i think my rs4 is under 3.5 pounds, and the long pressure line prolly wouldnt look too good, whats the hp on your epic .18? is it powerful enough to seem like it doesnt even drop revs when it goes into second gear
Manic RS4

Let's just say it's got enough nuts.
Rated at 1.8hp, though closer to 1.2 from what I understand.
I don't think an RS4 can handle anything more than a high revvin .18.
I'd love to see a video with a BB conversion.

i think i ahve heard of RS4's with an O.S. .18tz in it, i was thinking about getting one if i replace my engine, well, i dont even know what engine i would get but im nto sure how it would handle 2.3 hp :D

I got this RS4 3 evo rolling chassis for 50 buks! I got a hell of a deal, because this thing is basicly brand new. 2 speed trany of course.
I just got it in the mail!

This car is in excellent shape! like new. I have to clean some areas, other than that, perfect! Lots more progress comming soon.
Just the wheels are nasty. New rims and tires are a must.

I plan on buying a new set of rims, and tires. (HPI TE37, HPI X pattern Tires) I got if for 50 buks off a friend, who is no longer into RC.

I cleaned up the chassis. Im waiting for my motor to come in the mail. (AE .15) I also have a VSM in the mail too. Cant wait till its here.
Next I have to buy new tires and wheels. Then a nice header, muffler, and new gas tank.
The wheels are just junkies. They will be replaced real soon.

Nitro cars should never be clean. :)

Quick question. My steering servo is locking up at full turn and makes weird clicking noises when the car is on the ground. It turns normal when I hold the car in the air.
It is shot or what?

your nylon gear mite has chewed themselves up under stress, remember, dont replace, upgrade
Hey again. The SS 18 is running great with those mods you all told me about. Thanks again.
Now I have another issue:
I just dug my old RS4 3 Type SS 12R out of the attic.
It's been up there in the box for like 2 years. I'd been having some probs with it not shifting into second gear, so I'm going to tear it down and check it out, but now I have another problem.....
The motor seems to be stuck. I didn't know about after-run oil back then so it's probably just gummed up and needs to be cleaned?
Do you guys think it'll run OK again, if I just tear the engine down and clean it all up?
What should I check for as far as the tranny not shifting to 2nd?
Any help or advice is much appreciated!
josh222
05-14-2006, 02:58 PM
i would just clean it, if its still got compression after you clean it run it. For the shifting you need to mess with the spring setting in the 2 speed

I took the engine out, squirted alot of after run oil in everywhere I could, then worked it loose. Put it all back together and it started right up and blew out all the crap. Now to just fix that tranny and I'll have 2 parking lot bruisers - lol.

stop right there, this is a touring car, its not made for big or crazy engines. there is usch a thing as over kill and wasted power. it eats tires and drivetrian. Something like am os cvr 18 has plenty of power
Manic RS4
05-14-2006, 08:45 PM
I have to agree.
My RS4 3 with an epic .18 is near uncontrollable.
And it's got 31mm tires on all four corners.
My RS4 1 with an OS .18 CVR is the same. Very tricky to keep straight on the straightaways, and easily hangs out the rear end if you get too greedy.
But fun they are, that's for sure.
A big block car would be more of a novelty. Or maybe a dedicated drag racer.

if your not happy with your T-15, do some engine porting, its an entirely different engine after this, lots of power, people tend to think that bigger engine=more speed, this isnt really the case, unless you have specially machined gears, it not gunna go any faster or accelerate any better since it will just spin the tires and prolly nto rev any higher, and even if it did go faster, its wasted power and most cant control it

it really is not about the bigger and more powerfull engines.
learn to drive the car.
when i say learn to drive, i mean learn to put it where you want, when you want.
now if top speed is your poision the nitro three is not your car get a schumacher or the traxxas the tec something abomination.

well, the reason i was asking about a BB is i want to convert mine to offraod/rally use w/ SNR shock towers and shocks and im sure more power and tourqe would be nice offraod but yea i guess itd be overkill in a 1/10 touring car. Anyone run their RS4 like this, offraod? Rallys what i want but i dont think i can afford an inferno GT cause shipping is so darn pricey w/ it being so big so converting the RS4 sounded good enough
any thouhgts/insight is welcome

