Thanks again everyone.
Congrats on the buggy! I was in the same boat as you about a month or so ago and have not looked back! I have raced my brother and friends and killed them and have bashed the heck out of it (have to make a video) and I’m totally satisfied with the car. I have made a jump around 4ft tall almost like a skateboard ramp and it sends my car about 18ft up and 20ft out and I can run it on that all day long… my brothers Rustler can not say the same:)
Casey I think I can sell the wifes car for around 3G so it wont be so bad to get a new car for around 2G..... but if k_bojar wants a LR for a trade he should get to plugging the coins:cool:

I shimmed the carb from the stock engine and fit it into my hyper 8port. Needed some RTV to seal it. It runs great. Tunes much easier. Just saved myself $50-$90 for a new carb.

ok, I havent drove my buggy in about 2 months. I just fixed it today. 5 minutes into playing with it it break down.
When I push the trigger is screams (red lines) and it sounds like it doesnt catch it doesnt move it takes it a second for it to go, and still doesnt hit top speeds(not even half) I checked the spur gear and it was fine what could be the problem?>:

Ya the temp is good because it never gets hot because its quite cold outside.
But now the crappy hot bodies roto start broke a tooth in the starter box so I need to get a new one.

Should have spent the money on a starter box :);) I'll never use a pull-start or an electric start again...Gawd, I love throwing the car on the car, line it up, attach the glow plug and push down :)

Will the diff from a Hyper 7 fit in the Lightning Pro..... front, center, rear????? the reason I ask is that i blew mine and it is a pain in the butt to get parts for the lightning in my area...and very simple to get parts for a hyper 7..a.thanks

Do you just need the gears? If so I know the MP7.5 fit and the Savage ones also fit.

Hey, I have run about a gallon through my HB lightning rr and i have noticed that it has started to slip when going up steep hills and also makes a screeching noise. When i am running it up a small hill you can hear the gears making a low squealing noise. I have replaced all 3 diffs and rebuilt them. I think the only part that it could now be is the ring gear (also called bevel gear) and the gear that turns it. I was wondering if anyone will confirm this problem and tell me where i can order a new ring gear from. I have checked tower hobbies and can't find anyone who has them. I also am wondering if anyone knows if the kyosho mp7.5 bevel gear would work on my buggy. THANKS

hows the clutch shoes?? i have the pro that is the 3 shoe set up, but the rtr has the mip style set up, and its possible its worn out/melted and the squeek you hear is the spring rubbing the inner clutch bell?? for the 5+ gal ive put thru my pro i have yet to see a diff problem..

Quick ? anyone know if the ofna wing mounts http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCWP8&P=7
will work on the pro. I know the part that goes on the shock tower will not, but will the part that holds the wing on fit? I have broke sooo many and the Ofna one uses a screw not the post thing with a body clip. Thanks hope one of you have the info I need!:)

09-28-2003, 08:10 AM
I don't see how that mount could be made to fit without serious modifications. $19 seems too much to pay for a mount that you'd have to end up cutting and rigging it to fit. The stock mount only costs about $6 if you can find it in stock somewhere. I ended up building my own from aluminum, since it took 3 weeks for my LHS to get one in.. You can see pictures in an earlier post. I think it's around page 20 or so.

well i finally broke down and got a 2nd tsais pipe so i can have one on my buggy, suggestion i posted a few pages back, it performs so well and is so much more appealing for sound but had to make the following mods to make it fit..
http://members.aol.com/ytownfreeman/rc/tsais/4.jpg
stock pipe, note the pressure fitting on top...
http://members.aol.com/crsmp5/rc/tsais/1.jpg
http://members.aol.com/crsmp5/rc/tsais/2.jpg
i unscrewed this fitting from the stock welded boss, drilled and taped a new hole in the pipe for this mounting, rember the aluminum is NOT as thick here, so finecce and loctight required..
http://members.aol.com/crsmp5/rc/tsais/3.jpg
http://members.aol.com/crsmp5/rc/tsais/4.jpg
I then used my dremal to cut off the top of the welded boss a drumb sander and smoothed it out and thinned it out till it cleared the stone/rock shield on my buggy. then i drilled the hole to size and tapped it also, loctited a set screw in it.
this gives the ability to mount the pipe on any savage or buggy with pressure fitting in the top to prevent fuel from plugging the pressure line up.
if none of you have heard this pipe.. i have a vid i can link you to for a 5min demo between a 8 port and picco with this and a few other pipes for sound.. just let me know.. once i get the buggy put back together ill take some pics of it installed.. was doing cleaning job to it.. :D 1st time in 6 months.. found a few items to need attention...
next who else has broken the following..
seized bearings on the rear diff, purpal engine mount plate broken/cracked in 1/2... thats it..
CRSMP5
09-30-2003, 11:26 PM
hows this for additions.. im sick of having to find a "pit bitch" to refuel my car after warm up and right at race time so i added a 2oz hayes header tank... :D also gives the ability to run on its lid for a bit while turn marshales decide if they wanna work or not..

