View Full Version : What happened to the Orion Brushless?

I was going through all my old RCCAs, and in the inside scoop of the March 2002 issue, there is a BL motor from Orion called the Orion Vortex. I have never seen this motor. In the caption, it said that the motor was already out. I was just wondering if this motor ever came out, or what happened to it??

Yeah, I remember that too. I did see it on Tower's site, but I'm not sure if it was ever listed as in stock.

The system works great. but the decision was made to "repackage" the ESC in a hard case and size it to more favorably fit in the majority of the current electric R/C cars.

Othwrwise it works great and should be shipped late summer.

Is it comparable to the novak super sport?

Why does all the cool stuff always come out at the end of the driving season? :(

Jeepsdaddy - posts like yours are basically the definition of what is not allowed under the user agreement. The petulant, antagonistic flame job you posted was never intended to further the discussion, but to insult and anger another member of this bulletin board and a company representative that took the time to post a reply to a reasonable question. Knock it off...

Jeeps, please tell us all about what's going on behind the scene's at Orion. I'm sure you know all about the R/C motor industry, release dates, product lines, manufacturing principles, etc.....

So tell us, since you've obviously owned a motor company, and have deisned many brushless motors while trying to put out a complete products line, so let the uninitiated know how it all works......

You are amazing: You can see things in a post somebody didn't write, and then respond to them. You can clearly read Rick Hohwart's mind, so knock us on our asses with your great telepathic ability....

Peace out... :D

It's comparable in the fact it is brushless. But by using sensorless technology we are able to sell the motor an dESC in a way that more closely resembles the way it is now. What I mean is the motor and ESC are not "married" to one another. You can buy the Orion ESC and use one of several Orion motors. The possibility is there for other manufacturers to make motors only that can be used with the Orion ESC.

It is hard to compare performance. But I can tell you the motor and ESC combo ran the entire 4 hour Tamiya enduro with no problems. In my opinion the motor (12 turn equivalent) ran faster the the Novak's (Sport system)with the same run times.

The delays are unfortunate. We have a motor and ESC that work very well but like I said the way the ESC is "packaged" needs to be modified in my opinion and that is what is happening now. Time consuming but necessary.

So no word if its pricing is comparable to Novaks?

Rick

will you have a multitude of winds to choose from like it was supposed to be originally?

if so to what brushed motor will your lowest wind bl be equal to?

Would making a brushless motor that was about as powerful as a hot stock or 19 turn spec motor give even longer run times than a normal, powerful brushless motor? I'd like to try a brushless sometime, but I don't need all the power they have.

The pricing is different than Novak's because you are not buying a system. However initially you will be able to a motor and ESC together..or separately. But the total cost for both will be comparable as far as street price goes.

There will be different winds comparable to 8, 10, and 12 turn motors and later milder motors. 8, 10, and 12 cover most racing uses. The motors can also be fine tuned via the ESC.

nuts.... comparable eh? so that means pretty close to novak's...

looks like i'm just gonna have to shell out tons now.

Rick,

is the controller still made by schulze?
also the last pic of the bl motor that was up on your website sometime ago showed a motor that looked liked motors made by a company named Electronic Model,am i totally wrong here?

i hope im not mistaken as both these companies make great products

thanks rick:)

Crono...yes for the ESC and no for the motor. We actually changed the design and some photos should be up on the website shortly.

In fact we have about 100 motor and ESC combos we are going to sell direct to consumers. They are 12 turn equivalents with the original controller (non hard case) that are the same as what the Team Orion team ran at the Tamiya 4-hour enduro.

Check Team Orion's website for details on how to buy one.

Do you think this would work well in an electric helicopter?

Rick Hohwart

I would not recommend it. The concept of brushless will work but the motors Orion is producing are designed for cars.

Any update on the Orion brushless system. I am looking for a refined system like the Novak system but need more power (i.e. something like the 8 or 10 turn Orion motor).

yeah, its been a while on this thread. i only have one question. i heard that the orion motors do not use neodyne magnets on the motors. is this true?

Short question to Rick, it might be offtopic, and I excuse myself:

"The concept of brushless will work but the motors Orion is producing are designed for cars."

I always wonder how can BL motors be designed so to be so specific?

I clearly understand lower/higher turns but what are basic needs that motor is designed for cars?

Lehner motors (10, 15, 19, 22) series have segmented rotors and so they are more efficient at partial throttle which is good for cars for example. But well, they are also very good in planes, helis and boats.

Or like Hacker C series. They have good can with incorporated heat sink. Great for helis and planes and also great for cars, E-maxx, etc! It is "accidentaly" also good for boats since one can install can cooling with O rings on the ends.

Please enlighten me why don't you recommend it for use in helis?

Anyway, I am just curious and thanks for your reply in advance.

I wish you much success with bringing BL Orion package to the car market :)

perhaps too high of an rpm/v?

Hi Rick

Any chance of a direct link ( either on the forum or in a private message ) as i have just taken a look on the orion site and did not see any information.

Here in the UK the top 3 national championships for touring cars are running a brushless class but just now the only system for sale that we can get in the UK is the novak system and after testing for a magazine review i found it to be slower than i was expecting.

I know this is a old thread but I have to ask are you sure? That seems like a awfull long time to design a new case!
