Which would be better to lube the Pede's tranny?

BL power means the tranny will take a beating, so I need some good lube.

I'd get the teflon stuff. If you want a grease, I suggest going down to an automotive store and buying a spray can of lithium grease, or you can buy it in containers as well. It doesnt break down and sticks pretty good. I like the spray stuff better because it is a bit thinner.
I just put a Novak SS with 5800 motor in my pede and I've been driving it around a bit. I use the lithium grease and it works great. :)If I were you, I'd get the teflon stuff though.

How often do you think I'll need to reapply the teflon stuff? I assume it would stick to the gears pretty well, but I'm wondering. Obviously less frequent maintenance is better.
pudder
03-03-2004, 04:16 PM
Does the product not say when to re-apply? I'd say after your first application, run the truck for a few packs, then take apart the gearbox to check the gears after a while. You'll then know how long it lasts. For easy application after the grease and stuff is cleaned out first, you could just take off the rear skidplate/brace and drop it in the hole.
I dont even know what I'm running right now for transmission lube. lol Maybe I'll take it apart someday.
SS Pede
03-03-2004, 08:45 PM
I haven't purchased the lube yet, that's why I was wondering how often it might need to be re-applied.:) I will just have to see when I eventually buy it. I really like the idea of using the hole in the bottom of the tranny, I'm definitely going to do that.

My stupid batts went on the fritz, im pretty sure they are junk now. I had two 1700's, they will half charge and a couple of the cells in each pack get real hot. I am going to combine the two into one good pack. Anyone have any suggestions on nice batt's to get. I don't want to spend tons of cash on em but want something nice. I have a duratrax peak charger by the way. I wan to go NiMH but thats alot o cash. I am open to suggestions.... Also anyone out there have rpm rims on their trucjk. I just got some talonz for mine, they look awesome, but I cannot get the rears on. I have the rpm hexes on but there still is not enough thread there to get the plastic lock nut to hold. You think my rims were mispackaged, they did come without the hexes.... Anyone else familar with this problem??

Well, im not having much luck with my nitro truck, so i think i might sell it, and put the $ into the stampede. Im not sure if i will or not, but well see. Im tired of cranking forever, and then it dying or breaking on me when i can/do get it to run. I love how fast it is on top end, and the sound, and the run times, but man its a pain in the butt:rolleyes: . If i do decide to spend money on my stampede, what should i get? I know i need bearings because my back bushings are wore out, and they are eating up my axle shafts. How bad are the 5x8 bearings really? Are they really all that bad? I dont want to buy hubs too, and i can replace a bearing every know and then if it busts, so would they be ok for me? About the highest i ever jump my truck is probably 3ft, and ive never broke anything. I guess ill keep the esc/motor i have right now, but may upgrade later. I had it geared 13/87 til i stripped the spur gear, and i think ill buy another 87t spur, and run it like that because i like the power it has like that. I will mainly be running it in the dirt, and jumping it a little. I would like to get some blue rpm clawz wheels(i think thats what theyre called), but im not sure. Im keeping the stock tires, and i might also get a blue rpm gear cover. Is there anything else that is nesecarry? I also might buy a metal geared steering servo sometime(or a good one with plastic gears). Any suggestions on a cheap one(about $30)? My charger says it will only handle a 1700 battery, but i would like to buy a 2000. Do you think it would handle it ok? How much better will a 2000nicd be over a shark 1500nicd? Thanks for any help. Also, how much are 2 axle shafts(mine are a little ate up), and how much would 2 pairs of those blue rims cost at the LHS?

Also, would a traxxas e/t maxx 2055 steering servo work good for a stampede? I will just be bashing, and would like something with decent torque and durability, so would this be pretty durable in the pede? Will it plug into my futaba reciever? How much torque does it have(if you know)? Thanks for the help. HOPEFULLY i can go to the LHS tomorrow, and if i do i will try to get an 87t spur gear, some kind of bearings, and a 2055 servo if it will work fine. Thanks

I picked one of those 2055 servos up for like 10 bucks used. Its poop. Loud as hell, and doesnt have much more torque than a standard servo. Get a 625 mg from hitec. :)

I agree, get a 625 servo from Hitec. I have a couple of them, and use one in my Stampede. Plenty of torque and durability. I havent regretted buying it at all.
I ran my pede a bit today but it was pretty cold so runtimes still werent great. Hopefully its nicer outside tomorrow.

I would highly recommend the bigger bearings and carriers, I promise you will start blowing them out more often, especially as they get older or if you ever get them wet. Your going to spend the same amount of money replacing the smaller ones. Plus the hubs have the rpm warranty. Everything else just get as you break... Don't spend more than you have too.

Well, ill see about getting the 5x11's. So thetraxxas 2055 is not that great for a stampede? How much $ is the 625mg? I just want a reliable servo that is cheap, and would like to not have to order it, and just buy it at the LHS. Thanks for the help.

I have a reliable, pretty cheap servo (got tired of destroying the gears in the stock servo). I bought a JR Racing Z590 for $45 at the LHS. It has metal gears and plenty of torque. Sounds like it is pretty similar to the 645 that everyone recommends.
I agree with the upgrade as you break stuff method. For example, with the Novak SS BL system I thought I would strip the idler gear really fast, but I haven't yet. I'll buy an aluminum one if I strip the stock one. Also, I have 5x8 bearings and haven't busted them yet either. 5x11 would still be a great idea though.
Pudder: I see you have the Novak BL also. I have a question for you (or anyone else): I experience radio glitching at range, and I'm not sure if its the BL or not. The reason I'm not sure is that I'm missing the end off my antenna from a crash. I've done a test: I drive the pede slowly away from me, and the farther away it gets, it starts stuttering and I start to lose control, until when its a couple hundred feet away I can hardly control it at all, it just drives crazily in bursts.
Any ideas? Obviously I'm gonna patch on some antenna wire to make the antenna the correct length again, but help is still appreciated.

