Does it help out with anything? And what about the zip ties on top of the head? Im just looking for a few pointers. And also can figure out howto get my settings right like when i hit the brake it tries to die. I searched on here but not much luck.

Just chassis clutter, and the possibility if it catching in the gears or something. The zipties on the head are to protect the head in rollovers. Not necessary, but it keeps your head looking good. For the dieing when you hit the brakes, adjust the idle screw (the non-needle screw on the carb) so that there is about a 1mm gap in the carb when at idle.

Ill try it. Thanks

well i adjusted the idle screw and i dont even see anything move. I tried everything and its getting agravating. So i geuss ill put it in the shop.

You shouldnt see much move. It sounds like you only need a little more, a barely noticeable amount. Do you have the airfilter on? You will need to take it off to see it move.

well i brought it to the shop today and they said my motor had low compression. So bout to put in the new piston and cylinder.

Ah, yeah that would do it. Worn pistons and sleeves can make your engine hate you.

Well it all went well for the motor except on the 5th tank the pull start recoil went out. The new motor has great compression. When i first put it together i took it apart about 3 time cause i couldnt get the pull rope to pull but when i yanked it i relized thats just a heck of alot of compression. lol But time for a new pull rope now it couldnt take it.

Well now the motor was broke in and im now on my 12th tank or so. I can run my car around 3 min. or so and it will die and not restart and then after that the only time it will pop off is when i put full in the carb. I replaced all the lines but now how do i tell the tank is bad? Ive searched on here but no luck. Please help!! Im bout to give this up and just stick to street cars. lol And then after it sits over night it will pop off on the first pull. These cars cant be that hard to work on.

well i took it to the shop and i let them tear it down and i was told that sand had gotten into my engine and wore down the cylinder. They said they dont understand how since everything looked well including the air filter. Oh well time to just get a new engine.

the 3 min run time sounds like ur waay too lean on the LSN that happened to me, it would shut off from overheating one time reaching 425 degs F  if u dont have a way to check ur engine temp id suggest getting a temp gun or an onboard guage at ur LHS. but thats just my opinion...

well i trashed the .18 for now and put my spare .15 xtm on it and it runs like a top. The only thing is that i just dont have the power i had anymore. Now time to do some shopping for more power. Any ideas on a good motor?

Here's the last motor you should have to buy for your Evader:
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGGP7&P=7
It's got globs of power and holds a tune extremely well. Just make sure you run it a tiny bit rich to make it love long. It's an awesome motor!

I picked it up and my truck survived around 3 tanks of fuel after break in and broke the gear in the tranny. lol It rolls pretty good. What should my final lsn setting should be after break in? And any other gearing that i can do for top speed. I asked my hobby shop and he said the best is to leave the gearing stock.
vaderbxman
09-18-2007, 08:54 PM
I'm with your LHS dude with leaving it stock, but you can cheat a little and pick up the Nitro Evader BX spur gear. It'll make your Evader pick up about 3 MPH.
As for needle settings: I honestly can't remember. My dad hasn't run his since March when he picked up his Turmoil.
smurfcivic

sorry i meant the hsn but thatnks for the help. I probably wont do that gear for just 3 mph. lol

10-30-2007, 05:32 PM
well you can also use the clutch bell from the evader bx, along with the bx spur you might gain a few more miles per gallon...lol
by the way, have any of you guys ever had a clutch needed replaced on your evader, mine (the cursed evader) is on about its 3rd now... the plastic wears down to the spring, spring hits bell, spring breaks, truck goes nuts, brake rotor strips while trying to stop, engine stalls and is a pain in the *ss to refire after 10-15 min pit stop....ugh bad day.....lol
smurfcivic
10-30-2007, 06:14 PM
never have had a problem with the cltch. Just the plastic gear in the tranny that after the second i finally put a metal 1. lol

My dad's never had a problem with excessive wear, but it did glaze over after just a few tanks and we had to de-glaze it by hitting it with some sandpaper.

glaze over? you mean on the bell? ok that would make sense...anyway i might get better clutch shoes or make my own out of alum. cant be that hard...:)

I mean the clutch shoes themselves would become shiny, and woudn't grab onto the clutchbell.

