why are most RC car radios only 2 and 3 channel?

Nitro needs 3 (some only need 2)

Most Nitro's do not need a 3-channel Radio. Unless you have a manually operated 2-speed gearbox(e.x:E-maxx)or a "switch to go in reverse" button (e.x:T-maxx) you will only need a 2 channel radio.

I have an E-Maxx and a Savage
Both can use a 3 channel radio.

I know the majority of the time you only need 2-3 channels but there are instances where I need that 4th or 5th channel for cool little gadgets I'm trying to add to my RS4 Rally

well, get a radio for a robot or a boat. you can buy multi channel radios for surface use, but they wont be a pistol radio.
