Mike, I just purchased two N20PN electric motors. Can you tell me what gear box to use what speed control and prop. I am new in micro electric flying. Also can this motor be used to power the Guillow smaller 16 thru 24 inch wingspan models. Also what battery pack and how many amps do these motors draw. Any info would be great. E-mail Dauntbmbr@aol.com thanks

Well ill try to give you as much info as i can.As for the gear box i made my own using the motor, the gears, and prop from an e-machines plane.I also used two small ballbearings from two cheap fan motors i found at an electronics store.you can buy the gears from todds models or from wes-technik.but im not sure what kind of prop to use.I use a FMA mini 5 speed control that I cut off the shrink wrap and put on some lighter wires.right now i am working on a Guillows piper super cub 20" that should weigh approximately 1 to 1.5oz. ready to fly.ive heard that you dont want to use more than 3 cells with this motor because it can burn it up, but thats about all you need with this motor since it has a big punch for its size.a 3 cell 50ma should be fine maybe 100ma for longer durations.Or 4 120 ma NMH cells witch is what i use.im not sure how much current they draw but it can't be much.I hope this helps.

I think this is the same motor used in the Kenway KR-1, which has 4.2:1 gearing for use with 2-4 cells. Todd's models (toddsmodels.com) sells this setup (and the motors for $2 each without the gearbox). John Worth (Cloud9) also sells the Kenway and wrote about it in a recent RCMicroflight issue. If you want to use the motor and build your own gearbox from scratch I'd suggest starting with the info in John's column. I recently purchased the Kenway setup from Todd's models. Mostly what you pay for is a nice plastic casing to hold the motor and gears and attach to a plane plus bushings and shafts. I haven't used it yet, though.

Thanks for all the info. I will probably use the N20PN motor in the smaller 20 inch wingspan Guillow kits. Thanks again.

Hi Guys:
I'm glad to see some folks looking at the N20 motor as a micro R/C power plant. I have been using the N20 (Kenway KR1-D) for about 3 or 4 years with great results. Here is a brief summary of what my experience has been.
First off I have found that the N20 is available in two winds. The one offered by Kenway is the lower voltage (2 or 3 cells), the version from Watt Age is a higher voltage for the B-2 model which uses up to 6 cells. The motor from All Electronics is the low voltage wind, which I have tested on my setup and found to be the same as the Kenway.
The best gearing I have found to be from 4:1 to 5:1. I usually run the low voltage motor on 4 or 5 cells. Yes I know that seems a little high, but if you keep the static current to 1 Amp. Max the motor will live quite well. The only motor failure I had was while using 6 cells. The com. came apart due to excessive RPM. The brushes were fine even after dozens of flights. In my opinion the motor life mainly depends on keeping the current at or below 1 amp.
I build my own gear drives and do a lot of prop tuning to get the most out of this great little motor. This motor will deliver from 5 to 8 watts very reliably. I'm not able to post any pictures at the present time, however, my brother has some pictures on his personal web site if you are interested. The information there is a couple years old but it gives some idea of what can be done.

I just bought a bunch of N20's for .45 cents a peice at a local electronics store.
Here is a picture of what I did with 4 of them. Yes, it's an old cub wing and some foam from the local hardware store.
