So how do yall like to r40. I want to get a competative touring car and was looking at teh kyosho v1 rrr, r40, or a serpent. what do yall recommend?
Saboteur

All are great, but each car will handle differently out the box and will drive a different style. The RRR is equipped, but the R40 can be raced box stock and for optional tuning some LW upgrades for a total of $80 will help the R40 pick up the pace easily as well as give you more tuning. For starters, the graphite shock towers, LW 2speed .8module, and both LW shafts is what I started on the R40 and indeed it's faster than B4. Sure the gearing is lower, but with much less rotating mass on the 2speed and less weight on the drivetrain the car runs a lot faster. Serpent is great but only if you have good part support. Fairly moderate for price. Kyosho may be a lil higher, and the R40 is cheap. I'll probably run the 8th onroad more because my LHS has parts for it in stock better than the R40. I'm at the point where to say my R40 is great, but comes down t the hobby, planning on racing, and buying a real car at this point I'd rather have two rc cars instead of many so the Mugen and R40 stays. :)

PS-For the price of the VoneRRR you can get an R40 and buy some of the optional upgrades for it. I'd test the car stock though as the R40 out the box handles pretty well.

well if you guys check out the nitro forum I wanted a race ready touring car.
I have made a final choice on a HPI R40
now i need to get to all the nitty gritty...
Pipe I have picked out, a cheap but good RD touring car pipe $37 off ebay
and the starter box is also choosen simple but effective duratrax starter box
now I am going through hell trying to pick a good, but not too expensive radio, remember this is for club racing, not pro racing so I do not need a $300 radio.
the engine is also a stumper, but I might get a HPi 12R XS for getting used to the car.
the body I have choosen either a Proline Nemesis, or Mazda 6
I already have servos for it.
so you guys got any tips on the radio or a subsitute engine (under $150 for now)
for the radio I have been looking at these three, but of course not limited to them.

when i started i didn't know anything about centex clutches so i just built it and forgot it. my acelleration was weak even with an RB V12 engine. then i fought with it for a long time and one thing that worked for me was a spacer between the large clutch bearing and the clutch bell it self. i also bought my JR XS3 radio off of ebay.

I'd go with the DSM version of the JR radio...Once you go DSM, you really don't ever need to worry about frequency conflicts on race day ever again...Besides, the built-in failsafe is pretty nice "feature" of the DSM

well i got my r40 finished and finaly driving it.so far im sorry to say but i like my NTC3 better.but that might change once i get used to the car.so far i had to replace the chassis and carbon fiber top plate.ebay seller forgot to mention the car was wrecked hard at one time.it seems to handle alot better with no body on it.right now it has a camaro body on it,gonna try a stratus body as thats what handled the best on the NTC3.are there any other good bodies for this car?i like a car that can actually turn at high speed like my NTC3 can.i also put a front one way diff in it.i dont really care for it though but im also not used to it yet as my NTC3 had diffs.gotta learn to squeze the brakes easy.for some reason the center belt doesnt seem tight enough, might have the wrong size bearings on the tensioner.i threw it off once so far.damn little rocks keep getting stuck in the front and rear belts.the brand new front belt has 2 tears in it already from 6 tanks of really driving it.its a nice car though,im just not a belt drive person.it is fast though, gonna try some different gearing tomorrow.hopefully i can run the gearing the way i have my NTC3 setup.i like to run the lowest first gear and the highest second gear.

Just in case you don't know, the HPI challenge is going on the weekend of Aug 13,14, so if you want to have two fun days of racing, and your in driving distance of Deleware, and have the time, you should come out. It's not too late to send in an entry form. These events normally get 200 entries and it's just a fun weekend of racing with prizes. There is a 200 entry limit so if you send in your entry form and your number 201, you might not get in, so if you plan on coming, get your entry in quick. The r40 (nitro modified) looks like it's going to end up being the biggest class, that weekend with some good competition.

Been away at camp and now back at home. I went to the track to run the R40 again and she runs nice. It hooks up well with no oil in the rear diff. I'll probably pick up new pinions to experiement with the gear ratios. Pretty much I have quite a tall ratio, however will try a 21T or 20T first, and a 27T or 26T in 2nd.

The LW 2speed should about $52-$57 dollars. If your LHS has it in that price range get it. It shouldn't be any more than $57.

