Thanks for posting the pics. Not as fast as it looks, best speed so far is 39.9 MPH on GPS. I've got five more props to test this weekend.
BrushlessHawaii
06-18-2003, 07:46 PM
which prop was 39.9?
I got a P-275
Hoping it's a good one. I'm to new to know about prop differences and customizing

The prop was a P280 SS.

Whats the setup? Same as BH's with the 260?
If so, you should be seeing better than 40 with it I'd think.
Have you played with props? Drop down a little to a 275 and see how it does. Should let it wind out.

I think that BH is using the same hardware as my Manta Ray. This is not the first prop on the boat, I have tested many smaller props and can get the RPMs up, but no gain in speed. Who told you that the Manta Ray should run faster? Tony at WHH says that it should run about 43 MPH, but after a couple of hours on the phone with him, he has run out of suggestions. Before I started to dial it in myself, it only ran 34 MPH. I am waiting to see how BH does with his boat. I know another guy in Iowa that is about to get his Manta Ray wet, three boats should give us a good average speed to expect. I have four new props to test this weekend including the ABC MW3.

sounds good 3 of us to try different options.
I'm running a new zenoah 260 - minor Mods
Walbro 257 Big Bore Carb
and a p275 Prop
So once I get mine Going I'll report back
I'll prolly get a GPS & have my buddy buy it with his discount :)
I'm hoping to get it for around $75-$80 tops it's $99 regular

Thats where I picked mine up at. Had to bid on several but finally got one.
Shannon, I guess rigs look faster than they really are. No one told me they should run faster, but I guess I'm 'hoping' it along for you.

06-21-2003, 03:30 PM
Actually guys, I haven't changed the prop yet. A little super glue to secure the throttle cable housing so that I could get WOT every run and some aluminum tape to close off that gap in the SPD III drive. I bought the sound level meter and was really trying to get a baseline sound level without the muffler. (89 db was the highest reading that I got without the muffler) I am going swimming this afternoon to see if I can retrieve the prop and shaft that I lost last month. That prop was a P275 SS modded by a guy in N.Y. and it was the fastest prop that I had run until the shaft and prop went to the bottom. (don't ask me how I lost it, it is a little embarassing)

Well, I broke the cardinal rule. Because we were going on vacation, I put the shaft back into the drive cartridge and put the boat in storage in the basement, but didn't tighten and locktite the screw. You guessed it, I forgot to locktite and tighten the screw before I put the # 12 Pennzoil boat into the water. No need to guess any more, the screw comes out during high speed run, let off the throttle and the flex shaft, cartridge, and prop goes to the bottom of the lake. That's the dirty laundry on the clothes line. I have been an aircraft mechanic and aerospace engineer for over 40 years and should not make a mistake like this, dammed that was a nice prop. Do you think that the guy in N.Y. will ever forgive me?

My running place is a local boat ramp and unless I was to get there at o'dark 30 in the morning, I'm SOL. By then all the full size guys start coming in.
When I did my last testing was during a weekday and early in the morning again.
Work schedule vs pregnant wife vs boating makes for one beat to hell person. But its on the priority list to get it done.
I've got to join that 40mph club also.

Shannon, Good news about your speed. The 260 is swinging that big ol prop?
I like that type of commitment. It almost makes me want to take the pipe off and keep working with the setup on the stock exhaust..... It'll be quieter. Makes me feel that it can possibly get to 40 with it if I was to do a few more tricks to the hull.
Tricks--- wetsand the bottom
straighten the bottom checking for hooks
play more with props--- I have four more coming in
Steve and Dusty, your boats will rock. They're starting out good because you're putting the right equipment in it to make it perform.
Lax, you old dog. When you get ready to knock some teeth out, let me be there. I need a good laugh. :)

I definately want some speed but since most of my running will be on the bay and in rivers (inlets to bay so usually somewhat choppy water) I don't know how fast I'll be able to run anyway. I hope to get about 35 - 40 without mods but from what I hear the Mac engine is more of a powerhouse than a performance engne but having 32cc can't hurt.:D
I kinda think who really gives a crap how fast your going if you can look at your buddy and grin while your doing it.

