It's vintage - mid 80's F1 car - and probably quite rare, so a complete car for $50 would be a good price - spares will be tough to find if it's not complete though.

I got it for 25 bucks hehe. It even comes with the original motor I think. Does need some help but what old tamiya doesn't??? I will keep you posted on my progress. I am part of the tamiyaclub and they have spares for rc cars.

hello all I decided to collect two of every current tamiya offroad kit
(one to build and display and one to leave shrinked in the box) seems like a good investment looking at some of the earily 80s kits which tamiya offroad do you think they will discontinue next? because that will be my first purchase then a couple blitzer beatles. I think that the super hornet will be next on the choping block though tower always seems to be sold out on them
let me know which kit everybody thinks will be next to go

I like the old Tamiya stuff too. Been collecting for a while and have some of the old off-road stuff still unassembled in the box. My favorites are the old metal SRB's (Rough Rider, Sand Scorcher, Super Champ) and three-speeds (Hilux, Blazing Blazer, Bruiser, Mountaineer). Check out my online shrine at www.rcgrabbag.com (http://www.rcgrabbag.com)

Nice photos.

Does anyone know of a site that lists the chronological releases of Tamiya products with photographs and information for each model?

My brother had a Hornet in the late 80s and I have recently become interested in learning more about the vintage models.

Thanks.

Many thanks TORQUER - excellent site.

Looking at that site brings back memories of my youth - while my brother had a Hornet I really wanted a Bigwig, but it never happened!

I would love to start collecting some older models but for the time being I am going to be kept busy with my Baha King and Wild Dagger. Maybe by the end of the year I will have acquired a Juggernaut 2 too.

I'm looking at rebuilding my Tamiya Striker... it was used pretty hard (and canabalized at times) so needs a variety of parts. I'm wondering if anyone has a Striker they'd be willing to sell for parts? Thanks.

Nice fox. Looks like you have a few vintage mods on that thing. I have my showroom at Tamiyaclub as my homepage. Check it out. I don't really have a ton of vintage stuff but it's cool to see what other people have. (Looks like tamiyaclub is undergoing some renovation right now)

RichieRich, thanks! Yeah I can't wait till Tamiya Club is back up and running. I was hoping to see some members posting some pics here! I just can't seem to look at the 'ol Tamiyas enough...

Yeah, the Fox has the Hop-up front swaybar and the Thorp driveshafts. I'm running a Rooster as well. Unfortunatly, I had to remove the driver to have room for the ESC. I sure wish that there was room for the driver also 'cause I think they are too cool! I just finished replacing the gearset. The counter gear on the small end had some missing teeth...err! She's up and running now and I'm quite pleased.

Please post some pics of your rigs if you get a chance...

shoot...i know I had seen this area before but i always forgot to install my list:
*Superchamp, my first R/C car
*Blackfoot, I was in between this and Supershot....I knew I should've bought supershot :(
*Porsche 959, Love it...too bad it's too fragile to do anything with thus back in the days, parts for it were hard to come by
*Boomerang, first car I race with. hated the front bumper. The slightest touch of something hard breaks it. I am thinking of getting some for nostalgic roundevous.
*Striker/Sonic Fighter/FX10 project. I'm still missing some critical parts. It's been put on temporarily hold.
*TA03F and TA03R-TRF. R is missing some front shock tower and after that both is going to be out for sale. They're great cars but just don't fit my driving style.
*TA04S...still recent but once TA05 comes out it will be a vintage. My little brother's car that had been converted to an almost TA04R sans the actual R upper deck.
*Original TB Evolution. Didn't like the upper adjustable arms. It might be on selling blocks soon. Immaculate condition.
*TB Evolution 2. Hated those crappy soft phillips head screws. lost some of the front sway bar parts. As soon as I can rebuild that. It would be on the selling block as well. Would probably buy one of each as a collection piece only.

Here is my Vintage Frog collection. The yellow and blue one is exactly as I bought it off eBay, the pink and white one is my old childhood buggy fully restored. Both have new original tires and wheels, fully detailed drivers, original black fiberglass speed controllers and original Mabuchi RS540's. The pink and white one is just awaiting the arrival of a new sticker kit. Hope you like em!!