I think i might go to the LHS today, so i think if/when i go, im gonna try to get the following things: Guestimated prices
1) 5x11x2.5 bearings(8) $20
2) 87 tooth spur gear $2
3) stub axles(2) $5
4) no solder motor connectors $3
5) RPM 5x11 bearing carriers $10 for front/back
I might chicken out once i get there, but well see what happens. How much will 4 5x11 carriers cost me(2front and 2 back)? If i get this stuff today, ill have my truck in good shape to run. Also, how much will 8 5x11 bearings cost? Thanks for the help. I would definatley buy some 5x8's if i knew they would hold up, because i really dont want to spend about $30 on just bearings, but i also dont want them to break, so i dont know:confused: . Ill try to go with 5x11's, but well see. Do all my prices sound about right for what im getting? Getting the 5x8's will take about $10 off the price, and ik cheap, so im probablly gonna come back with 5x8's if those prices are right, but well see. Thanks for the help

Ya, I have been having this problem as well, and the range seems to get lower when battery voltage does. I e-mailed Novak about putting a 4AA pack like nitro cars have in my truck with the SS. He told me I should be able to do this as long as I dont turn the esc on or something.
I just gotta find some batts and I'll try it out :)

can't remember if i asked this already... Anyone have rpm rims that continue to fall of becuase the axle isnt long enough for the locknut to get a grip, I have the right hexes but I am beginning to think that they mispackaged my rims... If you're going to spend money on bearings I don't htink that 5x11's cost much more than 5x8's, you just have to spring for the carries, eventually I bet you will upgrade to the 5x11's though, its only a matter of time before they break. My idler gear, I managed to strip that with the stock stinger motor, lol. I went right to the aluminum idler too!

Maybe contact RPM?
I'd go for the 5x11's for shizle. I'd have blown up so many 5x8's by now, and not to mention you use RPM parts with that, which are great. :D
I've been sittin around all morning sippin beer and I made a 4 cell reciever pack, the AA's I found were a bit worn out and the pack sits around mid 5 volts, I'm going to try it after I charge a pack and see if it changed anything for glitch wise.
I should buy some fresh AA's tomorrow if this works good :)

Well I ended up only making it back with:
10, 5x8 bearings ($25)
1 84t spur gear(didnt have 87t)(almost $4)
2 stub axles ($5)
2 aluminum round pipes 1ft long a piece(1.19 a piece)
They didnt have 5x11 carriers at the LHS, so i just got 5x8's which were still expensive. I have everything in the truck now(except aluminum pieces which are for my homemade clod chassis i started on today), and the wheels are a lot tighter, and it is just smoother. I jumped just a little with no problems. I just put in the new spur, but i havent tried it out. Thanks for the help guys;) .

I noticed in one of your pics the antenna is not sticking out of the top of the blue tube. Is your antenna shortened? Mine is missing about 4 inches off the end. So maybe that is the problem. I don't see how it could be the BL that is screwing up, since the problem clearly gets worse at greater range. I figure (and I hope) it's a radio glitch.
What do you think? Antenna length?

My antenna is the stock length. It's like 5mm short from sticking out the hole. I will replace it because there may be a break somewhere in it, I'm not sure.
I took my pede to the track today with the BL and threw some foam tires on it. It wheelies like mad! Very fast too, was a blast to drive. Next weekend hopefully I can arrange a monster truck class so I can race it.
Weather's been getting better here too lately so I should be able to go outside and drive my pede soon!
About pede pics, go to traxxas's message board, look around the picture and stampede forums, theres lots of pics. I've seen some Jeep CJ-8's on pede, looks good.

I have been having some motor problems with my P2K though, and i think it needs new brushes:( . I guess ill put the stinger back on it for a while, but it actually runs pretty good with the stinger too in my opinion, but ive never drove anything with a 15 turn either, so i dont have much to go by.lol Next time i drive it down there, i might get some pictures and post them. Thanks! Yeah, I wouldn't be interested in cutting those tires. They are hard to get and quite a bit bigger than stock, plus they are as grippy as the Masher 2000's! I'm not as happy with my 2nd Novak system because this one runs way hotter than my first system from last year when they were first released. I ran the one all last year geared 18/87 with Masher 2000's and with 7cell GP3300's, but this one thermal's with that set-up, so I went down to 17/87 gearing and only 6cell GP3300's, but it still shut down the other day with that set-up!
I now have it geared 15/87, but its way too low geared like that. Lost quite a bit of top-end too! Anyone else here have the Novak in theirs and having it thermal?

Yes, the Speed Gem 2 motors are discontinued. They were replaced by the Speed Gem 2 Pro line of motors, which use p-94 endbell, d4 can, and regular machine wound armature available in different winds than before.
I would highly suggest getting one of those, it may be more expensive in the beginning, but it is rebuildable and makes good power.

Your runtimes will suffer with a 16t.
I had a 16t and did not strip a idler.
Even though it is lower turn (usually means less torque) it makes more power, so it will have more rpm's and torque.
With my old pede and 16t triple I was getting wheelies, your results may vary depending on gearing.
I do not know of a 16x1 motor.

Hey guys. Been thinking of a nice Pede kit to start off with and use my spike esc and revenge of the monster stock motor...that is if I dont sell the gear and spares with my TL-01. Anyone else running stock motors in their pedes? I'm not looking for all out killer speed. Just a decent 25-30mph with sufficient run time is fine enough for me. As of right now im running the stock motor, or a 27t P2K. But, tomorrow im ordering a duratrax esc that will handle a 16t motor, and ill get a 16t motor sometime. The stock pede goes about 23mph. Maybe a little faster with your motor. I have mine geared low for a lot of torque. They are fun, evenin stock configuration for just bashing, and if u get one, u should really try jumping it some. I love jumping mine, and ive never broken a part. They dont make the kit anymore, but im sure you could buy a roller on ebay.