Hello, can any one advise what is a good manifold/pipe for an OS 18tz to be installed in my rs4 3 18ss?
apollo
05-17-2006, 09:13 PM
why are you asking for a pipe for an 18tz to go on your RS4 18ss? here are some links
RD Logics Turbo II pipe (http://www.rdlogics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=61235S&type=store) $60,i own this, works very well, good tone too, but should be port matched for more power
THS Racing tuned pipe (https://secure.handzon.com/itechapp/admin/checkout/?storeid=1531&prodid=37986&storereferer=http://thsracing.com/?pageid=28221) $50, i dont own this, but i have heard it was good, you should still port match it,you can buy it from www.towerhobies.com , here (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCPX4&P=7) is the link to that

Quickie. I have the Savage 4.6 as a new toy so haven't driven the 18SS for a bit. By removing the front drive shafts and front centre shaft to turn the car into a rear drive / brake car only, will this bring the desired results of a drift / burnout queen?
apollo
05-18-2006, 01:50 PM
it will make it really hard to control, i have had the shaft come loose and when i hit the gas it would only go outta control
KLH2004a
05-18-2006, 07:45 PM
Yeah, removing the front drive causes not so good control. Simply put of course. You could start by getting a harder compound tire for the rears and this will get you to where you want to be, or at least part of the way.

and josh, what are those turnbuckles going from your knuckles to the upper deck? do they help make it more stable?
hows that THS pipe work? i was debating getting one, what else do you have on order also?
The pipe seems to be working well. May be a little louder and seems to flow a lil better, but I did other mods at the time I installed the pipe so it's kinda difficult to say as to whether it added that much more power. I do know it took me a while to re-tune the engine for it.
Among other things I ordered the 39 and 43 spur gears for more top end. Also ordered the fail-safe for it, so I'm not so worried about it running out of the reception area at 50+ mph and destroying itself. A front one-way diff, aluminum susp arms, alum gear dif cases, alum front and rear knuckles and front C hubs.... also some new glow plugs, assorted clips, new brakes, and some extra o-rings... I've already installed the THS pipe, the HPI racing clutch, HPI lightweight flywheel, threaded shocks, a front sway bar that I had, 31mm tires all around, and I know I forgetting something.... That's just the 18SS.... the 12r SS is still stock other than a HPI lightweight flywheel.
Here's some quick pix:
The blue one is my 18SS with a Cuda body that I've been messing with.... Not finished with it yet.... Sure it's as aerodynamic as a brick but the with that .18, body aerodynamics aren't a huge factor for a parking lot basher IMHO.
http://i4.tinypic.com/10hvj1f.jpg
The silver one is of course the HPI Mustang body that I've been running on my .12r SS. The white LED headlights and red LED taillights are nice when I run it at night after a good spinout... Now I can tell which way it's pointed - lol!
http://i4.tinypic.com/10hvj8p.jpg
And finally the Countach body, I'll also be running on my 18SS. Need to finish it out (cut out windows) and get the 26mm wheels for up front to get it to look right (right stance).... I must say this body looks damn impressive on the car as it flies by.
http://i4.tinypic.com/10hvjgl.jpg
I have as much fun doing the bodies as anything else... I've got the Trans Am, Mustang Cobra, GT-40, and a '70 Plymouth Superbird bodies also... And I forget how many I've thrown out in the last year.

Thanks.
I run an s25 with the rotostart backplate, no worries. About 2mm clearance to the rear suspension arms (aluminium).
I expect the 21 will have slighty more room.
Has anyone run the one way front diff in their 18SS, and if so, what did you think of it? Is it better than the stock 18SS front dif set-up?
I bought one new off ebay for like $5.50 and went to install it, but seems like the front end is way to stiff.... Hard to spin it with my hand, like it's rubbing on the casing. I checked it against the HPI site and it's the right part number so I dunno.... I haven't run the car with it yet, still trying to make it work smoother.
Anyway, any insight would be appreciated.

Sounds like you didn't mesh the gears right.
Or someone has installed the one way bearing backwards or something?

i noticed if you use alot of grease in every part of the diff that it actually helps a little bit, i used a 1oz. tube of traxxas grease all up just on the difs, if you load it up it releives resistance and it seems liek the limited slip effect was better but thats just me, just dont put so much in there it drags alot, btw, that O.S. .18cv-rx i got is a beast, anyone looking for some more power outta their RS4 should get it, ig ot the high speed ratios and that thing spins the tires like crazy...if i can keep it straight

when i meant i cant keep it straight, i meant from a stand still flooring it, its those D-compound tires, tryin to burn them up cuz i have yet another set and then some pro belted ones, cant imagine when this thing opens up abotu a gallon in with a lower gear ratio....i might have to try that

foams costs too much for me (though the pro belted ones were $30 for all 4) , they chunk easier, they will wear down faster with my driving, and i just dont like the rim styles either

Let me guess.... It dies out when you hit the brakes?
I got mine to work good by adjusting the idle speed up, on the carb, and playing with the trim on my controller. I dunno, it just took a while to get both my RS4 SS cars set-up right.