can someone on this forum please help me? I just purchased a barely used lightning pro from the zone, but it didnt include a manual or parts list. Would any of you be willing to part with your copies or even maybe work somewhere at an office or something where they can photocopy everything and mail me. I would be greatful and may even be willing to pay a few bucks for one. Also where is the best online place to get p[arts as far as availability and price? Thanks Alot guys... hope to be on this board for future things...... -Jason

Hey fellow Lightning owners! I haven't posted any race results in awhile, so here's my final one until Spring.
Last night was the final race of our LHS's second 8-race points season. Raced the Lightning for 15 of the races and my Hyper 7 for one. Well, after 16 races here's how I did:
11 - TQs
12 - Wins
1 - Second place
2 - Third place
1 - DNS(Hyper 7 - starter box problems)
All that totals up to two First Place finishes in the points.
Here's how the Lightning looks after all that racing(and no broken parts through it all!!).

Hey everybody:) I finally raced my pro on sunday. I did okay. I had some bad luck though. 30 seconds before the start, the announcer doesn't tell me if my transponder is working or not. I got 6th in the B-main. Not bad considering I had no wing and my engine settings were horrible!:D I had a question about that. Has anyone else using the stock engine had a odd fluctuation in revs during runs? I don't think it is dirt, because I check every time I finish. It just seems to have a lot of rip then it seems like it is bogging. The season is pretty much over, so it is time for upgrades. Thanks in advance:)
Oh yeah, Tallcracker,
If you are going to get a Pro, look on ebay. A guy is selling a supped up pro for 450. I don't have the exact number, but it looks like a great deal.

Sorry I meant to post... I did call Hot Bodies yesterday, and they were gracious enough to say they would send me a manual/parts list free of charge.... Thank you, HB:D
On the down side the gentlemen in the tech department did not seem too thrilled to try and help without me knowing the part numbers, he seemed like I was bothering him and I still dont know if he gave me the right part #'s so I didnt order it. Maybe you guys could help me??? Here's what i need.....
He told me it was part # C-8118 and called it a servo saver:confused:
I need the aluminum barrel that the spring goes on that is threaded on the bottom... I was always told this was called a bellcrank??? I also need the black screw on the top that holds the purple chassis plate on top of that barrel. he didnt give me a part # for that but said I could get it at my local hardware store, hard for someone with no license at the moment. He did say it was a 4x8mm button head screw....PLEASE HELP !!!! Thanx

10-09-2003, 01:40 PM
It is C8118. It is called a servo saver because thats what the spring and taper on it do. As for screws I would go to http://www.rcscrewz.com/offroad.htm
They make a set for the lightning and it comes with just about every screw!

I am not sure what the temp is when it bogs because it happens during the middle of the race, at the end, it was at about 202. It seems if I do not run it in the 250-280 range, it gets weird. I got one of the 9.5 wings. It seems alot stronger. I think I might race next week because my lhs will be having a special race and might be handing out prizes. I was realy bummed about the wing because I was worked my way up from 10th to 3rd when it happened. Thanks in advance:)

Thank you very much for the clarification on the part #. I did plan to buy a screw kit just not this early, but I might as well since the season is mostly over for me. Good thing is I live only about 30 minutes away from RCScrewz in MI so I can pick them up there and save on shipping. once again thank you.

hey kyosho fan thanks for the tip about the pro on e bay. that is probably where i will end up selling my Nt anyways. i am trying to sell it here on the forums but everyone wants to trade me this and that for my truck instead of paying cash.
if anyone has a friend looking for a great deal on a NT with 2 engines let me know. i am using the cash from that sale to purchase my lightning pro and get into 8th scale again.
i found that the engine ran really well right around 260. this was about as hot as i wanted to let the engine get, i prefered 240, but the difference between those 2 is night and day on the track. use 30% nitro and keep the temps around 250 and the .21 should be able to keep up with most mild racing engines out there.
if anyone sees any real good deals on new lightning pro models in the next couple of weeks please post here and i plan on purchasing right around early to mid november.
thanks guys

wow casey thanks!! that is just too cheap to pass up. i am going to order when i get paid next friday as long as i get something halfway decent for my NT. what an outstanding deal.
when i ordered previously i bought the standard RTR so im not ignorant but i am not as familiar with the pro. i just wanted to know do the Pro tires suck or are they ok? on my old RTR i had problems with the rims cracking and the wing broke the 2nd week i had it. other then that i didnt break a single part in over 3 gallons of gas almost all used on the track. so i was going to buy kyosho rims and proline tires and a 7.5 wing right from the start. just wondering of they had happened to fix the rim problem yet so i could save some $ on the inital get up and go cost.
thanks again for the link. now just send some one to buy my NT, lol

I'm not sure about how the stock wheels hold up, but the tires looked sweet. I sold my stock set of wheels & tires when I first got my Pro because of hearing about other people having problems. I run Kyosho wheels and wings. The Kyosho wheels are tough as nails. The wings do crack and get bent up, but I have yet to actually break a Kyosho wing.

looks like i have a buyer for one of my engines so things are starting to go out the door. i will probably try the stock tires due to the fact my local hobby shop sells the Kyosho rims and proline tires so i can always buy those at the races if i have a problem.
i am thinking i will go right to the kyosho wing, last time the wing literally shattered like glass into a thousand pieces, it was the wierdest thing i had seen in a while. alright thanks again for the help casey, maybe i will get this thing ordered sooner then i thought.

I've been running mine on the stock rims and tires for the last month with no problems yet. I have been running it on a local bmx track so the jumps are something else. I have not broke the wing yet but have to admit I have cringed on some of the landings because the car is so high in the air. But it is all still in one piece. Casey gratz on the year to you! With hunting going into full swing and some painting to do I will be running with you next year for sure:D

How often do you guys rebuild your diffs? I usually (try) to race twice a month, and that is all the running the car gets. I rebuilt the diffs yesterday, removed the grease and put in Silicone. My LHS guy said he rebuild his every 2 months (Mugen).
Other note... Did I miss the easy way to pull the diffs out? on the fr/rear I had to pretty much pull the whole front end off, remove suspension arms and such to get to the diff.
Thanks!

Other than when I put silicone into mine, I have yet to rebuild my diffs...I was racing it pretty much every weekend also :D I will, however, probably rebuild them before the start of the next outdoor season :D
I dont think there is an easier way to remove them...I know the back should come a lot easier than the front - loosen the couple screws in the bottom of the chassis and then a couple other ones...I was able to remove my rear diff without needed to disassemble the entire thing

With Hot Bodies, Big Is In! The new version of the Lightning touring car is 1/7 scale. While 90% of the components come from the Lightning Pro, the longer chassis, bigger wheels, and large body make it a really different vehicle. With an expected street price of around $500, the 1/7 Scale Lightning is geared towards people who want larger scale vehicles but find the huge 1/5 scale vehicles to expensive to purchase and maintain.

Thanks for the info, I figured I might rebuild them after 1 or 2 gallons, unless there is a definite problem. As for getting them out, the main problem I had was the hinge pin brackets bolt to both ends of the diff, in order to remove the rear bracket I had to remove the pins, but the e-clips were on the front side of the diff, and not that easy to get to (until I pulled the motor out). Course I am writing this at work, and not looking that the car, so I could have it all wrong :)

IMO this thread and its version 1 is the MOST packed pieces of info there is on the lightning on the web. on other forums i start wars when i bring up the lightning to someone looking to buy a buggy, the problem is yes a forum/sight deticated to the HB lighting(s) would be great.. but as spoken in all kinds of different posts, HB has done nothing to advertise it much less promote it to gain a reputation of being a quality piece. yes US the owners know you cannot beat it, but in a world full of kyosho, ofna, mugen and GS the lightning some how has a crappy rep of being HB junk which to be honest other HB stuff is... but the lightning is a piece of wonderfull art. so if a "page as described did exist" why not just add the tech tips to this here thread, or beg rc zone for our own place to chat and have a subheading sticky to the "how to" of a lightning.
on savage-central i did start a thread on it a while back.. actually on all the forums i did... this is still the ONLY place that keeps the thread alive.. the differance being on central if i asked the admin to help me with such a idea of thread for the lightning, so such a sticky sub heading could exist it woudl still see no traffic..
so then the next idea would be to compile a bunch of web pages, host it on a ftp server, and just link to such tech tips and articles. BUT then tips from other members would be hard to get onto it quickly/easily like a forum is. i must spend 4 hours a day on central just keeping up with stuff there as is.. so next time is a issue also. central for being 8 months old has over 2400 members now... which in its self is impressive.. but HPI publicizes the savage and its becomming a big name in the monster truck world. with the release of the 25rtr the members viewing and asking questions alone over the past 3 weeks is getting to the point of 100+ viewers at evening hours.
HB needs to take a stake in the lightning, it needs to run a few sponsored drivers to bring the lightning out to the USA people (rember it is also in the land of oz and other places under a different name and winning national races) eyes that it can contend with the other buggies... IMO it would take off and such a forum would then be required.
so i guess we could start off with the basics.. some simple how to web pages on it.. the question is what tips are needed? the buggy is so simple to work on that i can say instructions.. who needs them... but you also have to rember i have a engineering degree (still no job though), and have worked on cars for a good 1/2 of my life.

I was thinking something pretty simple. Not necessarily another forum. This is what I'd like to have on a site:
1) Listing of stock parts and numbers.
2) Listing of what non-Lightning parts fit & work(ex. wing stays, chassis braces, shock towers, diffs, etc., etc.) and their part #s and/or links.
3) Listing and links to known online Lightning parts suppliers.
4) Listing and links to the best deals on Lightning buggies.
5)Parts review section(ex. pipes, engines, tires, etc.)
6) Reader's rides picture area
Numbers 1-5 seem to be the most questioned items on this forum and searching through all the pages can be a pain. One central place with easily accessed information would be cool. And don't forget number 6 - who doesn't like to show off their buggy?

On a slightly different note, my Dad(57 years young) just purchased a new Lightning RR on Ebay. He bought an HPI Nitro MT a couple of months ago, but really wanted an 1/8 buggy. After coming out to the track every week to watch me race(and doing some racing himself), he decided it was time to trade up. I tried talking him into a Pro, but he wanted something RTR. I've got some new spare parts from a Pro that we can throw on there to beef it up.

How about a base setup page? And what changes do you make to correct various handling woes? Maybe a "I think HB did this poorly and here's what I did to improve it" page i.e. I altered the timing on my BB21 and it runs much better, and I could send some pics. I also think the header is 1/2 inch too short, but that's a whole nother wave on a whole nother ocean. BTW www.hblightningpro.com is still open.

hey guys
just thought i would check in. no new lightning yet, but i am hoping all this NT stuff gets wrapped up so i can recirculate this cash. i wanted to ask has anyone run the dirty harry proline tire? what surfaces did it work well on? the proline site says blue groove, but normally blue groove tires are tires that get the most rubber to the ground. what about the knuckles, those seem like a very long lasting tire due to the large surface area of the lugs. i am going to purchase the tires in advance and i am looking for tires good on a med packed/loamy track. some portions are packed but never blue groove.

the way I look at it...it seems Hot Bodies is interested in other things and not the lightning...I have gotten the catalog and have looked at the "new" website. they both suck. It seems like they do not want to promote the Lightning at all. I have a lightning Pro and for the most part I like it. What I do not like is just the lack of caring on the part of Hot Bodies. I have been waiting three months for two rebuild kits that I have paid for but, have not received. As far as I am concerned it may be time to move on to an Ofna, Kyosho, or Mugen. I really like this buggy but enough is enough........I am tired of no parts availability, no customer support, no tech help, and just plain ole not caring on Hot Bodies behalf...to hell with them!!!!

I run the Pro-Line Mugshots. Our track is hard-packed with a lot of loose dirt on top, especially in the tighter corners. The Mugshots work GREAT for me. I tried a set of Knuckles, but they just didn't hook up in the loose stuff. A few weeks ago I modified the Knuckles by cutting out lugs and now they work great, too.

I just checked that Stormer Hobbies (http://stormerhobbies.com) and they have a large selection of parts in stock for the people who has hard time finding parts. To my surprice, they also have parts for the Tornado and Dirtdemon. I ordered from them before and they are really reliable and pretty much they ship your package at the latest the following day.:)

Guess no one is having problems with their HB's :)
I'll be racing in our local clubs "fall fling" this weekend. Big 2-day race, over 100 entries so far. I haven't run my HB since I put silcone in the diffs and changed the shock oil, so I am excited about seeing how it will run. I'll also be running a RC10GT and a T3. Being this is only my 5th race, I don't expect to do very well, but it'll be a blast I am sure.

Replace the diff gears with Savage gears, I'll have to remember that one. I've had zero problems with the diffs, but then again I have only ran the buggy hard 2 races. This weekend it should get a good workout, 3 or 4 qualifying heats and then either a 15min main or a 30min main depending on if I get in the A or not.

Has anyone put metal deck posts on their Lightning? I just would like to because the deck seems to flex when my throttle servo moves. The season is over at my track. I am worried because the track has to move because the landowners want to make a development or something. Has anyone used the MX-3 or the 3PDF-X? I wanted to get a better radio system in the offseason and these are in my pricerange. Which is better? Thanks in advance:)

I've had an MX3 radio system and it's a pretty good system. My biggest complaint about it was the cost of extra rx's and crystal sets. It's not a problem if you don't run multiple vehicles, but the rx's are 2/3rds of the cost of a complete remote. I paid $100 dollars for a tx and rx with one crystal set. To get another rx it was gonna cost me $80 and each crystal set was $25.
Like I said, very good radio, but it depends on whether your gonna want extra's as to whether or not you'll want it.

I have put Kyosho's on mine...They are a little bit longer (like 1mm or something that small) and do make a difference :D You might need to replace the bottom screws once you switch over tray posts - the kit ones are threaded for plastic and you'll need machine screws for the aluminum posts :D

Well, I survived the weekend, but my Lightning is limping. She had a hard weekend! :( On the first day I somehow lost the bushing/spacer that holds the front brake cam in place, so I removed the front brake components and ran with rears only. I ended up qualifying 5th out of 10 in the sportsman 1/8. Come Sunday, it would not keep running at idle. Luckily the maker of Rocket Science Fuel (the fuel I run) was there and he spent a great deal of time trying to get it tuned and running, and we eventually figured out that the clutch was probably hanging up at low idle. I spent most of the 15 minute main on the pit table yanking on the pull start, until it the spring broke, so I clipped off the cord, pulled the pegs off my RC10GT starter box and used that. We even ended up having a little fire in the pits.. ah well... I was able to get it running with about 50 seconds to go and was able to get one more lap in and "finish" the race.