Notice the beautiful header. :D The engine is not bolted in right now. Had a little mishap the other day. The wire to the throttle/brake server got shreded by the pavement and it got stuck at WOT.
Luckly I had steering control. I pointed it towards me, and I attempted to stop it with my foot. Kinda dumb at my part. Very scary when its coming at me at 40+ mph.
I missed it and it hit my 1:1 car wheel, bounce off and then I made it do doughnuts then I caught it and pinched the fuel line. Popped off the front shock cap, Bent the shock tower and cracked the bulkhead a little. I just pounded the shock tower back and will glue the bulkhead.
I love this motor so far. Consumes alot of fuel. More than my ntec 2.5 or t-15.

08-30-2005, 09:30 AM
YEESH! I'm surprised you got that kinda header on there. Isn't rubbing on the pulley or belts? This is what the yokomo Gt4 header would be like. PS, as far as fuel ecomony goes, it's a .18 so naturally it will use up a bit of fuel.

08-30-2005, 06:51 PM
Not rubbing on anything. Like I said, it had a meeting with MR. Hammer. And Mr. Hammer got it into shape. :D

Is that the .12/15 ss motor?

Is it possible to charge a starter box battery with a Duratrax parhanna digital charger? If so how.
Saboteur
09-02-2005, 08:32 AM
Well first check if your charger can charge upto 12v batteries. My charger says it can do that so what you do is charge at .5 or 1amp. Depending on how much juice is in your box it will take an hr or so. I safely charged mine at 2amps no problem, but start with 1amp.

Yo guys i will get my r40 on nov the 8th, as it is my bday then! I got one of the last ones at £99 and i just won a hpi .12r xs race engine brand new with an sg shaft for £62 on ebay inc air filter and plug! What a bargain! What are the best option parts for acceleration? :)
Saboteur
09-30-2005, 03:56 PM
LW 2 speed (.8module not the 1.0)
LW shafts (2speed shaft and middle)
You will need both as that will really make the car come alive on acceleration and any other parts of throttle. The stock is pretty good too as its lower, however despite its taller gear ratio, the LW gears aren't far behind at all. Infact they seem to be just as fast. If I had the time I'd like to do a test, but I don't have all of the stock gears stuff.

Mods done is a Venom failsafe, Ofna Centax w/HPI pinions and ofcourse strapped the Rody back in. The R40's drivetrain is noticably smoother on and off throttle than the CD3. The 2005 version will be out soon and that badboy has quite a few new upgrades.

Yeah I made a post there, but didn't get a chance to upload the pics. I'll post it there. As for your box I told Squeedily you may have been hitting the flywheel or bumping it incorrectly. A 750 motor won't have more of an advantage to a dual motor box. It has RPMs, but you need torque. Two 550 motors are the same as a 750.

Forget about buying the Hara parts. They are so expensive you might as well get an 8th onroad. At the moment you can add these parts to your R40:

LW 2speedshaft
LW middle shaft
LW chassis
CF shock towers
All these are a start and will make a big difference.

You can try mugen's site, tower hobbies, or ebay. Some sites really don't show them.
Josh-I'd shoot for the RR12LL3 or N12LL3. Those are really great and are bout part with the JPs and RB Rody Roar. It all depends on your track, but always remember, with nitro sedan if you got no traction you're going no where fast. The TZ is great for short to medium tracks while the Novas are great all around.

All goes according to gearing, traction, wind speed, aerodynamics, engine, pipe, how the engine is tuned, etc. There's so many variables. :)

Kawasaki-The R40 doesn't come with an engine. It depends on what you put into it. The car can take SE engines, but you need that RB or Serpent side exhaust header. Yokomo SE header works great too. No reason to get an SE engine anyway..slap on a nice .12RE and you're set for racing.
Seabass-RD logics is great, but I'd go with pipe best suited for the engine you go with. An RD logics will be good for my RB, but from what I've seen the RB pipe works better for it.

Tune your engine for performance. Most Novarossi's don't run that hot especially in hot weather. Check the needle settings. My RB is different than the engine you have which I believe is an older RS12. Not every engine has the same needle settings for optimum performance or break in. The proceed is an 8th onroad which is a different class.

