Just picked one up today for running inside on snowy days. Quite a nice kit for $50. I was reluctant to get a MiniZ because of the price tag. I was seiously considering the Losi MiniT. Read about the XMod in RC CarAction and decided to drop by and get one. (Still might want that Mini T though)

thank you thank you thank you StevePond!

I got the yellow Skyline. So far mods include: light set (must have very cool) battery/charger set, and blue anodized wheel nuts off of my old Mini-Z.

I plan to get the stage 1 and 2 motors, 4WD upgrade kit, and the body kits.

Anyone have the stage 2 motors ? If so is it a big diference?

Macdaddy4738

i have them.

i dont have the stage ones though so i cant tell you if its any different.

filipinoguy
12-15-2003, 04:09 AM
I mean the stock motor vs. stage 2

Macdaddy4738
12-15-2003, 08:22 AM
its a big difference....

i ran the stock motor for about...5 seconds..it was to slow and i took it out.

With the top speed motor (the blue one) it takes some room to get up to full speed...mine never did make it that high so i took that motor out.

a downside is that the motors are a pain to take out.

hey i found a cool mod for your X-Mod here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3164908059&category=2565) it just looks cool

Me and a bunch of other guys at work got them to race around at lunch and after work. These things are really fun. I have a Mini-Z that I really like but could not get others as "into it" as I was because of the price. Xmods are much less expensive and easy to afford. Not to mention the hop ups are very reasonable. The cool part is they are just plain fun. The lower cost lets you not worry too much about them. And availability is awesome. I highly reccomend getting one.

Got $100 dollors early for X-mas (minus the taco salad from Taco Bell). And I found the X-mods in the Feb issue of R/C Car Action. I'm really thinking about getting one. For that price and on what you get, fully propitional radio & car, is quite affordably. A few questions on them before I get myself worked up over nothing
1. Is the radio (steering & throttle) truely propitional?
2. How long do they last on one charge from Alkaline or Ni-Metal batteries?
3. How well do they turn and handle?

geo8498
12-21-2003, 06:50 PM
Personally, my XMod is now handling a little funny. I think I may have done something to the differential. But that just started happening. The steering is proportional, about as good as one can expect from a mini modular unit. I haven't driven a MiniZ so I can't compare, but I think they would be about the same in the handling just by looking at the components.

I definitely want to get the 4 wheel drive and suspension upgarde to improve handling. Mine spins too easily on the hardwood floor. It's also so low to the ground that it hooks up on just about any piece of debris. Hopefully the above mentioned hopups will address that. I did get the foam tires which help with traction. i actually put the foam tires on the bigger stock wheels to lift it off the floor a bit more.

definitely get rechargable batteries. Regular AAAs lasted me one night of maybe an hour worth of drive time. I bought Energizer 750Mah NIMHs at the hardware store for $7 a pair. I already had a charger, so I decided against the Radio Shack batteries, although they seemed like a good price, and I believe they are also 750Mah. I put a fifth battery in mine as well, since the NIMHs are only 1.2V instead of 1.5V like regular alkalines. The fifth cell just sits atop the motor mount. I haven't really tested the charge time on them, but I'd say they last about the same as the alkalines.

If you want to run on carpert and have $150 to spend, I'd consider a Mini T, or Kyosho Mini Monster. But for the cost of the XMod, even with the cost of a few of the perfomance upgrades, it's a pretty good deal.

geo8498
12-21-2003, 07:02 PM
Oh yeah, the throttle is very good, even has a high-low setting. Steering has a nice rate adjust dial on the side. And the steering has trim buttons as well, though I always have to readjust mine, and I think it should be a dial instead of buttons. The steering ttrim buttons are not very responsive.

One neat thing I just discovered is that the Tx powers off when it is folded.

The reverse also requires you to hit the trigger twice. By that I mean, first reverse trigger activates break, second hit activates reverse. Took me a little while to figure that one out. But it is very responsive and fully proportional in both directions.

geo8498
12-21-2003, 07:25 PM
showing the five cell setup. I have the battery hard wired into place and inside a clear plastic tube which is glued to the motor mount. Couldn't figure out a way to fabricate a mount that would let me remove the battery without adding alot of weight. Recharging is done by means of 2 wires going to the rear of the chassis.

geo8498
12-21-2003, 07:30 PM
Note the red and black charging wires extending to the rear of the chassis and out the bottom holes.