Steves boat is going to be the 'Can Opener' out of the group. Reason for that is because he'll be tearing through everything.
I've always invisioned running my boat on smooth water but with slight 3-6" rolls to it a few meters apart. That would be enough to get it flighty but not crazy like in the chop.
Ever watch an offshore boat race in calm water and all the sudden the boats start coming out all but the prop....
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Talking more about big #'s. Reason I'm going after them is because:,
I have nothing else to do,
I have no rough water to play on and the calm gets too boring unless you're running wfo.
Next is the challenge of it. I never thought playing with set ups could be so much fun.
Speaking of challenge, My boat runs a solid uper 30's with a stock g230. I'm happy, but like most of us, I'm not pleased. If out in the rough all day, that would be a rush, so till then the quest for the hidden mph's is my essence.
--------------------------------------------------
While writing this, I called one of my buddies to see if he was running this weekend. At least if he was to be there, it would be easier to deal with the full size boaters.
Humm, No. Not this weekend. The 4th is a four day for most of us and he told me to get my #$#$ together and be ready to test starting early friday morning.
Okay Dieter! Your're the man. I respect his opinion when I can halfway understand what he's saying (no oblo englesh):D but on the phone he told me to tweak a prop or two, buy fresh gas on the way there and bring charged batteries for the GPS.
--------------------------------------------------------
Here's what I've got to work this weekend:
The two dull ones are a 270 & 275. They need the works, balance, sharpen and polish
There's a bc 275 that came with the boat and it finally got dinged up so it'll get some attention too.
Look closely and you'll see a big round ear bc prop. Thats a 1475 thats normally run on riggers and hydros but she's going to get some attention with a double check on all the above.
You dont' hear of many folks running round ears on mono's but who knows what might happen. If the #'s are not there according to the GPS, then that gives me some room to experiment right? RIGHT!
I can see it with the tounge trimmed off alittle and the rounded tips having more of a straight edge to them after its done. Sounds like a ball to me considering the prop was $10 and perfect!
Also on order are two more props-- Though hydro series from Octura, they are new and cheap off another forum. These are a(n) 2.4/3 & a 2167/3. Picked those up for $28 w/shipping. Thirty bones for a little experimenting and a lot of time keeping me entertained. & who knows, I might even gain a mph or two.:)
Alright guys, I've talked and now its time to spend time with the wife.
Regards,
Jamie

Hi guys, my testing with the box stock 260 in the Manta Ray leads me to believe that I am at the top of the torque curve, but below the H.P. curve. My max RPM is about 12-13 K, which sounds about right for this engine and the WHH wet pipe. I think that I will order an onboard tach to record max RPMs.
The ABC H-31 gives me 36.7 MPH, the ABC MW3 gives me 37.6 MPH, the Prather P275 gives me 37.5 MPH, the Octura X482 gives me 39.9 MPH, and the Prather P280 SS gives me 42.0 MPH. All props are sharpened, balanced, and polished. All testing was at 89 degrees F, no wind, no current, and flat water. The H-31 and the MW3 had much more prop walk than the others. I got 42.5 with the P280 SS and 3-5 MPH surface wind and 2-3 inch chop.
Hope this info helps.

ROCK ON MAN!
The slight feeling of jealousy is creeping up on me, but I'll try to be nice:D
WHH gives great instructions and you can't go wrong unless you just flat ignore them. They give good diagrams and templates to place on the back of the hull with the hole alignments. Get it lined up, a few pieces of tape and mark your holes. TOO EASY
They'll give you step by step directions for the break-in of the engine also. The only thing you'll need us for will be to tell us how well its going. lol
I'll be breaking in my 260 on regular 2 stroke at 7oz -1gal. Do that for 2-3 tanks and easy running with short full throttle blasts, (not substained) and lots of putting around. Mine has the clutch also, so it'll spend a few minutes sitting in the water ideling.
After that, I'll run pretty much whatever full synthetic I can get my hands on at the same ratio. A lot of the racers say 6-8 oz per gallon. Sounds like a lot, but at the rpm's these things turn, rather rich than lean and risk seizing.
You have Klotz? A lot of my buddies that drag race fullscale outboards use it. A $7-10k powerhead turning over 10k rpms !!!
Its all a matter of opinion, but I dont' think anyone here will twist your arm for a certain brand.
Take care and talk to us when you can.

a pint of the oil came with my kit, and the holes were drilled already. Some silicone to seal screw holes and exaust hole. Put some high temp silicone between exaust manifold and pipe to seal it from leaking oil. Put exaust on before radio box so you can get your finger around muffler with silicone at transom. Put some silicone in muffler hole before putting it through back of boat to get a good seal. All i needed was to put in the radio and the tools to install hardware.Mostly allen keys, grease the drive shaft and the drum it slides in. The pro mods and high outputs were the 23cc models only. If you are going by their web site, that is way out of date. They told me they don't recommend any mods to the 260 because of its already high performance.