You should try to get a stampede if you can. About a year and a half ago I saw a stampede for the first time, and I just wanted one myself. Since I've gotten mine I've fixed most of the major weaknesses, and it is one of the funnest trucks I have to beat around. Jumps great, is very managable in the air, and it survives a good spill too.

Today i finally ordered a duratrax intelispeed 16t forward/reverse esc, and a trinity 16t double chrominum motor from tower hobbies:D . Will i see a lot more power out of this than my P2K 27t motor? Will this motor have quite a bit of low end torque? Should be here by friday, so ill let you guys know how i like it. I also pulled my pede last night at a rc truck pull that my dads buddy has started having fairly weekly. With just the 27t P2K, and my truck weighing 6 lbs(1lb added to front), I pulled 26lbs, about 27ft, and 30ft is a full pull. I also bought 4 tires, and rims(tires like new) for my truck, from 1 of the fuys there for $15 for all 4 tires and rims. I really like the tires, and they hook up well, and the front rims are stock chrome rims, and the back ones, are aftermarket chrome rims. It looks pretty good with them, besides the rims bieng different kinds. The tires are wider than masher 2000's, and about the same height. Here is a pic.:

You were using an MSC? Those are the worst! lol
Your truck will be alot quicker with the new motor, and it should pull a bit further.

No, i wasnt using the msc. I just havent took off the resistors yet from running it this winter.lol I am using a duratrax intelispeed auto-sport forward/brake esc, but it will only 20t motors, and it doesent have reverse, which is also a feature i like a lot.

A couple posts back someone asked if I had put a stock motor in my pede...
I have ran a few stock motors in my pede. I liked them, but I found that the performance of something like a 19 turn is much better than a stock.
Why do you ask?
----------------------------------------
I just got a new set of tires this weekend, already cut and mounted. I drove my truck outside of the track building on sunday at lunch. I got some great air and beat the hell out of my truck. My bl was acting up a bit so I had to stop running, and havent had time to work on my truck since.

Pudder- I asked because I currently have a duratrax spike and a monster horsepower (stock motor) in my TL-01. It's pretty fast with the Orion Vmaxx 2400 packs and was wondering how it would do in the Pede with stock gearing. Not sure of what kind of run time I'll expect, speed, or the overall performance for a big truck. How heavy is the pede? It's either A) get the pede, B) sell my TL-01 RTR (with elec upgrades and spares for them) or C) sell the Sport NT RTR with glow starter, half a qt of fuel and fuel bottle and get the Hot Bodies Lightning RTR buggy. The pede still lingers in my head as it will be great for driving at my sisters house (which I'm currently visiting right at this moment typing this post :) ). Lots of grass, hills, curbs to hop off, rocks to climb, etc. Also its the kind of area with old folks so you know most of them prefer the peace. In the end though, I still remember this is the area my stock TL-01 tackled without a problem so the TL-01 may stay while I get myself a larger, more powerful offroad vehicle.

03-22-2004, 07:11 PM
Get rid of the LowTec Losi and get a pede :D;)
About the stock motor, the Monster Horsepower is a higher-rpm motor better suited for buggies and tc's but I'm sure it would be fine to use on the pede, performance might be okay deppending the condition your motor is in.

I have nothing against the Losi, just that I was looking for something bigger and mostly 4wd. I'll see how it goes later on.

I looked and remembered that was just after I got my pede, I was still using bushings I think, and the stock Stinger motor with a DuraTrax Sprint ESC. 6 cell packs too. It sure went pretty damn good though eh? :D
Saboteur
03-24-2004, 12:32 AM
I can't believe that was the stinger motor movin the Pede like that in all the 6 stampede videos  Must be really powerful. I thought the pede went like 16mph or something like that. The speed your going appears to be in the low to mid 20s. If I remember correctly(according to trinity's site) the Monster HP motor has more power and rpm than the p2k and p2k2. In my TL-01 it really moves. How much faster do you think my monster will be compared to the stinger? For a big MT like the pede, thats quite an impressive stock speed. I'm interested. What packs did you run with the Pede and what kind of run time were you getting?
jdm3849
03-24-2004, 02:05 AM
I believe he used 6-cell 3300's.
The stock Stampede's top speed is 18.4mph.
Yes, the MHP stock motor makes more power and RPM's, compared to the P2K and P2K2. Compared to almost any stock motor, I believe.
I cannot tell you the difference you will notice in speed, you will notice it though. It will be all around quicker.
The Pede is actually not very large, it is simple and light, also has high CG so turns can be scary, which makes it fun.

On another note, I was in my rc room yesterday and I saw an old cut up touring car body, so I thought I'd try it on the pede. It looks pretty neat. I'll get pics later.
I'm also going to be going to Grand Forks, ND for 3 days next monday! I'm forsurely bringing my pede along! I hope to get a video out of it as well. :) Hopefully my Swami Bar will come in before I leave too. I ordered it a few weeks ago and he just sent it out sometime last week.

Well, ive had the 16t double, trinity chrominum in for just 2 days, and the stock plastic idler is toast.lol I took the gearbox apart, and sure enough that was the problem. I was going up a small hill with some really thick grass, and it started bouncing, and i keep my slipper locked down tight, and when it came down once, that was the end of it.lol :o The question is. Since im going to get an aluminum idler, will i have any radio interference? Also, will it keep this from happening again, or will i strip out my big drive gear with the spider gears in it? I like to run with the slipper locked, so would this be ok when i get an aluminum idler? I was kind of planning on this happening, but not this soon.lol Oh well. This is the first thing ive ever broke on my stampede in the year ive had it. Thanks

cummins: I do not believe you should have any radio interference, even though I run metal idler and derlin top gear. I know people with cheaper AM radios that have the aluminum idler and have not yet had any problems.
Question: Is the spur gear supposed to have some wobble to it? Because even if I tighten the nut all the way down it will still shake..