Runtimes sound pretty good, I'll only be driving for maybe 45min at a time. From what you have told me, the X-mods is a descent car to buy. I already have plans in the future for this car, so if something goes out, I have an excess to rip it into overdrive. The other mini's that I'm currenttly looking at are the Kyosho Mini Z's. Still deciding, if I do buy, it will be after X-mas or New Year's.

Things I'll buy for the X-Mod if I do buy it from Radio Shack.
1. 4wd unit
2. Stage 2 motors
3. light set
4. Ball bearings

Thanks for the pixs of yours, helps me decide. Right now, I'm a loaded pistol waiting to be shot off, just don't know which way to aim first.

Hey guys. Today I just got the Stage 2 motor upgrade and 4WD kit! The stage 2 motors and the 4WD made a huge difference, it hooks up much better on my hardwood floor, and feels much easier to drive. I don't think I'm ever switching back to RWD.

So far I have:
radioshack battery/charger set
light set
mini-z wheel nuts
stage 2 motors
4WD upgrade

Up next:
body kits
supension kit

In response to one of the above posts- the steering is not actually fully proportional. It actually works in steps. I've read posts about it being between 8-16 steps each way, but never actually bothered counting my own. I will tell you that it works pretty good whatever it is.
Anyway I just wanted to tell people that the Xmods are a great car for having fun with. I own a Mini-Z and can tell you that despite the similar size these cars are quite different. I really dont think its fair to compare the two. The Mini-Z is much more expensive. And I believe better in overall quality and aftermarket parts availability. So far I've probably spent upwords of $400 or so on mine. However, because of the initial cost of about $130 for one it was hard for me to get others involved with them. The cost was more than non-RC people where willing to spend. By non RC people I mean those people that dont understand the difference between a hobby grade car and an Toys R Us RC car. My definition of hobby grade is something that is made to compete with similar cars and replacement parts and hop ups are redily available. The Xmods fits into this category. But at a lot lower cost.
I will say that I have had more fun with my Xmod in the two weeks I've had it than I ever did with my Mini-Z. Thats not the Mini-Z's fault, just a lack of interest per dollar from others. With the Xmods you can buy it for $50 (unless your EvaderRacer76) and add some cool stuff like a body kit for $15 and some lights for $6, maybe a faster motor for $12-15 and all wheel drive for $16. These things are made for fun at a reasonable price. I would highly suggest getting one if you can get a couple people to race with. Racing them around is a blast. Wrenching on them is fun too.

I've been doing alot of research over night. There is a 16 step steering in ether direction, still don't know about the throttle (assuming the same). I've read the manual from Radio Shack Online and found the steering trims reset themselves after you turn off the TX. Is that true and is there even one it to begin with?

I've been a R/C hobbist since the age of 4. First car of mine came from Radio Shack, then at the age of 6. Found the true world of R/C with propotional steering and throttle, never went back to those wanna be R/C's. But now I'm looking back at Radio Shack (My favorite store because of all the gimsoses :D). I own and race a TC3, T3, and a HPI NMT. I'm a bit of both off-road and on-raod, thats whats causing me an hard trying to decide.

Sad maybe, but impressive with its speed and agility. And even its not an on-road car but a rally car with the conversion kit on it.

im looking at these things just as a way to drag my college buddies into it, i have one and a half TC3's right now (carpet and asphalt), a T3, and i have an Xray M18 in my moms closet for christmas, but i dont know that:D . i am, however, looking at these just because i could get a few of them, and hold races in the dorm lobby and charge like a dollar race fee, and then like a 2 dollar car rental fee, it would be pretty sweet! then i could drag everyone into it with all the body kits, and then next thing you know everyone is hooked! if anyone knows where i can get these for less than cost, being a poor college student, or where i could buy bulk, like 3 or so w/ a crystal set for a slightly reduced cost, let me know!
thanks,

Great idea!!!! you would make some money pretty quick. You could do like the mini z cup does. X-mods stock and X-mods open.
Maybe, you can sell parts at the races. You would make a little bit more money that way. You could use these as corner pylons
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=9059&FVPROFIL=++&search3=Go
What are you going to use as walls? You could also make grapics for them. Just get that paper that is like blank decal sheet, and print away.