This is just a post to warn you guys of a hobby shop that ripped me off on my Lightning parts order.
I really don't understand this one as i believe a lot of members here race there and it seems like a respectable place.
On the 12th of september i placed an online order at www.lprp.com . This is the Lake paris rc race park. It's order # 100014. On completion of the order, i payed via paypal. I then realized that there where no shipping costs added to the order.
I called Larry (owner of this shop) and he said that he will give me the shipping total in a few days as he didn't have all the parts. On the 19th of september, i called back and he answered right away. He had gone to the post office with all the parts and that shipping would be 14.25$. After we hung up -- i immediately paid another 14.25 for shipping to Canada.
Here we are 2 months later and no parts. I have left 27 messages on the phone since the last week of october. I have also sent approximately 20 e-mails. I have not recieved one single call back nor e-mail.
I know he is open for business as the company message changes every few days stating the opening hrs, race info and practice info.
I have filed a paypal buyer complaint but i seriously do not think i will get my money back as i made the complaint past the 30 day maximum filing date.
As stated, i really don't understand this --- this place seems respectable and i just don't see why this shop does not respond to my messages !!! Very odd.
I hope this does not happen to anyone else.
Thanks for reading.
Charles.

What are my options for removing the pull start on the HB lightning? Last race apparently the recoil broke, and I bought a starter box for it and that is working well. But when the buggy dies, there is a *snap* sound coming from the pull starter. Can I remove the guts and just put the backplate back on? Or is there a replacement backplate for non-pull start?
Thanks
charlesd

You can just empty it and put the casing back on. I put a little silicone around the casing just to keep dirt to a minimum. I haven't had any problems after 2 gallons.

When I had my stock engine, I removed the pull-start and replaced the backplate with the Ofna plate. I believe it was the Hyper backplate, although I'm quite sure the stock engine is the same as Ofna's Force line. I'd check with your LHS to see if there's a difference, but what I got was a direct fit.

I ended up removing the guts of the pull starter and sealed the cover back on and had zero problems racing this weekend. Infact I qualified for the A Main for the first time (9th out of 16) and finished 6th. The buggy was running a bit rich, but I had zero problems with it and it finished the 15 minute main without a problem!

The lightning is an excellent buggy. A few guys at the track have kanai's and mp 7.5's. Buggies that are twice the price of the lightning if not more--- and i'll dare say that the lightning can compare to these buggies very easily.
When i brought my lightning pro, the guys where impressed with the package for the price. There's lots of parts included that are considered hop-ups on other models. I have no problems racing against the kyosho guys. The stock engine is very good also -- not a powerhouse but it gets the job done.
Bodies that fit: Proline crowdpleaser for the mp7.5, kyosho mp 7.5 body. Infact any body made for the mp 7.5 will fit. There are also other kyosho parts that will fit such as diff gears, certain supsension parts, etc... You'll have to browse through the forum here. Best thing to do is to read the entire post -- you'll get a lot of good information.

TIPS FOR FALLING INTO DEALS...
1. Let your LHS owner know you're willing to buy used stuff and leave your phone number with him. When the occasional hard luck case comes in trying to sell his stuff, Mr LHS will think of you first!
2. Check the pawn shops regularly...they don't know the value of r/c stuff...they consider them toys and price accordingly.
3. Keep an eye on eBay...I just bought a Losi XXX-T with Trinity P2K2 Pro motor and new spare tires and wheels for $68! Guy swears it is in good shape. I bought it for my soon-to-be four year old son. I have gotten sick of buying him Tyco junk and having it break/not repairable. At least when he breaks this I can easily fix it...cheaply! Lucky kid, huh!

That's okay, 4 race vehicles is more than enough. I may not have 37 vehicles like some people (ahem LOL), but keeping them in top race form is a lot of work. Especially when they're of such a wide variety of disciplines. If I was smart, I'd just get down to 2 vehicles, 1/8 scale off road, and something for winter.

I have never used a manufactured starter box, but while I wait for the missing parts to show up for my Lightning Pro, can someone who uses one for this or another buggy give me some advice about what to consider in getting a starter box? I need some basic info - are there variations in the way they work, does adding the igniter to the box put a noticeable drain on the current for the motor? Should I get the 1/8 or can I use a 1/10 and 1/8 - any disavantages to that compromise??
I have a 4Tec that uses a purpose built starter box - its really just a mounted motor and wheel - and like not having the cord or the pulling to content with. Thanks for the help!
cbr74
11-21-2003, 10:56 PM
A starter box will either have one large 12V motor or two 540-550 size motors. I prefer the single 12V motor personally.
It will be powered by a 12V gel cell battery or two 6-7 cell sub c battery packs. I prefer the gel cell.
Using a power panel for the glow plug doesn't make a noticeable difference in performance.
With as many R/C's as I have, I use the Ofna narrow 1/8-1/10 box since it can be set-up to start just about anything.
Duster_360

I have been looking at Ofna starter boxes, but had no idea which one would be right for my rcs. They seem to be well designed and their popularity says a lot about their quality. I was thinking about trying to use the box to start my 4 Tec Pro also as well as my Lightning buggy and reduce the associated hardware across my "fleet". Less stuff to drag around and worry with (less to forget, too, lol!!). I'll start looking for an Ofna 10255, which is the narrow, single motor box. Thanks again cbr for your help!

