I was wondering if the optional heatsink for the lightstick motor (pt# ptrad-1012)
was worth using? Does any one have any experience with it?

After all my experiences with these motors, I would not hesitate to recommend the heat sink if it is easily available and low in cost.In addition, the BEST THING YOU CAN DO is to remove the 2 screws that hold the motor in to allow air to pass thru, as there are no exposed cooling holes as assembled.You can go further by drilling a small hole in the front gearbox motor housing to capture the cooling hole in front of the motor, giving you a total of 3 cooling holes. This more than anything, is of paramount importance to avoid overheating.A tiny drop of CA or some tape will secure the motor, though I personally have not needed either as the motor is a good friction fit. Additional cooling can be had by soldering short bits of copper wire to the tabs that go into the brushes. This will help pull heat away from the brushes. Make a small coil with the copper wire and get it in the airflow from the prop.

An old slot car trick!! And it works.

Hello again. That heat sink is a great idea and is homemade, which means no ordering! The twin coils might even scoop some random electrons from the air! http://www.rcmicroflight.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I'm guessing that the store bought one might be some finned thing that clips over the motor can? Hector375, can you name a retailer who would stock these ptrad-1012 heatsinks? But here in NE, winter air sure keeps them cool! Best Regards

THANKS FOR ALL THE SUGGESTIONS, I PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE FOUND THE FRONT COOLING HOLE UNTIL AFTER THE POST MORTUM OTHERWISE.
I LOOKED ON GWS'S WEBPAGE BUT THE ACCESSORY SECTION ISN'T UP AND RUNNING YET, I IMAGINE THAT IS WHERE THEY'LL LIST THE HEATSINK. I'M STILL LOOKING FOR AN ON-LINE SOURCE BUT I THINK I'LL NEED MY LOCAL HOBBY SHOP OWNER TO TRACK IT DOWN. I KNOW IT EXISTS IT'S SHOWN ON PAGE 2 OF THE LITESTIK INSTRUCTIONS AND IT IS A FINNED CLIP ON PART. I'M GOING TO KEEP SEARCHING THE WEB FOR IT AND IF I FIND IT I'LL LET YOU ALL IN ON WHERE.

Well I finaly got my heatsink and it's quite effective at drawing the heat away from the motor. GWS has changed the part number to "GWSAPO15" it cost me $2.69 CAN. and had to be ordered through the local hobby shop,who got it from Horizon Hobby. I hope this helps anyone else out there looking to keep there stick motors running cooler,longer.

After an extensive search on the web for this heat sink, I have come up empty.
Is there a picture somewhere on the web?
From the discription I am hearing here, I am wondering if there is a flux ring effect?

Can't find a pic at horizon hobby but I was told that aluminum does not provide the flux ring effect (non-ferrous)

Hi guys
I,v put a picture of my motor with the heatsink attached on the photo page of this bulletin board. I cant find any info or pictures of this thing on the web either.

What exactly is stator ring effect? Does it aid or hinder motor operation?I didnt notice any differance in performance with or without the heatsink, but the temperatures were definatly much lower.
