Looks nice but...are the words supposed to be backwards?

AceCoolie

I'm wondering the same thing. I thought the picture was reversed but you can seen the writing on the box is normal.

microrcdude

Yeah they are

micrors4racer
11-01-2003, 12:08 PM
so why are they backwards?

matkg
11-01-2003, 03:50 PM
I think it's a japanese tuner thing. They are supposed to be like a reflection of the other side. So left side decals are correct, the right side's a mirror of it, or something like that. You might notice it from all the popular japanese tuned cars like the one's by JUN, Top Secret, Apexi, etc...

Yes they are supposed to be backwards.

In this picture you can see that the RE Amemiya and GReddy decals on the side are backwards also.

Ok. So it's not a mistake or photoshop. Why in the world would real race cars have backwards decals?!?

Just ignore it and go back to watching the boring old-folk, left-turn-only, crash every 5 minutes NASCAR.

Well, isn't the point of sponsoring a car to have people see your name? If it's backwards, they can't read it. Also, it's not just like the major Apex logo is backwards, they all are. I'd be willing to bet that if you saw this car running around a track, you wouldn't be able to make out many of the sponsors before it's out of site.

On the other hand, maybe the figure people will look at it longer trying to figure out what it says. I guess it's some advertising trick. I wonder if it works?

If I am not mistaken Japanese read right to left. So to them the other side of the car is backwards! :D

Macdaddy4738
11-03-2003, 09:49 PM
thats not right to left though...the words are a mirrior image of the other side..

I thought Japanese was read top to bottom......

I think they do it so they don't have to alter their logo. Look at this S15. If they wanted to spell it the correct way, it obviously wouldn't look like their real logo. The C, facing the other way, compliments the body lines, and goes with the black stripe. IF they were to switch it around, there would be a huge T instead of the C, trying to blend in with the stripe. By making a mirror of it, they keep the original logo.

Macdaddy4738

i think you are exactly correct there

that makes total sense!

While you make a good point, I would think the advertisers would place the highest priority on a clearly readable logo over design. If it were my car, I'd insist that the designer come up with a different scheme that wouldn't impact readability.

I'm not trying to argue. I just find this interesting. I follow lots of different motorsports and up till this thread and the pictures in it, I've never seen this before. I wonder if it's going to catch on more or if it's been tried in the past and found to be ineffective.

99% of advertising is from pictures of the car sitting still, and this thread is proof enough that we are all perfectly capable of reading the sponsors.

Here's the noodle scratcher: Why are there so many pictures of the "backwards" side?

turbo s15

thats just how the japanese motorsports is.

and it makes all then sense.

As a illustrator and professional graphic designer. Tell me that when you see a McDonald's logo you read the word "McDonald's" to understand your going to McDonald's. Because if you do you different from 99% of the public. When you see a McDonald's logo you don't have to be able to read it to know its a Mc D's Look at the "mirrored" logo and tell me that you don't know what it says. Its a icon not a text book or magazine.

Whoa whoa whoa

the body came with those decals? what kind of body is that?

by the way, the logos are backwards because its a drifting thing. they do it because i guess they think it looks better and they are judged on how the car looks as well as how they do in competition.

NoRotorLS1
11-04-2003, 09:20 PM
That C-West silvia isn't a drifter. It competes in GT300 JGTC, where they aren't "judged on how the car looks."

Macdaddy4738
11-04-2003, 09:23 PM
i think they do it to insight arguments so that people will know their name..

Exactly. With that in mind, all they need to do is make the logo blend in without altering it, and in this case they just flip it around. Here's the other side of that s15.

Thats not really apples to apples. Everyone knows McDonalds. I've never head of Apex, C-West, or some of the other sponsors. I've never seen their logos. This is the first time many people will be exposed to them and their backwards. While I agree that a well known logo such a Mc D's, Pepsi, Ford, Chevy, etc would be just as identifiable backwards, some of the smaller compaines aren't.

Also, you might not recognize the Mc D's logo if the arches weren't there and it was just backwards text.

Going back to the original picture, there are lots of smaller company names in text that are backwards. Not just logos.

I was wondering about that too. On the A'pex FD even the smaller ones are backwards. On the C-West S15, the smaller ones are going the correct way. Argh someone should give them a call or something.

this is true AceCoolie but your talking about race events in japan that are advertising to that area they would be familiar with those logos there not advertising to americans or europeans. Back all the way to the start they logos are integrated into the design to much to flip around the readable way IMO.