On a side note, do you know is the Super Nitro RS4 rear shock tower will work w. the EVO?

If by spring, you mean part # A396B, mine was sloppy too. I took a small zip tie and wrapped it around that part on the servo saver and tightened it up as much as possible... That got rid of the servo slop on my cars.
As for seeing the OFNA linkage on an RS4.... I have not. And nor do I know if the Super rear shock tower will work on an EVO. But I'm nowhere near as knowlegable as some of these other guys, maybe one of them can better answer your question on that.

Re the ofna throttle mod, similar to that I did on the savage. Basically replaced the stock HPI throttle servo horn with a standard 1 piece item and attached the Ofna slider kit. Once looking at the pics now, it should be pretty self explanatory to fit. Just set idle first (the angle of the servo horn and length of rod) then the brake is easy.

I am having trouble locating the correct CVD kit for my RS4 EVO 3. HPI is telling me the 80803 and 80804 is the correct kit for the car. However the rear CVD bones seem way too short. The measurement is 52.2mm for the rear and 55 mm for the front. They also offer a black CVD kit, 80838 and 80837 for the RS4. I do not know the dimensions.
Can someone please confirm the correct CVD kit and dimensions...
Thanks....

gigacrush, what are those aluminum arm things going to the front brace of the car?
gigacrush
06-23-2006, 04:31 PM
the allumnum braces are to add extra strength to the front end. i have aset for the rear also but im waiting for my other parts before installing them.they really make the chassie alot stronger than if you just ran the upper deck.the only problem is the stock gas tank will not fit right.so im going to use a kyosho tank from the nitro blizzard.
the alluminum braces are made by megatech and are a verry hard to find item.once in a wile you can find them on ebay. but for the front set you can use nitro mt upper arms with spacers and they fit pretty good.but the rear ones i had to have made custom and sent out for powder coating. ill post the part# tonigh after work

yep it has been done, here (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4460358/tm.htm) is where someone has done it on their RS4, and hotbodies makes a dual disc brake kit, here (http://www.hobbiesr.com/hbs/hbs-527/hbs61135.htm) it is, or you can just use the hyper 7 discs with the R40 pads and make a dual disc, but i use that setup with one disc and its more power than i need so i think 2 is a waste

change the gearing, for the highest speed (but a little less acceleration) you will need:
1st gear pinion: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDHM2&P=7
2nd gear pinion: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDHM5&P=7
1st gear spur: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCLR7&P=7
2nd gear spur: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXM617&P=7
i run this combo in mine and it has no problem turning it (of ocourse i have a modded os 18) but the stock 18ss didnt have a problem with it either so i suppose a T-15 would do ok
and for $110 you can get a pull start os 18 cv-rx that kicks arse
also to slightly increase acceleration and overall power you can port the sleeve to get more power out of it, it makes a noticible (sp?) difference in performance, im all for porting engines, its free power, just get a dremel

also i sometime get air bubbles in the gas line and the primer wont get them out anyone know why this happens my solution to this i have been refilling the gas tank and give it a couple of minutes the prime the hell out of it ant they leave if i try priming it bubbles just go up and down
apollo
07-14-2006, 01:09 AM
if you are getting air bubbles in your fuel line there is an air leak somewhere, whether it be the primer (which is a majority of them) fuel filter (if you run one) tank lid seal might not seal good, small crack in the tank, or a pinhole in the fuel line
take your tank and put it underwater, and blow into the pressure line while holding the line that would go to the carb, any leaks will bubble out

Hmmmm...It seems HPI Nitro Star S-25 specific. Can this be done on any engine?
apollo
07-14-2006, 02:19 AM
yes, that is just a general guide but i do more to my port openings, it can be done to any nitro engine, in fact i have done it with two of my engines, an HPI 18ss engine which is now a screamer with tons of power, and my fairly new O.S. .18 cv-rx which also has lots and lots of power, its all free, you just have to know what to do, im by no means a porting or engine expert because there are more people on the forums more experienced than me, but i can help you out a little, if you wunna talk about this to me my screen name is HPI Apollo and my e-mail is hpinitroracer@gmail.com, dont wunna make a giant IM of the thread

you cant realy rate one manufacturers hp rating against another because they dont use the same method to dyno thier motors. os is known to under rate thier motors hp levels. you might want to try getting a set of cvd's, there suposed to make the drive train more efficient.