Thought that I'd give Team Wakeballs an update. Best speed to date is 50.2 MPH with the stock G260 and wet pipe. Best prop is a modded Octura X482 cut down to 76 mm and lots of whittling. The Manta Ray starts to chine walk at 46 MPH and just about gets out of control at 50 MPH.

Hey Flyer, how have you been? You should be getting open water soon, shouldn't you?
The prop is my own mod, lots of trial and error goes into one like that. When I told Tony C. how fast my Manta was running, he wanted that prop. Naturally I said no, but I offered to mod one for him. His only ran 49.7 on my boat with the exact same set up. Now you guess which one is in my box, ha ha.

i think you will find m8 that your boat will run faster in choppy water.....ive got a BONZI FOUNTAIN RTR WITH BZX4 MOD (ZENOAH G260 ENGINE)im using an OCTURA 275 2 BLADE...the boat is fast ontake off but i loose top end speed,when using GPS its says that i was only doing 39 to 40 mph....when u think that its highly modified boat it should go faster ....well i put an octyra 3 blade(x470) on the boat is faster top speed ,but its slow to start up and when you had slow down to the turn the boat took ages to get full speed again... so im looking for idears ? i did put a turn fin on and she turns a lot better now.... but in turms of top speed on these standard ZENOAH G260 EHGINES do these engine really take you to over 50 mph....and with a BONZI BZX4 MOD whats speeds can we expect... i did GPS the boat in rough water and the boat look as if it was flying(really going fast)and when we read the GPS it said 50mph,so was the boat doing 50mph or was the sat nav(crap) in rough water ....did it give a true reading or not..... :D :D :D http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=183804

Rico, you can cut the prop (470-3) so that it will hold the rev's high in the turns and accelerate faster & still give the same high numbers.

With a stock G260 and a P280 prop, you can get about 45+ mph out of a Manta Ray by making sure that your pipe length is correct. If you do not run a Hanson type header where you can adjust the length, you shoul consider the change. You can make 1/2" adjustments in either direction and see a change in speed. The wet headers from WHH will not necessarily give you the best performance.

Wooo HOOOO!!!! :D @ Fisherman
Thats the kind of overpowering fun I like to read about! Its going to be a handful at speed & take some time to dial in. Ever seen a mono hull blow over like a tunnel boat? Mine did after going from the RC230 to a 260. She'd reach lift off speed & the bow would rise, then prop walk around. Ran the new engine through break in and started working on setup then decided to toss the 230 back in. Kinda wish I'd have stuck with it.
No means knocking you with this endeavor:). Its going to be a different animal going from the heavier Homi to the lighter & MUCH more powerful Hanson engine. Be sure & check the CG as its going to change.
Please, please, please,.. (did I say please?) keep us posted on this man.
Humm, maybe the bug will bite to put another one back in. PEACE.

I keep posting on it, i should be through with fitting the new engine today or tommorow ill try to get some pics of the boat running as soon as possible. Im thinking about painting the hull and definitely gonna switch to an spdIII drive asap. When i went to the hobbyshop to order the engine i was surprised to find out they had one promod in stock. That saved some time without having to ship the engine. Also this boat was completely stock prior to this engine, not even a set of trim tabs, but thats all changing.

C ya back ricco after more tips to get ya boat quicker lol the 280cut down to 275 is an old trick it gives you the same size prop but with a higher pitch rate, same type of cut as my ss275 but you leave the edges more rounded you can also back cut it and take the bottom of the leading edge away cos this slows the prop down only used for acc not top speed you have to remeber that when cutting props you gain in one area and lose in others you cant always have your cake and eat it. oh ricco one thing your forgetting did i tell you about the new octura prop i got on my new lynx its a 3 blade like the 470 but with alot more pitch lol did i not tell you that, i guess we cant all give our little secrets out lol let the races begin, c ya at the lake on sunday :) now what was the number of that prop again lol think my mind has slipped me again lol

Burkey, I like your style man. Especially the chat about the props.
Here's one of the fastest on my Enforcer G'.
Back cut &
barr cut,
rounded tips,
tounge removed &
cupped a little on the leading edge.
*note, the barr cut (the little dip next to the hub) is very small at this point. I did several mods to this prop & that was the last. Next would be to increase the depth by 2mm & possibly go wider by 2mm also. Test each mod by running & then try again. :)
Ps, steel is a real pain to work. :o

