The Savage is more durable since its 1/8 scale so I'd say its ok for a begginer but you should really start out with something easier like an ST so there aren't so many gears a parts to break. Just an idea.:)

I had difficulty picking between those two and it was a tough choice. I decided on the Savage in the end after having play at my local shop. My thoughts were that the Savage was slightly bigger and heavier and seem more robust. Although slightly slower it seemed to be more stable and jumped better.
The TMaxx however has a reverse and electric start as standard (options on Savage) and there's more hop-ups available.
And finally I liked the sound of the Savages engine more as the TMaxx seemed to rev high making it sound like a garden strimmer
:D :D :D :D.

I wouldn't say the savage is MORE durable. i haven't busted a thing on my T-Maxx yet, not even the body. flipped it many times. Now, this topic really comes down to your personal preferance. They run simular, they have about the same hop ups, they both look just as cool. So its really up to u. I don't think neither one is "better" than the other. Just different.

I have just found overall the savages don't have as many parts that break like the t-maxx does. The T-maxx usually needs a lot of upgrade parts to be as durable as a Savage is stock. As for speed, an MT isn't suppose to be a speed demon anyway so unless you like driving in a straight line or have a huge straight away on you track the speed doesn't really help MT's out too much since the roll pretty easly, thats just my opinion though.

I totally agree with DubDucedDurango. My cousin has a tmaxx that always seems to be breaking stuff. And once he breaks it he goes out and gets the aluminum hopup of that part. I've had my Savage since Nov. and the only thing that I broke was one of my uprights. I decided to give HPI a call and told them what happened and their customer service dept. sent out 4 new uprights to my house. The Savage can take a beating. Just yesterday while running it around my park I was going full speed right into a hidden sprinkler control box. You should have seen this thing doing front flips about 4 ft in the air and slam right into a retaining wall that was about 8 ft from the box. It's a miracle that not one thing broke, can't say the same for the control box. Right after that my cousin ran his tmaxx into a wooden park bench that broke a screw hole on his chassis and now his front bulk is is loose.

i can only speak for the savage, it's a tough truck that will take a beating. there are a few initial items you need to up grade to keep it breakage free, but they are minimal. [ stock dog bones break easily, but for a few bucks you can get some HD bones and you're good to go].

I'd go with the Savage. I have both, a Maxx, a .21 extended Maxx, and a Savage. The Savage is definitely superior, here are my reasons:
Durability, durability, durability - My Maxxes almost always come back with something broken, generally in the driveline, or some of the small suspension parts. The Savage has been bulletproof. NOt a single broken part yet. Yesterday, I was jumping it from the top of a sandpit that's about 25-30 feet high. I messed up a few times, and it ended in a cartwheel down the side. I've destroyed many a Maxx that way. My Savage just kept going. 5 times.
Quality - The shocks on my Savage have never blown out. I've never been able to get more than a few days of running out of a set of stock maxx shocks. The caps always blow out, or they start leaking. ANd before people start writing telling me I'm stupid and don't know how to build shocks, I've been racing for about 17 years now, and I KNOW how to set up a car, and build a set of shocks, the Maxx just has worthless shocks. In addition, the whole truck is overbuilt, huge arms, well designed layout, good primer on the tank (unlike the maxx) good bumpers and skidplates that help it glide over things with ease, it's without equal on the market.
Stability - The Maxx flips over easily. Wide suspension or the original, it flips over with ease, swaybars help, but it's still tippy, and the suspension geometry is the reason. The Savage is extremely stable, and stays on it's wheel in all but the most extreme circumstances. The suspension geometry is such that it is inherently stable.
The Maxx does have advantages, of course. Built in reverse, electric start, and amazing parts availability, and hop-ups. It's also nice that a .15 uses significantly less fuel than a .21, so running the maxx will be cheaper fuel wise. Also, you dont' need a seperate glow starter with the Maxx (although it does make it easier). The new 2.5 Maxx also has a higher top speed.
I do feel that the advantages of the Savage outweigh the Maxx. I also have always felt that getting consistent performance out of a .21 is MUCH easier than a .15, for whatever reason. I'd get the Savage, and spend an extra $35 on the reverse module. You won't be disappointed by the Savage. I'm very happy with mine.
In fact, I just remarked to my wife yesterday after running the Savage that it really made me angry that out of the box my Savage is better that my $1500 Maxx.

it's a wonder you're still alive after telling your wife you spent $1500 on a 'toy':)

heres what to do. Both trucks are great and you will have great fun with them.
Now EVERY WORD ON THIS BOARD is personal preprense (SP?). So just go on over to your hobby shop and see which truck you like the looks of the most. Don't let the board member or sales person decide what truck is for you. It's up to you and which truck you just like more. Let your mind do that talking and have it decide for you. You will be very happy with which ever truck you buy so It's just up to you and which you THINK you like the most.
Agree 100% with ncrego. that's a well though and put post.

I agree 100% with ncrego.. He hit it right on the head..
My best friend has a tmaxx 2.5 I got the savage..
He has broken about 10 bulkheads, a-arms, shocks to the point he refuses to drive his tmaxx if weather isnt nice, or tempatures are to cold, etc etc.
Now me on the other hand have jumped my savage 40 feet, ran in snow, actually running thru puddles and completly submerged my savage when I found a hole not a puddle. It was funny bwaaaahhhhhhh bwaaaaaaaaaahhhhh gurgle gurgle gurgle bwahhhhhhhhhh.. It was 100% fine and kept running thru puddles for the rest of the night.
Only thing that has broke on my savage in 6months is my gas tank broke <---my fault lesson learned in how to jump
and a dogbone.

today I put a hyper .21 8 port engine on my savage it made one hell of a differance it screams know and lots of wheelies standing still and moveing. any I took it to a local motor croos track and beat the piss out of it the best that I could and never broke a thing. all I can say about the savage is that it like a sore peter you just can't beat it.