Right now I am running 12lb spring's up front, and 8lb spring's in the rear, but then again I race on a clay oval. What weight spring you run really is gonna depend on the surface your driving on,on parking lots your gonna need some fairly soft springs, otherwise you will be bouncing all over the place. As for brand of springs I run ntc3,custom works, and integy springs.Mainly because the spring rate is measured in lb's.Associated does make a kit of ntc3 springs that comes with a bunch of different rates, for about $30.

i say go for it, for 20 sumodd dollars you cant go wrong. it cant be worse than than the stock chassis and if its not as good as the hpi 3mm chassis, o well you only paid 20 sumthing for it. what do you have to lose?

Hey guys....Got a rs43 Evo here...Have a THS pipe, 10mm air cleaner, Du-Bro inline fuel filter, boost bottle.. I am just now starting to upgrade my car since i just bought it back from a friend... Any suggestions would be helpful.. Also was wondering if the Stage-D conversion kit is any good or not. Kinda want to make a drifter out of mine... Thanks.. Brandon

welcome to the forums!! as for upgrades for the evo turn buckles, rs4 2 racer fuel tank, and aluminum wheel hexes are some good upgrades. as for the drift chassis you can still drift without it, but if you wanna get serious about this drift thing, go for it.

finnaly ran it today, and im very satisfied with the mods that i decided to make. :D
the car handles very well and the shocks make the suspension nice and smooth. i got it setup just the way i like it with a little bit of on-power over steer to let me know when to get off the throtle. i was very im pressed with the tuned pipe as well. the power delivery is consistant over the mid and upper ends of the power band. the only thing that i would change is the tires. they dont have any kind of grip untill about a tank in when have had a chance to heat up, but thats what i get for buying pretty boy street racer slicks :D o well, live and learn. but other than that ima compleatly satisfied. next up are the carbon fiber front and rear shock towers, and the carbon upper deck. ill make sure to keep you guys posted. ;)
im off to go clean up the chassis.

the largest engine that you can fit in an rs4 3 is a .18 but thie is plenty of power for this chassis. some of the more popular choices are the o.s. 18 cvr-x (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGGP7&P=0) and the HPI nitro star 18ss (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGEE4&P=0). most people run the o.s motor. it has more horse power and is less exspensive. everyone that i kno who owns one loves it.

Max Temp?
apollo
07-24-2006, 08:07 PM
dont tune to temp, tune for performance
there really is no specific temp it will normally run at, my best guess is between 230 and 270, it is all effected by tuning, airflow, ect

make sure that you buy an 18 with a full threaded crank and a pullstart. thats it.
anybody know where i can get a metal brake lever from, the plastic one that came with the kit is worn out. i know that some of the aluminum center gear mounts come with them but i dont want the whole gear mount, just the brake lever.

as for the diff, you want to try and slow down the diff action. hpi sells diffadjustmen springs (#72215) for $8. i use these in my car and i am happy with them. for you purposes i would use a gold spring in the front and a black sprin in the rear.

The rs4 3 uses unsealed diffs, oil will leak out and grease can slowly come out as well, the springs are the best to use, i use them with grease and like the tight diffs

well for tuned pipes, alot of people are using either the ths or rd logics pipes. on my car i use a jpl turbo pipe. i like it cause i can use the stock manifold. on my car i also use topcad aluminum shocks (http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=421_389_390&products_id=4341) i have nothing but good things to say about both of these mods and for the money you cant go wrong with those shocks. thiere high quality bottom fill units with Ti-nitrate coated shafts and teflon pistons, realy good stuff. ;)

I run the rd logics turbo 2 pipe on mine, and I currently run factory team tc3 shocks on mine. The most important thing about buying shocks,is making sure that you can buy parts for them.Seals go bad,and caps/mounts break.A shock rebuild kit is much cheaper than having to buy a whole new set of shocks everytime. And the shocks usually need rebuilt every few weeks, depending on how much it is ran, sometime sooner than later.

well I'm sure it could be modified to fit.. either use different holes on the tower and trim off the rest of the tower. You can also make new holes in the tower, just below the middle holes theres quite a bit of space there on the hot bodies towers. And bending the pipe a little bit away from the tower would work too.

aluminum hexes replace the easily stippable plastic hexes that the wheel rims attach too, i have some aluminum ones for an mt2 but i ground the nub off of it so it would fit