OK guys, here's the low down on my 50 MPH Mantaray. The prop is only one part of the setup, the hull has been straightened and all edges sharpened, the clutch and water pump have been removed, I am using a single sharpened and profiled rudder offset 2 3/4 inches to the right of centerline, the water pickup is only 1/32 inch below the hull, the drive is angled 2 degrees to the left and lowered 3/16 inch. The only mod to the engine is the WT 257 carb instead of the WT 644 carb.
Now for the prop, it started as an Octura X482, it is cut down to 76 mm diameter, most of the tongue is removed, the tips are rounded, the blades are pitched up, thinned and very sharp, the trailing edge has been bar cut. I leave the blades with a satin finish, (1200 grit wet/dry) because I didn't find any more speed in a mirror finish. I also have a Propshop 7016/3 from Captain Chuck Sharp and Shiney Props, and it runs just as well without any mods.
Now for the down side of 50 MPH, the boat is a nightmare to drive, in a straight line, the chine walk is so severe that it will make the boat flip if you keep it at that speed long enough. The turns are OK at best, but the boat plows and scrubs off speed. The BEST all around performance is 45-47 MPH.
It takes a combination of hull, drive setup, and prop mods to go fast and corner well. I have found that each of my hulls have a maximum stable speed, the Mantaray is 47 MPH and my Ripper R3 is 53 MPH. (I still have a lot of work to do on it)

Any pics of this setup? Shannon, you're a big time lurker that chimes in every now & then. :D :) BUT WHEN YOU DO talk about your Manta, the whole world listens. :cool:
You made a very good point about the boat having a best all around speed. Same for the G' & any other boat owned. Just because you've got the power to get it there doesn't mean its going to like it.
Props, I don't feel that the shiney surface gives better performance either. A mild wet sand with 600 grit is fine. Folks have discussed the issue & no one can give hard numbers. My copper props are not polished but with wet sanding. As most here know, my favorite is the stainless as they give good shine & hold it. Is it worth it? Only for the bling effect. :cool:
~~~Scrop, here's one I finished for a buddy today. It'll be going on a G' with RC230 too. He said he didn't want it thinned too much in case he hits something. Even gave him a good barr cut for free. This is the second fastest prop I've ran on my rig with that extra cut & by far one of the easiest.
More BLING EFFECT. :eek:
Could've done a back cut along with it, but its a little more work. Left it at this & he'll be happy for sure.
ps, Will it cut you? If you don't handle it with caution, this one will. ;)
nice job i hate stainless props they take forever, i noticed you polished both sides of the blade, i dont polish the back leave it the way it is, just take any bad bits off, it gives it a little grip in the water, thats the theory anyway lol, some say it works some say it dont matter, i have done it both ways and cant say i notice any difference. i notice the cutouts at the back of the back near the hub, you can go a little wider but dont go to deep into the blade, keep the same depth but widen be atleast a couple of mm i would say, anyway try a few and see what ya think, i see its a 275, do the same cut as youve done but with the 280, works a treat and gets you that extra pitch saves the bending of the prop blade as thats the hardest part to get them both the same, keep the back edge very flat no curved edges of the polishing, one last thing, use blue tack, or plastercine to press the prop in when cutting that way you can check one blade against the other to make sure there exactly the same, you might know all this already but it might make some interesting reading for someone who doesnt know, keep it posted on new changes and let us know the results, thats the fun trying new things and finding something that works, keep up the good work.
shannon, is it normel for you guys to offset the drive a few degrees, why when you build the boat dont you put the stuffing tube 4/6mm to the right when building the boat, it normal pratice here, if it still needs left rudder you move it along another mm and so forth till the boat runs true with no left rudder, helps stop the walk a little to, remember the bigger the prop and pitch the more trouble with prop walk your gonna have
I'd be happy to hook a fellow boater up! I wear mine everytime out :D :D
Problem with the steel, is its too hard to stop once started. There's a new 280 sitting on the shelf begging to be modded. How wide do you go? That work was done to 3mm at the top. 5mm sounds good?
Cutting the tounge is a good improvement but its a much harder mod.
Now thats a compliment, but I'd rather not do too many copper props.
Try a few props before you settle on the 470-3. I sent you a PM on some ABC props that might work.