Greetings,
Have 3 boys and a great many RC products. Today, the boys decided to pull out their 3 Nitro Evaders and play with them. Brought out the starter box, fresh jug on fuel and proceeded to try and fire them up. First one started easily but when placed onto the ground, it ran backwards, which I have never experienced. Stopped the motor, restarted and same still...maybe I am too tired and brain dead but what am I missing here?
Next, the next boys car failed to fire off at all and replaced the glow plug. Messed with the settings on the carb and it tries to light, but fails to fully ignite. Can someone give me some baselines on the high/low settings. Idle setting is fine. Last beloved child decides he wants to put the after market blue head onto his motor and pops of the original head and twists the piston sleeve. Anyone know where the notch on the sleeve lines up to?
Air Filters are clean, and whether they are on or off, starting is not happening, so it is not a filter oil restriction of air flow. Fuel is good, flow is good, plug is good. All batteries fresh. Either settings or crap in the carb is my guess. Each truck has an after market tuned pipe, head. Last time we ran these trucks was a year ago.
Also, anyone has a link to where I can see a total rebuild on this motor or similar?
Lastly, while trying to fire the motors up, I am getting a lot of aerosolized fuel out the carb intake, I do not recall this ever happening, but it has been a while.
Thank You,
Bob-

um well that happends i guess, just wondering what fuel are you running? mine wouldnt run worth crap on 10% nitro, so i use 15% and it starts harder than the 10% but runs better...
when the truck ran backwards, would the wheels come to a complete stop in mid air? (with the brakes if necessary) if the wheels wouldnt stop then your engine is running backwards. do you still have a recoil pull start on that engine, if not the engine could run backwards
and the carb settings are HSN: 1.5 turns out from fully closed (all the way in), LSN: i think its a half turn in from flush with the little brass housing/nut thingey...
please do yourself a favor and never try to run an engine with out an air filter... thats just a precaution you should take because even the tiniest piece of dust that you cant even see could hurt your motor...
running backwards, ive heard of other people having that same prob i guess that it would work and i dont think that it should hurt anything... check to make sure your starter box is running the proper way, DC motors will run either direction depending on which way the batt is hooked up

This early afternoon, and not so tired, sat down and went back over everything. Starter box (Ofna) had reversed its polarity, which I have found hard to believe. We have used this box for a great long time and when I check it, yes it was running in reverse so I switched the banana plugs and that cured that. Tore each motor down and rebuilt them, reset the carbs and they fired up.
The reason for firing the motor off w/o the air cleaner was to ensure we where not dealing a restriction through the air cleaner which can cause a hard start. My cars where being started in the garage on our service bench, so there is no problems with dust or debris plus we keep our cars immaculate.
The piston sleeve has an indentation and the cylinder has a raised dimple which I could not see with out my glasses...easy enough to align. I was however impressed with the condition of the bore and piston...absolutely perfect. We run 15% nitro, inline filter, fuel is filtered and the air cleaner is oiled with light weight mineral oil, something I was taught many years ago when we raced 1/4 midgets.
We ditched the recoil starters long ago, too many breaks.
It is amazing how much you forget on these small motors and the minor details that cause failure.
Thank You.

sure no problem.
>hey i couldnt help noticing that the new electric evader ext has a gear diff in it, any chances on it fitting into the nitro tranny? i have had several problems with my ball diff and i want a maintence free tranny... tower has the entire assembly (assembled) for about $10... ?worth trying?

hey um there is a lot of baked on crud around my glow plug, i know i need to cleam it but im afraid of getting stuff in the cylinder, can i take the head off and reuse the original head gasket? i have built full size car engines and the head gasket is a one time deal.
the book doesnt say anything about the head gasket....
evst 360
12-21-2007, 03:46 PM
the "head gasket" you're referring to is just a copper ring used to adjust the compression, commonly called a head shim. There isnt a formal head gasket on these little engines, the contact between the head or head button and the block is enough. It can be reused no problem.

ugh... damn potholes... how odd is it to be running speed trials down the road (WOT) hit the brakes (car comming and i had to get off the road) slide sideways for about 10 feet hit a pot hole and in a spectacular backflip/mid-air barrel roll (complements of the nieghbor) land without scratching a damn piece of plastic (no body on) i loose the throttle return spring on impact.... now my excuse for crashing is that the spring broke while i was at WOT, but thats not exactly the case, however it did cause some minor complications on the next few passes...