I do not think there are any dodge truck bodies that would fit the Stampede.
The only Dodge truck body that I know of is the ST by Pro-line for the RC10T3, and the Ram 1500 (new, big grill style) made for the Savage/Maxx, which may fit, but would be much larger than the Pede body.

03-28-2004, 01:41 PM
As long as your gear mesh is pretty tight all the way around, i wouldnt wory about it.
You don't want your gear mesh to be tight. You need to have a slight amount of play between the pinion and spur. Although it may wobble a bit, adjust your gear mesh the best you can, and try to figure out the problem. I know mine can wobble a bit because it has play on the balls between the slipper plates, although I'm good at meshing so its always good on mine.
I just got my Swami-Bar on, I had to cut the tailgate off the back of my body to allow for clearance though. My drive yoke was also stripped so I tried putting some CA in to restore the threads, but that didn't work so I drilled some new holes 90 degrees to the stock ones and threaded some small screws similar to the stock ones in there. The threads are super tight so it should stay down. I'm going to Grand Forks, ND tomorrow so I need to have it all ready for the hardcore bashing.
---------
Cummins Driver- about stripping your diff gear, I wouldnt worry about it. I've only stripped one differential gear, that was with the metal idler a 19t and a locked slipper with several hardcore bashing days. I've been beating on it with my BL and nothing has gave. I wouldnt get the delrin top gear though, then that will be the weak point in your tranny.
Wow, I've typed a lot...

Did you install the ball bearings in place of the pegs?
pudder
03-28-2004, 02:24 PM
Ya, those pegs are stupid pieces of crap. They always fall out too when you take the spur off. I say be done with it, get a 86 Kimbrough spur gear with balls. It works much better, you dont have to worry about the balls falling out, and it has good performance, although I never use my slipper anyways but I hated those damn balls.
jdm3849
03-28-2004, 02:42 PM
I think I will do that, I hate having to balance the spur and have the pegs fall out right when I put the nut one. lol
I have been visiting www.misbehavin-rc.com , and I have the AE long radial heatsink and am planning on dremeling the tranny to make it fit. I know heatsinks work but do not know if it will weaken it (claims it won't)

I'm getting bored and getting new ideas.
I REALLY like the new Pro-line Landcruiser body, but if I were to fit it onto my pede I think it would look too big for the wheels/tires. So I would like to buy a used set of Maxx wheels/tires off eBay (seeing as they cost well over $100 for the 40 series).

03-28-2004, 09:41 PM
Sorry for the late reply, I took a nap that went a bit long...
The Swami-Bar protects the whole rear of your truck basically. The soft rubber wheels cusion landings on the rear end, and there is no chance of you hitting your motor on the ground with the bar, which is good to have 100% protection. Not to mention, it looks cool and provides endless wheelies.

03-31-2004, 08:52 PM
Well I'm back from Grand Forks now. I had a good time, but I have mono or some crap like that, so I didnt feel the best to run my pede a lot. However I did run the crap out of it. I put the Swami-Bar to the test, never put a slight tweak in it at all, just a few minor scratches on the aluminum plate and some scrapes on the rims. :)
I bashed hard and stripped 3 ballstud holes, 3 ballcups, I also blew apart my servo saver, and stripped 2 spurs. :p When I got back home I went to the hobby shop and bought a set of steel yokes, new servo saver, another pinion, and some more ball-ends as well as some long screws to replace them.
I got a little bit of video footage, I would have got more if I were feeling well, but I have enough for a small video. I might work on that tomorrow.
On another note, I tried some American beer. It tastes like beer flavored water!
I'm also thinking about making an animated video too, kinda like a clay cartoon? Anyone have any ideas for a little story?
cummins driver

Cool  . Sounds like you bashed the heck out of it.lol I got my aluminum idler in saturday, and everything is working fine again now. Almost to much low-end power.lol I cant take off fast without it wheelieng.lol Its fun though. I have pulled a pulling sled with it once with the P2K in it, and im wanting to try it again now, since i have the 16t in. It should pull quite a bit better i would think, because i can get plenty of traction. I mounted red 2 L.E.D. lights from radioshack with some little chrome covers around them onto my pede body sunday, and it looks neat at night. I really need a new body sometime though, but if i get one, i might mount some green ones in the front, and red in the back. See you guys later.

Actually, i just now figured out a way to keep from getting mud in it. I took an old toilet paper roll, and cut it in half(after toilet paper is used.lol) and just slid it over the motor, so that no mud can get to it. The motor wires going to the esc hold it on good enough, so im gonna try it like that.

I have a 16 turn double trinity chrominum in my truck with 13/84 gearing, and wheelies are not a problem with a good charged pack on a high traction surface where it doesent just spin the tires.
Go lower on your pinion, and you should see wheelies. Sounds to me like your over geared anyway. Good luck

I agree on the overgeared part. Drop a 14 pinion in there and see how that works. Make sure that your motor is always clean and performing well, and wheelies shouldn't be a problem. I got wheelies in my stampede with a stock motor even. :)

Im just curious Pudder. How old are you? Anyway. I love running my pede with the 16 turn double. It pulls wheelies big time off the line, and still tops out at 24mph geared 13/84! I dont think thats to bad myself for a monster truck with awesome low end torque like that, and a single speed tranny, and electric and still topping out at 24mph. I jumped it once or twice today just where the grass hits the road, and there is like a 1 inch tall hump, and i hit it at wide open, and it landed on its top, and flipped back over, and I drove it back to me, and it didnt hurt a thing, and that was without the body on. I have never broken a thing on it except the idler, and steering servo gears. I have an Evader ST with a 15t double, and my pede with a 16t double, and i believe my pede is faster really, and i know its more durable for sure. I couldnt get rid of my pede unless I had to, or got offered a very good deal, or amount of $ for it. And then id probablly still have to buy another.

I'd say thats definitely too high. I run with stock tires, and I'm geared at 15/87. This gearing provides me with endless wheelies, excellent torque, good runtime, low motor & esc temp, as well as a decent top speed.
I should have a small video in a little bit as well.

Jeez,Yea thats faster than mine. I guess I am too high geared. Another question,My friend has the 4200 in the Bandit, and it dont seem all that fast. I think it should be faster than what it is. What would you recommend gearing for that? Rite now hes got it at 18/70 or 81 tooth. I was thinking he should gear down on both ends.. 16/87 sound good?

04-27-2004, 08:51 AM
The 4200 is made to perform similar to a stock brushed motor, which is the reason for your friends slowness. Novak reccomends gearing the 4200 one tooth down from stock, therefore, he would want to gear it 17/81.

Are the driveshafts turning? If they are, then it could be a broke/gone drive pin or something, but if they dont spin, then its probably an idler gear. What kind of motor is he running? If its the idler gear, then buy an aluminum one, and put in there, and then the tranny is prety bulletproof unless you have some absolutley awesome motor in there.lol

Well, i cant even drive my pede because i dont have a working reciever for it, and i dont think the T-MAXX reciever will work since it doesent have BEC. I like my pede better than my T-MAXX to tell you the truth. Its funny, but i do. The rear end is out of the T-MAXX so i have to get in there and fix that, and it needs a gas tank. I think i might try to sell it on ebay or something after i get it fixed, and be done with that. Then ill buy a new reciever for my pede, and some new slipper pegs(in t-maxx), and get back to driving it again. The T-MAXX just doesent have enough power to suit me with the factory pro .15, and i dont feel like upgrading it, and plus i get my liscence Teusday, so that will pay for some diesel money. Talk to you all later.

I think Losi springs fit the Traxxas shocks, you might find a good spring set there. Right now I'm running with the stock springs, 30 wt AE oil and 2 hole pistons with about 1 cm of preload.
---------------
Anyways, since my last post I've gotten my pede back up and running with my axle fixed, and took apart the gearbox to clean it. My gearbox seems to get a lot of dirt in it. I really don't like the design of the gearbox case. Next time I might put some electrical tape over the middle where the cases come together.
So with my truck together, I went out to drive it. I was just getting warmed up when I hit my jump weird which was enough to snap the rest of my rear chassis brace off and snap my chassis at the rear where the screw holes are. Needless to say, I'm pretty put off now that I have to spend time and money waiting for new parts :(
btw- the Novak SS is still going strong. I havent noticed a performance fade at all. :)

You have no other choice, deal with it.
The gearing is not a factor. The old tamiya plugs are very inneficient and loose contact over time from being plugged in/out. Since there is now a larger gap, the electricity has to jump from male to female ends and it creates heat, which melts the plastic.

Guys, my pede is still acting glitchy. It was not an issue with antenna length, I've fixed that problem. There are very short bursts of full throttle when I accelerate or drive SLOWLY. It doesn't happen or isnt noticeable at all if I'm going WOT. So if I accelerate slowly or drive at say half throttle, the pede jumps randomly. This gets worse as range increases. The other day I tried changing antenna positions so there was no horizontal antenna wire running along the chassis, and that didnt seem to do anything. It might've gotten a LITTLE better, but basically the problem was exactly the same. It would be difficult to keep power and signal wires much farther away from each other I think. I basically have the stock wiring configuration, with the exception of the Novak BL system now instead of the Stinger and XL-1.
So any other suggestions to fix this? I know I've asked before but the problem persists. I plan on moving the wiring around a little in hope of finding a quick fix, but I still need suggestions. I don't want to have to upgrade to an FM radio system. Someone on these forums recently mentioned a "ferret ring" or something like that...anyone know what that is and if it might help? It had something to do with the wire from the receiver to the ESC.
Also, is it possible that this is a problem with the Novak BL? The glitching gets worse at long range, which makes me think it's a radio problem. But it also only seems to happen at low throttle...so maybe its the motor controller somehow?
Thanks for any help :)

I know the problem you are having. I had the same thing happen to me when I first got the Novak SS. Since then, I have changed my antenna mounting position so there is about 10 mm of antenna before the tube, and I also mounted my ESC differently against my shock tower.
My stampede seems to work just fine now. I get far range, enough to go a few hundred feet at least.

Looks as if that body has been to hell and back pudder! I mounted the ESC in my pede like you said. I've run it once since then, and I honestly wasn't paying much attention to possible interference. I did not notice any while running the truck, but I wasn't looking for it. Thanks for the tip in any case.
Also, on that run I broke a stub axle bearing finally. I was going to just replace it with a spare 5x8 bearing I had, but I had run the truck more even with the broken bearing and the bearing carrier was sort of ground up on that side. So I ordered 5x11 bearings and carriers 2 days ago. I had known about this upgrade for a long time, but never did it b/c I had no problems with my 5x8 bearings. I also want to get Big Bore shocks soon, since I've had a bit of a problem with the right rear shock cap popping off. But I currently can't locate any to buy. Any other method you guys know of of reinforcing the stock shocks? Duct tape? :)
And just double-checking: When I eventually buy Big Bores, I need the "XX-Long" shocks for the rear and "Long" for the front, right?
Thanks
pudder
06-09-2004, 11:53 PM
Good plan on getting the larger bearings. I almost need to replace some of my 5x11's soon. :(
A good way to have your stock shocks but a simple cheap fix, just buy aluminum shock caps. I did this and I have never had a shock cap pop off since Igot them. I think Hot Bodies makes some good aluminum shocks, and for a lot cheaper than Traxxas shocks. Maybe check out their line of products and see about that.
I'm pretty sure that you are right about the required shock lengths as well. :)
SS Pede
06-18-2004, 11:12 PM
Well I've installed the new bearings, they work. There is a pin that goes down through the bearing carrier on the front wheels, I don't know what it's called but the carrier hinges on it. One of them is bent on my pede. I don't know how long it's been like that but I plan on leaving it alone b/c there is no noticeable problem with it.
Pudder - I've changed the mounting position on my Novak BL controller, but the glitching problem is still there. I guess I don't care that much at this point, it's annoying but not a big deal overall. I would, however, like to fix it eventually. Somewhere on these forums someonce mentioned a problem with the capacitor that is attached to the ESC, and a kit to fix it or something? I'll have to research that. For now I'm just going to try to get my GP3300 pack to charge consistently (MRC 959...I know its a cruddy charger but it seemed like a great deal at the time).
I ordered aluminum shock caps today also, just 2 for the rear. It seems the rear end takes harder hits than the front, since I have only stripped shock caps or broken bearings in the rear. It makes sense, since the weight is back there. So hopefully my pede will be ready to take on my friend's RC10GT when he comes out in a couple weeks...can't wait!

I really need those aluminum shock caps to arrive. Yesterday the rear shock cap I've been having trouble with popped off without the pede even going off a jump! I don't know exactly what happened but I was driving on grass and pavement and there must've been some stress on the suspension (I wasn't even going fast), and the cap popped right off. Luckily the diaphragm stayed on the shock so the oil didn't spill all over the place. Imagine my surprise when I lightly hit the throttle to bring the truck over to me and it didn't move! The suspension had extended so far that the CVD dogbone had fallen out of the outdrive! It was an easy fix though.
I'm still open to suggestions on the glitching problem. I might give Novak a call, or try a few other random things in hopes of fixing the issue. My setup is very similar to yours now Pudder, but it still glitches.
pudder
06-20-2004, 05:25 PM
Hmm, thats strange that you're still having problems. I find that I get better range with certain vehicles than others, but my glitching has stopped.
You'll be happy with those aluminum shock caps. Make sure to use some Teflon tape if you're not using the diaphrams. They'll leak otherwise. I used to have the diaphrams but I bottomed out my suspension a lot and they got torn up in the shocks. I think I'll buy some new ones. :)
Next weekend I'll have my pede going again. :)

06-20-2004, 06:19 PM
You're using the stock radio system pudder? Also, the servo-ESC wire could be made neater, it's just sort of flopping around. I don't think that would really make it glitch but I might as well try everything. Someone also mentioned an issue with the capacitor on the motor controller, a replacement kit or something. I just hope I don't have to ditch this Novak system, because otherwise I love it.
pudder
06-20-2004, 06:37 PM
I am using JR XR3 radio and receiver with Hitec 625 servo.
I make sure that my esc/receiver wire is in place decently, I dont like it flopping around. I dont think that would be a cause of glitching, but you should have it secured down.
If you look in the attatched picture, you will see that towards the rear of the chassis, I have put a screw in and used a small zip-tie to secure the wire to it with. I then tuck the wire in the chassis leading up to the receiver.
http://64.42.204.232/hosted/DSC07721.jpg
I haven't really heard any glitch solution kits for the SS, but I havent been in the spotlight of consumer feedback since I've been having a fine time with my system. Perhaps it is something other than the system like your crystals? Or does your radio work fine with a standard brushed setup?
SS Pede
06-20-2004, 11:29 PM
As far as I know, the radio worked fine when I had a brushed setup in the pede. The problem is I don't know when exactly this started happening...I think though that the problem has existed the whole time I've had my BL. I guess I could always try switching back to brushed just to double check. I have my ESC/receiver wire in almost exactly the same place as yours, except it cuts across a bit more when it gets to the ESC, rather than going farther back and then taking a sharp turn to the left. I could also try moving the 3 big ESC-->motor wires farther away from the smaller bundle of sensor wires (or whatever those several little ones are). Those 2 groups of wires are right next to each other in my setup, because both go through the gap under the body posts.
Once those shock caps come in I can experiment more with little things like that. I want to eliminate all possible causes before I have to admit it's a problem with the BL itself, or the radio system. Is your radio FM? And if so, did you have this problem with the FM system, or an AM one? It would be nice if it's just the crystals or something. Maybe I'll have to reinstall the brushed setup just to make sure.
pudder
06-20-2004, 11:44 PM
I've tried running the 3 power wires around the other side of the shock tower, opposite from the sensor wires, and also running side by side. Personally, I havent noticed a difference between the two.
My radio is FM as well.
SS Pede
06-21-2004, 11:10 PM
Thanks for all the feedback pudder. The wire connecting the servo to the receiver couldn't cause this sort of glitching, could it? I can make that a little neater, maybe move it away from the receiver. I think the big test will be to switch back over to a brushed setup and see if it glitches. If it still glitches, then my Novak is fine, and I can try new crystals or something like that. If it doesn't glitch, then there is some issue with the way I have the Novak setup, or an issue with the Novak itself (I hope not, but that may just be it). I'll probably switch over to brushed sometime this week and give it a try.
Again, thanks for the advice pudder.
SS Pede
06-24-2004, 10:06 PM
Well I switched over to brushed setup today and I didn't detect any glitching. So I reinstalled the Novak in the least-likely-to-glitch way possible, and that'll do. I'll run the pede with my friend when he arrives from California, and sometime I'll email Novak. The manual does mention a damaged capacitor as a possible cause for glitching, so maybe that's it. I appreciate your patience and support pudder :)

heheh not sure what you ordered? When I order something I know EXACTLY what to expect in the mail! I installed aluminum shock caps yesterday, haven't run the truck yet. And I've reinstalled the Novak all nice. Seems, from reading the Traxxas forums, that others have glitching problems with the SS 5800 and their Pedes. I wonder if the dimensions of the truck just don't work too well for the Novak BL setup? I dunno. I'll deal with it and shoot Novak an email sometime. I wonder if it is a problem with the Novak itself, that can be fixed by sending in the system, or if it can't really be fixed unless I upgrade to FM? Only time will tell. As long as I drive full throttle, there is no glitching!!!
Have fun with your 1:1 truck as well.

lol, I wasn't sure if you were talking about a full size pickup truck or a body! Have fun with the body then, and report back with your thoughts on how it works. Eventually I'll need a new body when I trash the stock one. It seems that Proline has discontinued their F-150 and Silverado Pede bodies? I definitely want one that works well with the Pede, not too big or anything.

I got my Chevy Silverado HD body today and will hopefully paint it this week if I can find a nice scheme to do.
I'll post pics when I'm done.
I also took my pede to the track today with me. I did a little bit of bashing, jumped some barriers and a small dirt pile in the back. :)

hehe pudder, I hardly pay attention to my slipper...maybe I should? I think a while ago I sort of set it about right, but I don't really know. So far I haven't destroyed the idler gear with the Novak BL, though. Maybe I'm just lucky.
Also, is the Silverado HD body made specifically for the stampede? I might pick one up in the future if it is.

Hey all, I'm in search of a small monster truck, preferably electric, and the Stampede caught my eye. But, I have a few questions...how durable is it? I mean could i be ramping curbs and boxes and going over dirt mounds and such without worries? Also, how good is aftermarket support for it, like aluminum/titanium pieces, replacement parts, etc? I already own an EMT (HPI) and I love it but its based on a stadium truck, so I'm looking for something thats a little more rugged and off-road capable....are there other trucks to look at?
BTW, does a Stampede pull wheelies? I'm a sucker for stuff like that!

There are a few weaknesses in the stock stampede, though overall it seems quite durable. One weakness is the stock steering servo. The gears tend to strip, I stripped a couple sets of gears on jumps and impacts, then moved on to a metal gear servo. Another weakness is shock caps. They can strip/pop off on hard jump landings. 4 aluminum shock caps, about $25 or so (estimate). There are also aluminum shocks, but the aluminum caps should do if money is an issue. Third weakness: idler gear. It is supposedly the weak point in the tranny and can be stripped if you put in a faster motor. I say "supposedly" because my Novak SS5800 has not yet stripped it, go figure. Oh yea, and bearings. So 4 weaknesses. If you upgrade to 5x8 bearings, they can break relatively easily. RPM makes 5x11 bearing carriers.
That said, my pede just took quite a beating today, 4 packs in a row, hitting rocks, big jumps and stuff. No real damage except a front shock cap because I haven't switched the front caps to aluminum yet. In terms of upgrades, I haven't seen many exotic metal pieces like those that are so common with the maxxes. Traxxas makes aluminum shocks, some company makes titanium turnbuckles. I have seen carbon fiber chassis as well, I forget the company that makes them. At www.swami-rc.com you can buy nice aluminum wheelie bars and chassis braces.
Wheelies? Not in stock form, unless maybe you gear down. Novak BL? yes. But you don't need a motor that fast to do wheelies. I dont have much experience with other mod motors in the pede though.

thanks for the reply, money isn't really an issue at the moment, and I know the stampede is cheap cost wise to start with.....I already have battery packs, tools, charger, etc cuz i own 2 electric vehicles already, so the stampede sounds like a deal to me

I just discovered that a bent shock shaft can be made sort of straight again with mere finger power! Cheap fix, I love it.
HPI Fan, I didn't mean to list off a bunch of problems and make the Pede sound bad. Any vehicle has weaknesses. The Pede is a fun truck, I doubt you will be disappointed. If you already have packs and a charger and stuff, it is especially a good deal.

I've been in the city at my Grandma's house for the last 3 days.
I took my pede along, and did it took a good beating for 3 days strait. I never broke anything but I busted up my black chevy body even more :D. I think next week I'll paint up my silverado body, maybe even sooner. I was mostly driving around on concrete so my rears are nearly balled now. Good thing I have another pair :)
I think I might need to send in my SS5800 motor though. After running the truck yesterday I discovered my motor shaft about 1/4" extra sticking out. I think that the shaft is slipping on the magnets inside. I'm going to take it apart soon and then contact Novak. :(

I think I worked the slipper clutch loose the other day when I gave the Pede a good thrashing. I can't wheelie anymore, not even on pavement! I guess I'll have to tighten it up. Also, I bent my Swami Bar that day! Must've been a big hit. The bar is a little bent, not severely. I was surprised though, because I know those things are tough!

I got the Novak BL in my pede. I was driving it today, and I heard this weird noise,at low speed, and I look at it,and the output shaft popped out a little bit, then I took it apart, and noticed the magnet,on the shasft moves up and down. Could I send this in to Novak for a new,or new system,Or Is it possible to fix. I've had it at least two months. Thanks.

Yonny- that is one of the problems that the Novak has had. If your system is still under warranty you can probably get an entirely new one for free. Other people have had the same thing happen to their systems.
I finally stripped my idler gear! Let me elaborate, because the circumstances are interesting and a little bit puzzling. When I drove my truck the other day I thought the slipper clutch was looser than before, since I had done some hard running recently. It wouldn't wheelie and it definitely seemed like something was slipping. So I tightened it back up to about where I thought it should be (though I'm not too confident in my slipper clutch abilities). Next day, I drove the truck again. This time it wheelied like crazy, even at half throttle it could wheelie. It seemed to wheelie more easily than ever before. So maybe my slipper clutch actually had been slipping a little ever since I got my Novak, and it stopped slipping when I tightened it up the other day, so it wheelied even more. But later on in the same run where it was wheelieing a LOT, it stopped doing wheelies. Not just a dying battery, it sounded like something was slipping. Fine, I thought, I guess the slipper clutch somehow loosened up again. In retrospect, maybe it was the idler gear in its death throes. So I kept driving around, experimenting with full-throttle starts and stuff, and I noticed the Novak glitching was getting significantly worse! It was simply more jumpy, even at very short range. About that time I began hearing a not very nice noise coming from the truck, and I was pretty sure I had stripped something. So I turned off the truck (which was interesting in itself, because the Novak was actually jumping a tiny bit even with zero throttle, as I was trying to hit the on/off switch).
Yep, I took apart the tranny (my first time doing it, actually) and the idler is missing 5 or 6 teeth. So I'll clean out the whole thing with motor spray and install an aluminum idler gear. I plan on keeping the steel top gear. I have this (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX0276&P=ML) lube, which I plan to apply liberally to all the gears. I don't want the metal gears causing interference or grinding away at each other, which I know has happened to some people with very fast motors in their Pede's. I've seen pictures of aluminum idler gears that actually have sharpened teeth from wearing against the metal top gear, so the sharpened idler eats away at the differential! Interesting.
Anyway, thanks for listening to my story, any advice or comments are welcome. :)

Sounds like a good plan dude. I've been using my metal idler for over a year now and it and the top gear are still in top shape. :)
I also got my new Silverado body painted too. I was going to take some pictures today but the mosquitos wouldnt leave me alone, so maybe tomorrow during the day I'll get some good pictures. I think the body really turned out good. I did a blue (front) to black (rear) fade, and applied only a few decals for a nice clean look.
Unfortunately, I am another person to experience the magnets coming off of the motor shaft of my 5800. :( I sent Novak an email, and hopefully they will replace it without cost.
I might be addidng to my collection soon too, I'm thinking about getting a Tamiya TLT-1 Rockbuster. :)

SS-Pede, Not to long ago, Didnt you say that some of your antenna wire had been accidentaly removed?
SS Pede
07-14-2004, 05:30 PM
Yes I did. I replaced the receiver (unable/too lazy to carefully solder on a new wire), in hopes of solving the glitching I was experiencing with the Novak SS5800. It didn't solve the problem, the system still glitches. The other day when it couldn't even sit still was very interesting. On the traxxas forums someone complained about the same thing happening, I think on the same day. He blamed it on a solar flare, you know they cause interference with cell phones and stuff. So it could've been that. Also, today I noticed that the antenna on my new receiver broke at the base, because I had the wire turning a sharp corner next to the receiver and I guess it wore out or something. I reinstalled the OLD receiver and used the newer receiver's wire to add some length to the antenna, though I don't think it actually had enough missing to affect signal reception.

ANY amount of the antenna missing will dramatically effect the performance of a receiver. Receiver wires are "Tuned" to a certain length, to properly function in their frequency band. Such as 72 mhz AM, 27 MHz AM, 75 MHZ FM and the other FM band.
I do not know an extensive amount of info on this topic, but I do know enough to be able to lend a helping opinion.

We'll see how everything works out once I get my truck up and running with an aluminum idler gear. I was hopeful in the beginning (when I bought the new receiver with full-length antenna) that the Novak glitching would stop, but it didn't. So the 4-6" missing off the end of the antenna apparently was not causing the glitching. I'm sure it wasn't helping though! The Novak has glitched the whole time, so I was never really able to properly judge how much of an affect the broken antenna was having.

hi everyone. I'm new here. I just ordered a Stampede RTR with the ESC. I was wondering what would be the easiest things I could do to hop-up this truck when I get it. I am extremely new to the r/c world and was going on a recommendation about this truck. I was told it is very durable and can be hopped up when need be. I have read through alot of info on the forums here but it all appears greek to me. if someone could please point this beginner in the right direction for future upgrades I would really appreciate it.
thank you.
also, could someone give me an estimate of how fast these trucks are out of the box? how fast can modified ones go?
this truck will mainly be run in my backyard which is about 100' x 70'. it has some dirt and gravel hills but also has alot of grass. plus it will run on my driveway too. as far as I know there are no tracks near me for this.
EDIT: I would also like a few opinions on some decent batteries so I can run this for longer than a few minutes. and if the batt. gives me more power that would be icing on the cake.
thanks again.

A few good first upgrades to get are;
Ball bearings- help improve trucks effeciency
metal shock caps- stock ones aren't very durable and tend to pop off
metal geared servo- the stock servos are pretty weak and very easy to break. I reccomend getting a metal gear servo so you won't break servo gears like you probably will with the stock servo.
upgraded motor- the stinger might be fun for a little while but you'll want more power soon. Buying a rebuildable motor will improve your performance a lot.
About batteries, there are a few companies like Trinity and Team Orion and Reedy that offer budget packs that still have fairly high capacity but come in pairs of stick packs. Take a look around their websites to find out more.

I did find bearings on the above site but I couldn't find the metal shock caps. is one servo any different than another? how hard are they to change?

Is the Kyosho Magnetic Mayhem 22x1 non-reverse motor any good for the Stampede? It says the can and armeture are longer, but how much longer are they? Is the increase in torque very noticeable? How good is this motor on batteries?
I was looking at this motor, cause I took my 17T out and put it in a ST, and wanted a cheap replacement. Does the non-reverse motor offer any more performance than the reverse one?
Edit: Heh, I just noticed the reverse spun in reverse. I thought the non-reverse was not able to spin backwards or something.
Thanks

The mag mayhem is probably a 550 size motor, but it would fit in your stampede. I have heard that they are really good powerful motors. They are especially popular in dual motor monster trucks like the TXT, Clod, etc where torque is needed. :)
I've never personally tried these motors so I can't be too specific on performance.

I am going to get my Pede back running again. When I had it running, I was having problems with rolling. The springs seem way too stiff. My old Pede had the same springs, but not the same problem. I have tried different pistons and oil, because I didnt know what springs to get.
I want soft springs, that I can use for running on track-style conditions, not hard bashing or big air.
I hear that Losi springs fit, but I dont know what length for front or back.
Also, what rate are the stock stampede ones?