I have a vintage tamiya frog too. Mine still needs front wheels and a body kit. Very expensive. My frog was worn out as I ran that thing everyday. Plus, I didn't know about bearings at the time so the rotating parts wore out rather quickly. Most everything on my frog is new except for the main chassis and the screws/bolts, etc. I received a parts car that had some good parts on it and used those too. Not very many, mostly transmission bits. You can visit my showroom at Tamiyaclub to see some of my collection.

RichieRich

Finding original tires will be difficult and expensive. Your best bet is ebay. If you want just plain old tires for bashing, you'll still have a hard time especially if you want to keep the old rims. They use 1.5 inch diameter tires. Sometimes you can find old Duratrax tires that will fit. Check Towerhobbies and check the dark corners of your local hobby shop.

RichieRich

I just got one of those re-issues too. I finished painting it yesterday. Did you get it on ebay? It's a really innovative car. I wonder why Tamiya doesn't make more competition buggies. I'll post a pic later.

fabolousRC
03-30-2004, 10:13 PM
the reason why Tamiya not making high performance buggies anymore is because they do not see it as profitable. Their last attempt was almost disastrous (Top Force/TA01) if it wasn't for the berth of touring car racing.

They are toying with the new Gravel Hound which I asure you will become a hit because Tamiya includes a reverse disable ESC this time which will eat out XXX4s on stock level with flock of new drivers whom had fond of Tamiya for a long time. Thus, it is based of a very popular new chassis (TT01) which by now has a good amount of hop up parts available.

I don't think they're going back to 2wd any time soon. They need to build a chassis and a solid drivetrain that can be mass produce and still be profitable at the same time. Do you I think they're due for one? Absolutely! Tamiya has tried too hard with Dyna Storm project because they wanted something original on the drivetrain (ie slipperclutch) design so it's easily acknowledge as Tamiya and not a Me-Too product like everyone else's.

You know what transmission design that worked the best? The Rough Rider series ones. All they need is just a ball diff and a simple slipper clutch system that works. They had done their homework on the chassis part especially the newest molded carbon plastic chassis from TA04.

For now, grasshopper chassis evolution will do them just fine.

I do, however, smell that Tamiya might create a 2wd buggy based on the new Blackfoot chassis to replace their entry level 2wd buggy class.

To RichieRich

Yep an Ebay buy, couldn't pass up the reasonable price.

RichieRich
03-31-2004, 12:58 PM
mjohnston39 - Yeah, I got mine for the same reason. :)

fabolousRC - The Dyna Storm still could be a very competitive chassis. All it needs are smaller bulkheads to make room for longer suspension arms, shorter shocks up front and a lighter slipper clutch. The chassis is awesome otherwise. The only other thing I would upgrade are the spring washers in the diff. They should put a spring back there for durability.

I don't know if they will make a 2WD buggy out of the new Blackfoot chassis. It's very big. Unless they're making a 1/8 scale electric buggy?

mmmm no...It's pretty much going to be like Baja Champ and Baja King. It's not going to be an exact lay out chassis wise but I sense that they're at least keeping the drivetrain. The King blackfoot drivetrain is in its second iteration, the first installment was on Wild Willy 2 chassis. The current DF01 chassis is completely outdated and they need a cheap but profitable chassis/drivetrain combo that's gonna last them another...umm...20 years? Plus the way they design the gravel hound...I guess and I supposed they finally fired the guy who designed Baja series and defunct-before-even-produced Neo Shot and finally found a guy who CAN REALLY design a body, so I expect Tamiya to come out with some really cool body design not in too distant future.

I agree with you on Dyna storm case. Just the matter of fact is that the drivetrain is so outdated that they need to completely new design with available parts (there were a lot of cars that featured that gearbox at the time the original Dyna Storm was produced: Dyna Blaster, Madcap, King Cab, Hilux, Super Astute was still in production). Now, they need the same concept of products with less development time (saves overhead cost) yet can be profitable at the same time. It was that case with TB01. Tamiya never knew that it would be THAT popular and thus fathered TT01 and eventually TB EVO III/TB02 series.

I think Tamiya can use the belt drive system just like in the TLT-1 system and use the rear suspension arm from Gravel Hound. Design a new chassis that can be build as fiber reinforced plastic or molded graphite chassis to differentiate the cheaper to the high performance ones. Slap a couple of new body designs on it, whoala...you get new set of buggies.