I recently got my lightning pro and I love it. And i use to love the way it sat kinda low to the ground and sleek looking. but my shocks sucked. Well I recently rebuilt my shocks using 60 wt all the way around and the black springs from a 9.5. these springs are about the same rate as the stock lightning springs, and even a little shorter, but now my car sits alot hihger? why? My ground clearance is like 1-1/2" now. I want to know what you guys run for oil and what springs, also what kinda ground clearance do you get? I like the low fast slung look. it dont help win races but.. hey... I dont race yet either, so it dont matter. Thanks for all your help.

I got my hb lightning pro on fri and put a half gallon thru it today. i have 2 questions: is there any trick to keeping the wheel nuts on, they fell off with the wheel about five times and i did have them tight. also i lost a steering part# c8062, any ideas what to replace with thats easily attainable, like something from lhs. i bashed the sh$t out of it and thats all i need for another go around

My guess would be you may have inadvertently pressurized the shocks when you rebuilt them. If the shock shafts "spring" back when you compress them without the springs on then that's the problem. Re-rebuild them following the directions 100%. If that's not it, I do not know.

The slickest fix I've heard is to hard mount it using a piece of wire stuck into the thingy that sticks out of the cover or top. Rotate that part where its at 6:00 and fashion a bracket to stab into that thingy and somewhere on the radio plate. You can shorten the antenna mount screw, and mount the wire on the top of the antenna mount using another short screw. Looks lik ethis should be an easy hop up if HB would get to it - maybe one of these days....
cbr74 elaborated this fix back in the orig thread on this buggy I think. I haven't done mine yet, but I am going to the lhs to get the rod to fabricate it tomorrow. Yeah, I know it makes things crowded down at the radio box latch, but I don't need to be in there that much. Maybe if we ask real nicely, cbr74 will post a pic of his mod??!!

I rebuilt the shocks the way I always do on all my vehicles... drained oil, replaced oil, moved shaft in and out to remove air bubbles, pushed shaft all the way in, then slightly refilled (if necessary). Then replaced the cap, which pushes the shaft out as you tighten it. Is this wrong? Heres some pics of how she looks now:

C8119 are the 'bushings' that go in the castor blocks and look like this Kyosho part:

LXR...manual is vague but shows the shock shaft fully extended when the cap is put on. I think this is the reverse of how you did it, right? you may want to try it with one of the shocks. Do the shocks spring back when you try to push the shaft in (with spring off)?
LosiXXX-NTRacer

Tim:
1) good luck finding that kolor.....it's not faskolor or parma. I have been into airbrushing for a while, and its a kolor that I get at a craft shop about 30 miles from me. I have contacted the maker (based in Troy, MI, the state I live in) where else I couold purchase it but they never really fully responded. It does match perfect tho.
2) yes thats how I built the shocks and yes the shafts spring back out without the spring on..... I build the shocks in all 5 of my cars this way.

If they spring back out then they are pressurized which is not how they should be. They should just dampen, not spring back. I do not know why they are like that but on a hard jump they could blow the caps off(speaking from experience with a Nitro MT).

What do you mean by dampen.... they slowly move out all the way. but when you push down it goes all the way down. and from a drop of about knee length to the floor ( a square drop ) the chassis bottoms out. Maybe I need a stiffer spring?

These type of shocks are designed to have some rebound built in. It's that whole bladder/air pocket thing. Losi shocks don't have that, and are therefore designed to work with no rebound.

Well, have we tried the stock springs again? Those Hong Nor black springs might be stiffer than you think. If it's the springs, and you simply don't like the color, you can dye them with RIT dye (found in the laundry soap department). If switching springs doesn't make a difference, the shocks may not have been properly built from the factory. If you build them with the shafts in, the bladder will try to pull the shaft in when it's extended, which would work towards contracting the springs. Generally, you'll want to run your ride height somewhere between arms level and drive shafts level. On that note, too much ride height will make it hook when entering a corner, and push when exiting. Let alone the fact it will be more susceptible to traction rolling. On the opposite side, too low will make it seem pushy going in, hook coming out, and slide sideways rather than grab when cornering. There's a link to "buggy setup guide" on the "setup" page of my website:

It was a fairly simple modification. Once I got the angle I wanted, I drilled one new hole in each bracket and bolted 'em up.

Not sure about the pre-painted ones, but I know the clear ones for the MBX Pro won't fit without severe butchering. I had a Pro-Line ordered at my LHS, but it didn't come in. So they tried to sell me that slow Ofna garbage for my Lightning. Bah! It probably woulda made me go slower if it HAD fit!
Besides, those things are kinda fugly.. I'd rather run a plain black body that that checkerboard/flame junk... Look on Ebay, you can find painted buggy bodies for ~$30 or so, and then you won't look quite so cookie cutter as with the Ofna stuff..
On a materials note, the Ofna bodies felt very thin. I don't know how durable they are, but I'm betting they wouldn't last long. I know at my track, lot's of Ofnas run around with no nose most of the time. I'm not a big fan of the stock Lightning body either, again very brittle stuff. Proline is by FAR the best thing going.
Here, I did a quick search and found:

Driving is driving, you still gotta make em get around the turns regardless of the power source. Give the electric that holds the track record to the guy still breaking knuckles on his Lightning and I betcha he will still manage to wreck it..
They win on my track, so I'm going over to the dark side. Too bad no one makes an electric 1/8 scale, that would be perfect for me.

