Welcome everyone to the Ninth Best Paint Competition!!
The best paint competition will be open for entrees for two weeks and will close at 12:00 AM October 15 at midnight.
Restrictions: Halloween!! (all bodies must have a halloween theme. If its not obvious please explain why its halloween)
In the following two weeks (October 16 to October 30) we will hold the ninth Street/Race Competition. Each month we will hold a Best Paint and Street/Race competition. If you can’t get your bodies done this month, don’t worry there will be plenty more to come!!
The winning bodies may appear in Radio Control Car Action or R/C Nitro!!
RULES for Best Paint:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters are welcome!)
5) Please refrain from insulting bodies in anyway.
6) Must fall within this month's restrictions (Restrictions: Halloween themes)
7) Only 2 entrees per person.
8) Bodies should be painted within the last 4 months.
Each submission must include the following:
Body manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Inspiration (could be another paint job).
And of course, a body.
This month Ghost Graphix will be judging the Best paint competition.
Each body will be judged by the following criteria (1-bad, 10-excellent):
Difficulty (score 1-10)
Over all design (score 1-10)
Execution (score 1-10)
The photo and background will not be judged. All that is needed is a clean photo that clearly shows the body.
Each month we will place some restriction on all entrees.
November restrictions:

The first step in posting pictures is to hit the caps botton so your little light goes off (i dont mean to be mean, but its annoying to read all caps).
Now there are two ways to post pictures:
Is your picture posted somewhere on the web? If not skip down
1) If its posted somewhere click the button that reads IMG at the top of the posting box (its directly below the "size" box).
2) right click on your picture, click properties, and then copy the URL of the picture.
3) Paste the URL in the window that popped up when you clicked on the IMG.
4) Hit ok.
If your picture is on your hard drive:
1) Look below the posting box. It says Options, and Attach file. Click on the browse next to the Attach file.
2) Find the location of your picture and hit attach.
3) Your done!
Note: Pictures must be less than 600x600 and less than 61,000 bytes when uploading from your hard drive. If you dont have access to a photo editor email me at mab_man20@hotmail.com and Ill shrink them for you.

Well I'm going to have to give my not so humble opinion on the contest results. Everyone did do a good job but I have to say "pumpkinfish" was ROBBED! :)
I just can't seem to understand how "KMac" score for difficulty was a 9 and "pumpkinfish" got a score of 8.....I just can't seem to make any sence out of that:confused:
I'm not ripping on "KMac"....it is a very nice paintjob and congrates for winning but I've just gotta give props for all the color transitions and the amount of custom templates that must have went into "pumpkinfish's" phat ride....plus I'm always a fan of schemes that don't look anything like a decal. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now:D

Guys calm down. I am flattered that some of the pm's I received and jedi posted that I was ripped off. I was an art major when I first entered college and I am used to being critiqued. One professor would love what you did while another would rip you a newone. I obviously did not appeal to the judge who has the final say.
I don't paint to show off or make money. I do it to let out my creative juices since I am not working in an art related field as a profession. That being said, I tend to design my schemes as "anything goes" and I really don't look to copy someone's style or paint schemes. As I posted, this is my personal ride and it just happened to fit the contest so I entered it. The only opinion that mattered was the look on my girlfriend's face when I finally showed it to her. I kept it hidden becuase I knew she would flip when she saw it, especially how the sun reflects off the glitter. That was all the recognition I needed.
Congrats to kmac as his scheme was clean and visually stunning. Good contrasting colors.
malibu4bbl, I would never have had the patience to do that kind of mask job. Whether it was a store bought mask set or cut by hand, I know how time consuming it can be to apply a mask like that. I felt it taking off all the leaves on mine!
To me, everyone who entered is a winner because we had the cahonies to paint a halloween themed car which is obviously hard...just look at the number of entries this round. ;)

Just for the record, I wanted to make it clear I don't have any real beef with the judging or any particular painter....But I myself make my living as an artist and never hesitate to give my opinion and complements on things I observe. Having a tough skin to opinions like "pumpkinfish" mentioned is required when you go to art school but perhaps some people are more sensitive to this things....so if I did ruffle any tailfeathers it was unintentional...and if so for the LOVE OF GOD loosen up

Having judged a competition before and having tried to set up a system in which the judge's personal taste would interfere as little as possible Im going to put in my $.02. Im glad that pumpinfish does not feel robbed, and that he paints for the same reason I do, to create something truly unique and amazing.
You will notice that both bodies were cut by hand, you will notice both bodies have excellent fading, and both have complex designs. I however agree that Kmac deserved the win for a few reasons. It is easier to cut random leaves (mind you, its still very time consuming) then to plot out and cut a symetrical tribal pattern. The neon yellow window trim seems very out of place with the fall colors. Kmac's use of graphite and the continuation of it up onto the wing adds an extra dimension to the body. These points are nit-picky, but when you have bodies such as these, every little detail comes under intense scrutiny.
I know people are still going to disagree with me, but i want the point of this post to be clear. This competition isnt about winning, its about displaying your work for everyone to see, to inspire beginners, and to challange painters to come up with something new.

Mab, the problem with photographing my body was twofold:
1) The blue glitter is hard to capture on film to look like it does in person, especially in the sun.
2) Fluorescent colors are difficult also. All the leaves are a mix of fluorescent yellow, fluorescent orange and red. In person, it looks great, but I could not get the colors to appear on film without editing it in Photoshop someway.
How do you suggest photographing fluorescent colors to look "proper"?
P.S. I knew I should have put on my dirty yellow race rims and left the clean white one off...lol ;)

I think that pumpkinsfishs was awsome. it was the most unique thing ive seen in a realyl long time. Im not kncoking anyone at all i think they all rock and are alot better then anythign ive done. I do it for the fun of it.
But i think that closeness to teh theme should have been a factor too. With pumpkinfish you think holloween or fall or thanksgiving in a second.
With kmacs which is very nice it kinda doesnt brign the thought of holloween right to you.
Once agian i am not knocking or bashing anythign or anyone. I think that they are all excellent and the juding is the way it is.
A couple of thoughts on juding:
What baotu having 3 judges and taking the average of al l3 to make the winner?
Waht baotu setting up a poll?? let the members decided al lteh member not jsut 1.
just my 2 cents.
Still cant wait for next month maybe ill do better
BTW The mask was cut by hand. took me about 5 hours to get it the way i wanted. took about 1 hour to take off.

in my defence i judge difficulty on what would be difficult for me or the average painter to do pumkinfishes paint scheme is very good but it would be easier do do than kmac's.kmacs scheme is very clean and very detailed just look at how the bottom edge is done were he carried the graphic into the trim and onto the wing with the graphite like i said it is detailed and clean. All the paint jobs looked realy good and it was hard to judge it was not about whos i liked better because i liked them all just my .02 cents don't hate me please

I think in the future, we need to have a rule stating no arguing with the judges decisions (unless they are colossally stupid, which ghosts clearly wasn't). It was well thought out and well described. This kind of petty bickering is what ruins competitions.
malibu4bbl
10-24-2003, 07:33 AM
I was no arguing with the jdging i think its very tought o judge and you cant please everyone.
I agree with the juding. i dont think anyone was bashing it everyone was jsut putting in there 2 cents.
No comp is ever going to make everyone happy. just look at american idol and the clay akin thing.
I do not hate anyone i cant speak for everyone. I love paint comps and this is the only board that has them really. The other one i entered there was onyl 1 other entry.
How do you get picked to judge a paint comp??
Thank you Ghost for the judging! You did great