The difference between the stock and LW chassis is VERY noticable; it feels like NOTHING! It also stiffens the car a little bit. Some say the alum brace makes the car too stiff, but they do use the graphite side engine mount. My friend has mugen shocks on his R40 and they work pretty well. For the same price as the HPI's or a buck less they are stronger.

i dont own an R40, but i will go ahead and say an R40 isnt a car for a beginner, its mostly a full race or extreme bashing racing car, 2 quick nitro on road cars that hpi has are the rs4 evo, and the rs4 18ss, i would see what kinda parts you can get in Denmark because it might not be worth the wait if you ahve to wait 3 weeks for something like a tire or a tie rod, i hope this helps

The R40 is a great car box stock but isn't a basher. It's better suited for the track. The '05 Hara R40 edition would be great competition for the Mugen and Serpent. If those are the only two cars you have to choose from go for it then. Nothing is worse than ordering parts often. The standard R40 kit is great for beginners and upcoming racers alike. Mugen and Serpent are also great kits as well, though it just depends on your skill of building. If you do race, a setup guage is good to have as well as the board.

And there are some talking about Some of the other local hobby stores, are going to distribute HPI again. So i do race, but i'm just a beginner, and i'm probably not going to race in the Danish Championship. But the Races in the Club. for a start :)

You will need the yokomo GT4 header to make the .18cvr work. That one and the RB are similiar. Serpent makes one, but it's not that durable. As for pipe, RD logics and skyline(great pipe) are great for the money. Skyline has has a lot of titles under its belt.

I posted this question on another forum with no response... anyone ?
The other day while driving on the track every once in a while my car would rev really high and it would go nowhere... my finger was off the trigger... then the engine would wind down and it seemed the clutch would then engage... and I could continue driving like normal... I went home and decided to open the clutch up and take a look... there was no circular clutch spring, I thought it might have shot across the room and I didn't notice, very strange... I fixed it and yesterday I went to the track, and this problem started to happen right away, in fact I couldn't get a lap around without having the same problem... I opened the clutch up at the track and the spring was gone... ***... Am I going crazy ? I just reordered a new spring, so I'm waiting on that to come in, but what is happening to me ? Anybody have a clue ?
Thanks
Saboteur
02-17-2006, 03:07 PM
That little spring just holds the clutch weights. The clutch spring is the thick round one that slides onto the shaft. The round rubber like disk is the clutch shoe. The Mugen centax doesn't use that spring. Check how far down you have the adjuster nut. To tight and it will rev a lot before going anywhere. Too loose and it will be the same. I personally switched the ofna cd3 pro centax onto my car and others use the mugen centax. BOth work a lot better than the stock centax.

Actually the dark adjustment spring was very loose, that could be what was causing the very high revving...

Yep definately that could be it. Adjust the adjuster nut (cap on the spring) so you can see about a thread or two of the SG clutch nut. Try it out. I'd opt for the mugen silver spring as it's harder and will allow you to make less clutch adjustment and see better results.

Hey guys I'm new to Radio Control Car Action forums but have been reading the magazine for years. As my sn indicates I started out with the first HPI RS4 then moved up to the R40. The R40 is great and I love the ease of working on it, I drive it in a large parking lot that is level and smooth but has some bumps (very good lot compared to others). I know the R40 was designed with track racing in mind but I only drive it in this parking lot.
The car handles well, but I would like to adjust the setup because I know it can be greatly improved. I was wondering if anyone knows out of experience or from reference a great parking lot setup for the R40. Basically the settings for ride height, camber, toe, what kind of springs to get and front stabilizer settings.
I have all stock parts except a front one-way diff and a O.S. 12TR(P)-T engine with an HPI tuned exhaust.
Saboteur
03-06-2006, 01:04 PM
Personally, the only I have is for a track. Bashing wise, I just run it stock with a 5-6mm ride height, -1.5mm toe in rear, 0-0.5 toe out front, no camber front or rear. Stock springs work very well. Use 6mm preload front and 3mm preload rear, which the shocks in the stock position. Remember oneways will disengage when braking. It's common for it to spin out.

