Started on the engine swap today. For some reason, not in a rush and want to enjoy this project. As long as its done before Spring.

Getting the new mount ready. -------97TRAKIN', you see something here?;)

Picked up the Purple People Eater mounts from SpeedWorld. Good looking stuff.

-- Problem, they are designed to use without a clutch. I'd like to keep mine so its going to need shimming with a few washers under the bottom two screws for the clutch to engine.

-- Problem, The shaft log is bent at too high of an angle and doesn't allow the new mount to even come close to the rail.

-- Solution, Don't want to bend the steel tube just in case the 230 doesn't sell. So, Going to the hardware store tomorrow and will buy new brass tube the same size and put a little flare on it to work.

Might not even attach the rear mount due to having the Iso-pad for the third point of contact. Then again, depends how it goes.

Was fun so far.

RC230 in the background.... $210 obo:)

Steve, you aint lying brother. Had minor surgery yesterday and can barely sit in my chair, but once there, I'm good as long as the boat and tools are nearby.

Here's what I just finished up. Looks like the same as the rest, but its not. This one is nearing perfection. She'll cut ya' too!

275 SS

Also working on a new 280. My goal is to have a 270, 275 & 280 just for the wall. Not to ever be mounted.

Take a closer look at that second photo and you'll see the aircooled rc230 sitting on the starter ~ ~ ~.

Front & center (same photo) is the 260 with the mount going on. Please tell me you're joking.:D

LN, you've got both my email accounts. What did I miss? Damn, thought I've replied to all of them. YGM in a few mikes.

The rc230 (aircooled) is a fabulous engine. You should notice the boat is open also. Yes, it gets hot like anything else but there's no trouble with it as long as its maintaining airflow. The engine also has a huge fan for a flywheel and it works.

You ever want to make a bad-a** weedeater, strap one of these on there. 2.8 hp !

Can see you holding the camera from the reflection on the blade. LOL ;)
I gotta do mine like that. Can u give me a list of tools and supplies to do it?

Box stock prop

150 & 320 grit rolled sanding cloth

1200 wet sand paper cut into small 3x3 in. squares

Small files

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sand the prop with the 150 all over and you'll start noticing the imperfections in it. Try to work some of those out. Don't press too hard on the prop because it'll gouge. The SS props especially have hundreds of tiny holes that I like to make disappear. Takes time

File the mold lines off on the hub

Use the round file to get in the tight areas where the blade meets the hub

Pinch the cloth to make it hard and get in those tight areas to take out the file marks

Keep fresh grit on the metal. It loads up easily

Once done, hit it with the 320. This will load up easily so keep rolling the cloth over to the fresh grit.

After you're done with the 320, take a 4 inch piece thats real smooth and go ove the whole prop. Take your time. You'll see a lot of the small scratches coming out because the cloth is so fine by now its acting as a polish

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Balance & Sharpen

Take your small flat file and start working the leading edges. Get it sharp. Be easy on it not to gouge the metal and feather it back into the blade area.

Do not file the nut side of the blade

Check your balance after you've done one side ........ naturally its going to be off balance but its still good to know the thing works.

Do the other side with the file

Check balance

Should be pretty close by now.

Take the 320 cloth and go back over the filed area, taking out the cut marks from the file

Be careful not to slice your fingers

Old cloth and polish it out

Check balance after done both sides :)

If you have to, go back and file a little off this side or that side, but keep it almost perfect balance in this stage. Polish it back out with the cloth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wet sand

Tri fold the square of 1200

Turn the sink on a couple drips every few seconds

Take a dab of dishwashing liquid on the paper after getting it wet.

Sand

Do the whole prop that way. Usually one piece will last me for one side.

Keep the dishwashing liquid on the paper. This will help polish.

Once the paper loads up, the prop will be almost black. Put a drop or two of water on it to wash the excess away and aid in polishing.

After you're done, it will have a good shine that you can leave like that or go to the next step.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Final balance ~~~~ File on the trailing edge of the blade. (The straight edge portion). If you got it very close the first time, you shouldn't have to touch it much with the file.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I take the Eagle One aluminum polish and work the whole prop for about an hour.

Old sock or something and go to work. The shine will really be deep and you can see the results when comparing one blade to the next.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

or on that stage, you can take the Dremel with a buffing wheel and polish. It just doesn't seem to be as deep of a shine as what I like compared to the hand polish.

You can see my little tub in the photo. The last few nights the wife and I have watched a few movies. She's got her thing going and I'm in the easy chair working a prop and listening to the movie.:)

Worked a little more today

I don't like the WHH clutch with this mount. Its too long. The idea behind that clutch design is that it has a Zerk fitting that fills the cone up with grease. The rotation along with the way the flex shaft is wound allows it to pull grease down the drive line so you don't have to pull and do it manually.

Having gave a lecture in clutches, its not a hard project, just going to take time and do it right.

You can see where the space was from the mount and the bottom needed to be shimmed & longer screws used v/s the stock.

Doubledog
11-22-2003, 08:26 AM
Look just to the left of the grey coil and you'll see the shim job on the bottom two screws

Doubledog
11-22-2003, 08:32 AM
Picked up some larger brass tube yesterday and have it bent & cut, but when you lower the engine down for the rail screws, then the clutch housing touches the hull.

In this photo you can see the stock steel stuffing tube inserted in the clutch. *Notice how high the engine sits? This is because of the RC230 being aircooled and allowing for the fan.

Its causing me to do some thinking on this thing.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing leave it high like that and add a few pieces to the mounts. Wish it could sit as low as possible to help with the CG.

Another idea is to measure the length of the clutch and compare to someone else's like Bonzi Sports. Thiers seems to be really short.

Not the same backing plate as mine. Mine is just an aluminum plate, not a bell housing like yours. Plate would save you some hight and distance from transom.