i was probably going to use a couch or coffee table as a drivers stand, and use the existing walls with PVC at the base for the outside walls, and probably some larger PVC for the inside walls, track will obviously not be much larger than 15x10, and yeah, im thinking that carrying parts is a good idea... anyways, if yall have any more suggestions, let me know! thanks,

Who ever was asking for a difference in the stage 2 motors compared to the stage 1....there is a major difference i found now. A while ago i installed the yellow stage 2 Drift motor. Its alot faster and the weird thing is it actually wants to drift. Really cool!

If your Xmod is slow, then you did something wrong. Mine goes like a bat out of hell..But, of course, more batteries = more speed. Check around Ebay. There are 5, 6 and even 8 cell conversions for the Xmod.

I work at a Radio Shack in Southern Californa (K400), and as such, I have pretty much unlimited access to XMODS..Heh. I've already got a fully moded out Skyline, (Everything. Stage 2 motor, bearings, 4wd, tires, every mod available from RadioShack, and then some) and I'm in the middle of doing a FWD RSX. Should prove interesting. Traction's going to be an issue, but a couple ounces of lead up front should fix that.

Since you work at radio shack can you tell me if i can order the replacement bodies through the store or do i have to call 1-800-theshac? I took the numbers i had and the guy at radioshack told me he "doesnt know how"

Sebring
01-09-2004, 10:36 PM
Then he was a lazy mofo. Ask someone higher up. You should be able to get replacement bodies with no trouble. I work for a franchise Shack, not a corporate, and we can still get the replacement parts and upgrades. This soon after Christmas, thou, the Corproate stores may have priority. Ebay's got them, too. You could get them off of there faster then you could from Radio Shack. It takes us at least a week to get stuff we order.

Lol..I finished the front-wheel drive RSX. It's great! Who ever would have thought the Xmod's mid-motor config would make such a wonderful FWD car? Holy crap. It's great. If you have the AWD kit, all you have to do is remove the rear diff and axle.

The car pulls hard (A little too hard, actually), and has a tendancy to turn to the left. The car's mostly still stock, so stiffer springs would probably fix that. I got it as an experiment since I had an extra AWD kit. Some guy returned it complaining about range problems, and the boss sold it to me at cost (Like 30 bucks), and it's great. I did have to salvage the front CVDs off of my Skyline for the time being, because, being a dumbarse, I took apart the front universals.

Now all I have to do is fit a CRX body to it, and I'll be set. :D If you've got an extra Xmod sitting around, or want to do something new and different with yours, and you're into the Import scene, definately get the Civic or RSX body and go front-wheel drive!

Definatly just picked myself up a White Supra. All the skylines were sold out...sad face. Supras are cool though. Also go the tire upgrade and the stage 2 motors. The stage 2 motors make a big difference. The stock motor is actually a stage one motor and if you're going to buy the stage 2 motors there's no sense in buying the stage 1 motors (they're only $2 cheaper anyway).
I plan on getting 2Li batteries to supply the power. Each Li batt is lighter barely heavier than your standard AAA batt and even with less MAh they supply more power and last much longer. I'm also going to get the bearing upgrade so I can get the CF drive shaft that's been floating around on ebay for a bit now.
These cars are quite fun. I'm hoping to get a few other colleges buddies into it. I got two interested now but neither of them have money :( . Gotta love the college life

guys could you tell me how to add an extra cell to my car.

geo8498
01-20-2004, 10:10 PM
There's a picture of my 5th cell on page one. To do it this way, you'll need to solder the wire from neg on one battery box to pos on new cell, then solder the pos on other battery box to neg on new cell. I then soldered charge lead wiresfrom the battery box to go to the rear of the car since the new cell is hard wired in. This way I can just clip my peak charger to the rea of the car without removing batteries.

My sis and I were playing with our x-mods today and she jumped it off a little piece of cardboard and upon impact, broke the rear cvd. The guy at radioshack said they dont sell replacement parts and it will cost 30 dollars to fix that little part. Is there anything I can do?