ok this post is just because im curious enough to ask...
how high have any of you ever jumped your evaders?
ive had mine launch off a sheet of plywood leaned up against the picnic table...
the only thing i had to measure the height of the jump was the foundation wall of my house (right next to the ramp)
well i went about a foot over a full story
not bad for only about 10-15 feet of concrete to take off from
P.S. yes i did land in one piece ready to go at it again!
P.S.P.S. o yea, and i landed in grass...

i could pick an evader off of a buddy for $20.
i looked at the car and got it to run but it gets warm and cuts off and thats tail tell signs of a motor that has no compression.
so i went and talked to the lhs guy and he told me that he wouldnt rebuild it if it was him.
he said the O.S. sumthin.......is wat i should get.
it would cost about $120 total.
With that said im want some opinions.
would you buy the car for $20 and buy the new motor or jus let it go?
wvrednek
07-19-2008, 04:15 PM
well from what ive heard, that O.S. engine is a very good engine...
did you try to tune the engine that was on it? (this is a dumb question but mine will do that until it gets tuned properly)
if your LHS wolnt rebuild the engine, then you can get practically any part from towerhobbies.com and rebuild it yourself...

I just got my Nitro Evader ST up and running again after sitting for 3 months. I can get it to start pretty easily but when it does it runs at full throttle. I looked at the carb hole, or whatever you'd call it, under the air filter and it doesn't close or open. when i go to turn the low end screw it closes but when i pull the trigger it either doesn't do anything or it opens and stays open.
On a side note, i don't know if anyone had the problem i had initially with the tranny gears stripping every time it was ran. But mine kept chewing all the teeth off of the gear after every run. After having my LHS repair it about 5 times someone finally started making metal gears for these things. So now i have a full metal gear box and it's sweet. That was the only weakness i found with my Evader. It's going on 3yrs old now.

i just bought the nitro evader st. does any1 have any tips 4 the break-in process? and what upgrades/mods should i do? i will be doing major bashing at the dirtbike park next to my house. there are jumps from 2feet to 8feet.

did anyone put a bumper on their evader? what bumper did you use?
wvrednek
08-30-2008, 08:08 PM
this is what i have put into my evader...
the aluninum brake nut. the plastic one hardly lasted through break-in
a full metal tranny. tranmissions and plastic don't mix. at least not out here in west virginia they dont
a fuel filter. this is important for any nitro vehicle
get a few extra fiberglass brake discs
a front bumper. while learning to drive, i had a few crashes. i think the colored ones are actually cheaper than the original black ones, so mine has a yellow one
the standard steering servo lasted me about 2 gallons of fuel then i was replacing the crappy plastic gears in it. like i said above, plastic doesnt work in west virginia. i have yet to buy a good steel geared servo but i will soon
i had trouble keeping the e-clips on the pivot shaft of the front a-arms. so i machined ones that takes tiny cotter pins
i have rechargeable batts in everything
of course tires and wheels but i will say the stock tires were pretty good for everything except high grass...
o and if you havent already, dont buy the o'donnell 10% fuel, i only use byron 15%. since then i have not had as many starting and tuning problems
most importantly: have fun.

02-16-2009, 08:24 AM
I don't think so. I have put one on mine and I don't think that it makes much difference. I have blown the exhaust manifold gasget before. I think that it is from overheating and the man bolts comming loose...

Well a month or two ago, the stock duratrax transmitter stopped transmitting. An unsolveable problem...
So I welnt down to my LHS and after some researching I finally bought a spektrum dx3r. I know that it is 3 channel but he gave me a really good deal. I'm very excited and I can't wait until it comes in in a week...

So my dtx engine went sour. I am looking at buying a new one. I see several new .18 hpi engines on eBay for about $80. Are they any good? Or should I get an O.S. .18. Which costs about $135. If so which os .18 engine is the best for my evader?
wvrednek
05-25-2009, 02:28 PM
Well I bought a slightly used VX-18 off of a friend. Man this engine is awesome!!! It has sooooo much more power and torque than that crappy dtx engine. Plus it starts and runs much much more reliably than the stock one!
Combned with a spektrum and a very good metal geared steering servo, I probably have one of the hottest evaders around!! I'm not bragging ( because it still is an evader.....) but I have to say that this car is FUN to play with and to race!!!!!!!!! And wheelies are always fun too!!!
