This is the 2nd attempt to get one of the little Cox Viper P-51ish freeflight models converted to R/C. Lets forget the first attempt for now shall we?

This one is equiped with the stock prop (they are too cute not to use) on a GWS DX motor direct - no gearbox here. Using CS-10 servos, Hitec Feather Rx, Wattage IC-55 ESC and an 8 cell pack of 150mah cells that come inside the free flight model. More on the number of cells later....

I seperated the fuselage halves to do the work. This was very easy. This is about the 3rd or 4th one I have operated on and by far the easiest to seperate. I placed the CS-10's inside the fuse at the rear of the wing sadle with the arms just poking through the sides from little slots cut with an exacto. Using rudder and elevator was simple and I used the control horns from a Wattage LiteStik. They worked great.

Anyway, today was the second flight. The first was made in gusty winds and put it into a tree. Today was dead calm. With a gental toss it was off - took a good deal of right rudder to make it track straight under power, but the trim was enough to straighten this out. It was an absolute blast to slow this wayyy down and putt around the tree tops in my back yard.
After a few minutes the dreaded cutoff kicked in and a gental gliding circuit around and over my house put her down in the back yard without a scatch.

Now for the problem - the motor is toast! After 2 flights (or 1.5 actually). I suppose a swap to 6 cells would be in order as well as one of the carbon brushed versions of the same motor. A cooling vent would help too huh?

I'll probably pick up one of the GWS servo/receiver/ESC packs this weekend as that should let me save a bit of weight.

Sorry I don't have current measurements, but it had plenty of power and I should be able to get by with 6 cells easily. I do know on 6 cells the motor does not get vary warm at all in full throttle static runs for several minutes. This is with plenty of cooling though....

Well, had to tell someone. Who's next!

Now for a question - Does anyone know if the ESC that comes with the GWS pack mentioned above has a restartable cutoff or does it die and no restart?

Thanks all! This slowflier stuff is a blast!!!

the gws esc does indeed have a restart function.