NewToNitro
01-22-2004, 07:36 PM

MikeWz

and if you can't find the part, just buy another car for the extra $20. Then if you break anything else you can use the broken car for replacement parts.

I'm havin a problem if any one can help...

My diff is slipping on the axle enabling it to move away from the bevel gear, which then slips every now and then. The overall problem with that, my car could drown out a lawn mower, yes it's that loud, secound i get crappy acceleration because it slipps all the time. My little bro.s' doesn't, his is wicked quiet, never slips and the diff is more locked on, where as mine slips away from the bevel gear. Please anyone tell me how to fix it, it's driving me insane... The only thing I can think of is to put in a spacer, but that adds alot of friction, and of course, deals a big hit to speed, can't have that.

bugman72
01-30-2004, 04:56 PM
If any of you want some serious torque + top speed, you need to slip in a Crest Spinbrush motor and use the Stage 2 Blue pinion/bevel gear set. I'm running a 5-cell setup with the Spinbrush and I can get generous wheelspin on takeoff with 4wd both on carpet and on linoleum.

Instructions on how to convert a Spinbrush over can be found here (http://www.xmodworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1339) . There's instructions on building a hybrid motor using the Spinbrush magnets, which are much stronger. I've built a Stage 2 Drift (white) hybrid motor and the wheelspin is amazing. Much more torque and I wouldn't be able to control it...even with 4wd.

bugman72
02-02-2004, 08:44 AM
It's indeed not better than the RS4 Micro motor. You're comparing a 180 motor to a 130 motor. But, for the $5 that it costs for the Spinbrush and the ease of installation, it's a big "bang for the buck".

I might get one to practice taking winds off. I hear some of the modded 130s are quick.

bugman72
02-02-2004, 12:56 PM
That's what I've heard, also. The only problem with taking winds off of a motor in reference to the Xmods is that you can't take too many winds off or you run the risk of frying the FETs. I can't remember the exact number of turns that is still safe for the FETs, but as long as you don't take off too many, you should be good to go.

I'm simply tired of my Xmod radios burning out at the slightest touch. My third car and no more spares to salvage from. I should've gone ahead and spent the $150 on a Mini-T.

yea for some reason my car doesnt have range at all. i have checked the antenna wires and everything. i have done the FWD conversion and a 5 cell conversion. it only worked for about 3 minuets and for those three minuets i never got and traction. but it was fun. for all the money that i have put in the xmond i could have gotten a mini T but its all good.

For what I paid it was well worth it. It was $50 for the car and $10 for the track. It doesn't really need any hop ups for bashing around, I needed the steering upgrade to make it steer tight enough for my track.

1. Range of the radio is good. I would say mine is atleast 100'. I did fry the ESC when soldering my antenna back on and it lost all of its range. I was able to buy a used one at RS for $4. Your local RS may also part our their returns.

2. The JR XS3 is an FM radio and it will not work with the Xmods that are AM. I'm not sure about any other transmitters that work.

3. Battery charging should be at the lowest setting that your charger has, which is probably .5 amps.

yea i dont know why i said my xs3.. i was givin an example. maybe if i put the receiver in the car with it.. heh... no... but yes, i understand the limits of frequencies and bandwidths

i tried it out on the road, and my range stock (cept i relocated the antenna mount to the front of the car) was around 120-140', with minor cut outs.

"i pulled the crystal straight out the rs controller and put it in my old traxxas controller, and it doesnt work. turns out the rs crystals arent quite on 27mhz. theyre in like 26 or somethin. anywho, mine didnt work, good luck to you all"

anywho, i got the ic3 charger, so its all good now. my advice is get the 15 min ic3 charger that does four AA or AAA batts at a time. $27 for the charger w/ two AA and two AA and $12 for four AAA 15 min batts with it at wal-mart.

If you know how to solder it is pretty straight forward. The most difficult part is working with the tiny wires. The guy I bought them from has really good directions on his website.

They may be grinding because there is dirt stuck in them. You can take them out and clean them. Do not put grease on them because that will attract the dirt.