But it's easier to be consistent with an electric, at least it is for me. Anywho I'm sure you'll be back faster than you can say "electric's boring" :D
Electric 1/8? How about an E-Maxx, brushless powerplant, with an aftermarket low CG chassis, and the OFNA adapters that allow you to use 1/8 wheels/tires? For that matter, why not a Losi XXX4?

hello all,
I have to say for the last year i have been fallowing the two lightning threads and have got some good ideas from everyone.
Just to let you all know i got my son ( then 12 ) a lightning rr for x-mas LAST year. It is now been updated to a pro and has an OS RG in it. My son started racing it at CRCRC in Columbus Oh and has 2 B main wins, a 2nd, 3rd and a 4 th.
he is now 13 and is chomping at the bit to race more. This buggy rocks, and has for the past year. CRCRC is where all the Big Boys play and if you win here, that is saying something. Thanks again for all the good ideas

The Lightning Pro is my first buggy and I've bought a set of Hyper wheels (the drive hexes are a ton beefier) and a set of tires that are similar to what the Pro comes with. I've got a Tmaxx and know the 1/10 wheels are supposed to be vented to prevent them from bouncing on the air trapped in the tire.
I noticed after looking at the pros original tires, each tire has a small hole cut in the tire somewhere between the lugs on the treadface. Is this what I am supposed to do to vent my new ones? I don't like the idea of cutting a hole in the tire - how about 1 or 2 small holes in the rim? Or do you worry with this at all with a 1/8?
These tires came with a 1 piece inner foam liner and a long pice of what appears to be dbl stick tape - whats that for? There was no info on the box or their website and my lhs guys are all airplane folks and really are not much help. Thanks for the help!!

Ugh, I hear ya! Right now our streets are ice covered and were supposed to get snow on that!
Duster_360
Some peeps like the holes in the rim, others prefer it in the tire. The claimed advantage of tire holes is that it allows water and dirt to escape the tire, whereas rim holes can allow dirt and water in, but there's no means of escape, resulting in an off balance tire. As far as the double sided tape, some inserts need to have their ends attached together, while other inserts already come in the doughnut shape. If your inserts are long flat peices of foam (i.e. I think Panther inserts are that way), you'll want to double side tape the ends together. Otherwise the insert can bunch up in one side of the wheel, again resulting in an unbalanced tire. If you can swing it, just get some Pro-Line inserts. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNX12&P=0

That's awesome! w00t!:D
Duster_360
12-03-2003, 09:42 AM
Thanks for explaining the holes in the tires versus rims business. Looks like I will be duplicating the holes in the tires like the pro came with originally.
These are TRC tires and the inserts are already doughnuts that have been nicely trimmed diagonally on the inside edge to provide clearance at the bead. Thats why I was wondering what the dbl stick tape was for - its not to put the liner together. I'm guessing its to stick inside the tire to keep the liner in place, but since its a one piece doughnut, short of tearing, how can they bunch up or shift around to unbalance the wheel? Do these liners tear up just running the buggy?

I wanted to get a set for the Lightning but they don't have a set for it. I am in the process of getting them to put a set together for the buggy and they're great people to deal with but they might be more motivated if there is interest shown. The "news" page on their web site tells the story that sold me on them after trying titanium screws. Tim,
I just checked out that screw site..... looks good. I just replaced my screws with rcskrewz last week. Nice stuff, but I must say I agree with the buttonhead theory as I had a couple of them strip installing them. Did you ever consider the Kyosho set? all the screws in that kit are metric just like the Lightning, and the lightning is a twin of the kyosho? You never know, it might work?

12-03-2003, 09:39 PM
I tried the Jump Start/ Roto Start out back when I had my lightning... Absolutely TERRIBLE product.. Within 2 weeks, it had not only stripped its own gears TWICE, it had also thuroughly trashed my one-way bearing. Do yerself a favor, invest in a bump box and be done with it. You will regret buying that thing!
Jeff, at the end of our season, there were a few electric guys starting to come in. One guy was running a T3 and he won for like 3 weeks in a row. Another guy, who was running either a T3 or a Losi, I didn't pay much attention to those electric geeks at the time, set our track record. That's an OVERALL track record, for 1/10 and 1/8 scale. I ran electric at the beginning of the season actually, a severely under-tweaked Duratrax Evader. I kinda wanna run this Losi to avenge the memory of that little green electric truck they laughed at.. I'm half tempted to paint a body in the exact scheme the Evader RTR comes in... Let them laugh as I beat em this time ;)
Oh and the XXX-4, I was told that it didn't fit the 1/10 scale rule of no 4wd, but I COULD run it with the 1/8 scale 4wd buggies if I was so inclined... I wasn't hehehe It might be faster, more nimble, but it darn sure wouldn't survive the crashes..