The King blackfoot drivetrain is in its second iteration, the first installment was on Wild Willy 2 chassis.

IIRC the WW2 drivetrain was also used with the Wild Dagger/Twin Detanator and Blackfoot Extreme not the King Blackfoot. This transmission would probably be a poor choice for a 2wd buggy, it's was orginally designed for a monster truck.

Mike.

Mike.

Right. The Blackfoot Xtreme's transmission has something like a 22:1 ratio which is nuts for a buggy. I have a Blackfoot Xtreme and the chassis is huge compared to an RC10b4.

fabolousRC - I haven't seen the Gravel Hound. Do you know where there are pictures? Is it 4wd or 2wd?

The Gravel Hound is an entry level RTR 4WD buggy, those that have seen it claim that it is only marginally better than the Baja King TL-01Bs.

It's available in Canada already? Damn...I feel sorry for me in the US :)) I still would say that Gravel Hound has a chance. The fact that 90% of TT01's hop up parts can be fitted into GH and once the popularity picks up, I bet Tamiya is going to come up with some cool TRF options such as CF shock towers and new TRF off road dampers. Only time would tell....

Thank you for the correction. It was Blackfoot Extreme not King Blackfoot. I just do not think that the gear ratio would hurt much with 2.2 Dyna Storm wheels and tires but Tamiya had always come out with those wierd ratios anyway ie Bush Devil and Stadium Blitzer.

Oh, I did see that at tamiyaclub. For some reason I never really looked at it real well. Looks like it has Dynastorm wheels/tires. The body is nice. Looks like it would need some serious hop-ups like oil shocks and turnbuckles. And according to the post on tamiyaclub, it has plastic dogbones? This car looks like it could be a contender with the right upgrades.

All newer Tamiyas RTR comes with plastic shaft and bones. They did it to save production cost thus reducing the retail price. In return, they make the hop up price cheaper. Remember how expensive Tamiya hop up used to be?

I think what happened with the Neo Shot was that the decided not to launch it because they know they couldn't bring the price to where XXX4 and MX4BC which is under 300 bucks. Looking at Hiro's page, I would say the car could easily cost in excess of 600 bucks easy.

Just announced today in my Japanese paper. Tamiya and Nikko will merge in order to better penetrate the mega mall market.

In agreements already arranged with Wallmart they will begin distribution of kits produced through a joint venture in China in a new range of ready to run sets based on Nikko's line and their own XB series.

In order to focus on this market Tamiya will discontinue the sale of its assembly kits over the next two years, which includes the closing of most of its Japanese production facilities.

How awesome is this thread !!! :D :D :D

I love seeing all this vintage Tamiya stuff, it brings back so many childhood memories. I live in Australia so R/C cars are not so cheap, certainly not back in the 80's anyway. All I could afford as a kid was to buy the Tamiya R/C guide book each year. Mannn am I spewing I threw those out. :(

I remember the Hornet costing around $350.00 when I was at school. When I finally got an apprenticeship as a mechanic the first thing I bought was a Tamiya Manta Ray, :D I fully decked it out with ball bearings and a gold power motor, ESC's were out of my range so I burnt out the mechanical speed controller quite often.

I am 30 now & I have a good paying job that has me flying all around Asia so each time I go through Hong Kong I pick myself up another Tamiya car.

What I really want is the body parts set for the 1988-89 toyota celica GT Four. I actually have a real version of the same Celica I drive to work so if anyone stumbles accross one send me an email.

Thanks for all the memories

IIRC the planned price for the Neo Shot was very similar to the F201 cars, so about 170 USD street price????

Thanks for the photo cheechthechi, knew it was out there but was too lazy to go find it, was a second photo also posted?

It does look like it has Dyna storm wheels and tires, which are also on other Tamiya buggies, actually glad to see that, I can get tires for my DS for some time to come :D. Looking what others have writen on the TT01 thread, they seem happy with that cars performance, espically after a few select hop-ups have been added, lets hope that is the same with the Gravel Hound's case.

hey

I couldn't find a second picture of it (even though there's probably one out there) :D . I think it's great that tamiya is going to introduce the gravel hound. Maybe finally tamiya will have a good 4wd buggy to equal that of their formere bests ( Frog, Avante, Fox...etc.) Judging by the popularity of the current tt 01 I'm sure the gravel hound will be an excellant preformer.