02-11-2005, 08:56 AM
well, with miniZ's you can just make a longer H plate to accomadate the longer wheelbase of the 1/24 model body.... you cant exactly do that with an Xmod. I was comparing wheelbases between xmod at middle setting vs Z at longest...they are about 2mm difference, the Z being that much longer there. xmod at longest should pretty much be equal to Z at longest. which means there's probably NO way you can get 1/24 bodies onto Xmods, UNLESS you find a 1/24 with that short of a wheelbase.
ie...I mounted a vw GTi 92 model onto my Z...you'd think it would have a short wheelbase, but I had to extend the Hplate by 5mm or so.

Not of that one. At the time that I did it everyone was trying to chop up bodies from models to make them fit. I had a different approach that worked and didn't really want to show how I did it. I just picked up a Civic XMods yesterday. All I did was the stage 2 motor upgrade, that thing is pretty damn fast with just 4 cells in it. I plan to do the awd mod and a 5th cell. For as inexpensive as they are, I am impressed. Its perfect for driving around in my basement. My TC4 is bit too fast for that. I think with the awd mod, it will be pretty fun, right now the suspension is too soft so when you turn hard the inside tire gets light and it just spins slowing the car way down.

You don't need fets for the lithiums. Fets have more to do with how much the motor draws as opposed to how much the batteries put out.

Opinions are like *******s. Everyone's got one, and most of them stink.

I've had cheapie RC's from the time I was a kid...By cheapie I mean those available at retail outlets. My first one was a buggy style and it was red. I was really little but I think it said "Lobo" on it. The next memorable one was a monster truck I got from radioshack for Christmas one year. It was called "Wild Horse".

However, the XMods are what persuaded me to buy a REAL R/C. Those little things are infinately upgradeable, and alot of fun on lunch breaks with some friends. They're also inexpensive, which is nice.

In fact the more fets you have, lower temperature you get. If you want to be friendly with your fets, then you can add a power capacitor so it will run cooler, smoother and punchier. And also your autonomie will decrease. Heatsink will not be possible to mount in place, it will only increase your car center of gravity. :D

I got my first Xmod today for my birthday. There is a problem, though. The steering only works like half the time!! :( The batteries are just out of the package, and I assembled it according to the instructions. I wondered if any of you have had the same problems, and know how to fix it.

i've broken one of the rear knuckles on my EVO gen xmods. they evidently are a weak-point on these and the only place i've found replacements are atomicmods.com, where they are 4.95 and 8.95 for shipping...

i can't handle that..especially since the part weight .61 grams and other parts similar in radio shack unlimited list i've seen are 1.19 each...

supposedly radio shack is doing something about this parts propensity to break, but i am not sure....

i have not seen a part number for this part for use w/ radio shack unlimited catalog, just for other parts for the EVO chassis.

i do not see any alloy options available for this either, only stuff for GEN1

If your thinking about buyimg an x-mod and reading this,I STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMEND THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! its a toy!!! get a mini-t or rc18t instead!

PS-not trying to start an e-arguement, this is just my opinion!!

years ago i was sponsored for 1/10 electric buggy and 1/12 scale carpets...i don't have the time for that type of deal anymore plus we have no local tracks...

so, i decided to get into xmods. I was sorta aprehensive about them since i thought they were toys like you mention, but the i found out how extensive the mods can be and i also realized the extent to which these lil things can perform!

So i got one (evo chassis LANCER) and for sh*ts and giggles i called the local hobby shop to see if they carried stuff for them-

they were SUPER indignant and said 'those are toys. anything that is made by radio shack we would not carry parts for...'

now, i understand to an extent, but these xmods seem to be on a higher level than the RS pieces we are used to and have seen thru the years...for the price it's a great thing to kick around with...spend a little more money on it and christ, a 6" car going 20-40mph, that is a heck of a toy lol.

Yeah xmods get a lot of crap cause there "toys". But for the price of one mini-z you can get a decked-out xmod that will smoke a mini-z. The people at you LHS probably just wanted you to get a mini-z. I have almost more fun with my xmod then my nitro mt. I only have a gen. 2 xmod, and hopefully gettting a evo for christmas. The evos are actually supposed to be actually close in comparision to a mini-z. Later.