Doubledog
11-22-2003, 03:06 PM
Yes, its WHH.

What do you mean "not the same backing plate" ? Do you have any photo's or a link to it? I thought they all are the same & I've owned three of them.

Talk brother.

Here's yours

I definitly see the difference. Damn, & just ordered two of them last week. I hope they're this style.

Doubledog
11-23-2003, 05:19 AM
You know after looking at the two, they look to be the same length. But you'll notice mine has the 'bell' shape to it. I remember the first few times you ran, you mentioned about having clutch dust in the hull. Mine has over 10 tanks on it and the only dust I've seen was when I took it off.

Then again, you had trouble with yours too. We'll see.

When did U aquire that clutch you have from WHH?
Do you have a pic of the shoe setup? Is it like my new one or the one I had problems with?

Doubledog
11-25-2003, 02:29 PM
The hatch will be built out of a scanner lid. Its got kind of a slight roll to the top. I'll order a couple of air scoops from MHZ and epoxy them into place. Should look pretty cool.

Just got to find the time to finish up the engine swap first.

When it gets done, might have to come up with a new name for it besides SuperG.

Looked at your shoe setup and its the same. There's a guy on ebay selling the clutch shoe & bell case that mounts to the engine for $10 + shipping. I started to buy a set or two but passed because this one looks to be real good and there wasn't much dust in the case.

Doubledog
11-27-2003, 03:23 AM
Here's the one I ordered for a buddy. Looks just like your's but different from the one I've got on the rc230.

I've got two more on the way from the states for the two 260's. Guessing is that they should look like this one.

Just can't help but wonder why the one from the 230 has a different endbell.

29 Dec 2003

Dear Model Boat Diary,
Today was the first time I've got to work on the engine swap in a long time. <sigh> .... I've been real busy lately getting things ready for the holidays and spending time with the family. Its been a real pleasure, but I've neglected my boats. Here I am with two new ones and in the middle of an engine swap on another.

A month ago, I got to work with the new 260 and the mounts from SpeedWorld. Well, come to find out, they're not really worth a hill with this setup. So, we've came up with our own plan and made some ourselves. Got new goodies in and we're rolling. The wife went shopping all day (after Christmas sales:rolleyes: ) so I had the whole day to give the boats lots of love. Really diary, I went to the basement at 10am and didn't come out till 7 pm to eat and shower and now write to you.:p

ALRIGHT GUYS enough of the smack!

Here's what I've got after putting this off for so long.

One NEW, never seen gas 260 thats getting disassembled so that it could be drilled for a pressure port to run the pump

Doubledog
12-29-2003, 03:27 PM
If you look to the 10 o'clock position in the cylinder, you'll see the hole that was drilled and the brass nipple on the other side. Was a little nervous about it till I took it apart.

After drilling, it got a hot water wash down and sprayed with wd40 then reassembled and tested. Works good.

Looks different than before with the homemade mount.

Not exactly purple anodized but effective none the less.

Doubledog
12-29-2003, 03:41 PM
Installation looks a lot cleaner. (ignore the water line across the plug wire). Also have a nipple for the water dump instead of having the line come out the strut.

Was hoping to run tomorrow but my throttle cable is too short. It came off the RC230. Just when you thought you was all done and ready to call it a day:( We'll see what we can dig up tomorrow and maybe run before the end of the week. Weather looks permitting... no snow but the rest of the week isn't too promising.

Oh well. At least it'll give me time to get it ready for paint.

BTW, got a new cowl on order so it'll spice this thing up a little. Just wish there was some way to get rid of that ugly exhaust. After we see the performance of the new engine, might just get rid of it all together and make our own even if it's going to drop performance. Looks do mean something.

bufferoo
12-29-2003, 03:55 PM
DD..that's what I like to see! Almost done and itching to get out on the water.

For the exhaust, mind if I suggest something? Since you mentioned about a drop in performance not being such a bad thing, perhaps you could turn the manifold around to the front and have it bend back to catch the pipe. That should buy you a few inches at the least and you "might" just be able to tuck it into the hull all the way. If you've got anyone near you that can do a custom bend I think you might just be in business.

I've even see the manifold coild up coming off the exhaust port and ending 3" in front of the engine but still the same over all length.

If you know what lenght works for your setup then it shouldn't be too much to work it to the front.

<Light comes on>

You know, you're absolutly right!

After reading your post, I pulled this photo off. #3 looks like a winner doesn't it? As long as there's room;)

I'll need to do some measuring and see whats going on.

THATS WHY I LOVE YOU GUYS!

Bufferoo,

Got two wrap pipes on order. A bud helped me out from another site.

THANKS FOR THE IDEA!

Update:

The new header pipes came in today !

Put on the engine with the exhaust cannister attached and THE WHOLE THING FITS INSIDE THE BOAT !

YIPPIE!

Thanks for the idea again Bufferoo.

Also have a new hatch on the way from RonBuck on ebay. He's laying it up from scratch just for the layout I gave him!

Dang, talk about a week.

Engine - - -
This mug does not like me one bit so its getting sent to a buddy to see if he can get it running. By the time he does, I'll be on vacation somewhere's in the Balkans for a month:( (could be worse)

ROCK ON!

Can we have a picture of the pipe inside the boat DD?

Doubledog
05-02-2004, 01:11 AM
No excuse other than been very busy the last four months and have ran the boat only once since installing the new engine. But yes, Its no trouble to hook up and see how it looks.... just needs a hole through the transome and I'm a little leery about drilling just yet. Also, was planning on using it with a cowl on the top to fully enclose everything, but time has been a real issue.

Also my Bud's have thought that the wrap pipe might put it too close to the side of the hull allowing the heat to cause damage. We'll see.
