View Full Version : New custom pipe for the Savage - need your opinion

A manufacturer is looking for some feedback on this custom pipe they're making for the HPI Savage. Offer your feedback on the pipe if you think it's something you'd like. No bashing if you don't like it, just say you don't like it. If you do like it please offer some constructive feedback or just say you like it just the way it is.

P.S. Apparently the production pipe will have a less prominent "brace" between the tuned pipe section and the "side pipe." Now it's supposedly much less visible and won't wrap around the side pipe - the "brace" will be essentially invisible from the side. The front section of the side pipe (the stinger on a conventional pipe) is also shortened by 10mm so the whole "sidepipe" is 10mm farther forward toward the front of the truck. Other than that, this is essentially how the pipe will appear.

I don't own a Savage but as a RC Entheausiast I'd say it looks pretty damn hot, Doesn't look as if it will hinder the performance much either... I bet with the long stinger it also makes a pretty deep muffled sound

Its cool but looks like it might increase engine heat and possibly restrict the exhaust flow some.

That pipe looks darn cool. Wonder how it sounds like but hopefully there will not be any issues on the exhaust flow and performance of the engine with the extended side pipe on.

Sweet, I might have to get one for my T when they come out.:)

That looks awesome. The only thing I would do would be to sell that pipe with a dummy pipe for the other side so that it would have duals. The other pipe would of course be nonfuntional but with a small brace it could be mounted with minimal effort and totally complete the effect.

Is there a web site?

oldginger
05-09-2003, 11:47 PM
1) The product information, updates and photos will be available at http://www.rchub.com soon.

2) To those who have concerns about the exhaust flow and performance, I can only tell you that the muffler works very well compare to the original pipe and most tuned pipes you can find on the market.

3) Mr. Furious, your dual-exhaust idea will be forwarded to the designer. Thanks.

only one word comes to mind when i see that thing, SICK! (if your not a california high school student, that means its bad @ $ $) that thing looks freakin bad!! but they should make one for the maxx, and maybe just a dummy for the emaxx, that would look tight (also another good word from cali) comin out of my f350 emaxx. two thumbs way way up to this company for making a really good looking pipe.

It looks great, reminds me of an old glass pack, but my question would be if the length of the stinger would affect engine performance, and also since its point outward, instead of downward, wouldn't all the oil would shoot over the tire and rear arms.

ncrego
05-10-2003, 10:42 AM
There are two things that I see that might be issues. I wouldn't want to get that because of the pipe pointing out. It'll spray oil all over the tire and suspension, it would be better if it pointed down.

The other is durability, with it hanging out like that, it'll be more likely to take a hit. ANd if it does take a hit, the increased lever arm of the pipe sticking out would amplify the force, and cause damage.

I do think it looks cool, but I'm not sure I'd actually want to run it.

oldginger
05-10-2003, 01:16 PM
Actually the project team members had a debate on the oily tire issue and could not come to a conclusion. That's why we decided to expose this project at this time and listen to what people say.

The rear suspension arm and shock (L or R depends on the vehicle) will eventually get oily after running a few tanks of fuel, no matter how you point the pipe out or down just like most gas-powered cars.

;) Well, when your car takes a hit you know it is going to look bad anyway, so let's drive just a little bit conservative with any "show" cars.

it looks soooo coool, but i would be affraid, that it will rob the engine of some HP not much, but if it wont, it will be best pipe, ive ever saw!!So true, scale lookin'

05-10-2003, 06:31 PM
wow i really really! wanna put one on my supermaxx!

i think that the other pipe for symetry is a great idea but i think you should take it one step further and rout mabey some 1/4 inch tubing to the other side so exhaust comes out both sides. mabey??? or will i have to do that my self. either way its awsome to see some new designs or old ones, depends on how you look at it. lol

I made a simular type of side pipe for my Ofna MBX-to-GTP conversion because the exhaust exitted under the GTP body otherwise.I agree with ADA$ that it will probably choke performance. For that reason,I made mine slip on over the stock outlet, and carried that size all the way to the end(in other words, where yours is 3/8",mine is 1/2").Yours looks a little more authentic.I'd post a pic,but that feature is disabled.

Maybe an "In-Line" style can be considered, i.e., with mounting springs instead of a silicone coupler. This would facilitate for easier cleaning and maintainance. :)

oldginger: I do not own a Savage. But I can say with authority that if that pipe were only made available for the Savage, I would buy a Savage just to be able to run that exhaust.

I think it is about time a scale looking exhaust was produced and this example is simply stunning!

Now, being that it probably can be mounted on other vehicles, I see a model of a 427 Cobra or a 427 Sting Ray with those exhaust systems being contemplated.

I like all the colors, actually. But for my future 427 cobra the gray anodize would be the ticket. The polished silver and the polished purple anodize would be great and has unlimited show truck appeal.

Addressing the tire oiling issue, I agree that yes it is eventually going to get everywhere anyway. It's a good reason to do a thorough cleaning and inspection so I don't care enough about the oiling issue to prevent me from buying the pipe. Leave the exit parallel with the ground.

Finally, here are some thoughts I have about the potential of this pipe, regarding the 'stinger' portion: possibly the stinger, or glasspack sidepipe if you will, could be made also; independent of the main tuned pipe as an "accessory". That way it could be added to an existing vehicle for the custom applications. Such as vertical mounting for a 'big rig' truck look. Or as rear mounted 'turn downs' for muscle cars. I can think of more too. ;)

I hope the system will be produced.

oldginger
05-13-2003, 02:49 PM
WHO?
This project was initiated by TSAIS, a R/C product R&D company located here in the US. These mufflers will be manufactured overseas and distributed worldwide by RCHub.com.

WHERE AND HOW MUCH?
You should be able to get one at your local hobby shop when it's available, and the retail price range is between $44.95 and $49.95.

WHEN?
We planned to receive our first shipment in June.

perhaps if you routed it the right way so the exhaust wouldn't exit so close to the body and chassis. Making a "universal" second pipe would be really cool, so you wouldn't just have to have a savage or savage pipe. Is there any performance cuts here? like too much backpressure created by the extended pipe?

InspGadgt
05-13-2003, 06:56 PM
Gotta say that first one looks cool...definately needs the turn at the end to point the exhaust more away from the rear tire though.

On another note...I've always hoped someone would make a side pipe with a rear exit for other cars so that we could use flexible tubing like an exhaust deflector to have the exhaust exit the rear of the car and still maintain the benifits of a tuned pipe. I for one am tired of the oil muck on the sid of my car or on the rear tire when the exhust deflector gets torn off in racing.

A lot will want to kick the crap out of me for stating this. This pipe is the best looking racing pipe that I have seen. It is awsome that it is out for the Savage.

I however drive a T-Maxx 2.5. I have no more money to buy a Savage to put that pipe on. I don't buy fancy parts that weight your truck down, or buy the most expensive part out there just to say"Yeh I have that." This is a great pipe and I just hope it comes out for the T-Maxx. Yeah the T-Maxx has a lot of aftermarket hop-ups that don't do sqwat for your truck. I bet the Savage will too some day. Its a new truck so give it time.

But please, whoever makes this pipe, also make avalable for
the T-Maxx 2.5

Hey If any T-Maxxers are reading this, try the Full Force spider chassis for racing. It is super tough, and comes will allen/ Hex Screws. It is a great investment. Full Force sells is for $85, but that is too much. I purchaced one at www.Thercproshop.com for $65. It is very strong and super light. 5 oz lighter.

how do you allow for all the different width bodies on the market?..................

StevePond
05-15-2003, 08:09 AM
I would imagine you could just swing the whole pipe outward and make a longer pipe mount to secure the front of the pipe if you have a body that is wider.

fastharry
05-15-2003, 08:21 AM
that might work, except the manifold stays in one place, and your changing the angle of the pipe..which means it won't run straight down the side of the body,right?..

oldginger

We thought about the body width issue too and we think it wouldn't hurt the look too much if you jsut trim the body a little bit to "show off" what you have.

I can see myself buying 2 of these. Hacking off the tuned pipe portion and then running flex pipe from the header to each of the "mufflers" on the outside of the body. Would make for a very realistic scale look on certain sports and muscle cars.

That is unless they go ahead and make the "muffler" portion available seperately as an accessory. (hint-hint) ;)

aw dammit! you guys took my idea! :D:D:D but i think it looks very good (much better than what i would have done). i dont really like the purple or the straight back idea... purple to me dosent look that real (other ppl like it though), and that straight back one looks weird on a truck (kinda like a jet). do you guys notice any decress in performance when you run these mufflers? how about if you get rid of the tunned pipe inside and just run the external one (that might screw up the whole tunned pipe idea)?
my two cents

I like em! I would like the black one shipped to my home please!:D

It looks killer! Put my name on the list for when they are available.

As of right now I have a homemade deflector pointing the exhaust away from the truck. With the origanal exhaust shooting straight down it covers the rear wheel assembly within the first few minutes of driving. So I'm ready for about anything to replace the oem pipe.

A dual set-up would be great. Say the second pipe(straight pipe) would be cool if it could be ran to the rear. Then maybe a 2nd muffler tip could be placed on the other side of the truck to give it a true straight out the back dual setup.

I like the dual sound but do not want to sacrifice the performance of my vehicle. So who ever could make a dual exhaust kit that would help or be even with a tuned pipe would be the MAN!:D

-=ADA$=-

CRSMP5
05-18-2003, 07:57 AM
i want one of each pipes.. just to compair.. i think the fact that you are buiding a tuned pipe into the stinger, will make it a non issue or performance loss, and the straight pipe will add looks to somethign a side pipe will not... i also think th ething will sound really good if not quieter than most tuned pipes due to the long pipe and extra built in tuned pipe..

oil.. HA, only if i had to worry about oil on my truck, vs all the dirt, mud that it gets exposed to...

as for color.. polished or black or even the dark grey, trying to come up with a paint scheme for purpal and other colors is difficult, and it want it to look at home on any body i paint... and i assume you ask this due to mfg costs that would be incorperated with makign a large selection of colors

Looks sweet..

I work at a hobby shop where we sell the living daylights out of Monster Trucks. All I can say is "If you build it, and it shines, they will buy". For an aftermarket SAVAGE pipe, we have turned to THS Racing for their polished aluminum pipe. Great performance, and sound, but at 90 bucks retail, we sure sell a lot for being an overpriced pipe.

The first pipe pictured is definitely the best looking so far, and in a hard anodized natural finished, or polished look, they would sell best. Black does not flaunt it enough, Blue and Purple have been done, and not too many people are fond of the purple look.

And for you crybabies: This is a Monster Truck, oil should be the LEAST of your messy problems :p

old phart,

You asked for it, you got it. When we recorded the video clip, we installed the pipe (upside down) onto a 1/8 off-road buggy, fired up the engine, let it sit on a work stand and then started video taping. We also tuned the engine a little bit rich on the high end, so you will see some smoke coming out from the exhaust. Please visit http://www.rchub.com and click the link that says "THE CUSTOM SIDE PIPE VIDEO" below the side pipe picture. It is a .zip file, so download the file onto your hard drive and then open it.

Thank you very much for "pushing" us forward, everybody including us needs a kick on the butt sometimes. ;)

That seems to be where most of RC is going now. At the LHS I work at, the store sells probably 10-20 monster trucks (I guess I should say Savages and T-Maxxes) for every 1 touring car. For the $55 that those pipes cost, I think RC Hub might have trouble keeping them in stock, especially with the Savage SS coming and everyone doing their Christmas buys.

Great looking product guys. Its about time that someone makes a scale looking pipe that is more than just looks.

Speaking of the Savage SS...wonder how this pipe will work with the .25 or if it will need a chamber redesign...

Also...still think it would be cool to have a dummy pipe for the other side...even if it's molded out of plastic and chrome plated to match the other side.

I was just shown this thread...my only concern would be if the pipe takes a side impact, what kind of damage would be done to the "stinger"?

Every pipe I've ran (for the most part) has ended up dinged, some of them end up with the stingers pushed in on the pipe body.

With a pipe as pretty as that one (It does look damn good) I'd hate to get whacked in the side and damage it...

It might be a good idea to get 2 of them, one for bashing and one for display. :p

FYI: RCHub.com expects to receive some pipes sometime next week.

The polished Savage custom side pipe is finally in stock and it looks great! The pipe comes with a coupler, two zip ties, a piece of wire and a post to hold the pipe, set screws and allan wrenches.

We also learned that the factory has a problem anodizing the custom side pipe, so there won't be any anodized side pipes avaialble until they figure out how to do it right. (I like the polished one better personally)

OOOOOOO my god.. it is unreal.. quiet is a understatement.. ill post link to vids tonight compairing sound between 8 port and picco 26 vs a duratraxx pipe ive been using.. those with a picco want this pipe.. makes it MUCH more quiet.. not as quiet as say a 8 port.. but enough to not disturb the neighbors..

performance so far.. great top end, no notice to loss in bottom end..

thanks.. ive had like 15 people dying to hear my feelings on it on savage-central since i told them i had preordered it, so i had to spend the time the day it arrived so i could pass info onto them.. pluse i had to try it.. just matter of setting up vid camera while i played.. my LHS is also supposed to call and order some, and im sure the track i run at will be calling after they see mine sat... so my pics and vids were made for those who cannot see it in person yet to satisfy them..

now after all the bugs get worked out on anodizing and all.. i still want one of these..

but made up to fit a 1/8 buggy... i like the power the tsais has.. and think that one would suit a buggy more.. else you could always sell me the demo one in the pic :D

I really like the sound of it on your Savage with both engines. To my hearing, on my computer, it sounds like the octave range is raised, making it a more pleasant tone. I did not perceive it being quiet so much as a tonal change. But definitely more pleasant and I can see how it would be less offensive to unappreciative neighbors.

Really stupid question. I was wondering if you could put that on a Ofna Ultra LX Pro. Think it would be really kool if there was on that could go on buggys.

i have not yet done the body cut it requires, but the only negative aspect is the pressure fitting will be on the bottom of the pipe and its possible to fill it up with oil.. besides that yea its a perfict fit.. and im still very very impressed with the power the pipe seems to make..

Is there anyway that you could fill the hole and drill a new one on the top for the fitting?

:) something i kinda requested a few pages back... all that had to be doe in reality was fitting supplied and you drill your own hole like a cvec pipe to fit any 21 up size engine.. i would use a rubber cap, drill a hole tap it, use a normal thread fitting so you can insert a set screw if you put it on anything else... what ill probally do for the one i buy for my buggy..

rcfreak2003
08-07-2003, 10:20 PM
Here's a idea. What if they had a hole both on the top and the bottom and they supply a screw to plug the hole not in use and a fitting. That would be great.

The progress of the T-Maxx pipe is slow, very slow. I have to say that it is totally NOT ACCEPTABLE by us as a buyer. Maybe in the future, we will have to setup our own factory. Sorry about the delay and thank you guys for your patience.

CRSMP5

well i did it.. i found a used one for nothing for my buggy... now due to the design of the pressure fitting, it would not lay right on my buggy, the fitting hit my rock gaurd and made it sit very awkward, well i decided i wanted to keep the ability of pressure fitting on that side so here is what i did..

http://members.aol.com/crsmp5/rc/tsais/1.jpg
http://members.aol.com/crsmp5/rc/tsais/2.jpg
http://members.aol.com/crsmp5/rc/tsais/3.jpg
http://members.aol.com/crsmp5/rc/tsais/4.jpg

i moved the fitting to the top of the pipe by drilling and tapping a new hole in it, then the welded boss i cut right under the old hole with my dremal and cut off wheel, then sanded it down to size with a drumb sander. i then drilled and tapped it for a set screw, some loctite and walla.. fits the buggy with less than 30 min of work, i can remove the said set screw and put the fitting back in that side to use on a savage or anything else the pipe exits the other side of the truck.. but since this is my 2nd one.. when i can afford the new era twin engine stuff.. will be premade to fit it!! and the fitting is moved so i do not have to worry about oil plugging the pressure line... i know a few of the people posted here wanted to see one fit a buggy, and thought it would look nice on one, well there ya go..

Id say that this is a great product. Its definately the hottest exaust ive seen. But I think they should definately start including at least a dummy pipe for the other side. Or maybe figure out a way to put on a real exaust on the other side or would dual exausts hinder performance???.

RCRACER2471
10-24-2003, 07:17 PM
What does this pipe offer performance wise. Does it give better top end speed or acceleration or is it more for custom looks than anything else???

CRSMP5
10-24-2003, 08:31 PM
what ive found is a slight loss on bottom but alot of gain on top.. on the other savage forum i did the review for i am reading alot of the same replies as for gains.. its like they state they just got a new pipe and tell about it not relizing my review even exists which is great.. :D cause it is like stating their feelings with out reading mine..

RCRACER2471
10-24-2003, 08:49 PM
So your saying with this pipe it will make the Savage go faster than it is stock?

CRSMP5
10-25-2003, 01:39 AM
im sure it depends alot on the engine also.. but on my 8 port and picco26 it improved top end.. my RB WS7II crank is out in the mail getting a pull start conversion.. i plan to test all my pipes on it and compair how it works on it also.. BUT from all ive seen.. and reading others opinions of it.. there seems to be a census that it helps on the high side..

on a side note... the guy with the newera twin engine savage with piccos in it just ordered 2 pipes for it.. so soon we will be able to see a pipe on both sides of a savage blowing smoke.. :D

There's no question the pipe looks great. Different colors, better yet. The second thing I thought of after looking at it for a minute is the oil spraying on the tire. I own a Savage25 and as it is, oil sprays all over the side, a little on the brake disk, and the right rear suspension gets nailed. Pushing the oil blast out on to the tire and away from everything else? I guess if you run it in the dirt, it probably wont make a difference as far as traction goes. To tell you the truth I thought about connecting a piece of clear hose to the end of the pipe and running it back to the end of the truck just to keep the oil from getting all over everything. I think I like your idea better.