Try to message or e-mail HKJai. He has a good selection of Tamiya bodies good and/or new.

It is missing the body and driver but how much is this buggy or car worth?
It is in EXCELLENT condition the tires arent even worn and it is very clean...

Alright, here's a picture of my Dyna Storm re-release. It's been painted like the box art which seems to be a very popular thing to do. I even used Tamiya lexan spray paints. :)

Guys...more classic to come. After the old M3 on new TT01 chassis, it's MB 190E EVO II's turn. The classis duo is back.

On top of that, a Miata on M04M chassis and a new buggy (no name yet). You can see it all here http://www.tamiya.com/english/show0405/show0405.htm

Isn't that buggy called a Gravel Hound? It's keeping up with the animal names like the frog, grasshopper, and other buggies like that. I'm getting a rolling chassis of a porsche 935. Tamiya's #2 kit hehe. Lucky me. Now all I need is the shell. Not so lucky me.

I still like it. But, I saw it up-close at RCX and it has the standard U-shaped hinge pin thingy that Tamiya likes to use. It creates a lot of slop in the suspension. Better shocks should make this buggy work rather well. The only other thing is that if those are dynastorm rims, the only tires that will work for that buggy are Tamiya's own. It's a bit limiting, dontcha think?

Not necessarily, rich. I think somebody in Tamiya found out how desperately everyone, who started their hobby with a Tamiya Off Road car, wanted a new car from Tamiya in any way shay perform including this one. I saw a few options for DF02 already at their website eventhough it's in Kanji but it looks like its going to be big. Unfortunately...the kit that I was expecting was a kit version of the RTR...I'm a bit disappointed but as soon as more options come in, I might change that perception....btw...Team Kyosho dumped their dual belt prototype for a shaftdriven one. I think personally, shaft driven is the future for Off Road 4WD buggies.

I don't remember who posted those pictures at RC10B4.com...could be you but it does hint that Yokomo might switch to SD based 4WD buggies as well...Losi had been seen testing shaft driven as well although there are plenty of improvements can be made to the XXX-4...so we'll see..The world championship is next year in Europe..I think...

Hey all, Im in the middle of rebuilding a subaru brat. Its like new i aquired
a NIB body off ebay which was great. I have gone with a THORP driveline
as i always remember the headaches caused by those stupid hex drive shafts
and i plan to run a hot motor so it needs a strong box. Iv always loved the subaru brat,i just love the look of it and the sunraiser wheels just set it off!

I do have a problem with the THORP addition to the truck and am hoping
someone may have a solution. The THORP drive shafts dont have a pin hole, they require alloy hubs that clamp down on the shafts..these hubs are made for wheels like the frog/blackfoot etc that have 5 lugs on the inside and locate in position. The brat wheels differ they have a star shaped bit of plastic and dont locate..has anyone had this prob??

I was thinking maybe another vehicle may have the same length dogbone shafts with a pin hole but have nfi about that.

Cheers
Jas

Rawdy:

You ~do~ know 'boxed' Hilux, Blazers, Bruisers & Mounty's go for over a grand on eBay, with the older ones being worth much more even if built but intact?

Is yours a Hi-Lux 4x4 or a later Bruiser? Or a hybrid of both kits? What shape is it in... I'm sorry I let my 'Lux go.

Hi there,Lil Buddha! Some coincidence! Are you here in Isb,or just your folks are??If you are, welcome! The rc scene here in Khi is pretty A-ok.More so with planes than with anything else, but i started helis and now we have regular fliers flying helis, since a while.Started a new trend with r/c trucks and now there are more and more every couple of weeks.I know for a fact that lots of people have r/c cars and trucks at home but we need to get organised so that they have a track to go to.Our clubs going to have one up and running soon.As a matter of fact in the upcoming Nationals that Karachi is going to be hosting, were gonna have a relay race where for the first time theres going to be cars too, competing with helis and planes.
The r/c scene in Lahore is pretty good too,in fact the best hobby shop,Hobby Lobby is located in Lahore. He deals with Thunder Tiger,Kyosho,Tamiya and World Models from China. (As a matter of fact just got off the phone with a guy from there wanting advice on his new EK-4).So if you or you Dad need help or info i can help you out.Let me know.Theres a pretty good outlet in Islamabad too by the way.
Incidentially just stopped work on the Bruiser short while back, putting her back together. She still looks good even though shes sittin in the company of the following trucks and buggies:TT Mirage V-Spec,Duratrax Nitro Demon,TT Ek_4,TT Mta -4,HPI Savage 4.6,and the Kyosho Mad Force and Inferno 7.5 Sports. :D ( I wont mention the helis!) ;)

Hi - My ten year old son begged me to buy a Sand Scorcher - the seller said that it worked, but we don't know how to put batteries in the controller.

It is a Futaba FP-T 2F controller (brown box with a wheel). Can anyone tell us how to put a battery into the controller so we can try and see if the Sand Scorcher really works?

Thanks so much - he also got a Pajero, and I know we'll have more questions.

You said a ~brown~ box, light brown almost a khaki? Oh lordy, thats ancient. The channels it ran on aren't even legal any more. I think a bit of pressure to push the back panel down should dis-engage the upper edge of the back panel and let it come off (but I'm guessing)

Why not ask they person who sold it to you?

natesmom
01-02-2006, 09:47 AM
You were right - that worked. The person who sold the car to me - as working - then told me that this car should really just sit on a shelf as it was to valuable to play with - so I have my doubts that it actually works, but now at least we can try out the controller.

Thanks so much for your help - I'll be back with more questions before this is all over.

I have just purchased some spares for my Sand Scorcher. N0. 155 which is supposed to be a servo saver. However it looks like it may not be suitable. Has anyone tried to set up one of these for a Scorcher? Sold to me as suitable but looks like it is only for the: 50155 SERVO SAVER SET
compatible with:
58025: VW Golf Racing Group 2 , 58026: Renault 5Turbo , 58034: Super Champ.

Any suggestions? (apart from do serious harm to the person who sold me the wrong part on ebay that is)

Hopefully someone will reply to this post, but, my question is in regards to the King Cab/Hilux. I recently purchased a runner/roller off of eBay, and have started tearing it down/reassembling it. The majority of the components are there, but it's missing the hex/spline adapter for the rear hub/axle. I know this setup was used on the Astute/Madcap/Dyna Storm, but is there a way to adapt this to use the typical pin type joint? I purchased a King Blackfoot/Blackfoot Extreme rear axle in hopes that it would work, but it is just a hair to short for the King Cab hub carrier, and even if it worked it would require a longer dogbone. I've heard people hinting at utilizing a different means in some of the showrooms on Tamiya Club. Thoughts?

Here i got a Completely Brand New in the Box Unused Never Installed Futaba 6XAS. This radio is for anything Surface and is the Surface version of Futaba's popular 6XA Heli & Airplane Series. I have had a total of 3 of these radio's and have used it in one of my old Tamiya Semi's that had the Tamiya Multi Function Unit installed in it and the radio can also be used in Tanks, Sailplanes, and pretty much anything thats surface. I am selling this to help fund another project that i'm currently working on. I am also a member at a few other forums besides this one and maybe you've seen me list else where as well. I was asking $125.00 for it but will go to my lowest of $100.00. The shipping will be $8.50 to anywhere in the United States and I would perfer payment via PayPal but if Money Order is all you can do because no PayPal account or for whatever reason then that is fine too. You can contact me at web_stat@hotmail.com, this email is also my PayPal email address. links of pics is below and if you'd like more pics of it then feel free to email me and i can take more if would like.

I had to let em go cause i needed money to fund a project that i'm building. I'm also sorry for posting it in this area, reason i did was to get more viewers that would really have use for it being it's a 2 stick radio that i know are famous for use with 3-speeds and tanks as well as tractor trucks.

Newbie to the vintage thing needs some help! I just got my mitts on a tamiya countach cs. It's in pretty good shape but I need a c parts tree and a decal sheet to start the rebuild. Also, I have a kyosho nostalgia shelby cobra body. The lexan is cracked in several places but all of the little plastic detail pieces are still there. So if you need bits for yours, look me up. Thanks all!
