Try going to the savage vehical forum and read up on the good bad things about it. I'd say when you order your Savage make sure you get some HD Hpi Dogbones too. The stockers break a lot.:)

get an inline fuel filter, some extra glow plugs, a good ignitor and some fuel =). Extras would be a new air filter like the Motor Saver or the HPI hi flow. Maybe the Hot Bodies exhaust for an inexpensive slight upgrade on the pipe. But most of all just get ready for a good time. I love mine alot. It's my first Nitro vehicle and its been very kind to me.

I agree with both of the above two posts. You might want to consider a rechargeable NiMH receiver pack since, like virtually all RTRs, the Savage come with a AA battery holder.

That stuff should get you going pretty well. Visit the Savage forums here and on MaxxTraxx.com, savageunleashed.com, and savage-central.com for more info on hop ups and tech tips and such.

i love my savage i've had about 4gallons thru it already and still running strong!! ive changed my cooling head, and it really gets the temps down and also changed the pipe the stock one sucks!! i got the ofna 9.5 tuned pipe on there and it works great! i got it for 15.00 dollars on ebay

the bad things about the savage:
stock wheels really weak plastic, only lasted 3 weeks i put on the tmax wheels and it's been running fine so far.. also bought on ebay for 15.oo

the stock pipe <<throw it away!!

get a machined alum. head to make temps go down..stock motor runs fairly hot

a 6volt nimh reciver battery makes stopping and turning really well.

and of course loc tite every bolt that's metal to metal contact. and also make sure the set screw on your tranny gear has loc tite.

ohh ya the fuel tank sucks too!! and sooner or later you will have the modify or replace the linkage on your throttle servo.

Things I think are a must

better air filter is a must if you run in the dirt at all
fuel filter
OFNA or simular throttle linkage
threadlock all metal to metal connections
Rx pack makes the servos perform a lot better

that's it
I haven't broken any dog bones yet and I bash mine hard and have used about 1 1/2 gallons of fuel.

A better pipe is nice but they can cost a lot, it would be the first thing to save for.

A better cooling head is nice but they can cost 1/2 as much as an entire new engine. Unless you can get one cheap it is better just to save for a new engine when the kit one is wore out.

I have had no problems with the kit tank.

I have also had no problems with the kit wheels, just make sure you check the nuts often.

Of course you need the normal stuff

4 way wrench for glow plugs, wheels, etc
spare glow plugs
fuel bottle
fuel
ignitor
other tools

Thanks to www.savage-central.com, I did this mod today.

I flipped it upside-down and let it idle - ran for over four minutes, never even hiccuped. No more lean conditions for me!

Beats running an Ofna tank because you still keep the 160cc stock tank, and you add 2oz more with the heli tank. And it's half the price. I paid $4.50 for the tank and $2 for the brass stock (still have about 30" left of that, too).
