. This is great for me because I don't want to spend more money on drift tires!
As for the camber, I removed the adjustables. Seems like with them on the suspension has so much flex. I'll take a second look at them soon.
I never knew that FF01's have balldiffs. My TA02 has geardiffs. I think they are both interchangable. I might fool around with that later too. I'm not going to drive it until its finished though.
If I had twin brushless esc's and motors it would definitely do a burnout!

"My '02 has a rear ball diff and a gear diff in front, which I thought was standard for all TA02's."
You are right! I'm such a dummie. The rear felt very loose so I just assume its a gear diff. On the FF02 gearbox I could feel the tightness of the balls.
As for getting parts, I also have no idea. There are still gearcases at Tower Hobbies and other small things. I didn't see any arms at all. I think there is a huge supplier at TamiyaClub? Also you have eBay, but I've been on there and didn't really see anything besides aluminum fr/rr knuckles.
But of course I'm just a rookie. The hardcore should be able to locate anything!
I wouldn't mind getting a black rear gearbox. I saw it at Towerhobbies for the DF02 (?) but with no black rear shock tower, only the long one was attached. Some sway bars and the FRP chassis I would be in heaven! I guess we just have to drive very carefully!
Hey, I am new to this forum, so i hope people still read this thread. Anyway, I have two 02s and I want to put the skyline speed tuned gear set, in my car, but i cant seem to find the chart that shows which pinion gears you can use, can answer that for me?

if so the the only pinions you can use are metric 48 pitch. I feel they are close to imposible to find... They must be Metric; US 48 pitch is different. and the different number of teeth would be if I recall correctly would be 15-21.

Seemed like a good deal because of the nice body and the parts that are on it. I have a controller for it already.

I've got a Gravel Hound coming in any day now, and I can tell you that the DF01 and DF02 ball diffs and gear diffs are definitely swappable. Just as your front and rear diffs are swappable as well (but you already knew that ;) )

 Hi fellow TA02 owners!
I was wondering if any of you know if I can swap my TA02 front uprights (knuckles) with ones from another chassis? I know the ones of a TA03 will work, well at least according to the Tamiya website they will, but they're out of stock.
I broke the right side trying to adjust the toe on mine and for the life of me I can't find replacements anywhere in the states. I was looking at the TA01 uprights and they look like they'll work but I can't say for sure and don't want to waste the cash if they won't.
I'm willing to change out the entire front suspension if I have to! Please, any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By the way
The hub carrier requires 2x 5x11mm bearings each. Don't want you getting them confused with the TA02 uprights that take 5x11 and a much larger bearing on the inside of the carrier.

God Bless you XXWoodManXX, man I appreciate it. This thing has been sitting on my shelf for 3 years now out of action and I've been itching to rip it around the local walking track since then. Just within the last few days have I started up my search again for this part.
Just one more question for you; I'm running the stock motor on here now, would it make any difference to change it out for the Tamiya RS540 Tuned Motor? Everything is bone stock on this chassis now and I was concerned about how the stock gears and shafts would take the extra power. I'd like it to have some more "umph" but at the same time I don't want to rip the stock gears/driveline out (assuming they're that fragile, I'm not too seasoned when it comes to R\C cars). If you have any suggestions on another brand motor I'm open.
Thanks again,
-Jason
Edit: I'm not sure which bearings I'm suppose to be buying, are these it?

Jas,
As far as bearings, those are it. If you need to buy the EHTIRE set, that is. If you just want bearings for those new front hubs ONLY, then Duratrax has ya covered, and for alot less. :)
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD121&P=ML
As for motors, I would suggest something moderately fast, but not uncontrolable. Perhaps Trinity's SpeedGems line? Or get something along the lines of 19-turns or more. The gears are nylon and they're pretty strong, As long as you follow the chart Tamiya provides, you should be set. And don't forget speed control, either. What're you running now? The mechanical speed control, or an electronic? Brand/model?

Cool man, that price on those bearings shocked me a little. I didn't think I would need that many! I'll get those from your link. The speed controller I'm running now is a Duratrax Spike DTXM1040. From the spec sheet I found on the internet, it says this ESC is for 27T Stock motors. Is that going to present a problem if I upgrade?
I'm going to order all of these things from Tower Sunday night so if you can think of anything else I might need please let me know.

Jason,
The link I provided you with on those bearings is for two, and you need four, so just remember to order 2 sets, ok? ;)
Your ESC leaves almost NO room for upgradability. 27T would be strictly stock class only. As far as upgraded ESCs go, here's a good, affordable line I would recommend:
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=intellispeed&FVPROFIL=++&search3=Go
It's the Duratrax Intellispeed line of speed controllers. As you can see, the prices on them are VERY reasonale, and they all have reverse, and reverse lock-out (for racing purposes) :) I personally have the Intellispeed 12T, and that leaves me ALOT of room for modified motor selection. Now, several racers would recommend a No Limit ESC, and run something along the lines of a 10T or a 9T motor (VERY fast!). I say just get the most bang for your buck here. If you're just looking to bash, I doubt you'll need something TOO insane. ;)

Here's the original TA02 upright with TA02 halfshaft:
http://img468.imageshack.us/img468/1193/023eh3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here's the TA01 upright with the TA02 halfshaft:
http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/5961/024dg9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
As you can see the the halfshaft is too short to work with my new upright.
Do I need to order the halfshafts for a TA01 now? Or do you guys modify these somehow to work together? I'm not sure if "halfshaft" is the proper term, correct if I'm wrong on that.
Thanks,
-Jason

I've got a little issue I;m trying to solve and thought some outside input would be goog. Maybe some of you all can weigh in... What other suspension arms can I use on my 02, and retain stock width? The original arms seem to be available sometimes form tamiyausa, but I don't like that they ar emade of the flexible plastic (have a set, but have modded them). So I was looking and saw that my M chassis arms would fit with a little clearance, and I know that an M03 with TL01 arms is an FF02. Anyone know if TL01 arms will fit with minor modification? If so what about TL01 LA set? Also, If I were to run the Hummer arms, would I have a 200mm sedan?
