View Full Version : ROAR related body painting, modifying questions

Got some ROAR related questions (I'm refering to serpent's Mclaren body):
"all bodies must have a clear windshield, and side and rear windows must be clear or cut out unless otherwise stated in class rules or specifications."
"Bodies used in ROAR competition must resemble bodies used in full scale racing for the type of event being conducted."
These two rules are conflicting.... the back of the standard mclaren has a section going down the block (meaning that part of the rear window is not clear) see:
http://www.barchetta.cc/all.ferraris/images/0179/1995-mclaren-5.jpg
http://www.angelfire.com/wa2/extremesupercarz/mclaren/full12.jpg
and as you can see in the slot car replica, http://www.monarchlines.co.uk/public_html/TopSlot/Dscn8663red.jpg, some don't even have a rear window... so whats the deal?!?
Also "Openings in the body other than those appropriate to full-size
car openings such as grill, scoops, air vents, etc., will be kept to a minimum."
How much can I open the body up? How much can I modify the body? Can I actually clip the old style air scoop out and mold in the new scoop design? which looks like: http://www.calstatela.edu/student/obrenes/dreammachines/mclaren/f1/ml5.jpg
This would be in compliance with "Bodies used in ROAR competition must resemble bodies used in full scale racing" right?
Also if how about light buckets? Is that allowed?
Whats your opinion?
I might just end up making this that show body I was looking for... but I was hoping to try and keep it Roar compliant....

Unfortunately your answer is very simple. You cant use the Mclaren body at all.
"Bodies used in ROAR competition must resemble bodies used in full scale racing for the type of event being conducted."
This sentence referes to full scale touring cars. ROAR seems to have this idea that only 4 door cars compete (silvia? M3??) and as a result all ROAR bodies must have 4 doors. If you go to their website (roarracing.com or some variation of that) you will find a list of bodies that you may use and the manufacturer of that body.

When the touring car rules were written years ago, most TCs were 4-door sedans. I do like the idea of controlling the bodies, to prevent people from having to try too many different types to get one that handles well for them. Plus, and this is my personal opinion, I prefer seeing cars of the same body style together: Seeing LeMans cars, GTs, coupes, sports cars, and touring cars on one track just looks goofy to me, and I'd prefer an ordered class.

Fist off the McLaren F1 car doesn't fall under the touring car category even in full scale racing. It falls under GT1. I believe ROARs TC class was more modeled after DTM but am not positive.
What I find entertaining is the part that says the body must look like the full scale version...have you seen some of the pan car bodies they've approved over the years? Most of the current GTP and GT1 bodies look NOTHING like their full sized counterparts.

ROAR has two classes for 4wd on road. T1 for FIA GT's and 2 door coupes, and T2 for 4 door sedan bodies. T1 rules are rarely ever used. T2 rules are more popular.

Umm, I'm talking about an MRX3, and the body I'm using IS roar approved:
1/8 GT-1 SERPENT MCLAREN GTR GT-1 1751 12-31-2005

anyhow, before u go OT on me, does anyone have an answer to my questions regarding modding the body?
Lets see an actuall picture of 1:1 stratus racing in a touring car championship. I can't seem to find them.

well, i feel like an idiot. anyway...
Dont worry about the split rear window, you must leave everything that is a window on the real car clear.
You cant open up the body more than a 2" diameter (2" diaganal, if square) hole in the windshield. You can cut out the side windows, and various holes for the glow starter and carb adjustments. Other than that you shouldnt have any holes except grills etc.
My guess would be that you cant modify the body, but wait for someone else to confirm that.
Light buckets are fine because they do not alter the aerodynamics of the car.

Thanks for the reply mab_man20. I know they allow different hole schemes in 1/8 so I know that the 2" di in the window doesn't apply really... Like forexample 60% of the rear window and trunk area are removed for my engine and INS air filter.
The body I'm working on was originally for scale looks rather than roar racing... so I'm trying to make it look purdy. Just trying to keep it as much roar legal as I can....

Ah...that would be because 1/8th is not a touring car class. In 1/8th they allow can am, GTP, and GT1 style bodies.
As far as the rules go...the center section is not part of the rear window so would not fall under the rule reqiring it to be clear.