I agree, I just bought one two days ago and put the stage two motor in it and all I can say is, is wow! I am shocked at how fast the Evo's really are. I bought the Infinity G35 and it looks killer, so yes they are from Radio Shack and yes some people call them toys and not hobby grade but I am here to tell you they are just as complex and fast as any RC car out there for its size. Plus the hop-ups are unlimited, I have found web sites with cars that have all alluminium and carbon parts that run over 50mph. People say they are not hobby grade??%%??

well, it's certain things, like the radio/ range, the actual resilience of the parts, the exactness of the fit for instance the wheel slop, etc...

the xmods are pretty neat, but there are some faults that are definately not present in the Mini-z. I took back all my Xmods stuff after breaking one of the infamously weak knuckles and got a Mr-o2 MM mini-z Enzo. The range is incredible, the handling is also NUTS and the quality is that of a bigger scale competitive racer by Kyosho. if you drove a mini-z you would know what i mean....but xmods can be fun, no doubt.

If anyone gets an EVO generation XMODS, it is a known fact that the knuckles are usually cracked from the factory in one or all of the holes on the knuckle. I know this for a fact. i broke mine in 2 days w/o hitting a thing, turns out that the cracks i saw when i was putting it together were NOT supposed to be there lol. So i took the car back in an effort ot get knuckles from another Evo kit and they were broken out of the box also! Radio shack supposedly has these knuckles available in a beefed up improved version avail. thru the 800 number, but i would recommend spending the money and getting alloy ones from GPM. it's worth the investment because if they were not cracked from the factory, they will break at the drop of a hat.

the fet upgrade is necessary for motors that are too wild for the stock electronics...the batter power you choose is fine with stock fets, it's just that a fet upgrade will sorta harness the power of the LiPo better than the stock fets.

short story, you will be ok

Most xmods have the same problem. go to atomicmods.com and look up the steering fix. works wonders. and if you dont feel like doing that right yet, theres the steering trim buttons. later.

Radio Shack has sales (one going on now) that have a $20 rebate. That makes the new Evo and Gen1 cars either $20 or $30 depending on the model.

I bought a G35 for basically $19.97 plus tax.

For $20 bucks I'd say it's more then worth it. :)

I got the Mustang for Xmas and I love it. I just picked up the body kit and light set too. Does any one know a way to get it to hook up better on semi-dusty floors? The stock tires just don't cut it but the local Radioshack doesn't have any upgrade tires in stock. I love sliding the car around trying to control the drifts and doing donuts across the floor but to actually be able to race against other guys with fairly stock rides would be cool too. Thanks.

1st thing you do to the xmod is trash the stock motor and drop a stage 2 in it..then add 2 extra cells..then do the whole light thing..and maybe figure out where to get lipos from

ChuckDeez
04-11-2007, 03:30 PM
The first thing I would do on a gen 1 is put ball bearings. After that i would add resistors onto the servo wires to make it turn better. Then practice, practice, practice until you cannot beat your time, you upgrade the motor. I beat my cousin and he has 2 lithium ion batteries, awd, stage 2 motor and ball bearings. I beat him with stage 2 motor, 4 AAA batteries, ball bearings, heatsink, and steering mod. His car is way too fast and he doesn't even have the steering mod put on. He turns really wide with his gen 1.

oh my god..

i put 3 AAA batteries, and connect 7 cell intellect battery pack to one slot...

Okay electronics/ pcb pros... i need your help. first of all this is clearly NOT an XMOD board but I am trying to learn before i do work on my XMOD. It is just a practice car from Walmart with no speed control (no proportional anyway).
This board takes 3 cells (4.5v). I wired up 5 cells (7.5v) and it ran with no problems. I then hooked up a 7.4 Lipo to this board and it worked for a bit... then forward blew. Then reverse blew. Then the steering blew. (I should mention that while installing the lipo I soldered the positive and negative battery connectors directly to the board without using the on/off switch- I did have the on/off switch with the 5 cell setup). The MOTORS ARE FINE (I checked the drive and servo motor and they are not damaged).
so here's the Qs:
1) This board doesn't appear to have FET chip/s. Is it true that if you run to many volts through an XMOD or too hot of a motor with a lot of amp draw it is the FETS that blow?
2) If this board does not have FETs, what blew on the board that stopped it from working? How do I find out?
3) Does anybody know (or have the time and patience) to explain what the doodads on the board are and do (especially the plethora of black things that stick up), or direct me to a site that explains it?
Here are the post-blow pics:
