Hi all! This is my first post in the planes bb, so I guess you could say I am new. I have been into R/C Cars about 6-7 years, and found these boards about 2-3 years ago. I Own a FT TC3, and an XXX KE, for those of you whom care.

I actually have a real question. I have a friend who owns, like boats, trucks, planes out the butt, and a helicopter. This heli of his, the LMH model 116, has attracted my attention. I love it!!! He got it flying after some tune up, and did a bank turn, only ot fly into a tree, right through the tree, and into the side of his house! Well, I got the bug, thanks to him! I now want a helicopter sooo bad! I would give up my FT TC3, so I could purchase one. Anywhos, Iwas wondering which would be better for me? I am also new to nitro, so bear with me. I was thinking the model 116, with that .30 motor, or the raptor, with the .30. I dunno which is better. I want a lasting, easy to fly kinda bird. Anyone got ideas, or better criteria I should be thinking with? Oh, if you have pics or info...that would help. Also, what all will i need to purchase? any kit include that stuff that i'd need? thanks...

Oh, and what is the cheapest I could spend, and then what do you recommend? I forgot to ask that..

I have been looking into this all day long! I have no life! I think the choices are narrowed down to a raptor 30 v2, a raptor 50 v2, or the LMH Model 116. Someone please help me? How well will these wood blades on teh raptors hold up, if i hit the ground, or say..teh side of a house? Can I change them to the more flexible ones, like on the LMH? And, how well designed are both? Please help me..

Shoot, I got another question..I know the LMH is a fp chopper, but is the raptor? If so, then how much more difficult will it be to fly?

I just got into the Helihobby myself, and like you own cars out the butt. There's a guy I've been talking with for about three years now about helis and what not. By the way, the LMH heli doesn' t have a .30 engine in it. I personally went with the Raptor 30V2. It's a beutiful bird. Definatly go with the kit. I had no prior heli experience and was able to build it without a problem. It definatly helps too because you know what goes where, how it connects and what it does. I decieded on this because of a guy I've been talking to about heli's for the last 3 years (Me = poor), who recommended that to me along with the following gear
1.)Futaba 9C Radio
2.)JR 8103 Radio
3.)Futaba GY204 Gyro (I think it's 4 anyway)
4.)Futaba GY401 gyro(with the special digital servo)
5.)OS .32 engine

They are more expensive but also what the big guru's swear by. Definatly recommend this bird, it's insane!!!

Lol, yeah, after about an hour of that post, I was deciding either 50v2, or 30 v2! I am going with a 30v2, in kit form. I loe putting things together ,mainly for that reason. It iwll include the tt-.39h motor, and muffler. I will get the field kit, including a 3 liter tank, with electric pump, 12 starter, batt, glow plug igniter, and whatnot. I am gonna get the airtronics rd8000 radio, and a futaba gy-401 gyro with the 9253 servo. Any hints or tips on setup, or what to to, to get the best build possible? Thanks..

check out www.heliproz.com
They have a video on assembling the raptor. It's a few extra bucks but it's definatly worth it. They go over anything you'll need to know

A nexus is definatly not the way to go. You can't go anywhere with the bird. You will out grow it very quickly. It has no where near the 30D capability of the other birds mentioned. A shuttle Plus is okay, but more expensive and less of a performer than the Rappy

Ok, I LOVE The raptor, but today I took the LMH off of my friend's hands for a while. It seems he has stripped a few gears in the aileron micro servo that I need to replace, since he doesn't know what to do. He said that he would cover the parts, and drop the price to $280! Including all the electronics and stuff. I jsut wanna know..would this be worth the purchase? I LOVE the rappy, and it's sturdiness..IT looks super solid, but yeah. U gotta help me out. The rappy will cost a lot more, but I would like it more. At the same time, this model 117 is sumthin I dunno if I should pass up..someone..HELP ME!! MY favorite..Rappy, or LMH??

I would stick with the Rappy. It'll take you much farther. Going from a fixed pitch bird to a CP bird (when you're ready to move it) is like learing to fly again. Just get the rappy and be patient. It'll be WELL worth the wait. TRUST ME. I went through the same thing. It was either a Rappy or a Hummingbird. Everybody told me to go wtih the Rappy.

I want to get into helicopters also and was looking around. This thread led me to ask my LHS about the raptor 30. they said its a great heli but parts are hard to get for it. they recommended the lite machines 120 as i said i wanted to begin with. he said if i wanted to get a 30 size heli to start go with the kyosho caliber because its parts are readily available and it kicks the rappy's butt. hes been flying for over 10 years, so in the long run, im gonna buy a 120 Lite machine, one more just joined the hobbby. figured i spent so much on cars, why buy another car when i can try a new challenge, helis....