LW shafts (2speed and middle)
LW .8 module two speed
Graphite front/rear shock towers
HPI LW chassis (GET THE HPI ONE...the other chasssis are heavier)
Aluminum shocks (stronger than stock obviously)
oneway diff
4 bevel gear diff mod ($9 makes rear diff into a 4..stable acceleration)

Saboteur, I finally got that OS TZ .18 motor broke in, in my R-40. She is a missle and she handles what I did was, 4 bevel gear rear diff mod, put 35 mm wide CRC tires on the rear and removed the rear swaybar. With this setup you get all the traction you need. I estimate that I am hitting 65-70 I am gonna put my speedo on it so I can get a reading. So if any of you other guys out there want to outlaw your R-40 for some highspeed parking lot racing don't be afraid to drop a OS TZ.18 in her with a little tinkering you can get her to hook up. :D CRC website is http://www.teamcrc.com

04-15-2006, 04:25 PM
I kept my rear swaybar in and it was pretty great regardless for handling. That TZ is a great engine if you wanna bash with for sure :D. I no longer have my R40 and just run 8th, but I help a friend out at the track who runs an upgraded r40 with nova ls3 and vantage pipe. That's a great combo for nitro onroad and boy does that engine scream. I'd like it if HPI made an even lower gear ratio on the .8 2speed, but they probably figured with it being lighter it will spool up faster anyway.

Therefore I just sold the car. I may get into nitro onroad again, but will go with Mugen since my lhs is slouching on HPI parts.

Hey Everyone; I recently upgraded my shocks to the HPI competition threaded set with a 70wt oil and leaving the stock springs. However, after installing the set, my R40 has a much lower ground clearance. I fixed this (sort of, ground clearance is still lower than with stock shocks) by tightening the springs, but now, the entire shock body (#75196) is visible. Is this how these shocks are supposed to be on the R40? Does anyone recommend any other springs/accessories?
The shocks I got: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLMD7&P=7

*edit* BAH, I just tried typing a whole big post and IE freezes up  Anyway..
Decals - No real issue with the car honestly, except maybe HPI could include tougher front cvas. One person said it may have to due with a tight servo saver so check on that.
Martin- I've had the same shocks too, but swapped the fronts for a stiffer spring as those blue springs are really soft. Unfortunately since front droop has evolved and now goes in horizontally, raising the droop to the point where it rubs on the block will raise the car and offer no suspension action.Usually no droop or atleast 1mm is fine. Refer to this chart for springs as it shows you rate, length, and what fits what car. :)

With the few upgrades, few spares n tires I sold it for $160. Resell value on them is a bit low. Also there are more upgraded versionsof the R40 lingering around so unless you have say a 2004 hara kit maybe u can get $250 for it with Ti screws. What do you have with your car? I can better help you for a price to sell it at. Check ebay for great deals on 8ths.

Thanks Saboteur for the spring chart link. I was actually using the stock black springs from the original kit, and not the blue ones that come with the sport shock set. I believe HPI has three different shock sets; stock Hara edition uses "THREADED ALUMINUM SHOCK SET" while their top line is "Competition Aluminum Threaded Shock Set". The later don't come with any springs. Looking at Hara's setup, I think that I can find the appropriate springs--he's got some red one's in the rear... Thanks again.

Why is that? One thing I have read about this car as well as many others that they must be run on well paved tracks? At these costs, why cant they be run on regular parking lot tracks? Not parking lots that look like minefields, but smooth enuf not to wreck the car.....

In general you want to run any onroad car on a smooth surface. It can have some cracks or so, but not big pot holes and tons of gravel laying about. If it were a rally car then it'd be fine. You don't really have to drive the R40 on a paved track as I took it anywhere unless it were dirty.

Hi Zafiris. Welcome to the forums and happy new years. I wouldn't recommend to ANY beginner to drive a powerful motor in a nitro sedan. Being that this is your first post I doubt anyone here told you to do so. The most you can do is adjust the throttle trim to reduce overall travel to get use to the speed. As you learn to drive the car you can open it up a bit.

Same to you man. Definately try driving on a smoother cleaner surface. That will help with traction issues. ;)

mmmkk......
Step 1: Loot the truck. :D
Step 2: clean the place up
Step 3: re-pave if needed
Step 4: practice, patience, persistance.
Step 5: get a spektrum, you won't regret it.
Step 6: OWN your friends

I agree. A lil TLC for the track and it'd be great! The layout looks awesome, but along with a newly repaved surface it'd be sweet.

New Gas filter? You mean fuel filter right? Post some new photos of your ride when you're done. Mine is gonna be fully set once I get the Hudy system.