I've seen it happen more than once, with any kind of foam lined tire. I run foams, but back when I did run rubber tires, I always just glued the insert foam to the rim, then trimmed it, then installed the tires over it. To give an idea what CAN happen, a guy went upside down during a race once, and he floored it like a doof to get the marshall's attention... Well, something flew off his car and into the crowd. We later found out, his liner had ripped out when this tire went vertical (you know, the way rubber tires flatten when you hold it off the ground and gas it...)

Hey guys. I haven't posted in forever since we've been done racing for almost 2 months. I just finished up my new bodies for next year. They're pretty plain, but will be very easily identifiable as mine. I used Pactra Flo Green and black reflective decal. During the racing season, the last race of the night is almost always in the dark and the lighting setup could be better. Bright bodies and reflective anything really help keep track of the buggies.

Anyone know the size of the clutch bears for the HB.21 stock motor? In the manual it is listed as a 5x10 bearing, but I can't find a 5x10 bearing on the parts list, only 5x8.
cbr74
12-07-2003, 06:18 PM
They are 5X10, the 5X8's on the parts list are flanged bearings for the brake cams.

theres finally a place about an hour from me that races indoor nitro offroad...I was wondering, I know my buggy is fast with the HB engine but how will it fair if I race against a VZB or equivalent engine? should I upgrade my engine? I cant really afford a VSB or anything that richy. I was considering a hyper 8 port? Is this a good engine for racing. Someone help me. I dont plan to go pro, but wouold like to be competitive. - Thanks
BTW... nice looking cars Casey

The stock engine is reliable, but it's not going to keep up with a VZB given equivalent driver skill.
On a budget, the 8 port is about your best bet depending on your track. The 8 port likes to rev and works well when it can stretch its legs. On tighter tracks, I'd go with a Picco Sport. It makes more torque on the low end for better pull out of the corners.
Most important though... is practice, practice, practice. Any buggy and any engine can be competitive if you know how to drive it.

I understand about the practice but heres the key....I have been into nitro r/cs for about 5 yrs now, I have a Savage, XXXNT, my HBLP, XXXS G+, Maxx 2.5. etc. now I am no pro nor am I rich, but my friend who doesnt have kids or a family just bought a MBX 5 and he plans to get a VZB, and we plan to race together at this track. I just want to be competittive against him and the others, but I dont have the 280 to drop on an engine. He talks alot of crap cuz his mugen is supposed to be "better" than my HBLP. but I think I will kill him cuz he hasnt never ran nitro except a couple of my cars. hes been out of r/c for about 10 years, I just want to put him to shame all the time and end the mugen vs HB war we have going on ... LOL. But thanx CBR, I will prolly get the hyper 8.

If you port the stock Lightning header, the stock exhaust works very well on an 8 port. I run this set-up in my Dominator. Just get a J-coupler so the pipe doesn't pop loose on you.

by porting do you mean increase the inlet hole on the manifold?
cbr74

Yes. Where the header pipe meets the flange. It improves exhaust flow.

I was just at team orion's web and I noticed this interesting story which is the following:
"Team Orion is happy to announce that pro racer and 2003 ROAR Off-Road National Champion Travis Amezcua has signed with Team Orion for the 2004 and 2005 racing seasons. Amezcua will compete primarily in off-road nitro and electric events with some on-road events thrown in for flavor.
Travis, formerly a Team Orion nitro driver, will once again power his Team Losi XXX-NT nitro truck with WASP .12 small blocks and Black Demon fuel. The newly developed and soon to be released WASP .21 will power his highly competitive Hot Bodies 1/8 scale buggy".
You see guys, it about time that people are starting to notice that HB lightning is a competetive buggy... almost bullet proof and of course easy on your wallet with replacement parts. :D
I am still can't belive as well that Hot Boddies dosen't have a particular section in this forum.

Well...
I busted out the ol' calipers and measured the ID of both the exhaust port on the HBLP BB21 and the manifold, and they are identical. I don't see how this would help. Now the manifold is on the short side though. Try leaving up to a 20mm gap between the pipe and the manifold if you want your engine to get on the pipe sooner. That matches the OS exhaust length almost to a 'T'. And yeah, you'll need to dremel the rock guard in order to move the pipe forward.

I didn't say it needed to be port matched, just ported. Check the ID on an 086 or similar, you'll find it over 1mm larger than the stock Lightning header.
Jeff Cain
12-12-2003, 08:05 AM
If you're going from a smaller ID to a larger ID then you'd need to port the exhaust port. You'd only need to port the maifold if you're going from a larger ID to a smaller ID.

I just want to know why this buggy isn't getting more ink? It's obvious the Lightning is proving it's worth. Even XTM is getting more reviews with its buggies. Hot Bodies really needs to do some more PR and offer more support. I'd love to see some serious third party parts come around.

I have also been playing with the idea of selling my buggy, if anyone is interested let me also know..... thanks.... I bought the same color in Tamaiya spray paint...it's new apparently. BUT I am curious how much you would want for it all. I have two buggies and only bought one new body so far.