I say the JR Venture 30 CP (http://horizon.hobbyshopnow.com/products/description.asp?prod=JRP9005)is the best heli around. Street price is $259-$269. And the parts are CHEAP(the good kind of cheap)!!!! And did I mention that it is an ARF!!! Just stick the tail boom in and apply decals. Assembly takes 30 minutes.....FOR A BEGINNER ! Add a motor (I recommend the O.S. .32 SX-H http://www.osengines.com/engines/osmg1940.html), radio (I recommend the JR 662 radio http://horizon.hobbyshopnow.com/products/description.asp?prod=JRP6822**) and gyro (required... I recommend the JR 410T http://horizon.hobbyshopnow.com/products/description.asp?prod=JRPG410T). All-in-all it should run you about $802.00. That might sound expensive but in heli talk, that's kinda cheap. This thing is stupid simple to build, its easy to fly, and will take you from learning to 3-D areobatic flight! E-mail (nstampede002@yahoo.com) me if you would like more pictures or more info about this awsome machine. Also if ya wanna go bigger, the JR Venture 50 CP just came out. It will run you about $350.00. Bye

wats the hirobo shuttle plus 30 kit like? wat does it include? is it good for $209? keep in mind im skint and have to werk to the smallest possible budget ever. any others suitable for a beginer on a tight budget?

The shuttle plus is nicely priced and is an excellent heli. It comes with rotor blades, muffler, and a heavy-duty swashplate. And $209.00 is a good price, but hirobo parts are EXPENSIVE! Example, tail rotor control system for my JR Venture, $25-30. Hirobo tail control system, $50-60. I still recommend the venture above all. The Plus still requires radio, engine, gyro, servos, and all field equipment. And don't be fooled by these smaller helis (lite machines, Ikarus Piccolo, and other mini helis are twichy and sometimes hard to fly. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at nstampede002@yahoo.com - bye

Prices..... (all helis have no motors)
Thunder Tiger Raptor 30 V2 ARF $384.00
Hirobo Shuttle Plus kit (30 class) $210.00
JR Venture 30 CP ARF $269.00
Kyosho Caliber 30 ARF $299.00
Kyosho Nexus 30S ARF WITH engine $319.00

Nexus is nice, but they are cheap, you will get bored with it quickly, and they get out of adjustment easily. bye

guys cna i ask u a favour can u put together a very cheap combo for me all the stuff a beginer will need (minus stuff i have like glow plugs and plow starter) cna u start them off wif drills? and can u use a 4 channel radio and use a y lead to attach the pitch and throttle servos?

Century hawk sport is a very good heli - it's also the cheapest 30 size. $159.

jrventurekid
11-12-2003, 07:22 PM
You can start them with a drill, however I do recommend using an airplane starter because drills can't spin over motors as fast as an airplane starter can. No, you can't use a "Y" lead extension to connect to the throttle and pitch servos. And sorry, but a 4 channel radio won't work. Well, actually it depends on the heli, so yes and no about the 4 channel radio. And for the combo......(This is the cheapest stuff I can find. This is also the most BASIC equipment. I work at a hobby shop, so equipment isn't very hard to find).

#1. Radio......JR 662 w/ 5 537 servos, switch harness, 12" servo lead extension, 1000 mah receiver battery, R700 receiver, and all mounting hardware plus extra servo arms. Part #JRP6822
$269.99

#2. Engine...... O.S. .32 SX-H. High power output, EXCELLENT QUALITY!!!, runs smooth and easy, starts easy, and comes with 1 extra throttle arm. Part #OSMG1940
$129.99

Gyro...... (I know this is expensive, but it is REQUIRED). JR 410T. Easy to maintain and operate, simple design, easy to setup, tail lock option, and cheaper than most gyros. Part #JRPG410T
$129.99

Next, I need to know what kind of heli you are looking into. That will decide the final price. And how much money are you looking to spend? Bye.

One other thing- I do recommend you find an radio control simulator. Because these things are hard to fly. I have the Great Planes Realflight G2 R/C Simulator. Its a little expensive at $220.00, but it comes with the software and r/c controller. And I quickly got my money back out of it after my first crash. But you can find some r/c simulators for as low as $20.00. My entire setup (heli, radio, gyro, motor, W.S. Deans antenna, header tank, muffler, servos, starting and field equipment, and simulator cost me $900.00. Trust me, you will love flying helis when you learn how to fly them. And last.....how much land do you live on because when you learn, you will need a lot of space! Good luck bidding and safe flying! Bye.
